IE 11 opens blank tab

IE 11 opens a blank new tab on a windows 7 64 bit computer. I have had this problem before. After much research the only thing I found to work was uninstalling 11 and reinstalling 10.  I cannot remember how I did that.  All I remember is it was
a lot of work.  After a few months IE automatically updated back to 11 and the problem came back.  Is there an easier, more permanent solution?  When I click on a link that should open a new tab the address in the new tab appears to be the same
as the old tab but the screen is blank.

Hi Gary,
thanks for the effort.... not quite what I expected.... a sample of what actually happens on your computer....
(google have different websites for different locales)...
You can try...
Tools>Internet Options
>Security tab, click "Reset all zones to default"
click the Trusted Sites icon, 'Sites' button, remove any google or youtube domains from the list.... (the Trusted sites zone actually has lower security).
THEN
>General tab of Internet Options>Tabbed browsing>Click the 'Restore Defaults' button.
>Content tab of Internet Options>check Popup blocker.
THEN
Tools>Manage Addons>Show all addons.... locate the Google Toolbar, Google toolbar helper in the list and disable them.
!important
Close and reopen ALL open IE windows (for the changes to the google addons to take place)
... it may be a good idea to reboot you computer at this stage (even better is to completely remove the google toolbar and then reboot, cause it hooks itself back into the browser without you knowing it).
If removing the google toolbar from you machine is not an option...
go to toolbar.google.com and check for an update for their toolbar,
or
Click on the Spanner icon on the GTB and turn off
Popup blocker
and
Quick Scroll
and
highlight search terms
THEN
go to google.com/history and turn of the Google History tracking.

• I "upgraded" to FF4, now it doesnt work properly, wont open pages, will open blank tabs when i click on a link, tried to go back to the older one but that doesnt work now either, have tested it with Safari and it opens everything fine. Any ideas?

After upgrading to firefox 4 im now having a lot of problems using the browser.
if i try an open a link in a new tab it will just open up a blank tab, if i click on links or even type in the google search bar at the top it doesnt do anything, it just says "done" and the circle thing stops as if im on the page already, have tested it with Safari doing the same things and Safari works fine. I'd swap but all my bookmarks and passwords are in Firefox so id rather stay with that.
I tried going back to the older version of firefox (3.5 or something) but seems the bugs are here to stay now.......so.......any ideas? because its really annoying, shouldn't have "upgraded".
Is there a new patch coming out anytime soon or should i start getting used to Safari?
Thanks for your help.

I would copy over the entire thing if you have room.  With iTunes 10.4 though, you can download any previous iTunes purchases you have made in the past with your current iTunes account.  While in iTunes, look at the left hand side of your screen and select "Purchases" and look at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Download Previous Purchases".  If you have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad...you can do the same thing from each device.  Nice new feature...just remember that those ripped CDs need a back-up!!!  Enjoy...

• 10g Reports open blank tab in Firefox

We're testing a 10g forms/reports application and the forms work fine in both IE and Firefox (Tested 6, 3.5 and 3.0 - same behavior) but when calling a 10g report from a form Firefox just opens a blank tab.
No error message. Doing a View Source on the tab shows no code at all.
The report opens fine (It's a PDF report so it either opens Acrobat within an IE tab, or in an stand-alone Acrobat window, depending on the Acrobat preferences) in Internet Explorer 6,7, and 8 but it's just Firefox where we're having this behavior.
Any ideas?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Firefox on Ubuntu Linux won't open PFD files (opens blank tab)

Running Firefox in Linux (Ubuntu 13.04).
When I click on any file (or email attachment) that is in PDF format, Firefox opens a blank tab and will not display contents.
I saw a similar question for Apple PCs but it doesn't work on Linux and neither does the Windows fixes. This has only begun with the last udate to Firefox.
Unfortunately like most people, I did the dumb thing and update then went nuts loading add-ons so it could be an add-on and not just the update.
The same issue is occurring on thre PCs (AMDS and Intel) - one on Mint and the rest on Ubuntu

Problem solved - it was caused by an add-on called "PDF Download 3.0.0.2)
To fix - in Firefox :
Click on Tools command (top of screen)
Select Extensions
click on "disable button beside PDF Download
Close Firefox and restart it.
Clicking on any pdf file should open a new tab now and the document will appear there.

• Firefox opens blank tab every time a .pdf file is opened. How can keep Firefox from doing this?

A blank tab opens in Firefox every time I open a .pdf file. I've noticed several people have this issue but no sufficient response has been posted yet. It is incredibly annoying, especially since I may open multiple pdf files at once and when I return to Firefox there are several blank tabs open.

Are you using the built-in PDF Viewer (pdfjs) or the Adobe Reader, either in Firefox or standalone?

Every time I try to access a blank tab, I am unable to. I've tried using the shortcut (command + T), manually selecting "new tab", and clicking the (+) tab button. This issue occurred after my recent Mozilla update.

We have seen reports about a Community Toolbar extension causing this issue with not being able to open a new tab.

• IE11 Opens blank tabs, must use new window

I'm running Windows 7 Pro SP1 with IE11 on my desktop. About two months ago I d/l'd all updates through the usual windows update and let them install. Shortly afterward I noticed that IE11 was no longer working correctly. I would click on a link and a new
tab would open but it was blank. I then tried it with open in new window and it would do nothing. Then I tried the usual disable add-ons and such with the same results. I then tried using the reset and it kept telling me that I had to close all open window
and programs. despite nothing open or running. Then I booted in safe mode and was able to successfully reset IE. I tried once again to use IE and the same thing continues to happen. IE11 has basically been rendered useless. I even tried going back to prior
versions like 10 and even 9 with the same results. Troubleshooting came up with nothing.
Can someone please help? I'm using Firefox as my default now and would like to go back to IE11.
Thanks
Michael

• With multiple tabs open, and selecting a new (blank) tab, RoboForm open new web page in far left tab, not the new (blank) one. How to correct this?

Problem: Firefox Browser Tabs when using RoboForm
When using Tabs in the Firefox browser (with multiple Tabs already open), I (1) click to open a new (blank) tab and then, (2) click on RoboForm to go to a new website. Instead of the new website opening in the newly opened (blank) tab it opens in the first (far left) tab. This only began happening when I installed Firefox 5.0 and RoboForm Desktop v7.3.2 at the same time.
My system: HP Pavilion Media center, Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, 8GB RAM, Firefox v5.0, Roboform Desktop v7.3.2

Thanks a lot. The culprit turned out to be Webmail Notifier. Unfortunately, there seems to be some problems on their end that the developer has not yet responded to, but something about the extension is screwing up tab functionality.
Thanks!

• I want blank tabs in FF 13. How do I get them

I used to be able t open blank tabs. Now with 13 I can't. I don't want my browser history obvious to everyone around me. I like the blank tabs. I find it convenient when researching something that if someon walks into the room i can open a new BLANK tab and they can't see me having researched stuff for their bday or the like. Nor do I want my family prying around able to see what I've been doing (not ashamed of my browswer history but its private thank you so very much)
I tried NewTabURL but it hasnt helped. Why has FF decided for me what I can and can't have? Why can't i make the decision as to how I want my tabs, not some focus group

• When I click the home button, it takes me to my home page AND opens a blank tab. How can I get it to stop opening the new tab!

I have igoogle as my hompage. When I click the home button, it will open my igoogle page but also open up a blank tab as well. Firefox didn't always do this, it just started. Maybe when I upgraded to the 5.0. I've tried looking in the options and I can't find something there and there doesn't seem to be a solution on the web. How do I get it to stop doing that?

• Why won't my Firefox open with my home page instead of a blank tab?

The browser always opens in a new tab even when I have it set to open in my home page. When I have Firefox set as my default browser it opens in a new blank tab when I click a link in a document or email. The only time I get my home page on opening Firefox, is if the browser is already open and I choose to open a new window. However, when I do that I lose my yahoo toolbar settings for the newly opened window. Yes, I have tried removing cookies, and that does not work. This problem is exasperating, I do not like IE, but I use it because it opens links without my having to keep the browser open all the time.

Hi tigerleatoo, I'm not sure I understand your question.
When you launch Firefox using its program icon, you should get your preference from the following tab:
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > General > "When Firefox starts"
So in your case, you should see your home page(s).
When Firefox is completely closed and you launch it using a link in email or a document, Firefox usually will ONLY open that linked page and nothing else. Are you getting a blank tab in addition? Do you want your home page in addition?
Is the problem that you want external links to open a new window when Firefox is already running?
Firefox tries to follow your preference for new tabs vs. new windows for both internal and external links.
In other words, if you have set Firefox to open new windows in a tab here:
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Tabs
Then external links will usually open in an existing window rather than in their own window.
There is a way to split these so they behave differently, but because the steps are detailed, I won't burden you with those unless you need them.

• When I click on a link within a website to open a document (word, excel etc.), Firefox doesn't open it. Even when I tell it to open in a new window, it just opens a blank tab labeled "untitled."

When I try to click on a link to a document within a website, that document doesn't open like it should. For instance, if I go to the census website and click on a link to open an excel spreadsheet, Firefox doesn't do it. It usually does nothing; if I tell it to open in a new window or tab, it just opens a tab labeled "untitled" that ends up being a blank page.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== 2 months ago?

Go to Tools->Options->Apps
Here you should see two columns: Content Type on the left, Actions on the right.
Find and select excel spreadsheet or any other content type in the left column. There should be a corresponding action in the right column. What is it? You can use the drop-down list to select the option you want:
Always Ask - Firefox will ask each time: What do you want to do with this file?
Save file - Firefox will save this file to your computer
Use - Firefox will give this file to the program to open it
In case of saving, Firefox will either prompt you every time where you want the file to be saved, or save it to the default location. It depends on the preference in
Tools->Options->General->Download

• Right-clicking on links and selecting "Open Link in New Tab" opens a blank tab.

Seems like opening links in new tabs just doesn't work in any fashion. I right-clicked a link (several, actually) to open it in a new tab. It opened a blank tab. No sign of ever acknowledging the link, nothing in the URL bar. Just blank.
Wonder if this is related to my earlier question about opening links from Thunderbird being broken as well...

the user cor-el has a method that does not require any add-ons. He States
This code in userChrome.css will move "Open Link in New Window" to the top of the context menu.
<pre>@namespace url("<a href="http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul">http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul</a>"); /* only needed once */
#contentAreaContextMenu &gt; * { -moz-box-ordinal-group: 2; }
#context-openlink { -moz-box-ordinal-group: 1 !important; }</pre>
the user jay_ff shows how to do it using the Menu Editor Add-on
1. Install the Menu Editor add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/menu-editor/ .
2. After the installation, go to Firefox> add-ons (or simply use Ctrl+Shift+A)
3. Go to the Menu Editor "Options"
4. In the "Main context menu," simply grab the "Open link in New Tab" and place it below the "Open Link in New Window"
5. and Voila! You may also change other menu options if you want to!
I tried jay_ff method first and found that indeed changing the Main Context Menu did cause the hotlink context menu to change as well.

• Why is there a blank tab when I open firefox when there wasn't one before?

When I open firefox, I have it set to only open ONE home page but for some reason, it opens that page and then a blank one. How do I get rid of the annoying blank tab that pops up with my home page now? It is extremely annoying. Thanks!

You can check the home page setting:
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page
Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.
You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
