IDVD "Total menu duration exceeds 15 minute" error! Help!

My menu has no motion.
I do not understand what needs to be done here. How does my menu exceed 15 minutes?
Thanks!

I have tripped over the same problem however when i add up my menu times it comes in under 800 seconds. when i look at the project data file the doom fo fate total menu duration says 1300 seconds. 15 minutes being 900 seconds.
Luckily i am used ot the crappy failure nature of idvd saved multiple backups along the way so i had touchestones to play with. I also hope the **** someone at apple can get their heads out of a dark place long enough to bundle up dvdpro as a separate app. At least they should have saner failure modes on idvd. oh yea my project is 1.4 hours long and has gizmodos over the whole thing making it a very tough long project.
At any rate i edited and re-dited the project data file - deleting one menu loop after another and in final desperation edited the time down to 400 seconds. and still this thing insists that the menus are over 15 minutes.
I then and went to the dvd map and started deleting segments wholesale -- guess what the thing has lost its freaking mind -it still thinks it has a > 15 minute menu with no arms no legs no head and **** near nothing left in the dvd.
YET when i go to one of the saved versions everything looks peachy and i can burn anything i want. SO whatever the problem is its not the idvd plist in the main library or else it would behave the same for every dvd. THere is something pernicious buried deep in the project data file that i am just not going to look for any more - but some one at apple should have a clue.

  • Error- Total menu duration exceeds 15 minutes

I have checked a rechecked this- all my videos in the drop zones do not exceed 15 minutes. I do have audio playing on each menu that does- is this my problem?? I really cant figure out why my disc wont burn- it dose not say anything abut audio being too long. Plus there's plenty of room left. Please help!! I'm trying to finish this for a memorial service. Thanks!

do you know why this is? I would like to keep my audio tracks the way they are if possible. I'm wondering if there might be another solution.
If you have, for example, 3 audio tracks that are each about 5 minutes long, you will probably exceed the limit. That's the way it is. Menus are meant to be short. BTW, if you are creating a 16:9 DVD, you only get about 7 minutes total.

  • Total menu duration exceeds 15 minutes

idvd error.  How do I resolve?

If you've dropped a video into a menu drop zone you may have to crop the length of the video to something shorter, like 60 seconds.  Also if you add music to a menu, the entire length of the track is used to determine menu playing time even though you may have set it to replay after 60 seconds or so. To keep the menu playing time down, copy the audio file you used to about 60 seconds with a 3rd party audio editor like Audacity or Garageband.  Cropping it in iTunes only works for playing in iTunes.

  • When i go to burn a dvd, it gives an error message "menu duration exceeds 15 minutes." how can i fix this??

When I go to burn a dvd, imovie displays an error message, "menu duration exceeds 15 minutes.  How do I fix?

You may have too many chapters (scene selections), or perhaps one or more of the menus are looping for too long. Each menu in its standard form generally runs for no more than 30 seconds before repeating. In any of the menus have you inserted your own music that runs for a much longer duration? If so, using the Inspector, reduce the music time to 30 seconds (there is a slider you can adjust).
Regarding chapters - how many do you have in the project? You may need to delete some markers in your iMovie project. In most of the iDVD themes each scene selection page allows up to 6 scenes. So, for example, if you have 50 scenes marked, the theme would require 9 scene selection pages. I really don't know what the maximum is, but clearly you've run over the 15 minute limit for the iDVD menus. It may be a combination of too many chapters and music looping for too long on one or more of the menus.

  • Total menu duration exceeds 7:30 min

    Hi everyone,
I am attempting to burn a disc image of my iDVD project but keep getting the error message that "Total menu duration exceeds 7:30 min". As far as I can determine, i have I have eliminated all motion in the menus altogether but I keep getting the same message. The project info file indicates 16:46 of 7:30 but I don't know where that 16:46 is coming from.
I have inserted my own image over a past Theme. Could that theme still be operative perhaps and causing the problem in some way?
    Thanks for any help.

Hwenever something weird like that happens, I would try this first:
This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

  • IDVD error - total menu duration exceeds 15 min.  How do I correct this?

Sometimes this error pops up, and asks me if I want to fix it, and it fixes automatically. But most of the time it doesn't give me the option. How do I fix this myself? thanks.

If iDVD won't give you the fix option, then maybe your iDVD preferences have become corrupted. Try closing down iDVD and then trashing the file com.apple.iDVD.plist found in User/Library/Preferences. iDVD will create a new .plist file on relaunch. Then do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac.
If that doesn't solve it, then you will need to eliminate or to manually shorten some of the clips that you put into your motion menus. To shorten the clips, before putting the clip into iDVD shorten it in iMovie and export the shortened clip to your desktop as a Full Quality Quicktime movie. Then drag the shortened quicktime movie into your iDVD motion menu.

  • Error: Total menu duration exceeds 7:30 minutes

I was set to burn my DVD when told of errors in my project. I was directed to the DVD map where at the root menu the error was as described in the subject above.
    Help wanted to solve please.

    Hi all,
    Thanks for the warm welcome!
I guess my problem hasn't been solved, but I kinda understand it now. It would seem iDVD places a limit on the amount of video AND audio content you put in your menus - which is a shame as the animation and soundtrack really makes them!
In widescreen 16:9 the limit is "7:30", and at 4:3 is 15 min. As it turns out, most of my family have 4:3 TVs, so I switch the DVD I'm making for them for Christmas to 4:3, giving me the extra content space to make the menus as I wanted them.
    Thanks again for the tips!
    Cheers.

  • Total menu duration exceeds 7:30 minutes

I have mostly used iDVD to produce "instant" DVD i.e. no menus, play when inserted types. Now, I am trying to make a nice one as a gift. I am getting the above message even though I have turned off all motion in the video assets. It shows motion menus as taking 79 minutes of time! The actual time of the video from iMovie is 39 minutes. Does this mean that Apple's supplied themes are absolute huge and unusable? There is an imported 1 minute audio file (non copy-protected) playing during the menu display but, other than the Apple supplied animation, there is now no motion from my edited video showing (unfortunately). For your information this being burnt on a single layer DVD with 16:9 formated video. I am aware of the limits of 7:30 for motion menus with this format but it seems to me that, with all motion turned off on the video drop zones, there shouldn't be a problem. Please advise,
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Rich,
Thanks for your response. I tried to do what you described but the menus size still exceeded the allowed limit in iDVD. Also, since the files were shot in 16:9 format, the moving menus looked "squeezed" and when you clicked on them all that showed was the 5 or 6 second exported clip, not the full length of the chapter that the small video file was supposed to represent.
I started looking a little closer at the software and noticed that there was a "set loop length" slider at the top of the window when you clicked on the "menu" button on the lower right of the of the project window. It had been set to the movie's length of time, 39 minutes. After sliding the the setting to the left, it reset itself to allow only 4 minutes maximum run. I set it for 1.5 minutes and now the DVD is burning. I believe that everything is now working well.
Thanks again for you offering your help.
    Take care,
    Greg

  • IDvd "Total Duration exceeds 15 Minutes"

I am working on a project on iDvd and it will not let me burn my project to a Dve because it says that the total menu exceeds 15 minutes. any ideas on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated.

I ran into this same issue the other day, when using sub-menus... Turns out the audio track for the sub-menu options were set to loop for the entire song duration... Add this up across the several sub-menus, and it clearly exceeds the 15 min menu duration limit within iDVD.
Limiting the audio loops to a shorter duration within all the sub-menus solved this issue for me.

  • Cannot build DVD menu because of Total menu size exceeds limit

Encore won't build my project when i compile it but when i do the check project it shows no error. It starts building and when half of it is done, the error appears and stops the compiling. I have tried reducing the size of all my videos and putting them in MPEG-2 DVD format but it didn't change anything. Since the check feature doesn't see the errors i'm thinking it must be some glitch and i would like to know how to get passed it.
Anyone knows how i can fix this ?

It's not Encore, but the DVD-spec. that is standing in the way. The complete Menuing of the DVD may not span a .VOB, which is ~ 1GB in size. The only course of action is to find ways to trim your Menus and their navigation to below that 1GB limit - the max size of the first .VOB in the Project.
This is for the Menus and all of their Assets, and not the rest of your Project's MPEG-2 files. Those can span several .VOB's.
Please tell us more about your Menus, their number, any Motion/Audio, etc. There might be some suggested methods for trimming those in the details. The more details, the easier it will be for someone to give suggestions that will only lightly impact your Project, and let you get to Burning.
Good luck, and we'll be looking for those details on everything regarding your Menus.

  • IDVD 6 and "menu duration" error

I have created an iMovie and then an iDVD project. When I attempt to burn an .img file I got an error: "Total menu duration exceeds 15 minutes" The Loop Duration goes to 12:14 minutes. How do I correct this? I'm really getting frustrated on this.

I have a few wedding projects(1-2 hours)I am trying to export at full hd quality, than burn in idvd. After rendering for 8hrs I receive error code that states "file is too big". Please help? compressing tips without losing quality? or any other exporting alternatives?

    Hey Z,
Thank you for the tip on exporting by media browser (large) from imovie. But of course, if it's not one thing it's another. Now that I figured how to export a large file from imovie, I have an idvd issue. I followed the instructions for burning from idvd and changing the encoding to professional quality and the burn speed to x4, but I am receiving an error that states the following,
Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn your DVD, change the encoder setting in the Project Info window.
    Project:
    - total project duration: 79:04 minutes
    - total project capacity: 4.327 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)
    Menus:
    - number of menus in project: 1 menus
    - total menu duration: 0:39 minutes
    - total menu capacity: 37.370 MB
    Movies:
    - total movies duration: 78:25 minutes
    - total movies capacity: 4.291 GB
I have searched in the idvd forum for similar issues and I am stumped at this point. I have tried deleting the encoding assets and re launching idvd with the changed preferences, and still the same error. I know you mentioned something about free hard drive space available, and I have very little left. 4GB to be exact due to massive hours of non-edited footage. I am not sure if this is why, but I do not recall ever needing free space to burn memory onto a separate dvd. I would be more than happy if I am wrong, and it would be a quick fix. Otherwise, the technical nightmare continues. It's all a learning process and your expertise is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  • Project duration exceeds limit

    hey,
I made a movie in iMovie and exported it to iDVD. After the export process it says "project duration exceeds limit".
My movie is 82 min long and 4.35 GB. Why can it not be burned onto a 4.7GB DVD???
is there a possibility to burn it onto 2 different DVDs, because I do not want to loose any quality.
    thanks in advance
    Thomas

Possibly you set the wrong encoding setting:
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.
