Idvd won't burn dual layer movies

Hi. Can someone help me figure out how to make my idvd burn dual layerd movies? I've done everything the same as I always have and it still won't do it. Do I need to buy something other than Sony discs? I'm at my whits end. Any ideas out there?

Read the intro and the Mac OS X section. When you compose a post, you may add a screen shot by clicking the camera button and following the instructions.
Under the cricumstances, I think it's better to start a little further back.
Quit all apps and restart the Mac.
After you've logged back in, first check how much free disk space you have. In Finder, select your hard disk and choose File > Get Info. Look at the General section (if it's not expanded, click the disclosure triangle to the left of the word "General". Check the figure for "Available". If it's not al least 12GB, you need to clear up disk space. You should have at least 12GB free disk space to proceed. (This is not a carved-in-stone figure, but something that should keep you on the safe side. More is better; but there's no need to exaggerate.)
Next, let's check the drive. Press the Option (⌥) key and click the Apple () menu. The first item on the menu should be "System Profiler…" When System Profiler is up and running, under "Contents" you should see the line "Hardware". If it's not expanded, click the disclosure triangle to the left of the word "Hardware". A few lines down, you should see "Disk Burning". Click on it. You should get the details of your DVD drive. "Burn support" should say "Yes"; "DVD-Write" should say "-R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW". If all that is correct, quit System Profiler.
Next, start iDVD. If no project is available, it should show the opening dialogue.
Click on Magic iDVD. In the Magic window, type a short name for "DVD Title". Let's say, Test.
Drag your movie to the "Drop Movies Here" strip.
On the bottom right there are two buttons, "Create Project" and "Burn". Click the "Create Project" button. iDVD should generate and save the project. The Project window should appear.
Choose "Project Info…" from the Project menu. Check the choice for "DVD Type". It should be "Double-Layer (DL) - 7.7GB". If it isn't, make it so. Close the Project Info window.
Now choose File > Burn DVD… Make sure the DVD you insert is indeed a DL (it should be marked as such, and the label should say something like "8.5GB data").
If it fails as before, you should return to the project window. This time, choose File > Save as Disc Image… Save it to a convenient location.
Open Disk Utility. Choose Images > Burn…, select the image saved in the previous step, and try to burn it. If it works, then the problem is with iDVD. (Keep in mind that a DL disc burned with Disk Utility may not work or may cause problems in a DVD player. This is only a test to try to isolate the problem.)
If it doesn't work with Disk Utility either, then the problem is with the drive or the disc. Reset the SMC and try again.

If it still doesn't work, try a different brand of discs, from a different manufacturer (and preferably manufactured in a different country).
If several brands of discs fail, then the problem is likely with the drive. Get a lens cleaning disc and use it to clean the drive. If that still doesn't solve the problem, then it's probable that the drive is damaged and should be replaced. If the drive is old (4–5 years) the likelihood that it's damaged increases.

  • Optical drive won't burn dual layer dvd

Yes, mine is capable of burning Dual layer dvds. It was the $1299 Core 2 Duo version 1 rev. ago. Got it in October. In the System Profiler it says DVD-Write: +R DL.
So, I stick a +R DL disk in there, and every time I go to write to it, the disc gets spit out and it says please insert a blank dvd. Now, you might think I'm inserting full DVD+r DL disks, however, that's impossible, because this is my only dvd writer I own and there is no way every disk in my pack came out of the box full of data.
Is there a brand that is guaranteed to work, does just my optical drive suck, or do all optical drives in macbooks suck and it's just a silly joke? I've seen quite a few threads claiming their dual layer writers don't work.

I'm also having difficulties burning DL discs. I'm using Toast Titanium 7.1.2 and I just got done with 30+ minutes of burn time only to receive an error stating "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR; Sense Code = 0x02; NO SEEK COMPLETE"
I've been trying to use Windata DVD+R DL discs and I've got a nice collection of coasters so far. Is this something I should use my AppleCare to try to address, or is this a media issue?
I have experienced the EXACT same problem using Memorex DVD+R DL discs (not my fave), so I do not believe this has anything to do with the brand of discs.

  • IDVD will not burn dual layer disc correctly.

I have an iMac9,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz with 8 gigs of ram, with a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S DVD-writable to -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW. It will not spit out a properly formated disc from IDVD. I get the "Supported disc not available" message, even though I have encoded it for dual layer in NTSC.
Has anyone ever experience problems with this? If so, what did you do to resolve it? I've burned through a half a dozen dual layer disc and these are still not supercheap.

Yes I called and my warranty was up so the nerd on the other end tried to sell me the applecare protection program. I guess my next step is to go to an apple store, but as the person that replied last in that discussion said time is an issue. I guess my biggest problem with this whole thing is that it is obviously the update that messed up all of these superdrives, so warranty shouldn't be an issue. Apple even removed the download link: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070716082804520&query=superdrive

  • Won't burn dual layer DVD

I have a simple iDVD project: a little over 2 hour iMovie segment with six chapters; a 5 minute iMovie; 9 slideshows (constructed in iDVD) of 99 photos each or less; and a few motion menus. Because of the size, I have to go with DVD+R DL media. I have had good results with Memorex, and I need to make several copies of this DVD, so I bought a spindle of their discs.
iDVD seems like it's running fine, goes through all the steps on the progress window, then spits out the DVD. But the window says "Current step... Done" with only a "Cancel" button. Hitting "Cancel" changes the window to "Cleaning up... Done" but nothing happens. The orange and black burn icon spins slowly like it's thinking and Activity Monitor shows minimal CPU (less than 2%) but doesn't say it's hung. Yet I have to force quit iDVD to do anything else with it.
Meanwhile, the disc it spit out does not work in any of three different DVD players I have. The disc doesn't even look like it has been burned at all. When I put the disc back in the computer, the Finder tells me it's a blank disc.
After doing this twice, I made a disk image in iDVD instead just to see what would happen. I burned the image to a DVD+R DL with Disk Utility, and it burned successfully, but the audio and video are all out of sync.
I bought some Verbatim discs, thinking it was a Memorex problem, but got the exact same results. I literally have hundreds of people expecting to see these DVDs. I would give up and just do a two-disc set, but the main feature by itself is too long for a single layer disc. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to get this project done?
    Intel iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

So obviously iDVD altered something on the disc.
Nope. I don't agree. iDVD6 didn't touch anything on the disc yet. It simply set down a pattern in temp files to write to said disc. Nevertheless, from reading both the above comments / posts, I honestly have no idea what the problem is but here's what I'd try:
Do Not use Memorex DVD's at all. In all fairness, it will work most of the time, however issues abound on this forum with this particular media when in some cases it simply fails. Nor is this my first choice for medias. In other words, you already have 2 strikes against you even before you start if one opts to use this particular brand.
Start by Deleting the encoded assets and insert verbatim DVD-R DL media instead.
Make sure to address the proper DL preferences within iDVD6 You have to tell the app you are using this newer media since it won't second guess what you are trying to do.
Use only Verbatim DVD-R DL (and no, they don't pay me to say this). I only use it because I already know it will work 99.9% of the time.
Test that disc image after completion using apple's DVD Player app. and not the iDVD's preview.
Burn from the disc image at 4x or slower using Roxio Toast as opposed to apple's DU. (the latter also works most the time but may have issues with changes or shifts to the second layer in which the video may pause or freeze shortly at said transition point.
Lastly, make sure your source video footage is 16 bit audio and not 12 bit. The latter produces DVD's that typically are out of sync.
Hope this helps and good luck to you.

  • Please help! why is the DVD burner not burning dual layer media in my G5?

I have tried, unsuccessully, to burn dual layer DVD's on my G5 using the latest iDVD software (iLife '08) but to no avail. I switch to dual layer in iDVD but invaribly, I always get a multiplexing error at the end of the burn. Any suggestions?
    Rick

Are there any plans to update OS 10.4.11 to include a firmware update for the DVD drive? Or has it already been changed in Leopard?
Depending on what model of Superdrive you have, there may be a firmware update from the manufacturer, just not from Apple. Updating to the latest firmware from the manufacturer often provides for better media compatibility, faster burn speeds, and sometimes even features that were disabled by Apple's version of the firmware.
DVD-R DL discs have one major drawback if you're using them to burn video DVDs - you have no control over where the layer break is placed. The first layer must always be filled completely before any data is written to the second layer. DVD+R DL does not have this limitation. You can place the layer break anywhere you like, just as long as the first layer is more full than the second.

  • Can my iMac 20 inch burn dual-layer DVD ?

    Hi,
I bought my iMac 20" last year. It is running Mac OS X Tiger. My question is can i burn Dual layer DVD with my iMac ? How can I do it ? Is there a software to burn DL DVD ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Have a look on here to find your iMac:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
It probably supports DVD +R DL, which the Finder should be able to use for burning without any changes. As for other applications such as iDVD I'm not sure though.

  • What is the best software to burn dual layer DVDs?

I was reading posts on a video forum and a number of the posts indicated that they had difficulty with burning software other than imgburn. However it does not run on a mac. I have used Toast for my burning. But I suspect I'll have to upgrade from Toast 7 to a newer version to burn dual layer. Another virtually universal comment was to only use Verbatum media. Should I look at another program?

Allthough Apple has dropped support of iDVD it still works with all system versions up to Mt Lion.  So if you still have it it's the best option available.  There is just no other video DVD authoring applicaiton for the Mac that is as versitile, easy to use and producing such professional looking disks.
If you don't have iDVD on your Mac you can get it by purchasing an iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com.
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Firmware upgrade for Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E to burn dual layer DVD?

    Dear All
I have a PowerBookG4 with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E which it seems apple has disabled from burning dual layer DVD. I've read around that there are firware upgrades that can enable actions again. I can't find any for Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E, though. Any ideas?
    Thank you!
    Angie
    PowerBookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    angie1976 you have me directly.
As stated in previous posts there have been several issues with the Matshita Optical drives that Apple has installed in there computers. Over time the problem has been discussed and it would appear that there are several things that come into play here.
Apple has made it so that many of the drives they intall are in fact not capable of there full potential.
It in fact boils down to an issue of Copywrite Infringment. Apple doesn't want to put itself in a position to be open to Lawsuits from the Motion Picture Industry.
Many of the drives that do not work up to there full potential have FIRMWARE updates that are offered by the manufacture to remedy this problem and some do not.
It has also been found that the casual user that burns DVD's isn't aware of the huige difference in the Format's available for DVD Burning. and the many limitations of these different drives as far as Media and Speed of Media is concerned. Many of the DL burners that were installed will not burn DL. Apple has had such a huge amount of dissatisfied customers that many that will take the time and if they still have AppleCare these drives will be replaced free of charge.
Here are a collection of links that will help you to understand the problem as it exists.
I will also say that upwards of 85% of the problems user expieriance is with POOR QUALITY MEDIA.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
I also noticed that some others have chimed in as to the fact that Media was not the issue. This is not entirely true.
Here is another post that I answered that will also cover this subject that may help you understand the problem a little better.
Let me see if I can shed some light on this issue, for you.
Maybe some others as well can.
There are several Applications that are standard programs that come with OSX.
Of these, several have the ability to burn a project.
    iTunes....iMovie.....Disk Utility.
Each of the above mentioned applications were developed for a specific purpose. However, they are capable of doing more than the original developers intended.
The problem in my eyes is the lack of information for a new user to Mac.
In what one would consider the perfect world, you simply choose a project, drag it in to one or more of the applications mentioned above and simply click burn and you are finished.
This is not always the case.
Often users are left with the issue of no clear cut direction on how to use these different burning softwares, and the ability to have a clear cut step by step user interface.
All of the furnished OSX burning software is in fact usable and works well.
The problem is HOW TO USE THEM.
The more experienced users find this either to be a non issue or will take the time to work with these different applications until they figure out how to use them.
There are of course different Advertisements and FAQ's that cover these to some degree that leave users more confused than when they started.
One of the major issues that accompany this problem is this.
Not all Burners that Apple uses in there machines are the same.
Not all Burners will accept all the different Media's that are available on the market.
Thus leaving many users confused. Not having a clear cut understanding of what the difference is between these different Media's and there use.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd.htm
The above link offers an overview of this subject.
Apple has found itself in a delima with the Motion Picture Industry, as well as The Music Industry over the issue of offering there users with the capability of copying Copyrighted material. Thus leaving them open for Law Suits.
There was an in-depth article in one of the recent issues of Macworld Magazine, that went in-depth covering this issue.
It is almost impossible to cover all aspects of this issue on these forums.
There are of course different softwares available that make the burning experience much easier and user friendly.
Roxio is one of the industry leaders in the development of Mac compatible Burning Software. They offer 2 of the industry leaders in this area.
    Toast-7 and Popcorn.
This solves only one portion of the problem. Both of these software offering give the user the ability to copy about anything.
However, there is so much controversy over the issue of Movie and Music copying, the manufactures of the Computers, and the Burners try to limit the users ability to copy these, and thus be clear of any Legal Issue.
Here again rises the problem of computer users being mad because the industry has placed limitations on there ability to use there product in a fast easy to use method.
Again there are work around to all of these issues.
The problem then becomes who out there is willing to tell us what is the easiest most trouble free method of using these computers, burners, software, and media.
The burner manufactures offer there burners.
To get them to work to there full potential the users then must search out the 3rd party Firmware updates that will enable them to work properly. This is not an issue with all burners but quite a few.
Most readers on these forums have read about the MEDIA compatibility and poor quality issues these are covered in a prior link.
To sum this up, the resources are available to do just about anything one wants to do in the copy area.
Not every copy problem is the same because of all the different elements that come into the equation, Burner, Media, Software, Firmware.
So if a user has a problem and needs the information and the resources to copy there projects whatever they may be.
Be through, give as much information as you can.
Keep it simple, No need for the use of exotic terms that most people don't understand anyway.
In-depth. Tell all aspects of the issue and what you have what you are using and what you want to accomplish.
If there is an answer out there.
    Someone will Chime in.
The users on these forums for the most part are more than willing to share in there knowledge, free of charge.
    One last thing,
When a user gives you an answer for you problem, for the most part they believe it to be a fact. Sometimes this isn't the case, we have all been guilty of, this is not done with malicious intent. It is done trying to help.
I personally have been misinformed, or tried a fix, that will work in one instance but not another. So tell all you can about your problem.
    Cheers Don

  • Burn Dual layer DVD+R 8.5 GB on OSx 10.5.8----Possible?

I have 5.6GB of photos I want to burn to a DVD.  I bought memorex dual layer DVD+R 8.5 GB today. Burning failed. I have OSx 10.5.8. Can my computer burn a dual layer DVD?  How do I do it?

Would it be possible to buy and external dvd drive that would have the capability to burn dual layer?
    Yes.
I know they have cd/dvd drives for the macbook air. But I'm wondering if I could buy it, hook it up, and it work with idvd.
That model of drive will only work on a MacBook Air. You need a third-party model; iDVD 6 and newer can burn to external drives.

  • Question about burning dual layer DVD's

I've owned a 2012 iMAC for a few weeks, having owned a 2007 iMAC until it stopped working. For the 2007 iMAC it was able to burn CD-R,CD-RW,DVD-R,DVD+R, DVD-RW,DVD+RW and DVD+R/DL. I never tried recording DVD-R/DL on that iMAC, since it was implied(in the list of useable blank media) that DVD-R/DL couldn't be used.
With my new 2012 iMAC,it seems that the situation is that DVD+R/DL can be used to burn "Burn Folders" of data, but can't be used to burn video material, and that if I want to burn video material requiring a dual layer disc, it should be DVD-R/DL. (maybe that is for the best, because DVD-R/DL has compatability with more non-computer DVD players than DVD+R/DL)
Does that sound correct to you? I guess I'll go out and buy a spindle of DVD-R/DL discs.

I burn dual layer DVDs all the time using iMovie 06 and iDVD 11 (on a Mac Pro).
I have since switched back to Snow Leopard. However, I found the above software to work perfectly with Lion.

  • Trouble burning dual layer dvd's with my superdirve

Hello, my question is regarding burning dual layer dvd's on my macbook pro. After finishing up a 5.6 GB movie in DVDSP4, i exported as an image (burned it as a .img) and then opened it up in disk utility for burning. Upon execution, i received an error message that said " the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I then tried burning the .img via DVDSP4 as well as the standard drag to disk on my desktop, all with the same luck. When trying the standard drag, drop and burn method (burn folder on my desktop), i received the error code 0X80020022.
After having no luck, i tested my super drive with standard CD's and single layer DVD's which it burned to just fine. I then tried switching media from memorex dvd dl +r's to sony dl + r's, but unfortunately it just refuses to burn to dual layer.
Any ideas as to what might be the problem?
    Thanks.

I just got a set of Verbatim DVD+R DL 8X disks (4X sets of 15 each) at an amazing price of $27.99 each and i have just burned 8 movies with an average burn time of 12 minutes each (and then i verified them for an additional 30 minutes each) using Toast Titanium 7... i have a stock Pioneer 111D and it is yet to put out a coaster (over 8 months)... i have not yet tried to burn a DVD-R or a DVD-R DL... i am happy with what wurks for me...
BTW my previous burn times on the 2.4X averaged around 30-35min each + verified of 30+min also... with the same drive...
also the amazing price on the Verbatim DVD+R DL was @ Best Buy store special (Santa Rosa, CA), not advertised...

  • Can powermac g5 burn dual layer?

    Hi guys,
can powermac g5 burn dual layer dvds? I think mine is superdrive. It was on the top of the range when I bought it, before the intel chips came out.
    thanks for the help
    Jack

Post the information that's contained in the "Disc Burning" section of System Profiler. That will tell us what drive you have. In any event, if Apple supports DL burning with that drive, you should see "+R DL" or something like that in the list of supported formats.
I can't tell which G5 you have from your signature, so this is the best I can do for now. It's certainly not a dual-core PowerMac, as those couldn't run 10.3.9, as you have listed in your signature.
