IDVD - what brand of disk and burn speed?

I have an ibook and bought a Sony DVD burner. I have OS 10.3.9, and the Sony DVD burner said it was MAC compatible for OS 10.4 or later. So I got Patchburn and the DVD works. However, I've got a really crappy burn when i watch it on a DVD player. I read somewhere on here that it could be the make of the blank DVD, that Verbatim's are best (why?), and that it might be my recording speed...instead of 20x perhaps 1x would be better (I believe that's what I read). My questions are this: what are good DVDs to purchase for recording, and how do I control the burning speed for the Sony or is it within iDVD?

Verbatim discs are highly recommended around here; I also like Sony discs. Higher quality discs have fewer manufacturing errors, and the better dyes are more durable/compatible. Here's a discussion:
www.digitalfaq.com/media/burnquality.htm
Slower burn speeds also mean fewer errors on the final disc. Most of the time it takes to "burn" a DVD is actually encoding the video files, so the extra time it takes to burn at 1x or 2x isn't that much different than 8x (that must be quite a burner at 20x DVDs).
To best control the burn speed, there are two options but both involve creating a disc image (in iDVD, Save a Disc Image). This virtual DVD can then be tested, and if it works well, you'll then copy the DVD onto your media. Burning the copy is accomplished with Roxio Toast or Apple's Disk Utility.

  • What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

The slower the speed, the fewer burn errors (or, in other words, you'll burn fewer "coasters"). I've always tried to burn at a slower speed, i.e. 2x - 4x. I'd rather wait a few minutes more and I've never had any burn errors.

  • What are the uploads and downloads speeds

what are the upload and download speeds of the time capsule?

what are the upload and download speeds of the time capsule?
If you are asking about Internet download and upload speeds, this is limited by your service plan with your Internet provider.
It might be something like 10 Mbps download and 2 Mpbs upload, for example. That's because on most home plans, the download speeds are typically much faster than the upload speeds....unless you opt for a business type connection at significantly higher cost.
The Time Capsule is capable of much faster speeds than your service provider can ever deliver, so the bottleneck on your network will always be the Internet connection...not the Time Capsule.

  • What should my download and upgrade speed be for my macbook pro?

I have done alot of research on this but i can not figure out what the avery download and upgarde speed should be for my macbook pro???????????? My mac is 2 months old and has alot of memory space and is fully upragded. Please help me!

You posted in the OS 9 forum instead of the MacBook Pro forum. To get answers to your question, next time post in the proper forum. See https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa  I'll request that Apple relocate your post.

  • Disk Utility Burn Speed Option

    Hello,
I'm trying to burn a bootable CD with my MacBook. When I go to choose the burn speed the only options I get are 8x and 24x. I have tried burning at 8x but when I go to use the disk, my machine tells me there are errors on the disk and it cannot proceed. I'm assuming I might have better success if I burn at a lower speed.
How can I get more burn speed options to appear in Disk Utility?

There must be a free disc burning utility tat you can download and try. Use that at 8x too and see what gives.
Also it may actually be the media.

Have you posted this question on the MacBook Pro discussion?

I am not sure what you mean. iMovieHD to iMovie??? Do you mean iMovieHD to iDVD? If you have made a movie with iMovieHD, you can open iDVD create a simple theme and drag your iMovieHD project to iDVD, check to make sure it will play, then burn your DVD in iDVD.
    That should work.

  • IDVD can't finish multiplexing and burning

    Hi,
I recently upgraded for Maverics, from snow lepard. I am trying to burn my project in iDVD. It's dual layer dvd and project is two video files with 6 scenes selections of the lenth of 3hrs alltogether. I did similar burning few weeks ago on snow lepard with 2.5hrs long video no problemo..
This time I am spending 2nd day getting just negative responses from iDVD.
I am burning it PAL, 16:9, 7.7GB dual layer dvd and I tried profesional quality, didn't work, than both other options with same result. Tried to cut down to smallest file and retry still without success.
Is it just too big, or another problem with file..? or could that be Maverics not working the way it should?
In activity monitor I noticed that Pro transcoder tool is red not responding as well as enconder and thumbnail server and codec 32bit red out also..
Please any advices? I am thinking of downgrading back to snow lepard.., or do you have another advice??
Thanks very much for your reply guys!

Revert to your SL backup and do the burning. Simpler than trying to solve it with Mavericks, especially since Apple dropped iDVD from iLife.

  • Difficulties playing iDVD's on my MACBOOK and powerbook

I have burned some dvd's and supervideo discs on my MAcbook Pro 17 inch 2,4 duo, with iDVD but they wont play on dvd player. They DO play on my dvd player on my television, but not on my MAcbook or Powerbook
any ideas why these discs are readable only on my external dvd devices, and not on my poer or MAcbook pro?
    thanks

    Hi a
Yes this is a common question.
    a. DVD is burned with iDVD and burn speed is not set.
    b. DVD is probably x16
    c. DVD might be of a cheep brand
    Improve DVD quality in iDVD08
    • I use the Professional encoding quality.
    • The free space on Your internal (start-up) hard disk matters and should read 25Gb or more
    • Way to import movie to iDVD: Don't use "Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie = destructive
both to the final result BUT ALSO to Your original movie materials. If photos then You need to
re-import those and re-edit them. When iMovie renders it destroys.
I drop my movie project (icon with a Star on it) into theme window of iDVD.
    • I BURN at an as slow speed as possible eg x1 = less burn errors on disk
THIS CAN BE SET in iDVD08 but not iDVD 1 - 6 where You need to do a DiskImage and burn it
with Apple Disk Util tool or Toast™
    • I use Verbatim DVD-R (there are other brands but some are really lousy)
    • DVD-R (No +R or +/-RW)
Often I do a DiskImage first. Then play it with Apple DVD-Player to judge the result before burning.

  • Idvd wont create a disk image

    I am using imovie '09 v. 8.0.6 and idvd v 7.04 which came with ilife '09
As I am still using a PowerPC my future upgrade is limited until I move upgrade intel cpu.
I am trying (without success) to burn a 40 min movie to idvd. The project also includes a 67 photo slideshow, all pictures are around 18mp jpegs.  I have 42gb of free disc space before I commence the burn and on the last two attempts, I have had the following problems.
    1. idvd wont complete encoding when using Revolution theme.  Also, Revolution chapter theme (second screen) will not play audio depsite the inspector showing the audio is enable in the audio drop zone.  On my last attempt, on exporting from imovie into idvd, no audio soundtrack in idvd despite the project worked fine within imovie.
    2. I feel Revolution theme has a bug whereby audio won't play on the chapter page despite it being enabled in the audio inspector window.
I have deleted my com.apple.idvd.plist file as suggest in other threads (as I understood idvd would then create a new one) but the problem prevails.
I have also repaired all my disk permission through disk utility as also suggested.
Can I reinstall just idvd from my ilife disk and would this affect the integrity of any existing projects? Alternatively has anyone any suggestions on how I may finish the burn to a disk image.
PS All worked well on my last project a few weeks ago.... I have a hunch it's the file size.  All suggestions welcome.
    Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding Bengt.  Here is the workaround.
    Problem:
imovie '09 (8.0.6) looses all soundtrack when sharing to idvdv 7.0.4 plus idvd wouldn't allow creation of a disk image.
    Findings:
It would appear all my problems start with the fact my machine - PowerMac G5 1.8ghz dual proc. 4 GB RAM IS NOT sufficient to run imovie '09.  Depsite the fact I was able to produce my project in imovie, the problems began as soon as I started to share and burn the project with idvd.
See confirmation of this point from Appleman on this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15443520#15443520
    Solution:
    1. I copied the imovie project to an external drive connected to my PowerMac G5 via FW800.
Note it is vital you follow this process to copy an imovie project from one drive to another:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19548.html
This process ensures all links are preserved.  This worked perfectly for me and I understand it is the correct way to move imovie 09 projects to other drives.
    2.  I then disconnected the external Firewire drive connected to my PowerMac and connected it to my MacBook (Intel) to the Firewire drive using FW 400 to 800 cable.  After ensuring the drive could be viewed in finder by using the drives mount software, I then loaded imovie '09 on the MacBook.
and the drive then appeared in the imovie project window.
    3. Share project to idvd, complete project in idvd by adding a slideshow.
    4. Created a disk image in idvd - Note - I saved the idvd project and the disk image back to the external firewire drive given I had 1tb free space.
The problems were (imo) all caused by using an old platform PM G5 non Intel and lack of internal disk space.
Thanks Bengt and Appleman for all your help.

  • Can I use iDVD to create a project to burn on a Windows PC?

I might be needing to create a DVD for a job I am applying for. I have a 12" iBook with just a combo drive. My Mom's Gateway computer does have a DVD burner. I'm wondering if it would be possible to transfer over the iDVD project to her computer and burn it that way. Or, would it be better to just transfer over the video file from iMovie and create the disc on her computer?
    Thanks for your help.

wouldn't recommend terminal commands for beginners (other than showing them how to reset_all) and even if you happen to be an experienced mac user; i'd proceed with caution....
Agreed. But since there is no simple way to tranfer a Mac based file to a PC file. The terminal command is not bad after all. Except if Joey don't mind incurring expense of buying 3rd party software.

  • Read and write speeds of PCI-E SSD 256GB

What are the read and write speeds exceeded with a 2014 Mac Mini with the 256GB PCI-E SSD from Apple? Thanks.
PS: I was thinking about getting the 2014 Mac Mini with these specs at $899.99:
2.6GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz)
    8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
    256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
    Intel Iris Graphics
    User's Guide (English)
    Accessory Kit

8 to 9 hundre MB/s for the PCIe SSDs vs 500 MB/s for a starndard SSD

  • Idvd ejects the disk during the "multiplexing and burning" / "writing lead-in" portion. When I check, there's nothing on the disk

idvd ejects the disk during the "multiplexing and burning" / "writing lead-in" portion. When I check, there's nothing on the disk.

What brand and type of disk are you using?  What speed are you burning at?  Are you able to create a disk image of the project?
    Try this basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
    User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
    User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • HT1583 What blank DVD disks are compatible with burning a film from Idvd on an applemac?

I have just finalized a project in imovie and this message came up on the screen - "Your project exceeds the maximum duration. To burn your DVD, change the encoder setting in the project info window".
I have changed the encoder setting from best fit to Professional but I am having burning the film to a dvd. The computer tells me to load a dvd or my driver is busy - which it isn't it only has a blank dvd disk in it. So I was wondering whether my DVD disks are compatible with the applemac computer!
    HELP!

    Hi
So I was wondering whether my DVD disks are compatible with the applemac computer!
And if You tell - what brand and type You are trying to use - I will be so much easier !
But most often the problem is
    • Do NOT - insert the DVD disk before iDVD specifically as You to do this. As Desktop will catch it and try to format it as a Data-DVD - Not what You want (a Video-DVD) as Data-DVD can not be played on standard DVD-players.
To get it even better I do
    • Use Verbatim - Never Memorex or NoName etc cheap brands (as they don't work OK for Me)
    • DVD-R - as they play on even older DVD-players
    • Burn Speed - set down to x2 or x4 MAX ! - Best IS NOT BEST at all here !
    Yours Bengt W

  • All of a sudden my iDVD player doesn't want to burn 2-part movies or series. It says there is an error and says I have a blank dvd in the drive. What to do?

My idvd has stopped burning when it involves a 2-part movie or series. It starts alright but then stops and gives and error, not a code just says there was an error and the little box comes up that says I inserted a blank dvd and asks what I want to do. I need help with this and would really appreciate someone's experience.

Then I guess that the free space on Your Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk is less than 5Gb or worse - I never go under 25Gb when doing a DVD.
    To make a DiskImage
    • Start a new iDVD project (as there is an iDVD bug luring in old projects (closed one time))
    • Arrange all material: Movies, SlideShows and extras etc
    • Go up to File Menu - and down to Save as a DiskImage
(You need a minimum of 25Gb to let this work OK)
    • Then close iDVD
    • Double click on the .img file You just created on DeskTop
    • Start DVD-player tool (If it doesn't jump up in action by it self)
    • See that all plays as You want it to do
    • Close DVD-Player tool
    • Open Disk Util tool (Application folder / Tool folder)
    • Now to the left - select the .img file
    • Go up and click on BURN
    • When asked to do so - Insert a new DVD
    • NOW SELECT TO SET DOWN BURN SPEED TO x4 or x1 (as this gives a significantly better result)
    I Use
    • Verbatim
    • DVD-R
And get a very good result
OK mishmumken - I never figured out WHY I'm such a BLAB ! - You concentrated this to 100% Valu - GREAT
