IDVD won't open projects

I was having some issues getting iDVD to start but I fixed that. Now after I select the project in the home menu, the project never opens. It just stops. I end up having to force quit iDVD and keep going through the same cycle. Any help would be great!

Did you repair permissions? Also .... :

  • IDVD won't open

    Hello, all.
    I need help again,please.
I did something here that somehow screwed up Idvd. I went to Get Info of Quicktime player, Flip4mac and Idvd and changed
Ownership & permissions to "read and write". Why?? 'cause I thought that It would solve a few minor issues I had with Quicktime and I felt too confident; I kept going!.
On iDVD get info I did the following:
Ownership & permissions I clicked "read & write
Under Details: Owner I clicked on muy "home" folder name and I don't remember what was there before to click it back on.I do remember reading System under Owner but cannot remember where in the whole Get Info window.
On the right side of the "owner" dropdown menu there is a locked lock; (unlocked doesn't work,I tried)
    Access: Read & write
    Under group: Faded "admin"
Access: I clicked "no access" And,
    Under Other: Read only.
Now, idvd won't open and the idvd icon turned to "application" icon. The ruler, pencil and brush in the shape of letter A. I shows like that on Finder and in the dock. I installed again my iLife'5 package hoping that it would solve the idvd problem but it didn't. Everything works fine except idvd.
What can I do??? I wish I chopped off mi fingers instead of doing something that I wasn't sure about.
I appreciate any help I can get from you guys.
    Thank you.

You need to "Repair Permissions" to reset all Apple-Installed packages to their default settings. You can generally do this "live" in 10.3.9. Quit all Applications, launch Disk Utility, select your Boot drive and click "Repair Permissions" and after many scrolling messages and several minutes, all should be set right.
If you want to read about what it is doing, there is a pretty good explanation in this article:

  • Idvd won't open but opened this morning

I used idvd last night and this morning and it worked and burned fine. Now I need to burn a new DVD for a school project due tomorrow and it just won't open. I've restarted the computer several times. I haven't installed anything new since when it last worked. Can someone help me open idvd. Or is there any other software that will burn the video I just edited? Or should I reinstall idvd?
i'm using a macbook pro that's only 2 months old.
    Thank you

Do you own roxio toast? That will work also.
Or if you simply wish to make a copy of an exiting iDVD then you can use apple's disc utilities to do this as well. What is it exactly you are trying to accomplish? And how much Hard Drive space is remaining on your main HD. If it's less than 20GB, then start making some more room on the drive.
Also, please search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
Hope this is Helpful & Solves the problem but if not just come on back.

  • IMovie won't open projects

iMovie 11 won't open any of my projects ...I can see the projects in finder, but when I click open w/iMovie iMovie opens but does not open any projects and then crashes.    Help!

Got it.  Thanks.  Deleted teh plist file.  Seemed to help when I reopened imovie - listed all projects, but froze up again when I tried to open one.  Went back to Library/Preferences, but no new plist file created.  Should I try deleting the plist.lockfile file?  Each plist file seems to have a lockfile file.  Thanks again.

  • DVDSP3 Won't Make New Buttons, Won't Open Project Files

    HELP!!!!
The button editor in my DVDSP 3.02 stopped working after it opens a new project file. I mean, when you go to a menu and then hold down the mouse button and drag, nothing happens. It will not create any new buttons. Even if you drag a button template over and use the pop-up submenu. It will not create any buttons.
Worse is what happens when I open an existing project file. Then it stalls forever at the "Loading Menus" point in the "Loading Project" dialog. It doesn't crash, it just stalls there forever. However, if I click "cancel" - THEN the app crashes.
But it won't make buttons in the new project files it can open, and it won't open any existing project files. Very confusing.
Here's what I know and have done to this point...
If I watch this whole process in the Activity Monitor, here's what I see. I find that two apps named "DSPX_AEncoderServer" and "DSPX_EncoderServer" get hung (and turn red) when the "Loading menus" point is reached in the document load. Sometimes DVDSP will say it's hung, too, but not always.
However, I found that my DVDSP app still runs flawlessly if I boot from my "clone" backup drive, which is how I'm still able to get work done currently.
Back on my normal boot drive, all of the other Apple Pro apps still run perfectly - FCP, Compressor, A-Pack, etc. But not DVDSP.
OK, here's a clue, but I don't know what it means. Two months ago, I had the logic board replaced on my G4. All the pro apps made me re-register. Then this DVDSP problem appeared out of the blue. Nothing fixed it that I could find. What made it finally go away was the timely arrival of a new Security Update to the OS via "Software Update." Installing that made the problem with DVDSP go away, for good.
Not doing hard drive maintenance, repairing privleges, fully optimizing OS, Disk Warrrior, Norton DiskDoctor - none of them worked. But that Security Update showing up, installing, and then doing the post-install optimize fixed the problem. That time. Or maybe it didn't? Because...
Two weeks ago the FW ports on the "new" logic board blew, just like the original, so AppleCare gave me a third logic board.
Same deal as before with all the pro apps wanting to re-register because they are seeing a different serial number in firmware.
Also, just like before, I have this trouble with DVDSP. But I can't fix it this time.
In the past three days (two of which were really one "large" day with no sleep period in between) here's what I have done in an attempt to fix this, without success.
I dumped the receipts for the DVDSP v3 installs and upgrades, then I reinstalled the DVDSP components from my original disc, and then reinstalled the online 3.02 upgrade. No go.
I did all of the above, except this time I found an Apple TechNote on deinstalling DVDSP v2. So using that as a guide I did my best to delete the app and all its supporting files, as well as the install receipts, before doing a fresh install of the app and the v3.02 upgrade. No go.
I did a plethora of hard drive and system maintenance thinking that perhaps some files had been misplaced, a hard drive directory corrupted, a bundle bit here or there un-set, a few system libraries de-optimized, various font and system caches corrupted, as well as numerous log files too filled up with "essential" data to run correctly therefore in need of deletion.
Along with anything else I could think of based on my 20+ years of supporting Macs in a production environment. Again, no go.
So I deleted all the DVDSP files and receipts from my boot drive again. Then I dumped all the install receipts for OS 10.3.9 and ran the "combo" version installer for that OS upgrade. Next I dumped the receipts for the Security Updates and reinstalled those. Then I did drive maintenance, OS permission fixing and optimizing. Then reinstalled DVDSP and friends. Still no go.
But my version of the app that is on my backup hard drive that I cloned right before taking the Mac to the shop for the 3rd logic board still runs just fine. I boot off that drive (connected via Firewire) and DVDSP will run fine.
    I'm confused.
Now I'm not inclined to spend a lot more time on this since my DVDSP 4 upgrade is due for delivery any day now, and I'm sure that will work OK. Especially since I'm planning on moving to Tiger at that point, too.
But in the meantime, it sure would be nice to know what happened to my "regular" copy of DVDSP.
Can anyone figure this out, or at least give me some new ideas on now to troubleshoot this?
Apple Support refuses to help me because I'm still using an "unsupported" version of DVDSP. Even though I'm still using it because my purchased upgrade is being delivered via "media mail" - the US Postal Service's version of the proverbial "Slow Boat."
That was a difficult and frustrating conversation withthe Apple Support rep, too, let me tell you. I've been a fan, user, customer, supporter, and evangelist for Apple hardware and software since 1984. But when that voice on the other end of the phone essentially told me that...
    a) if I was not using the latest and greatest version of the software, AND...
    b) if I was not willing to spend several hundred dollars each year on support fees...
...then I was basically on my own and they would not help me. Worse, they didn't care that I was an old and loyal customer, or that I was even a stockholder in the company. The support system essentially told me to get stuffed. Yee-e-e-ow!!!!
I was especially mad about this because I have this nagging suspicion that this whole problem I'm having with DVDSP is somehow related to some kind of copy protection scheme that Apple has going on but doesn't talk about.
I mean why did I need to re-enter the serial numbers for all my pro apps when I changed logic boards? Is my problem being caused by some Pro App component that knows enough to stop working when it thinks it's been bootlegged, but doesn't know enough to trigger a re-registration of itself.
At this point, that idea is beginning to sound more and more plausible as the cause of my trouble.
Anyway, this problem is seriously hurting my workflow. I'm out of ideas and I need some guidance from the collected wisdom of the forum to solve this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

I didn't see anywhere that you had downloaded and
installed the latest proApplication Support file. If
you haven't, you should do this next:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/proapplications
    upport31macosx1039.html
    Hal:
I had reinstalled that ProApps Support version, but I hadn't done it since I deleted all the app files and such, then done a complete reinstall from the DVD.
So I just downloaded it afresh, and then installed it. Then I restarted, and then repaired permissions with Disk Utility.
    Still no go.
I'm bamboozled. I thought I knew something about this stuff, but I guess it's good to stay humble.
However, my 5.1 studio upgrade just arrived in today's mail. I think I'm going to take a chance. I'm between projects right now. So I'm going to upgrade my OS to Tiger>then 10.4.6 upd. Then I'll take a shot at installing the new FCP Studio upgrade and see what happens.
Any comments or advice? Otherwise, wish me luck. I'll let you know how this works out with a post here.
Sure wish I could figure out what's going on with my DVDSP v3, though. I really HATE to leave unresolved problems hanging out there. Seems like they always come back to bite you again if you don't deal with them.
    Thanks for the help.

If you like, you could send me a project file that won't open.  I'll check it on my system and we can eliminate the possibility that the project files have been corrupted.  Me email is in my profile.  Be sure and compress project file before attaching to email (control click on file and choose "compress."  this will create a zipped version of the file that's suitable for attachment.).

  • Final Cut won't open project, stops at 0% or 1% while reading project

Smaller projects will open, but all of a sudden this large project (with HVX-200 HD footage) which I've been editing for several months won't open. Final cut opens fine but when it starts to read the project, it never gets passed 2%, and I have to force quit. I am running the project off of two lacie 500GB drives. What should I do?

Duplicate the project on the Desktop and try opening that.
Try opening your last autosave - resave and try working off of that.

  • IDVD won't open with OS 10.5.8 -can't record on to blank DVD discs

When I attempt to open iDVD application, message says it won't open with this OS. Also when I insert a blank DVD (Verbatim) disc am unable to record a film on to it as I get this message: "The disc can't be burned because the device failed to calibrate the laser power for this level of media." I've seen this message on a previous post on this forum but could not see any solution posted. I have recorded onto DVD discs in the past (different make of disc and before I upgraded to Leopard).
I can record on to blank CD audio discs without any problem however.

The first thing to try (IMO important) is not to import directly from your camera. Get a Firewire-connected card reader (USB works also but is slow on Macs) and use the Mac's Finder to copy images from the card to a folder on the Mac hard drive. My description below describes a CF card, but the workflow is the same for an SD card or whatever.
I feel pretty strongly that camera-to-Aperture handling of original images puts originals at unnecessary risk. I suggest this workflow, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:
    • Remove the CF card from the camera and insert it into a CF card reader. Faster readers and faster cards are preferable, and Firewire is much preferable to USB2.
    • Finder-copy images from CF to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
    • Eject CF.
    • Burn DVD copies of the original images (optional backup step).
    • Eject DVDs (optional backup step).
    • From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location."
    • Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing).
    • Reformat CF in camera, and archive DVDs of originals off site.
Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media.
Good luck! The camera-to-Aperture workflow may or may not be the cause of your specific problem this time but in any event card-to-finder long term will provide a more solid workflow.

  • Edge Animate 2014.1 won't open project because of js error

After upgrading to the latest version yesterday, one of my projects won't open in 2014.1 because of a js error ("Loading Failed, please check your page for JavaScript errors").
I redownloaded the previous version and can confirm it works in 2014. Prior discussions concerning this issue have been no help and I don't understand why the latest version has issues opening this project.

I started from an old file and continued in AE2014.1
It did resolve the issue... But I've had it happen at least three times already to other files. I always had to restart.. But, of course when a project is almost finished and this happens, I'm loosing hair here!
    Absolutely frustrating.
    *vent over*
so, thank you for helping me here, but it's very bad that something like this is happening.

  • IDVD won't open any more?!

    Hi there,
My mac has stopped opening iDVD. It opens and the dock icons jumps as per usual and I am presented with the splash screen. From there, if I open a project or create a new one, the program either freezes and I have to force quit it or it just closes all together without any warning. I can create a new Magic iDVD however, when I click on "Create Project", the same happens as above.
My mac has 2 hard drives in it, one of which I recently changed. Originally I had a 200GB HD however I have recently changed it to a 40GB HD. The 200GB drive had nothing on it at all and so I am fairly sure that hasn't had anything to do with iDVD not working. Since then however, I have filled up the 40GB drive and so I am wondering if it could be due to a lack of memory that iDVD isn't opening. (I could however be totally wrong as I don't know if iDVD would use the second drive at all.)
My question is could the lack of memory be responsible for the program not opening and if not, is there anything else I could try?
    Thanks

Since then however, I have filled up the 40GB drive and so I am wondering if it could be due to a lack of memory that iDVD isn't opening.
You got it. iDvd needs working room on the boot volume (your main HD). I recommend 20-25 GB and above.
You could do what I have done in the past and take that 200 GB and use CCC or SuperDuper to clone the 40 GB to the 200 GB. Once you know it's fully operational and you can successfully boot to the newly created mac volume, then reformat and use the 40 GB as a scratch disc for iMovie or other apps like FCP, DVDSP, etc.
Hope this solves the issue but if not just come on back ....

  • Motion 5 crash and won't open projects

Was working on a project when Motion crashed.  Now that project won't open.  I started a new project and it did the same thing. When starting, Motion does ask about restoring windows when booting. Happens on another computer as well.  Any help?

Be sure you have the latest updates to Motion, the OS, and all your other apps via Software Update and the App Store.
Run Disk Utility to "repair" all hard drives.
Be sure all hard drives have at least 15% of the total capacity as free space.
Get the free "Preference Manager" app from Digital Rebellion (dot com) to trash Motion pref files properly an safely.
At worst, get the free "Final Cut Remover" app from Digital Rebellion to totally uninstall Motion, re-boot, then re-install from the App store.

  • IDVD won't open fully

I've been using IDVD 6 fine recently, never had any trouble. Even burned a few DVD's yesterday with it.
Today I started editing a new project in final cut express, the project was in HDV so I moved a load of stuff off my hard drive to an external hard drive to free up space.
Edited the video fine now I come to open IDVD to put the finished thing onto a DVD and IDVD starts to open, the icon jumps up and down, the 'loading themes' box comes up, the IDVD menu at the top is there, but there is no other box open, just a plain desktop, I right click on the IDVD icon and it says 'not responding'.
The only thing I've changed is I moved some final cut documents to an external hard drive.
Any ideas on whats gone wrong please?

The harddrive was last used on a PC.
However, All I've done is move final cut folders to
it, I havent saved any new work dirctly to it or
moved anything from it to the internal drive. The
project I've just done is all on the the internal
    hardrive.
    IDVD just wont open properly.
You can NOT safely use a PC formated external hard drive with OS X. Doing so will lead to unpredictable (and usually bad) results. Perhaps you put something of importance to iDVD on the external drive.

  • IDVD won't open after trying to open a project that had missing links

I hope I can explain this correctly.
I created a DVD using iDVD last week, it had many short movies on it in different menus plus some photos in the menu areas. After I created the DVD & burned it, I moved the videos (plus a ton of other clips from the same year) to an external HD, as they were taking up tons of space on my hard drive.
Today I opened iDVD hoping to create a 2nd DVD project for a different year of clips. I had started to set up this DVD a few days back & saved it. When I clicked "open existing project", I found the projects but mistakenly clicked on the one that I had already burned. It acknowledged that it couldn't find the videos (since they're on an external HD that was not hooked up) and showed them all as broken links. Fine.
I tried to open the correct project, at which point iDVD froze & I had to force quit.
Since then, every time I try to open iDVD from Applications, I get a window asking where to look for the photos from the original one I opened, not the usual "create new project/open existing project" window. If I hit cancel in this window, everything disappears but the iDVD icon remains in the dock, but I can't open anything or do anything with it & have to force quit. If I try to do "find file", it just starts to search. Either way the whole program freezes up & I can't do anything with it.
Also, the iDVD menu will be at the top of the screen during this but I can't click to open anything else.  As soon as I click elsewhere on the screen, the iDVD menu disappears, the icon is still on the dock, it won't do anything again & I have to force quit yet again(and get a message that iDVD quit while unresponsive).
I'm going to try shutting down & restarting but anyone know anything about this?
    Thanks.

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iDVD/s cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch iDVD and try again.
