IDVD will no longer open or start

I know this topic has been discussed before, but I'm still looking for an answer. I have an Intel-based MBP, running Snow Leopard from a fresh install(not an upgrade install).
I cannot get iDVD to open. When I click on the icon in Applications, I get the initial splash screen, but when I try to create a new project, entering the title, as soon as I press create, the screen disappears, the icon for iDVD remains in the dock, and nothing further happens.
I'm using iDVD 7.04. My MBP has all current updates. I have tried all suggestions offered on the forums, and online, as near as I can tell, with no success.
When I try to quit iDVD, as started above, I'm asked if I want to save my uncompleted project. I always have to force quit at this point.
I was able to use iDVD before my upgrade to SL. I do not install all of the applications from iLife, as packaged with my MBP. Could it be something I'm missing when I do an Install/Erase to install SL? Should I install all applications in iLife, even though I have no use for Garage Band, ect., just to see if that helps? Is it just SL creating problems?
Thank you for youre help!!
Again, none of the suggested fixes here have helped. I have no trouble with my MBP, or SL, otherwise.....

Hi
I always have to force quit at this point.
This gives small errors every time on hard disk - resulting in a severe problem
now or later.
I would
• Trash iDVD pref file
• Run - Repair Permissions - Apple Disk Util tool
• Run - Repair Hard Disk - Apple Disk Util tool - BUT YOU HAVE TO START from DVD or
other external hard disk to do this - Can't do brain surgery on one self !
Else my list
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named.
com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK will work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iDVD’09 v. 7.0.4, Mac OS X.5.8 AND QuickTime 7.6.4 - is OK (does work under Leopard)
• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz
or
Macintosh HD/Users/Your log-in//Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz
• Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
iDVD updated ?
Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
No of Colors - must be set to millions
EdinSF writes that, The 10.6.3 update with an Open GL fix seems to have taken care of the problem.

  • IDVD will no longer open

My iDVD application will no longer open. It simply tells me that "You cannot use this version of the application iDVD with this version of Mac OS X." So I spoke with 5 Mac Genius' at two different stores and this questions simply stumped all of them. It obviously sounds like a version issue, however all the tech genius' emphatically told me that I do NOT have to upgrade iLife and that the program should still work. I am running OS 10.5.4. Please HELP!!!!

I just discovered that I am having the same problem. My version of iDVD is older (4.0.1), but my iPhoto (4.0.3) still works.
I upgraded from 10.3 to Leopard about a month ago and this is the fist time I am attempting to open iDVD since doing that.
I have tried the permissions repair and downgrading to Quicktime 7.4 (from another thread) and neither has helped. Do I need to restart for it to take effect? Or is my version of iDVD simply too old?

  • Suddenly Can't Open PDFs. Starting about three days ago firefox will no longer open any PDFs. I get a blank page in a new tab.

Suddenly Can't Open PDFs in Firefox. Starting about three days ago firefox will no longer open any PDFs. I get a blank page in a new tab. Nice timing, with finals and everything where I need to view PDFs of practice tests.

Mozilla Firefox did not do their job, here. I am an editor and am constantly online. Now, I have to go to Safari to download PDFs. I reinstalled an earlier version of Firefox to get rid of the problem, but somehow Firefox has deactivated my PDF download feature. This is a total wreck and I am so angry I could spit. Stop launching new products until you have fully tested them. Customers are not your guinea pigs. Please fix this now- and fire a few idiots on the way- the ones who let this happen.

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavaliable. - Then: The file 'C:ProgramData\Apple\Installer Cashe\Apple Software update 2.1.3.127 is not a valid installation package for the product Apple Software Update. Try to find the installation package 'Apple Software Update.msi' in a folder from which you can install the Apple Software Update
    1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

Does it go through properly this time? If so, do you still get the 7?

  • ITunes will no longer open

    Hi there,
I have installed the newer version of iTunes, and it will no longer open when I click on the desktop icon, or use the Start/Programs/iTunes/iTunes. All I see is the hourglass for about 2 seconds, and then nothing. I have uninstalled and re-installed many times.
I have also read thru some articles here and have tried:
Go to My Computer\Tools\Folder Options\View and then choose "View All Hidden Files". Click OK. In My Computer, go to these files- local disk C:\documents and settings\all users\application data\apple computer\itunes\sc info and inside that is a file called SC Info.sidb and delete that. Check back to see if it opens after you complete that.
    Still nothing works
I have disabled both Spyware and Sygate Firewalls ~ still nothing. I am unable download any music to my iPod at this time.
If you could offer some other suggestions, I would really appreciate it ~ or even if I could re-install the original version of iTunes, but don't know where this could be found.
    Thanks
    Windows XP

Hi, I've just managed to solve the same problem on my PC running WindowXP. As a clarification: I do NOT have Norton Security etc. or Norton Anti-Virus etc. installed; my search on these forums have revealed that there are problems associated with the above progs. In any case, a summary of the problem:
*Installed the iTunes package which came on disc for my iPod nano. Upgraded/Downloaded etc, etc, per instructions.
    *Upgraded to iTunes 6.0.4.
    * Launched upgraded iTunes. It worked. I was happy. I fiddle around with my new, fancy gadget.
    * I go to work and then return. Attempted to launch iTunes. It didn't work. Fiddled around with running programs. iTunes suddenly came to life. I was happy.
    * I shutdown iTunes.
*Attempted to launch iTunes again, didn't work - mouse shows 'busy' animation with hourglass then resumes; iTunes doesn't start-up. I was unhappy.
*Attempted to launch quicktime, same result - doesn't start-up. I was puzzled.
*deleted the SC info.sidb file as you have done, attempted to launch iTunes and quicktime, unsuccessful. I was unhappy.
    Solution (at least, for me)
    * I decided to risk utterly destroying my computer.
    * Uninstalled quicktime.
    * Downloaded and installed quicktime standalone.
    * Rebooted.
    * Tested quicktime - launched, and was working.
    * Attempted to launch iTunes - no-go.
    * I scream "you shall not defeat me!"
    * Via control panel->Add/Remove Programs, I uninstalled iTunes.
    * Rebooted per on-screen instructions.
    * Reinstalled iTunes 6.0.4.
    * Attempted to launch iTunes - launched successfully. I sighed in utter, complete relief.
Some oddities with my install: I didn't select iTunes as the default player for my music files, I don't quite know how this changes things; I suspect it doesn't.
Anyway, I rebooted about 3-4 times to test if iTunes would continue launching. It seems to be working fine. Knowing how fragile software is, however, it's bound to fall apart again. Or maybe I'm being pessimistic.

  • Itunes will no longer open on my computer

I tunes will no longer open on my computer.   I unloaded ITUNES and then LOADED it again and it still still will not open on my compuer....I click the ITUnes Icon...looks like it wants to load, then I get a window that says, do you want to allow this program to make changes to your computer'  I click yes, then the screen gets cartoonish...all icons get fuzzy..and Itunes still does not open.  I have removed Itunes again, to get my comptuer screen back to the normal.   What the **** is going on?   It's always opened up just fine.  Help??

Take a look at one of these Apple documents ->

Do you see any error messages? Is there a number associated with the message or in the report?

  • Spreadsheet will no longer open in iCloud

Just yesterday a file I've been working on for months will no longer open in Numbers.  The file is in iCloud and the first error I received was a warning on my Mac that the file could not be Autosaved.  I tried to save it manually (to the cloud) but it wouldn't do that either.  I closed out the application on the Mac and restarted it.  I then tried to open the file and got the "You need a newer version of Numbers..." message.  I'm using Numbers 3.1 and have been for a while.  The file in question was created with Numbers 3.x.  I am NOT using an older version of Numbers - I realize that this is usually the problem when that message occurs but it is not the issue here.  I am using 3.1 and have been editing this file with 3.1 for over a month (or every since the update came out).
I also access this same file from my iPad Air (using iOS7).  However, it also will not open the file - it gets an equivalent "newer version" message for iOS.  What's also strange is that on iOS it shows the spreadsheets in iCloud with a preview icon.  Since this problem started yesterday, the file in question now has a generic Numbers icon, similar to the Numbers App icon in iOS7.  What's stranger still is that several other spreadsheets have this same icon and cannot be opened.  Some of these are old files.  Other, newer, files are unaffected and can be opened.
    Anybody have any ideas?

I tried to save it manually (to the cloud) but it wouldn't do that either.
That may be a clue that you should check to make sure iCloud is still active on your machine. System Preferences > iCloud > Documents & Data > Numbers.app.
Also see if your latest iCloud synced documents are there: in Finder   Go > Library > Mobile Documents > com~apple~Numbers.

  • An App I downloaded on my Ipad2 will no longer open?

I have been using the TSN app for months and suddenly it will no longer open. It starts to open and then disappears. I have tried a reset of the my ipad and also downloaded a free app  but nothing is working. What else do I need to do?

It should not matter where you download the app from - iTunes on your computerhero from the purchased tab in the app store. Since nothing else is working, try downloading it again from iTunes on your computer and them sync the app to the iPad.
If the app is in your iTunes library, delete it from there first. Launch iTunes, click on the apps sub heading under the library heading on the left side of the iTunes window, find the app, right click on it and select Delete and begin the deletion process. It is a two question process. When asked in iTunes -  move the app to the trash.

  • Pages 5 document will no longer open in pages 5

I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and afterwards, I had both Pages '09 and Pages 5 in my dock, instead of one of them being in the applications folder. They are both still in my dock. I have looked briefly at Pages 5 and determined that, at this time, I prefer Pages '09. All of my documents were created in Pages '09 and now they will no longer open in Pages '09. (Some will, and I don't know what the difference is between the ones that will and the ones that won't) When I try to open one, it either opens, no problem, or I get the message "The required index.xml file is missing." This message is in a rectangle with an icon representative of Pages '09 (the inkwell). Since it has this icon, I'm assuming that I was trying to open it in the Pages '09 version, which is what I intended o do. Since this didn't work, I tried to right click and "Open with Pages.app (4.0.5)" and got the same message. I was a little afraid to try to open it in Pages 5, since I've heard rumors that this could ruin the document. I would like to be able to use either of the apps but, since I apparently can't do that, I gathered my courage and opened a document in Pages 5. Everything seemed to be okay, so I opened a couple more. One of them, I even was able to edit with no problem. But when I tried to open it again hours later, I got an error message saying ". . . can't be opened because it is from an "unidentified developer". What's going on here? The only people involved in this document are Apple and me. What "unidentified developer" are they talking about? And why was it fine, then a few hours later it was not accessible? If I'm forced to use only Pages 5, I guess I can live with that, but it seems as though I will have to live in constant fear that, at any time, my document will not open. I've read about a lot of other people who are having problems, too, but not this particular one. I'm at a loss and, like everybody else, I have important documents that I need access to. I'm using an iMac and 10.9.4. What to do?? I need my stuff!

    1. You have allowed Apple to auto-upgrade your Mac
    Turn off auto-update here:
Menu > Apple > System Preferences > App Store
    2. The Icons on your dock are Aliases not real apps
They point to where the apps really are which is:
For Pages 5.2.2 in your Applications folder
For Pages '09 in your Applications/iWork folder
    3. You are alternately opening documents randomly with either version of Pages
Both Pages have the same file extension .pages and there is no certainty as to which version opens them when you double click on a file.
right click on the file and choose which version you want to open it
    4. Pages '09 can not open Pages 5 files
Pages 5 can not open Pages '08 files, and will convert and change Pages '09 and Word files.
It will also auto save opened files into its own format.
You can export these back to Pages '09 if you need to:
    Menu > File > Export > Pages '09
    5. Yes Pages 5.2.2 is a marked downgrade
Pages 5.2.2 has a few improvements but has had over 110 features removed and is buggy.
Sooner or later you will not be able to open a file or have it damaged in some way and it has a complex obscure file format largely incompatible with everything else, so you will not be able to rescue the contents of your file. If Pages or some third party server/eMail don't trash your file, eventually Apple will do it for you as it did when it released Pages 5 last September. I recommend using Pages '09 for the time being whilst you look for viable alternatives, some are here already and some are on the way.

The application called VirusScan that comes preloaded on the macbook will no longer open, claiming that it is corrupt and that I must reinstall it.  After looking in the app store it does not appear that said application is available for re-downloading. Is there a special, non-app store place where I am to go for this?
Also, I installed MacKeeper about two-three months ago and am questioning its performance. Looking for input as to whether or not this application helps or hinders my system.

I'll back up Csound on the MacKeeper thing.  In fact, I actually wrote the following about it:
    http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=245
Remove is ASAP.  Do not use the provided uninstalled, as there are widespread reports of pop-ups advertising MacKeeper on your system after incompletely removing it.  Try this:
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
As for VirusScan, Barney is right on the money that it does not come preinstalled on any Mac shipped new from Apple.  However you have gotten it, your best bet is removing it.  See my Mac Malware Guide for more information that will help you understand and avoid Mac malware without relying on anti-virus software.

If you want just the originals, then you can go into the Aperture library (right click on it and do "show package contents"). Inside is a directory called "Masters" and you can find the original files in a bunch of subfolders.
But... you'll lose all adjustments, keywords, and other information, and just have the files as they were imported originally from the cameras.
Easiest is probably to buy Aperture and update everything, and then migrate to the Photos application down the road if that's what you want. Aperture 3.0 came out in 2010 (five years ago!) so it's not like you've upgraded in a while

  • How can I reformat my Mac Book Pro without using disc utility? My laptop keeps crashing, and needs to have everything reinstalled, but disc utility will no longer open, saying it 'quit unexpectedly'. I'm running Mac OS X10.6.8. I've lost install CD.

My laptop keeps crashing. This seems to happen only when it's streaming from sites such as Netflix, YouTube or Spotify.
Also, it stopped being able to run iTunes, and can't download Yosemite.
I want to wipe it and reinstall everything - I've already done a full back up.
The problem is disc utility will no longer open, saying it 'quit unexpectedly':
I'm running Mac OS X10.6.8 and I've lost install CD.
I have no idea what to do, but need to get this sorted as quickly as possible as I need my laptop for work.

Even if you could open Disk Utility you can't reformat a disk while you are booted from it. You will have to use the install CD. Ring the Apple Online Store at the number given at bottom left of this page and give them the serial number of your Mac. You should be able to get the Snow Leopard install disks for a nominal fee.
