IDVD video back to Apple TV

How do I convert an iMovie video burned onto a DVD with iDVD back to iTunes so that I can watch it on my Apple TV?

I get the feeling we aren't necessarily talking about home videos here. Make no mistake, there's a clear difference between output from each of these applications, this is particularly apparent with low quality source DVD's which I'm afraid most home made DVD's are.
I think we're advising about iDVD created DVDs in essence as per the OP's question....
The source of the video is irrelevant really, as it will be the quality it is
Speed or quality, it's a simple choice, anyone who tries to tell you can have both is mistaken. If you are happy with your process, stick with it.
I've recently come to think MPEGStreamclip may offer superior conversion of video, though I've not done many objective side by side tests. You may have done so with some of your home videos. However, I suspect that as with many of us creating DVDs may now be low down the list of things we want to dod, when chances are the MPEG-2 encoding will degrade the source if you're only going to re-encode in h264.
That's why I'm saying it would be interesting to maybe post some conversions via both of home video footage, encoded with similar resolution/fps etc.
You also have high-end video software, does MPEGStreamclip beat that too?
Or, is that a simplicity vs quality argument with no distinct benefit for FCP?

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • HT1583 When I render my project in IDVD, video and audio runs properly, but when I burn it in professional quality and burning is finished there was no audio on the last two chapters, one audio is attached to the clip and the other one is from itunes, pls

Hi, please help me When I render my project in IDVD, video and audio runs properly, but when I burn it in professional quality and burning is finished there was no audio on the last two chapters, one audio is attached to the clip and the other one is from itunes, pls help

    Hi
    My first two thoughts
    • Shared to Media Browser - BUT as Large or HD - try Medium !
    • audio from iTunes - use to go silent
    - in iTunes
    - Create a new PlayList with needed audio
    - BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
    - use the files on this CD in Your Movie project - I ALWAYS DO - and only use .aiff ever - never .mp3'
    My notes on this:
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    Minuscular - - 176x144
    Mobile - - - - - 480x360
    Medium - - - - 640x480
    Large - - - - - - 720x540    960x540
    HD - - - - - - - - 1280x720
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Apple DVI to Video Adapter vs Apple PAL DVI to Video Adapter

I've just bought my mum a Mac mini (for Christmas) and although it will almost certainly be mostly used with a VGA monitor she has it would be interesting to see what the picture would be like on her fairly new (CRT) television. (If it's good enough she might prefer it plugged in there - especially since I've also got her a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard - plus wireless networking for accessing the Internet et cetera.) The Apple Store (UK) shows two "suitable" connectors...
    a) Apple DVI to Video Adapter
    b) Apple PAL DVI to Video Adapter
My local Apple Store (Meadowhall / Sheffield) only has the former and someone I spoke to there yesterday reckoned that it does exactly the same as the latter. I found that hard to believe so called the online Apple Store - yet they couldn't tell me the difference either. So, perhaps someone out there in the Big Wide (European PAL System User) World can help me. If so then perhaps you could also tell me what the quality of the picture is like - though I appreciate that such would be dependant on the television itself.
Incidentally, my girlfriend has a current range iBook and I bought her the corresponding lead for that a while back - the image quality on my (admittedly aging) television not only being rather poor but also only in black and white regardless as to which of the two connections we used. (Her digital still camera plugs into the Composite Video port on the television and a colour picture appears.) The problem sounds like NTSC is being output (the television's not able to handle that) but given that she's got a "British" iBook I suspect the problem is with the television itself. I've actually yet to try that with my mum's television but I will soon - so, perhaps, proving if it's my antique display that's at fault. The VGA output on the iBook is, by the way, fine.
Mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.3)
Mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.3)
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I'm fairly sure you will need the PAL adapter if you are feeding a PAL television set. VGA is VGA, regardless of country of origin (so to speak), but composite video is specific to the TV system in use!
The other reply, about the setting the iBook for PAL output, sounds sensible if the IBook produces composite video directly.

  • Volume control for video playback through Apple TV2

I am trying to configure the volume settings used on airplay through apple TV2 and a macbook pro and Iphone4 all with most recent updates.
I am using the apple remote app on my iphone to control the apple tv.
    Whats working:
Using the pandora app on my iphone through aiplay to the apple tv, I can control the volume using the plus and minus buttons on the side of the iphone for volume control. Very cool and easy.
Using the apple remote app on my iphone I can control the itunes volume of different speakers by clicking on the airplay icon and using a slider.  Not as cool as using the hard +/- buttons but still works.
    Whats not working:
Controling volume on appleTV2 through the iphone remote app for video playbacks like netflix, and youtube.
Why I want this: RIght now I can control most of the multimedia right from my iphone including cranking the music up:) But when I switch over to video(Netlfix, Youtube) I have to get out another remote (stereo reciever) to control the volume. It seems we are so close to being able to control everything off the iphone, the only thing missing is volume control for video playback.
Is there a setting that can be changed or a solution I havent found?
    Thanks

Same problem with TV3. HDMI volume output is not adjustable, neither with the original Apple remote nor with any universal. Why ? Every simple settop-box is able to be volume adjusted. And a Mac Mini too ?!!!
I use a flatscreen TV. it has 3 HDMI inputs and one optical out for the audio going to an amp standing behind it. The sound of the TV is switched to go to the optical out.
HDMI 1 is connected to the satellite settop box with its  own remote control ( channel +/-, volume +/- etc. ) it work s fine.
HDMI 2 is connected to the MacMini HDMI out with its own remote control ( channel/music +/-, volume +/- ) it works fine too.
HDMI 3 was connected to Apple TV3 with its own remote control ( channel/music +/- but no volume ). I sent the TV3 back to Apple.
What's going wrong in the mind of Apple ? Why is the HDMI volume output of the MacMini adjustable with the Apple remote, and the TV3 not ?
I want not to discuss, wether a 4th remote control is useful or not. I don't want it. I want to adjust the volume with the originl remote control of the specific unit I use, because I need it anyway. It worked since years, but not with Apple TV3.
How can we help Apple to open the volume +/- function on their own remote control ?

  • Is there a way to exort an iDVD project back to iMovie?

    Hi.
    I need some help please!
I made a training video a couple of years ago for a friend's company. She now would like to have additional copies burned. The problem is I saved the dvd project on my hard drive, but I deleted the imovie project.
Of course, this time she needs to change her company logo in the intro (which would require me to remove the first 5 seconds of the original movie)... and I'm unable to edit it. Can I extract the movie some how? or if save it as an "archive" would I then be able to move it to iMovie?
    I would really appreciate feedback!

The answer depends on what you have available.
The best method is to locate the movie footage used in the original iMovie and reimport that into another iMovie project and create a new iDVD project with it. There will be no loss of quality.
Just so you know, saving your iDVD project is nearly useless without saving the movie that is in it. An iDVD project is not self-contained. Think of it as a file that holds aliases. When you create an iDVD project, the iMovie used is referenced, not physically moved into the iDVD project. Same for any photos or audio files used. It is unlike an iMovie project (at least version 6) where the movies, photos and audios ARE moved into the iMovie project. When iDVD burns a project, it collects the referenced files for the burn, but does not keep them permanently in its project. So, if you have saved any iDVD projects, and you did NOT save the media used, all you have is the 'shell' of the iDVD project. If you open it, iDVD will not be able to locate the missing media and will alert you that it cannot find the proper files.
If this is the case, and you no longer have the original movie footage, or you don't want to have to re-edit it, you will need to get one of the burned DVD disks, and extract the movie from it.
Any type of extraction of compressed data will result in some loss of quality because the data must be decompressed and then recompressed again for another DVD.
If you don't have one of the DVDs you previously burned for this project, you will not be able to create another iDVD project from the first one, and without the original movie footage, you are out of luck.
If you do have one of the old DVDs, you can use a variety of software to extract out the video: Handbrake, Ripit, or Streamclip. I have not looked into Handbrake, but many use it and think it works well. Ripit will extract the video into format for iMovie....seems easy enough as reviewed in MacWorld recently. Others use Streamclip.
If you think that you will need to create more DVDs of this project, or if you would like to save your complete iDVD projects in the future so you can burn more DVDs, you should do a 'Save as Disk Image' from within the iDVD project for each one. This process looks exactly like the burning process, with the same encoding and taking the same length of time to complete, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk.
The advantages of having a disk image file are several:
First, it is self-contained, with all the media data encoded in it. So now, you CAN safely delete both the original iDVD project and its original iMovie without losing the ability to burn disks in the future.
Another advantage is that it can be a backup for all your burned DVD disks. What if a disk is damaged/breaks/melts/ etc.? With a disk image file, you just burn another one.
Disk image files save drive space because they are smaller than the combination iDVD project /iMovie projects used to create them.
You never need to worry about renaming, moving, deleting or changing any of the media used in any of your projects causing iDVD to lose connection with them. All the media encoding is in the disk image file.
And, another advantage is that you can burn DVDs from the disk image file, using Disk Utility or Toast, getting more consistent burns, since you are not depending on iDVD to pull in the media.
Here are some helps for creating a disk image in iDVD:

If you have some previously burned DVD disks and you think you would like to have had disk images for them, you can create a disk image file from a burned DVD disk.
    Here are instructions for that:

  • 5.2 update does not send audio from video played via Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices or AirPort Express.

I just updated my Apple TV to release 5.2, which is supposed to give Apple TV the ability to "Send stereo audio from movies, TV shows, and other videos on Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs)." Problem is, this does not seem to be the case.
I have two AirPlay enabled devices:
    1) Bose SoundLink Air
    2) AirPort Express
In the Apple TV menu, I selected Settings, AirPlay, Bose SoundLink Air. I then played a video; the audio from the video played from my projector's speakers - not from the Bose speaker. I then went back to Apple TV's Settings/AirPlay and selected "Airport Express" (which connected via an aux cable to a speaker)...audio continued to play over my projector's speaker. I can, by the way, play audio on both the Bose and the speaker connected to the Airport Express if I select either of them from the AirPlay menu.
Am I doing something wrong, or is the 5.2 update not working as described?

No. But, are your speakers only connected to the AE or are they also connected to an amplifier?
You would need to use a Toslink cable to go from the Apple TV to the speakers/amp.
I don't use this or know a lot about it, but it is wildly popular, inexpensive and may be of help:

i cant add my old videos back to my itunes library after my upgrade to IOS5.

Files are already in MP4 format, tried to reconvert them already. just installed itunes,

    Really need help~
    Thanks in advance!

I also have the problem of larger mp4's not showing up in iTunes I know they are good valid iPod files because I have played them before on my iPod but removed them and now can't add them again after upgrading to 6.0.5.20 I have tried on 2 seperate computers.
Does anyone know where Apple's 'report a bug' webpage has been hidden?

  • Putting videos back on iPhone?

I've been carefully backing up all of my camera roll onto an external hard drive so I can remove the larger video files once I'm done editing them in iMovie on the phone. I thought I could move them back via drag-and-drop on my laptop. But no go.
Any suggestions how I might get a saved native iPhone video back onto my iPhone? They are too big to e-mail.
    Thanks in advance.

    From page 58:
"You can also sync photos and videos from any folder on your Mac or PC that contains images."
This was the first thing I tried. I created a folder specfically for this, put in the videos I wanted back on my phone and selected this folder in the Photos tab. When syncing was done, it showed a (0) after the folder for the number of images synced, and that folder did not appear on my phone at all.
Hmmm. I think I'll call Apple tech support. I'll report their response.

  • I've downloaded quicktime but every time I try to play a video on the apple website using internet explorer it asks me to download quicktime. If I use safari it works fine. Any suggestions

I've downloaded quicktime but every time I try to play a video on the apple website using internet explorer it asks me to download quicktime again yet if I'm safari it plays fine. Any suggestions?

That sounds like IE wants you to install the QuickTime ActiveX control.
Go back to the page you're getting the message on. At the bottom of the screen, can you see a long rectangular box asking you to allow/install something? (Sorry, it's been a while since I've seen the box in question, so I can't recall the precise wording.)
If so, allow/OK in that box. After the ActiveX control has gone in, can you see the videos in IE?

  • How to copy photos/videos back to iPhone's Camera Roll?

Genius bar told me to reset my 3GS to try solving an unrelated problem, but they mentioned I should save my photos first. I copied the photos and videos from the Iphone/Internal Storage/DCIM/100Apple directory onto my PC's hard drive.
However, after I reset the iphone, I found that I cannot copy the files back into the iPhone's /100Apple directory. What gives? The device/folder is not listed as read-only, but I'm still not allowed to copy the photos back.
I should note that I am not interested in syncing the photos as an album through itunes, I want the iphone photos and videos back in the Camera Roll. Is there a way to do this?

A reset is just holding the power and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and ignoring the slide to power off screen. This is mearly a reboot like a computer. A restore wipes the phone, reinstalls the OS and the native apps. If you restore from a backup, it then takes the backup it made of the phone and resinstalls all of that data. If you restore as a new phone, all it does is reinstall the OS and native apps and the phone is like it was when you bought it, except it will have the latest OS if there has been a change since you bought it. Many times, if someone has some type of problem with the phone,it can be traced back to corruption in a file, and restoring from a backup will just restore the corrupted file. Restoring as new allows to start fresh.
As I mentioned earlier, leaving photos in the camera roll can be dangerous as you run the risk of losing them, as you have seen. The ability to copy items into the camera roll folder is like copying material into the OS, and Apple has not allowed that in the past. That is why they designed the syncing of pictures to the photo library. Another issue that has cropped up lately is the fact that some pictures saved from the Internet, MMS or email into the camera roll has caused some issues with the iPhone being recognized by the computer as having pictures on it. It becomes necessary to delete those photos to enable photo importing again. Something else to be mindful of until they fix it. Just a good idea to import the photos so you have them in case of a failure on the phone.
