IDVD to make 'normal' video DVD's

A simple question, but I have not seen a definitive answer.
On a new iMac with a Superdrive, can I use iMovie 5 and iDVD 5 to
burn a video DVD that will play on a normal (noncomputer)
DVD player? I know that I can create my movie in iMovie,
it is the burning part I am concerned about before I spring
for a new Mac. Thanks!

Yes, that is precisely what the applications are designed for.

  • Can I use iDVD to make a HD DVD?

<<I read that "Mac Superdrives with HD burning ability do not exist. All your
HD editing ends up squished down to standard DV specs using iDVD.">>
So...when I use an HD camcorder, shoot in HD, edit the HD clips in 16:9 format,
using iMovie HD (for FCP, for that matter) if I output them to iDVD or DVD Pro,
they are then re-compressed in some sort of SD format, is that correct?
    Hal

You are correct a standard DVD burned via a Mac Superdrive cannot contain HD content.
This is simply because it is not an HD DVD, there is not the capacity on the disc to store the data required.
You can of course edit in HD in iMovie and then watch the output on an Apple TV / HD TV in HD.
Until there are HD DVD or Blue-Ray burners in Macs and an iDVD upgrade that can output the same formats you will not be able to make a HD DVD.

  • Using iDVD to make avideo on DVD

I am having trouble producing a DVD of an FCE video, using my present software: FCE 3.0; QT Pro; and Toast 7. (In case its relevant, transitons and fades to black cause the format to change momentarily from 16:9 to 4:3 and back. I cannot cure this.) DVD Studio Pro is now sold only as part of the big package at huge cost, so I want to try iDVD but need advice on whether it will definately do what I want, which is:
    1. My camera is a Sony DCR-HC96 (current model). It's True Widescreen: that is, its CCD is physically 16:9
    2. Produce a video (including transitions, fades, effects) in QT format from FCE by choosing FCE > Export > QuickTime Movie
    3. Produce a DVD which will display on a standalone DVD player and TV set as either letterboxed (on a 4:3 TV) or as true 16:9 (on a widescreen 16:9 TV) with no reversion to 4:3 when the transitions or fades or effects appear
    Two questions please:
    A) Will iDVD definately do this successfully?
    B) What Easy Setup should I use: DV-PAL or DV-PAL Anamorphic (or another)?
    Thanks
G5/2.0 GHz Mac OS X (10.3.9) 1 GB RAM, 150 GB HD, Sony DCR-HC96 mini DV, FCE HD 3.0

I don't know what you have already tried but when dealing with standard DV this is what you do.
    1. In the timeline select the clips you want or use In/Out markers.
    2. Choose File>Export>QuickTime Movie etc.
However, the best thing to do is try it out on a DVD-RW so that if it doesn't work you have not wasted anything - other than time.
If you want to use a DVD-R then get some on a cakestand that cost less than 30 pence each - I have never had any problems with them.

  • [SOLVED] Rip or play back audio/video DVD

Recently I bought a DVD that contains audio content as well as video content. On the packaging it says that it is in the "DVD Audio/Video" format.
Today I wanted to rip or at least play back this DVD on my computer. When inserting a "normal" video DVD into the disk drive, the DE which I am using (Gnome 3.12) displays a notification that offers the possibility to start playback of the inserted DVD. No such notification was displayed for the DVD in question.
Since anyway my original intention was to rip the DVD to my hard drive, this didn't bother me much and I started looking for a program for ripping DVDs. This research resulted in me installing dvd::rip.
Unfortunately, upon trying to the read the table of contents of the DVD, dvd::rip displays the below error message:
Job 'Determine number of titles' failed with error message:
    Command exits with failure code:
    Command: execflow tcprobe -H 10 -i \/dev\/sr0 && echo EXECFLOW_OK
Output: libdvdread: Could not open /dev/sr0 with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/sr0 for reading
    [[31;1mtcprobe[0m][31;1m critical[0m: unrecognized filetype for '/dev/sr0'
While googling for problems with DVD playback in Arch, I came across some generic solutions that didn't solve the problem, namely adding my user to the audio, video, and optical groups as well as installing packages for handling DVDs (libdvdread, libdvdcss, libdvdnav).
Is there someone who has managed to rip or play back DVDs in the "DVD Audio/Video" format?

Can you mount the disk and see its file system?  If it is a DVD, you should be able to do this, regardless of and CSS.
Is there any chance this a VCD (Video CD)?

  • IDVD Won't Record Video In OneStep DVD

I connected my Sony DV camera to my MacBook Pro using a FireWire cable, I switched the camera to VTR mode, I opened iDVD and clicked on OneStep DVD, I inserted a recordable DVD, it rewinds the tape for me and then says that it's capturing the video, the tape plays for about 3 or 4 seconds and then this message pops up:

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.

I don't know about NTSC but there is a nice PAL solution for SD 16:9 for ordinary DVDs. The 16:9 image becomes 720x576 pixels. So the pixels are each quite wide, and the horizontal resolution is less than the vertical resolution, but at least no pixels are wasted as with letterbox.
A semi-solution is to make a HD-DVD. That format has been abandoned but Apple software pretends otherwise. Apple Compressor does compressions at around 20 Megabits/second data rate specifically for HD-DVD, and Apple DVD Studio Pro makes HD-DVDs. For short projects, less than around 30 minutes, the HD-DVD can be made on a normal DVD. (I did this for a 40 minute project by cutting the bitrate somewhat.) The quality is almost equal to Blu-Ray, but who can play it? People with well equipped Apples can.

  • I produced a film in iMovie and send it to iDVD to make a DVD with a theme. When everything was ready it starts at my mac-computer. But at the TV the theme always comes at the end of the film not at the beginning. What have I to change, what´s wrong?

I produced a film in imovie and send it to idvd to make a dvd with a theme. After finishing all the dvd starts in my mac-computer and first comes the theme and then the film.
But when I start it with a dvd-recorder at tv first the film comes an at the end of the film the theme comes. What did I wrong? Where is my mistake?

    Hi
    A. Do not Use - Share to iDVD - in any iMovie version at all !
    B. Start a BRAND NEW iDVD project
    C. in iMovie'08 to 11 -  Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution as quality will be even worse
    - in iMovie HD6 - just close it and from within iDVD import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it)
    - FinalCut - Export as QuickTime Movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL !
    D. When in iDVD - see to that in the Lay-out menu (when it looks like a box-plott) there ARE NOTHING in the upper left most box (Auto Start box). As this overruns any Menu.
    E. Save as a DiskImage - TEST this first - befor burning any DVDs

No clue why you cannot make video calls over your cellular operator... have you tried contacting them?
If you're referring to FaceTime, it is currently limited to Wi-Fi only.
Sending files via Bluetooth is not a supported feature of the iPhone or iOS.  A simple search of the web or these forums would have made that abundantly clear.
Threatening to throw away valuable items in these forums only serves to make you look less than intelligent.  No one here is an Apple employee, we are all users like yourself.  As such, we could care less what you do.  If you choose to be stupid, that's up to you.

  • How can I put the Video from a bad DVD into iDVD and to a new DVD?

I have a DVD (homemade, no copy protection) and it was created with primitive menu software. Is there a way to take the Video_TS folder and put it onto iDVD 08 and make a new DVD from it? The old DVD no longer plays in my home DVD player and I want to make a decent menu for it etc.

Toast is a better option for you.
But if you really need the fancy menus of iDvd and whatnot, then you'll need to find a way to convert the mpeg 2 files to QuickTime for importing into i-apps. This app may help:

  • IDVD creates a img file, how do I burn this into a video DVD?

  • How do I make the video higher quality?

How do I make dvd's with a higher quality?  I have a Sony AVCHD Camcorder.  I used to use a Macbook Pro and iMovie and iDVD to make DVDs and I could choose to make them a higher quality.  The problem was that it would literally take DAYS to get them done.  I switched to Final Cut, which is quicker, but I can't seem to make the DVDs a higher quality and they are very fuzzy compared to what I used to make.
My husband assures me that the pros in Hollywood use Final Cut Pro to edit video, so it must be possible to make these a better quality.

If you still have a copy of iDVD:
Export from FCP X As a Master File and use the export in iDVD the same way as you did with iMovie.
Bear in mind all DVD discs will only ever be SD Quality and not HD.
Better quality requires a jump to Bluray.
FCP X can burn direct to Bluray if you have the gear.

  • When playing a home video DVD using DVD Player I tried to use the "Controls, Use current frame as jacket picture" facility to create a printable image but with no success. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

When playing a home video DVD (created on my Panasonic DVD/Hard Disc recorder)  using the Mac DVD Player, I tried to use the "Controls, Use current frame as jacket picture" facility to create a printable image but with no success. I assume that any file created by this action would be stored somewhere in a common format but cannot find any such file. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

    Hi Sinious,
Interesting to know about 10.8 and Flash. I'll hold off upgrading until they work together. Currently using 10.6.8 at home and same on the Universtity's computers.
Haven't verified on Windows but shall do later in the week if I can get access to a Windows machine.
Both the Flash player and the Projector come up not full screen, and if I leave it that way then things work OK as long as I don't make the video full screen (using the full screen button on the skin).
However if I make the swf or projector full-screen (by using CMD-F or the menu option) then when I click on the menu item to take me to the page with the video on it, instead of a page with a smallish video and back button I get a black screen with no obvious controls. If I then press Escape I get my normal screen back and I am in the page that should have the video but there is not video and the back button does not work. So something wierd is going on here.
If I make a file without any videos with a similar navigation structure everyting works ok except that when I go full screen I lose the finger cursor when I roll over my buttons (which is also wierd).

  • Can you replicate the video DVD autolaunch and playback on a Flash drive?

I'm creating a motion graphics presentation in Motion and I normally burn these to DVD with DVDSP where it automatically plays when you insert it into a DVD player or computer.
My client wants to distribute the presentation on Flash drives, though, and give those out. My thinking is that a Flash drive is only data and so we would need to distribute the presentation as a QT movie file, which would require the end user run the file.
There's no way to make a computer think a Flash drive is a video DVD, is there?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, the companies you buy those custom USB Flash drives from will put any file you want on them and I'm familiar with the auto run .ini option in Windows. The problem with that is playing a QuickTime movie file on a PC or Mac doesn't look as good at full screen as a video DVD, in my opinion, and the end user would have to manually tell it to go full screen. Finally, not all computers have the auto run feature enabled because of the virus issue you cited, and the end user would have to right-click on the drive and select "Explore" in Windows, or find the file in the Finder, and then manually run it.
Video DVD is great because it looks great at full screen and it's platform agnostic. If you insert one into any computer with a DVD drive, it will either auto play or it will give the user a dialog asking them if they want to play it.
But from a marketing perspective, the USB Flash drive is better because when you give them out to people (with your company's logo on it), people are more likely going to use it and see your presentation versus a DVD disc.
    Thanks!

I can watch my custom created DVD in iDVD 7 preview but once the disc is burnt and I play it back in DVD Player, the screen is black with only the audio playing back. I have tried using three different blank DVD manufactures.

    Hi
Most probably depends on what movie codec You feed iDVD. May be You find any clue here.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
