IDVD5 freezes during disc image creation

iDVD(5.0.1) freezes at the "writing" stage of disc image creation.
Video is imported to iMovie. I then make a 58 minute movie which I move to iDVD.
After modifying the original iDVD file created by iMovie I "save as">new file name in another location on the hardisc.
I quit iDVD, delete the original iDVD file, delete the playlist, restart, repair permissions, restart a 2nd time and then start iDVD.
I open the 2nd iDVD file (the one I "saved as"), and then burn to disc image.
The program goes through the first 4 menus and gets stuck on the "writing lead-in" phase. By stuck, I mean there is no activity for over 5 hours and I get the colored circle going around and around. I have done this before with a shorter, ~35 minute, movie with no problem.
iDVD is set to "Best Quality".
Any thoughts?

Hello Laszlo:
Were you trying to make a disk image of just stills and no audio? (I quote Matti Haveri):
- Sometimes iMovie HD 5.0.2 projects with only still images fail to burn in iDVD 5.0.1
iDVD 5 sometimes has an error if it tries to encode an iMovie HD project consisting only of imported still images and no sound track.
For example: I can produce the error when trying to burn this simple project: Create a PAL-DV project with iMovie 5.0.2. Import two 2048x1536 JPEGs to it with Ken Burns turned off. Send the project to iDVD 5.0.1 and let iMovie render the stills when it prompts it. Then encode the project as a disk image. At the very end of the encoding process there is an alert "Encoding Video. Error during rendering/encoding:" and making the disk image fails.
The error can sometimes be prevented if a short video clip with audio is inserted to the beginning of the iMovie project. Sometimes this doesn't work and iDVD's error message at the end of the encoding is: "Errors were found during the burning process. The error #-1 was reported". (This applies to iMovie 5.0.1 and iDVD 5.0 -- I haven't seen this in later versions).

  • Possible Fix for Disc Image Creation Problems

I've noticed a number of posts describing problems similar to the one I had: with my first session with iDVD5, I tried creating an .img disc image (thanks to Apple, btw, for building that function in -- and for the new progress bars!), but it hung up all night long on the "Burn" task, and I had to force quit, leaving me with no image at all.
I used disk image burning exclusively in iDVD4, because it allowed me to preview the result before committing it to a physical burn and prevented coaster-burning if something went wrong. I had had buffer problems when burning directly from iDVD -- but never with Disk Utility.
Of course, in iDVD4, you cannot just burn a disk image using the app. Most are aware that using "Hurz" and "Pfurz" (see posts under iDVD4) provided a great workaround, however, and that's what I used.
Well, it occurred to me that perhaps Hurz and Pfurz -- which basically interfered with iDVD4 to the user's advantage -- ought NOT to be in play with iDVD5. So I removed them from my user folder, et voila -- the very next time I tried the disk image function in iDVD5 (with the same project), it worked perfectly.
But I can only SUSPECT that this was the solution, unfortunately, because of the fact that an automated maintenance script had repaird my permissions in the meantime. The problem might have been permission troubles resulting from installation.
I do know this: removing Hurz and Pfurz and repairing the permissions worked for me. Hope it does for some others as well!

Thanks, Len. I kind of wish Apple would make a bigger deal of this. Repairing permissions fixes ALL KINDS OF THINGS! And it is a VERY good idea to do it regularly.
Like you, I do it once a week, using a wonderful freeware utililty called Onyx (search MacWorld or Google for it), which has a number of advantages over Disk Utility.
In the first place, it will execute all the maintenance scripts as well. You might know that OSX has a number of scripts it runs in the background for maintenance, some daily, some weekly, and some monthly. But they are generally set to run late at night, which means you need to leave the computer ON and AWAKE. I don't do this as much as I should, so running Onyx ensures that these scripts get run. Since using Onyx, I have NEVER had a crash.
Secondly, I can schedule it to do all this automatically, which is great - because I'm getting old . . . and I forget things. . . .

  • Video freezes when burning disc image

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem when making a disc image? I created movie in imovie and saved it as a dv (which I do all the time). After creating an idvd menu, etc., I save it as a disc image. But when I test the movie in dvd player, it works for a while (in this case about 8 min) and then the video freezes. I can still hear it though.
I did a few others a couple months ago and they were fine. This movie is 1 1/2 hours and another was 1/2 hr. and both froze about the same times.
I don't know if it's a system error that may just need idvd to be re-installed or something else.
If anyone has a solution to this, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your comment but the problem exists even BEFORE I burn it. I do the test from mounting the disc image and it's there. I think it's happening when idvd is encoding the movie for the disc image, but I don't know why.

  • 6.0.3 Error During Disc Initialization for both DVD+R and Disc Image - Help

I've been a mac user for a few years now, but I just bought a new MacBook, and my first superdrive! I'm all excited to test out the new hardware along with iDVD.
I've made a rather simple DVD setup and the first time through it was encoding for about an hour and then it gave an error message which I don't recall other than it mentioned QT7. I ran updater, no new updates that I needed and I tried again, and from then on I've been getting the Error During Disc Initialization message when burning to my DVD+Rs or when I try and save as a disc image (yes, I've deleted the encoding assets). I have about 20GB free on HDD, and I'm trying to burn approx. 100min of video. I've rebooted multiple times, and I've remade my project a couple times but no dice.
    Any idears?

    What hardware do you have???
You didn't answer Sue's question about free space on
your start-up drive. You should have 20GB+ free.
What are you sending to iDVD?
Verbatim DVD-R, not DVD+R, are very reliable, unlike
    TDK and Memorex.
    Also look here:

I am running on a 2.0 ghz MacBook with a SuperDrive using Sony DVD+R. I will definitely pick up some Verbatim DVD-Rs though to see if that makes iDVD happy.
I have cleared up some room and now I have around 50GB free.
I am trying to make a DVD of two seperate .mp4s of a soccer game. I have 3 pictures and two buttons.

  • Saving as Disc Image hangs/freezes and must force quit to exit

    Hi,
I've always been able to Save as Disc Image in order to make multiple copies. Now, it runs fine all the way until it gets to "Burn - Current Operation: Writing" where it freezes indefinitely. The beachball turns so I eventually have to force-quit.
I have tried going to the .plist file as suggested in this forum, restarting my computer, but it doesn't work. The film is 25 minutes long, so I've also tried both Best Quality and Best Performance, with encoding checked and without encoding checked.
I have also completely re-created the project from scratch after removing the .plist file, but it still hangs each time after "Processing Movies" is finished and right when "Burn" begins.
This does not happen when I burn the iDVD project directly to an inserted disc. Only when saving as disc image.
This never happened before... any suggestions out there?
    Thank you,
    Lisette

FYI, After you asked me how much free space my hard drive had, I freed up some space and had about 38 gb left and tried to burn disc as image again. This time it worked!
So I think you were on to something there, and that must have been the problem - not enough space on my hard drive.
    Thank you!!

  • Encore cs4 creates invalid disc image (iso file)

I have a video I edit in premiere cs4, exported an .mpg file that I import into encore to create a DVD. This works mostly fine (I have to delete the .xmp* file before importing to encore).
Today I edited the video, re-encoded the mpg file using quality 5 and 2 pass vbr, and added a slide show (about 6 photos) to the encore project. It also builds fine to a disc image (iso file). But when I try to burn the iso file using windows 7, it tells me the iso image is invalid. I tried imgburn and got an  error message like this:
    session 1 track 1 MODE1 .... 2054
    dvd format: MODE1 .... 2048
If I ask imgburn to continue it then says something about CSS and encryption, which I don't use, so I assume the iso file is too messed up.
I burned a DVD5 directly from encore, and it works in a dvd player.
Any idea why this invalid iso happens and whether there is a work-around?
Since cs4 is not the latest version, I assume there is no hope of bug fix?

There seem to be major problems in the disc creation process. I am struggling since several days now and I am not able to produce a working Blu-Ray Disk or iso image with Encore 5.5:
    - when producing Blu-Ray ISO images, you get an ISO that is recognized as DVD iso in all virtual drive programs. Therefore, you cann not burn them on a BD-R disc, also viewing them is not possible because it is a "DVD with blu-ray content".
    - when burning directly to disk, Encore does not close the sessing. This means, the Disk is not playable on all home Blue-Ray players. It was playable on my computer, but after closing the session manually the disc was a coaster.
    - when burning on a virtual burner (Virtual CD 10), the Blue-Ray plays ok on my computer, but I am NOT able to make a ISO image from this disk because some errors (unreadable blocks) on the disk are reported during creation and image creation stops.
    - from time to time (not reproduceable), Encore produces an additional AACS folder on the created Blu-Ray.
I am an experienced user and dont have any issues with other software solutions, but with Encore I was not able to get any usable results so far.

  • Save As Disc Image

I made a movie using iMovie5 and was unable to burn possibly there was a software glitch with iDVD5.
So I bought iLife6 and uploaded iMovie6 and iDVD6 only.
My movie's still on the hard drive and I'd like to proceed with iDVD6. I've read through several postings on these boards and know that I should Save As Disc Image before attempting a burn.
    Three questions:
    1. When I open iDVD6 one of the themes appears with an annoying ragtime music loop. Maybe I'll use the themes in the future, but right now I'd like to dispense with them. How can I turn the themes and the music loop off?
    2. Using iDVD6 I created a new project for my existing movie. I clicked the Media button and noticed that my movie project is visible in the lower pane under Movies. That is as I expected. I played the project and all appears well. I detected no hitches. I then dragged and dropped the project into the Map pane, that is, into a box that has these words "Drag content here to automatically play when the disc is inserted." Question: Am I taking the right steps?
    3. I then clicked iDVD>File>Save As Disc Image and got a drop down box saying "There were warnings during content validation. It is recommended to fix these problems before burning the project." What does that mean in plain English? There were no further indications as to the nature of the problems, so I don't know where they're located or what to fix. How do I proceed?
    using the
    ibook g4 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    1. Select an Old Theme that doesn't have music and animation.
    2. Yes. If you want it to loop endlessly, click on that file, go to Advanced/Loop.
    3. You probably selected a theme with drop zones that you haven't filled. An image should encode OK if that's the case. It did for me when I didn't want to fill those DZs.

  • IDVD freezing during burn process

I was trying to burn my DVD project onto a disc and iDVD kept freezing during the middle of it. It just so happened to always freeze during step 2 of the process, but Im not sure if that is just a coincidence or not. Any suggestions at how to get the program to burn my project without freezing up in the middle ?
    Thanks
    I am using iDVD 4

Thanks dispatx.com, that page was of immense help. I found much of it very encouraging simply knowing that someone has gone through the exact same thing, missing deadlines, sleep, etc.
I gathered as much info as I could and have successfully burned a DVD image now using the "Easter Egg" hurz & pfurz. Why doesn't apple include that in the program?
I cleaned up my powerbook prior to burning with OnyX. I trashed the iDVD preferences. I created a new project in iDVD using the same footage I had exported from FCP as QT movies, not self contained. I included songs I downloaded from the iTunes store (debunking the myth that the protected songs foul up the burning process). I held down ctrl and clicked burn, named the image, and then it went to work.
    Timeline:
6:00am started step 1, 10 secondes later, step 2 begins.
9:00 Step 3, Asset Encoding begins (Hallelujah, I never could get to this step)
    9:50 Step 4 begins, mulitplexing
10:20 Image is ready and iDVD is asking me to name the image again, I finally figured out this gives me the option of burning several copies, I did and it only took another 15 minutes to create another image instead of starting the whole process over again.
10:40 I drop it into disk utility and burn a 3.7 GB DVD in 20 minutes.
Oliver Luker accurately observes and records CPU usage at each of the steps so that helped me know NOT to cancel even when Activity monitor showed iDVD as not responding.
I went with best performance because too many people were reporting over 60 minutes and best quality as not working well, and I need this DVD done. I had an extras section in the DVD that I yanked. But I don't understand why we are limited to less than 60 minutes. This angers me a bit and I'm determined to find a way to have a good looking DVD with over 60 minutes of footage that will burn through iDVD. I don't want to buy DVDSP, yet.
    Good luck everyone.

  • Disc image too large

    Hi all,
new to fourm.it is a great service.my question is that i am having some problems with skipping/freezing dvd discs. a few have come back from clients, not very good!! i understand about burn speeds and discs. so i am trying to burn a disc image to dvd 1hr 48mins to a single layer disc but the saved file from idvd is too big 5.3G. I thought that a movie umder 2hrs would fit on a single disc. I have just used a simple idvd project.I can burn it direct to disc and it will do it.
Also can you delete the captured media once you have created a disc image?
    thanks all and best wishes
    g5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Andy
108 minutes is less than 120 minutes. Then You have to add the material You
put into the building of the DVD menu.
All included should be less than 120 minutes. No: Gb does not have ANY relevance
    for iDVD.
But probably You have selected the wrong kind of Quality.
    - Best Performances = less than 60 min
    - Best Quality = less than 120 min.
Backwards Yes but it's like this.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Disc image file & CSS encoding?

I originally exported a project with CSS encoding from DVDSP to a DLT tape for replication. (DDP 2.0 with CSS)
I then created a disc image file of this project and don't remember if I had checked CSS format. Is there a way to determine this by looking through the Video_TS folder or possibly another way.
    thanks,
    dave

    Dave,
Disc Images, per se, cannot have CSS applied to them (they're fixed at 2048 bytes per sector). This is so you can write the Image to DVD-Recordables - which is not allowed to have CSS on them, or mount the Disc Image on various machines; again, no CSS allowed in that application.
For sure, Disc Images do have CSS applied to them, but this is only during DDP 2.0, DDP 2.1, or CMF formatting. Though then, you'll have an unplayable Disc Image in that case, until the replicator applies the unscrambling keys during mastering.
So, if you left the CSS option on, it would have no affect (setting ignored) if formatting a regular "img" to hard drive or Recordable.
    Take care,

  • Burn error (disc image)

All of a sudden, iDVD 5.0.1 won't burn a disc image. Gets to some point through the process (might be half way, might be right through), then says, "Burning completed. Some errors were found during the burn process". Doesn't create any file at all. Have tried buring a few different projects, with the same result.
    Any clues?

I am having exactly the same problem. My iDVD project started in iPhoto as a "saved slideshow". I have followed all of the steps as provided in two 3rd party manuals -- Jim Heid's "iLife '05" and David Pogue's "iMovie and iDVD 5 -- the Missing Manual". I have even done a "Project Archive" file as the basis to burn the iDVD to ensure that all the resources are together and available. My project consists of a 24 minute slideshow comprised of 230 photos all with "Burns Effect" panning and zooming and with a background music track. This was sent to iDVD from the iPhoto commands. The "Memories" theme was applied with text modification, changes to the font style text location and color, and changed audio selection. A second slideshow was added which consisted of an archive of all the photos used in the original, plus some added ones that were not used. This added a second button on the main menue with three sub-menues on a secondary menu, where the photos were automatically broken down by iDVD into three groups of photos of less than 100 each for a total playing time of approximately 6 minutes (1 sec per photo). The project was then saved and archived. Everything plays fine up to this point. The total memory of the saved archived project file is 2.86 Gb. The rendering and processing time for iDVD to create the disk image (.img) file exceeded 5 hours. I've tried to generate the disk image three times. Like Jim White, in one case after nearly 3 hours, the program put out an error message saying that errors had been encountered and the processing was being aborted. In the two other cases, the processing went the complete 5+ hours; gave a message that the "burning was finished, but that some errors had been found (on verification?) and produced NO FILE.
I am using a Mac G4/1.25 Ghz MDD , Mac OS-10.4.2 with 768Mb RAM and 13.5 Gb of available hard drive storage at the beginning of disk image processing; with iPhoto 5.0.4 and iDVD 5.0.1.
I have no experience with earlier versions of iDVD, so I can't say if this is a problem created by the 5.0.1 update, or the upgrade to Tiger. In any case, this is extremely poor error coding, especially considering the amount of time required for the image processing -- i.e.to state after 5 hours that an error was found which aborts or invalidates the burn without providing any clue as to what or where the error was -- this makes the entire software package of virtually NO VALUE.

  • Need your advice about image creation

    Hi,
I am trying to create image of my c partition on Satellite A100-529 - no luck. Norton ghost freezes (booted from DOS) just after start, g4l cannot load (kernel panic), partimage, being a part of SystemRescue CD package does not see the hd drive! Has anyone tried using any image creation/restore software other than Toshiba Recovery CD? Any luck with it? Please let me know.
Thanks in advance for any help on that matter.

    Hello Czeslaw
I have very good experiences with NORTON GHOST 2003 (Version 2003.775). This application runs under Windows and I have tested it with several Toshiba notebooks. It works perfect.
I use my unit just for work and I create image every two or three weeks. I create it always on partition D and if something goes wrong I can start Ghost application and restore the unit from partition D. If you want you can also create DVDs.

  • IDVD can't create disc image

I posted this in the iDVD forum and it was suggested that I also post it here, since its an FCP movie.
(I use Final Cut Studio 5) Here is my iDVD post:
(I have searched iDVD for solutions and have tried all i could find, as you'll read below, but still nothing worked for me, .....)
I made 3 movies in Final Cut, exported them as stand alone movies. (This is the way I have done it in the past)... one is 43 minutes 16:9, one is 43 minutes letterboxed, other is 9 minutes 4:3. They had chapter markers in them.
Created an iDVD project, widescreen format. Added the movies ( both by dragging and dropping and by 'add movie' command) and created a slideshow, with added audio.
I 'Save as disc image' so i can burn several copies. This I have done a lot of times, in the past.
Since Friday last, every attempt has given me an error: Multiplexor Error ...There was an error during muxing preparation (Project conversion) is the most common one. (I don't know how to access Terminal for more details)
    I have tried:
    • I first encoded at Professional setting .... error message
    • changed the encoding to High (to fit all three movies) ... read here that the Multiplexor error was due to the app not calculating the size right ... same error
    • removed the plist ... same
    • moved files off my hard drive for more space ... same result
    • removed the letterboxed movie to decrease size: same error
    • chapters: idvd did not recognize the FCP chapters (never had this problem before) so added ones in iDVD ... same error
    • removed idvd chapters... same result
    • went back to FCP and removed the chapters and re-exported the movies .. same result
    • change encoding to Best Performance (only 2 movies and slideshow now) ... same result
    • changed the theme ... same
    • removed the theme's audio... same result
    • reinstalled idvd ... same
    • brought the movies into iMovie, added chapters and exported (as QT movie to DV stream) ... same error, and the chapters disappeared again
    • saved the dvdproject in the Documents folder on my hard drive (thought this would do the trick as it had been on an external) ... same error
    I don't know what's left to try!!
I'm doing all the things that I used to do but am having no positive results . The only thing that I have changed since the last dvd I made (a year ago) is upgrade to Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Can anyone help me ... please? This is a commemorative project that is needed for an association's archive, so I can't not do it. I'm just at my wit's end and don't know what other measures to take. (other than use DVD Studio, and don't know how!)
    Thank you
    Elizabeth
    Added FCP info:
movies were exported using QT conversion
    Format: QT Movie, default settings
Options: size: NTSC 720x480 4:3 (for small movie)
Settings: Best; Keyframes Automatic; H.264, 29.97 fps; no internet streaming.
For 16:9 movie: same, but Size: Current (630x354)

.... so when you all were telling me to use Compressor and DVD Pro, I went to the local McNally-Robinson and checked out the resources there.
Found a Mac Genius book on FCP, which lightly touches on compressor, and an Apple Pro training book on DVD Pro 4, which also touches a bit on Compressor but gives specific instructions on settings to get me started (and which i have since experimented with).
So I naturally bought them and have been reading in steps and then going to work. (That's why i haven't replied to you: wanted to be able to give you a report.)
    Since last week I have
    • compressed 2 movies, and recompressed the main one several times to fine tune the quality
    • made a dvd pro project (and 'saved as' in various versions and configurations) that has:
    • a 16:9 video with chapters, added in dvd pro
    • a 4:3 video with chapters( Dvd pro) converted to individual stories
    • a slideshow
    • a folder added to the dvd-rom with the photos used in the slideshow
    • an intro menu with my own livetype generated background movie (also used in the video)
    • the dvd template used changed to 16:9 instead of 4:3 aspect
    • 3 chapter menus for the 16:9 movie
    • a story menu for the 4:3
    • background music, different for different menus
    • remote control connections, for the tracks and the menu (that all work) (except for one problem that I have posted in the DVD forum)
    • built and formatted a few of the configurations to make disc images that then played in dvd player (but haven't burnt to disc yet as i am waiting to solve the final 'menu' button problem)
Haven't done scripts or layered menus, or subtitles yet, and none of my work uses alternate angles, but i think I've got a fairly good handle on this now. And I think I'll use DVD Pro and Compressor from now on .... they're great and DVD pro is much more able to be individualized.
I still need to experiment more with Compressor, tho', and to learn more about the compression codecs.
(I don't like the quality of the Livetype segments in the 'send to QT' option form FCP, they're blurry. And the 'using Compressor' videos have nice crisp text, but there are residual lines in the edges of things wherever there is movement. I always set the Motion Estimation as 'best', and 2 pass VBR Best, and in the last one I tried, i set the Average bit rate at 7.6, max 8.9 and the GOP to IBP, size 7.
Doesn't seem any different from the others, just a teeny bit larger in size. But i'm happy with it for now, no more time to tinker with this part on this project.)
So thank you all for your help, and i will now start posting any problems with this (or any other) project to the other forums. (but I'll check back here again in case you have another bit of advice for me

  • Quality drop of film in idvd disc image or DVD

I’ve made some films in FCE HD exported them to QT and used a idvd (6.0.3) theme to write a dvd, all I I should and have done many many times before.
All the films exported to QT are in good quality when you watch them in QT, even if you play them in IDVD they look perfect, but once the dvd is written, or even written to disc image (so it can’t be a bad dvd) there is a huge quality drop. It does not look like a high quality apple made film anymore, compare it to an old analog filmed thing with huge bad pixels blocky view, like I used a crystallize effect in imovie (but the film has never been in imovie), not smooth at all as it is playing in QT or did in FCE
It even shows bad on my tv, so not only on my 15,4 macbook or 20” cinema display
This is very humiliating when you play it to a crowd of friends
Is this a idvd 6 problem, might switching to DVD studio Pro be a solution?
I have had this problem ever since I used IDVD6, could returning to IDVD5 be a good cure?
This can not be a good direction of working…

First of all, how long is your movie? The closer it is to Best Quality's 2 hour limitation the more artifacting may occur. I find that if I keep things under 90 minutes I get much cleaner results. If it is over 90 minutes I split it over two projects (this all assumes you are using Single Layer DVD/burner. DL will, of course, handle longer movies differently)
The suggestion to make sure everything is PAL is totally correct. Make sure all your FCE sequences are PAL as well as iDVD
Just to clarify: From FCE Export as Quictime Movie ... not Quicktime Conversion. You can decide to make it self-contained or not but this will not affect the quality.
Compressing to MPEG2 is certainly an "invasive" process. DVD Studio Pro and Compressor gives you more options, but for most of my movies I use iDVD and get clean results ... except, as I said, if the running time is very long.
The other thing to note here: What is your source material? Are we talking DV original? Or were the original video files another codec, like MPEG4, or MPEG2 from a DVD ... if so, you already went thru re-compression in order to work in FCE ... by the time you make a DVD, yikes. If it is all DV original, you are really only encoding once.
And viewing your work on a TV applies to every step of the process, including in FCE. While working there, use a TV to monitor your work and you will have an accurate idea to what your image quality actually is
