IDVD won't burn DVD, previews fine

Hello,
I am trying to burn a fcp 5 project onto a dvd+r with idvd. the project previewed fine in the idvd, but when i put the dvd in, it says it can't read the dvd and that there's nothing in the drive. The dvds are brand new and have never been used. I burn cd in itunes fine, any suggestions?

Idvd won't burn DVD of iphoto slideshow

Using iphoto 5.0.4 I've created a slide show, added music etc. It all works wonderfully in iphoto until I try to "send to idvd". (idvd 5.0.1) The idvd dialogue box indicates that it is exporting and everything seems in order until I plink the "burn" button in the box that appears when export has completed. Things whir for a while then I get an error message about burn failed. The rest of the error message varies from time to time but is usually something about menu. It sometimes ejects the partially burned disk, othertimes I have to shutdown and/or restart to get the disc to eject. I did get one satisfactory burn out of 11 attempts (I'm persistent). I'm using TDK DVD+R 1-16x disks.
Just putting the jpeg photos onto a disc works fine but its snafu time trying to burn a slideshow

Do I have a software or hardware problem? Is there a good way to reliably burn DVD's of slideshows.
On the one burn that worked, when played back, the pictures are not at all sharp or clear yet the original photos in iphoto and iphoto's slideshow are quite crisp. Is this just what I can expect from a burned DVD or are the burned slideshow photos supposed to be crisp?

In terms of workflow, I prefer to Share/Export my slideshows from iPhoto to full-quality Quicktime movies. You can double-check the resulting movie before dragging it onto the iDVD menu area (not into a drop zone).
For burning, you'll reduce errors by using slow burn speeds and high quality discs. Verbatim is often recommended around here; I also like Sony. DVD-R are the most compatible with players, but perhaps this isn't a dramatic difference compared to DVD+R. To better control burn speeds, first create a disc image (Save as Disc Image) and then copy the disc image to your DVD (use Roxio Toast or Apple's Disk Utility).
There are a variety of other tips to improve the consistency of burns, so write back if you still have troubles.

Using IDVD 5. and Sony-R DVD's. Trying to burn slide show imported from IPHOTO, and graphics imported from IMOVIE, and get an error #1 or multiplexing problem.

Man, you're about the millionth person to post an error #1. Search the group for possible solution(s).
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...

This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Disk Utility to burn the DVD.
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (not the .img, the one below) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. Your SuperDrive tray will open. Insert a recordable DVD. (DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Then click the Burn button.

IDVD won't burn DVD, keeps showing up with "You Inserted a blank DVD..."

I keep getting the error during the encoding process for burning. The prompt shows up as if i just inserted a new blank DVD, and gives me an encoding video error.
Does anyone know how to prevent this?

You can set preferences within apps like roxio toast to automatically launch when Blank dvd media is inserted into your mac / burner. And if this is the case then you may need to address these preferences so they don't overtake iDvd from the start.
Check your preferences for burning a dvd as to which app/s you have selected to perform this function. Perhaps you have another app other than iDvd selected.

IDVD won't burn since latest update

Ever since the latest update iDVD won't burn a disc. It says that there is no disc in the drive. I have tried TDK DVD-R and Verbatim DVD-R discs. This is ******* me off something fierce. Please help.

Have you tried to burn a data DVD from the finder?
What does System Profiler (about this mac > more info) say under diskburning?
Also a cold restart (all power off for 5 minutes) and zapping the PRAM and PMU can reset optical drives.

IDVD 2.1 won't burn DVD's on System OS X 10.4.3

I recently upgraded from 10.2 to 10.4.3. Now I am unable to burn DCVD's with iDVD 2.1. IT JUST WON'T BURN. There is nothing on the disk or it gives me an error message at the end of the burning process or quits unexpectedly. There seems to be a compatability problem. Can anyone tell me what is happening?

You're not alone! I can't get iDVD 4.01 to burn on OS 10.4.3, but it will burn on my second H.D. on 10.3.9????
If I want iLife bugs with no help from AppleCare I get buy a PC and save some bucks! I've been a loyal user from the beginning , but if Apple is going to start abandoning its software and leave it with bugs to quickly push out upgrades with more bugs I may have to re-evalute my purchases!
Are they ever going to fix the bugs in iMovie 4.01 or just go on to iMovie 5, 6 and 7! Sometimes I'd trade the the new "toys" put into the upgrades for reliability.

Is there any hope of using iDVD 7 to burn DVDs (Leopard 10.6.6, Mac Mini)?

I've tried many of the suggestions in these discussions, short of reinstalling iDVD or wiping the hard drive and reinstalling OSX 10.6.6, and doing that seems excessive simply to use included Apple software. I have more than 260GB available on my hard drive, no external drives open (there are some connected both by FW and USB, but they are not even turned on, just connected to ports).
iDVD 7.1.1 won't even get past the menu before it fails and gives an error that the 'burn cannot be completed'. There are no 'extras' in the menu, simply ONE QT/iMovie/iDVD compliant 15-second video; no drop zones, no fancy anything, default text for the video 'button', no hyphens or special characters, simply one video from my camera and the application can't get past the menu.
Should I just go back to burning dvds from my powerbook G4 (tibook) through s-video to a dvd/vhs recorder?

Hi, and thanks for the quick response. Yes, I have deleted the iDVD preferences about a dozen times. I started out my first project with a positive attitude and set up to burn 4 videos (all non-copyrighted, from my own cameras and library), and decided to fill in some time with slide shows from pictures on the hard drive (not in iPhoto, but they showed up in the iDVD media area and tested fine following the iDVD 'how to' pdf.)
I had added audio (to the slides), but it was from an external 40-gb firewire drive, and one of the slide shows was from pics stored there.
I removed those externally-hosted files first, after trying several times to delete the plist file with no better results. Then I removed that hard drive from the picture and turned it off, so no external source files are in play.
I removed slide shows entirely from the media list after just removing them from the project and menu seemed to have no affect, partly since the error message mentions the 'menu/slideshows' in it's (boilerplate?) dialog box.
Tried 'burning a disc image' after each modification (reduction of number and length of files) to the project, based on recommendations here.
With each successive error (none of which got past the menu building phase) I removed another video file; deleted the menus entirely and tried 'new' menus, until I decided to remove all videos from the project and try just that one short 15-second video shot last week for posting on a web forum (it was not one of the original videos I hoped to use).
I shut off all 'drop zones' from the menus. I used the default fonts and text buttons that appear when you drag a file from the media list into the menu window.
I even tried rebooting the computer to clear any latent memory that might be causing a problem (as a 'shot in the dark'). After every change, I quit the project and iDVD and deleted the plist, then restarted iDVD and tried again. All to no avail.
I'm on a budget, that's why I downgraded from my old iMac G5 when it died and switched to the Mac Mini aluminum 4,1, and I'm not looking to upgrade my now useless Toast 5xx to a compatible Toast 10 (even if that might work).
To recap:
I started out full-bore with video and photos and music (latter two for slide shows);
After confirming everything worked together and there were no errors showing in the map view, and running through the slides and video files several times to make sure they 'worked', I tried to burn the disc (no disc image at this point, just a confident full-blown burn). Got the error in the menu phase.
Started reading the discussions forum (this place) for a couple hours looking at what problems others were having, and trying the suggestions posed therein. No luck.
Then decided to try deleting preference plist and creating a 'disc image' on the desktop of the entire original project. No luck.
Then multiple incremental changes to the original project until I was left with the single movie file to see if any of my original media files might be the problem. (I even made sure there were no special characters in the titles, menu buttons, etc of any of those files, as someone mentioned the menus don't like any 'special characters'.)
So, here we are. I am wondering if maybe the Mini is just not powerful enough to handle burning dvds? (It seems like it isn't platform based, since iDVD doesn't even get through the menu phase). This Mac Mini is about 1 month old.

Both Superdrives won't burn DVDs or CDs

Hello everyone. I'm having a serious problem. Both of the Superdrives in my MacPro (1.1) will not burn DVDs or CDs. They read discs just fine. They just won't burn -- in ANY program (DVD Studio Pro, Finder, iDVD).
I have scoured the forums to answers to this problem, and NOTHING has worked. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
Here is a list of things I've tried:
Disc cleaner
Reducing burning speed
Different DVD media. I've tried every brand and speed out there. Verbatim, Memorex, Sony, generics, etc.
Re-install operation system. The issue started on Leopard. A reinstall didn't help. I'm not on Snow Leopard and having the same problem.
Checked connections. (all plugs are snug)
Some thoughts:
I find it hard to believe that this is a case of bad superdrives. They both stopped working at the same time.
I have an external firewire burner that works just fine.

Open System Preferences.
Click on "International"
Under "Languages": Drag any of the other languages to the top,
then drag English back to the top.
Set "Order for sorted lists" to English
Set "Word Break" to English (United States, computer)
Close System Preferences
Restart computer
What you can try is typing the exact phrase of the error message into google... in parentheses, and you will find a lot of hits, and maybe the answer. Good luck!
PS... I know the "fix" above sounds like nonsense, and it might be, but several claimed it worked...

Won't burn DVDs, rejecting various DVDs, what to do?

Hi all, I've had my MBP for about a year and a half now, and as of late it's not let me burn DVDs, quite some time ago, and also rejects various DVDs (brand new ones, no scratches on some not copies, genuine DVDs) and I don't know why.
I do have an extended warranty of 3 years, what do I do?

Since I just burned half a dozen single and dual layer DVDs this week and I'm up to date with updates, I think we can scratch that idea. Though if the update didn't quite take on your computer...If you updated via the software updater you can always download the combo updater and apply it again.
Media can be an issue - I have DVDs that my old MacBook burned just fine but my MBP won't. (Different drive manufacturers.) Dirt and dust can also be an issue. I'm not a big fan of optical drive cleaners but if you are out of warranty it is worth a try - for that matter if you are still in warranty it is worth a try. The next step would be a call to Apple.

Suddenly iDVD won't burn a disk

I use iDVD a lot. I'm a pro photographer and I love it for showing off work to clients.
I have a disk that I definitely, absolutely ned to get out of the door today and for the first time ever I hav problems with it. The burn gets all the way to the end (about an hour or so) and I get an error that the burn has failed with errors. (It's -34506 - it's supposed to point to an Applescript error).
The disk is a slideshow from iPhoto + a folder of slideshows just created in iDVD. All of them preview correctly. I can burn other disks and if I drop the iPhoto slideshow then I can burn the disk (but I really need the iPhoto slideshow!).
So far I have tried:
switching to save image rather than a real burn
reducing quality (to best perfomance - this burns but the quality is terrible - I need best quality)
trashing the preference file
rebuilding the slideshow in iPhoto including reimporting all the pics
changing the theme
I have run software update a couple of times to bring everything up to date. iDVD is version 5.01.
Project duration is just over 28 minutes. Size is 0.8 GB. 5 tracks, 2 menus, 44 seconds of motion menus.
Plenty of free disk space (93 GB on boot drive, 500 GB on all drives - really).

Sorry - should have posted back that I worked round this a couple of hours ago.
I narrowed it down to one of 130 jpegs (or more than one - I just know there was something freaky in there). They were all edited files that originated on a D2X and were edited in Photoshop CS2 and all of them opened successfully in a bunch of applications.
Anyway I wrote a PS action that reduced the size of each a little and resaved it. This should make sure that every byte of the file was rewritten. Reimport to iPhoto and rebuild the slideshow. Export to iDVD and burn - and it worked!
Did a search on 34506 and it really looks to me that there is some kind of lurking bug deep in iLife - when an app finds a file it doesn't like it chokes the whole system. What's weird is that the crash isn't in an app that's processing the file directly. I rendered the jpegs into an avi with Fotomajico. This worked fine and the avi played beautifully but iDVD crashed when trying to burn it.
I guess one day there will be an iDVD update and this error will majically go away.....

OSX Lion: iDVD won't burn completely.

I use iDVD on Lion, and it's my first time using this software. I love it so far, except it won't burn. I've tried twice now to burn a DVD and it gets stuck on the same part each time. It is after hitting burn, it processes the content for an hour or so and the progress bar is completely full and it ejects the disk. It doesn't complete the burn though, it gets stuck on "Multiplexing and Burning...", the progress bar remains full, and the time remaining says "about one minute". It doesn't go anywhere from here, even if I push the disc back in.
What should I do?

I can't answer specifially to what your problem is, but I had the same problem. I tried many different kinds of DVD Rs from Radio Shack and nothing worked. Then I bought Apple's DVD -Rs and I it finally worked. I think it has something to do with the DVD R needing to work at various burn speeds. 1x 4x 8x etc. This should not be the case, Apple should explain why the burning is so finicky, but it di finally work for me.

IDVD won't burn

So iDVD refuses to burn the disc. Up until it tells us to insert a recordable DVD, everything is fine—then when we insert a recordable DVD, it takes it for a few seconds, then spits it back out without any kind of reason whatsoever. Help?

After You done the Disk Image.
Burn at a reduced speed - x1 or x4 (most recommended) to get as few write errors possibly.
In despair - this might occasional work on a Memorex - no guarantee though.

Hi. Can someone help me figure out how to make my idvd burn dual layerd movies? I've done everything the same as I always have and it still won't do it. Do I need to buy something other than Sony discs? I'm at my whits end. Any ideas out there?

Read the intro and the Mac OS X section. When you compose a post, you may add a screen shot by clicking the camera button and following the instructions.
Under the cricumstances, I think it's better to start a little further back.
Quit all apps and restart the Mac.
After you've logged back in, first check how much free disk space you have. In Finder, select your hard disk and choose File > Get Info. Look at the General section (if it's not expanded, click the disclosure triangle to the left of the word "General". Check the figure for "Available". If it's not al least 12GB, you need to clear up disk space. You should have at least 12GB free disk space to proceed. (This is not a carved-in-stone figure, but something that should keep you on the safe side. More is better; but there's no need to exaggerate.)
Next, let's check the drive. Press the Option (⌥) key and click the Apple () menu. The first item on the menu should be "System Profiler…" When System Profiler is up and running, under "Contents" you should see the line "Hardware". If it's not expanded, click the disclosure triangle to the left of the word "Hardware". A few lines down, you should see "Disk Burning". Click on it. You should get the details of your DVD drive. "Burn support" should say "Yes"; "DVD-Write" should say "-R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW". If all that is correct, quit System Profiler.
Next, start iDVD. If no project is available, it should show the opening dialogue.
Click on Magic iDVD. In the Magic window, type a short name for "DVD Title". Let's say, Test.
Drag your movie to the "Drop Movies Here" strip.
On the bottom right there are two buttons, "Create Project" and "Burn". Click the "Create Project" button. iDVD should generate and save the project. The Project window should appear.
Choose "Project Info…" from the Project menu. Check the choice for "DVD Type". It should be "Double-Layer (DL) - 7.7GB". If it isn't, make it so. Close the Project Info window.
Now choose File > Burn DVD… Make sure the DVD you insert is indeed a DL (it should be marked as such, and the label should say something like "8.5GB data").
If it fails as before, you should return to the project window. This time, choose File > Save as Disc Image… Save it to a convenient location.
Open Disk Utility. Choose Images > Burn…, select the image saved in the previous step, and try to burn it. If it works, then the problem is with iDVD. (Keep in mind that a DL disc burned with Disk Utility may not work or may cause problems in a DVD player. This is only a test to try to isolate the problem.)
If it doesn't work with Disk Utility either, then the problem is with the drive or the disc. Reset the SMC and try again.

If it still doesn't work, try a different brand of discs, from a different manufacturer (and preferably manufactured in a different country).
If several brands of discs fail, then the problem is likely with the drive. Get a lens cleaning disc and use it to clean the drive. If that still doesn't solve the problem, then it's probable that the drive is damaged and should be replaced. If the drive is old (4–5 years) the likelihood that it's damaged increases.

Suddenly iDVD won't burn my movie.

Today I tried to burn a copy of a movie I've made with a Memorex DVD-R, and it says the project is too large; that I have to insert a double layer DVD. The confusing part is I burned three DVDs of the project with the same type of disc yesterday and they all came out fine. Has anyone encountered a similar problem/does anyone know how to fix it?

Welcome to the forums.
One way to reduce the errors in burning DVDs is to use the Save As Disk Image option in iDVD. This separates the burning process into two steps and also makes it easier to burn copies. Even at this stage, you may wish to use Disk Utility to make a disk image and see if that makes more consistent copies.

External Drive won't burn DVD's

I have a Sony external DVD/CD burner attached to my G4 it is capable of burning all formats of DVD and CD. The System Profiler recognises it and tells me all the formats it will burn.
However when I put a blank DVD-R in to burn a disc image, it won't burn and it tells me it can't burn to this disc and to insert recordable media.
It's not the DVD's as they burn with no problems in my other G4, either disc image, iDVD, Toast etc though this one has a superdive.
Any thoughts on this?

What interface are you using to connect it?
That error code in Tiger is often related to the Finder, relaunching the Finder can fix it. In Panther though, I don't know if the same is true, can't hurt to try, however.
If you just purchased it, I would strongly recommend returning it for a drive from a vendor with a higher standard of Mac-support, such as LaCie, or a vendor such as OWC, that sells a variety of cased-drives.
