IE downgrade broke Open in Word functionality

Good day,
We have a user that upgraded his IE to 11 but then needed to have it rolled back for compatibility with our Oracle system. Upon rolling back the browser to IE9 it now takes a very long time to open any Office docs through SharePoint. Office web app opens
the preview just fine, but upon clicking "Open in (Word/PowerPoint/Excel)" the system hangs and the document sometimes opens, but only after a minute or so. Sometimes a message also pops up "{webapplication} is not responding."
Only one user is experiencing this problem and only after his IE version was rolled back from 11 to 9.
I have rebooted the computer, reset IE settings, uninstalled extraneous toolbars and add-ins, verified ActiveX was enabled, disabled Symantec - I'm stumped. Is there some registry value that needs to be reset?
Thanks,
Daniel

I didn't think this was going to work, as the problem described in the article was for users that had multiple versions of Office installed, and we did not upgrade his office suite. Nevertheless, we removed the owssupp.dll from Office folder and ran a repair
on Office 2010 - problem persists.
Completely uninstalling IE is not possible, as it is integrated in with windows explorer, but we did roll back all the way to IE 8 and the problem still persists. Upon installing back up to 11 the problem is still there, which makes me begin to wonder if
the problem is even browser related?
I have also:
Disabled/re-enabled SharePoint OpenDocuments Class and Office Document Cache Handler add-ons,
Unchecked 'Automatically detect settings' under Internet Options>Connections>LAN settings
Ensured Enable Enhanced Protection ModeSecurity" category and find the entry that says
Just to reiterate my issue, the user has Office 2010 and is interacting with SharePoint 2010, upgraded his IE from 9 to 11, rolled back IE to 9
User clicks "Open in Word," and it takes >60secs to get the Word loading screen. If you try to interact with the page during this time you receive a message "[webapplication name] is not responding." Before he upgraded/downgraded his
browser everything worked fine for two years. He is the only user having this issue. Nothing shows up in the log, no error message appears (except for 'page not responding'), document does open but only after unacceptable wait time (IF this wasn't a C-level
exec I'd just tell them to deal with it)
Next step is to reimage the laptop. I surrender!

  • How can I open a word document in C++ with a CNiWordApplication object?

    Hello,
For an application, i need to open a word document using VisualC++ and CNiWord classes (CNiWordApplication, CNiWordDocument...). I successed to create a new CNiWordDocument with the CNiWordApplication CreateDocument() function. But when using the OpenDocument() I have error message about violation error. Must I create another objet before calling the OpenDocument() function? Is it possible to have an example of code to open a word document?
    Thank you for your help.

I tried the following code to open a doc file in an MFC application.
    CNiWordApplication word;
    CNiWordDocument doc = word.OpenDocument("c:\\books.doc");
This worked fine for me. I tried this with Word 2003 and Measurement Studio 7.1
Try running one of the shipping examples. You can find examples for this under ..\MeasurementStudio\VCNET\Examples\Office\

I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with latest Lion. Can anyone tell me why, when I open word or preview etc that multiple files open? For eg if I open a word doc, the last 1-3 docs that I have worked previously on all open. Can anyone tell me why?

You have a choice as to whether or not applications in Lion like Word or Preview (or even Safari) save and re-open previous documents or windows... just hold down the option key while quitting a program and when you re-open it you won't get the previous documents or windows when you re-open the application. You can see this by selecting the open program in the menu bar and when holding down the option key the quit function will change to quit and discard open windows. This feature in Lion is referred to as "Resume" and is great if you want to restart an app and return to what you're doing (for example in Safari re-opening existing windows and tabs from your previous session). You still have the option to close individual windows within an app before quitting and they will not re-open when the app is launched again.
This Resume function is not related to saving your work (a word or text document for example). This is handled by Lion's "Auto-Save" and "Versions" functions. See http://www.apple.com/ca/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html
Hopefully this is the complete answer you're looking for.

  • In converting a .docx file to .pdf the the Word functionality of linking screen tips to hyperlinks is lost. Why?  How can screen tips be saved in pdf if at all?

In converting a .docx file to .pdf the the Word functionality of linking screen tips to hyperlinks is lost. Why?  How can screen tips be saved in pdf if at all?

Thanks for replying. I am converting from MS Office Word document to Adobe Acrobat Document and opening with Reader XI - sorry my mistake.
I now notice another problem. On trying to open a specific hyperlink in the pdf version I get the message  'Acrobat does not allow connection to: www.biblegateway.com'.  Why would there be a restriction?

  • App.opendoc does not display security warning window like e.g. "open a file" function?

When I link from one PDF to the other via "open a file" function (both PDFs are located in %userprofile%/mydocuments directory), Reader X and XI open a security warning box. If I agree to open the target file, this specific file always opens without displaying the warning again.
When I link to the same file via app.opendoc, the security warning box does not open. So I do not get a chance to add the target file to the list of trusted files.
Is there any way to motivate app.opendoc to display security warning boxes due to the new sandboxing technology in Reader >= X? So that I get a chance to add the target PDF to the trusted PDFs?

Is there any chance that the application is being run from Developer Suite? In other words, is Developer Suite installed on the client machine and hosting the app?
Regardless, although anything is possible, I have never heard of what you are describing. In all cases, the dialog box should be the java dialog which is a grayish/purple color. The exact color will vary depending on the JRE version you are using.
If my first point is not the case, I would recommend that you consider using WebUtil 10.1.2.2 and also patch the AS environment to the same version. To get WebUtil to 10.1.2.2, you will need to patch a Developer Suite home and copy frmwebutil.jar to the AS home. After patching, I believe you will also find an updated webutil.pll in the DevSuite \forms directory which will also need to be copied then compiled on the deployment server.
Also, ensure that you are using Jinitiator 1.3.1.26 or newer. If you are using the Sun JRE, be sure you are using a certified/supported version. For example, you can use the latest 1.5.x Sun JRE with Forms 10.1.2.2, which is 1.5.0_15

  • Office Web Apps: WordViewer redirects when opening in Word

I have installed Office Web Apps on a SharePoint 2010 farm and it works fine. However, when I have a Word document open in the browser and click "Open in Word" the Word Viewer control redirects the browser back to the document library. Can I somehow
configure it to stop doing that? I want it to stay on the same page.
    /Andreas

    Hi Andreas,
I think it was by design so that you only had the document open with one set of features. If you open a document in the Word desktop application, and introduce content or functionality to the document that will prevent other authors’ ability to
edit the document in Word Web App.
For example, don’t use permissions features such as editing restrictions or marking the document as final. If you want to restrict access to the document, use the permission features where the document is stored (SkyDrive, Office 365, or SharePoint).
Also, If another author saves the document with unsupported features before you have saved the document in Word Web App, you might not be able to save your work in Word Web App. If you have Word 2010, Word 2013, or Word for Mac 2011 you can prevent losing
your changes by opening the document in the Word desktop application. Click
Open in Word, copy your changes from Word Web App, and then paste them in the document in Word. When you save the document in Word, your changes are saved on the server.
That said I will send an email out to our DL to see if there is a relatively painless way to modify the behavior.

  • Opening MS WORD files in Appleworks

I never bought MS Word during the 30 day trial. Now it looks like I'll be getting a bunch of Word documents sent to me in the near future.
I read somewhere here that Word files can be opened in Appleworks. I've had no success with it so far. Could someone please tell me how to do that?
Or, If I do have to buy MS Word For Mac, is there a cheap way to do it? Like an old version or something other that the $250+ they're asking for the new one?
Imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.25 GHz 512GB RAM 80GB HD with 120 GB XTNL.

You certainly don't need to buy Office. There are several options available.
TextEdit that is included with OS X can open most Word files.
One of the free Office clones - NeoOffice or Open Office for any Office file. Also, AbiWord, but only for Word files.
icWord from Panergy Software - not free but the trial is fully functional. icWord also has the ability to save as AppleWorks. There is also icExcel. These are approximately $20 (US) each or $30 for both.
Pages, part of iWork, can open Word files.

  • Word opened from word addin freezing the dialog which has opened from addin and crashing the parent word document

I have a office addins which works seamlessly in excel, powerpoint and outlook except in word . We have a option to create a word documents using the templates in a dialog which is opened from addin. And we have an option to set the work area  for
our webapplication either to use filestorage or sharepoint storage.
Again the same addin works perfectly with filestorage cache but the same doesn't work with sharepoint storage. the problem is when we create the new documents using the templates it produces the new word document, once it is created and opened, the parent
word document and the intermediate dialog window should get close but  instead it hangs both of them. when i try to close it explicitly it says word has stopped working.
Issue is with sharepoint 2010+Sharepoint storage and the same is not working with sharepoint 2013 as well as it by default uses sharepoint storage.
I have posted in the VSTO forum before but I haven't got the response yet. please help me this is a major and critical issue for us.
PS: irrespective of OS its not working.
    code to produce a file
    function ProduceFile(strFileUrl) {
       var obj = new ActiveXObject('SharePoint.OpenDocuments.3');
       obj.EditDocument(strFileUrl);

    Hi ShilpaSheshadri,
if this is a quite urgent, i may suggest to open a ticket directly, so that we can have a remote session to check this up. http://support.microsoft.com

perhaps you can also try to use other workaround,

  • HT2518 which program can I use to open a Word file that is formatted for use ONLY on a PC?

I hve a word doc that is formatted only for use on a PC. I cannot change the file at the request of the sender. Is there a way to open and fill out the word document on a mac. I used to have Parrelles which allowed me to do so but no longer have this program. Specifically the word document has pre-programmed drop downs in the form. They do not function, nor allow me to type a word into the field.

There is no such thing as a Word file formatted only for a PC.
You need a copy of Word to open it (Word for Mac), it may also work with Open Office and Libre Office, these are free to download.

  • How to open damaged word file?

I m trying to open MS Word Document file, MS word files are showing error message like word 2003
doesn't open file, I have important document file got corrupted, so How to open damaged word file?
If you have any answer please help assist me.

When a Word document file is corrupted, then you can try several methods to recover it:
    1. First of all, you can try the recovery function integrated with Microsoft Word, as follows:
    1) On the File menu, click Open.
    2) In the Look in list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the file that you want to open.
    3) In the folder list, locate and open the folder that contains the file.
    4) Select the file that you want to recover.
    5) Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
You may find more information about this at:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/recover-the-text-from-a-damaged-document-HP005189610.aspx (for Word 2003)
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893672/en-us (for Word 2007/2010/2013)
    2. If 1 does not work, then you may try third-party tools such as DataNumen Word Repair at
    http://www.datanumen.com/word-repair/
It provides a free demo version so that you can try to see if the data you want can be recovered or not.
    Good luck!

  • Can not open MS word docs

I have an emac running 10.2.8, two users, when i sign in and try to open a word document from the desktop a window opens and says i can not open the document because it's in use by another user. I created this document and the other user has not signed on in months. I then tried all of my word docs and the same message appears. I've shut down the computer, restarted putting in my password but same problem occurs. I repaired permissions but no change. These are my docs and no one else is "signed in" or using them. I cannot copy them or send them via email (which now unexpectedly quits upon opening), Do I need to archive and install?, How much free space on the hard drive do I need to reinstall the OS?
    Thanks for any response.
    Joe

Many system issues can happen as the hard disk drive's capacity is over-full
with saved content and there is no room left in the hard drive for the OS X
and applications to function. The drive should have more than 10% free of
content in order for the OS X and Applications expected to run in the Mac
to have room. This space is for swap files, virtual memory, and flex space
where the system has to automatically find and use free space for most
    everything the computer can do.
{There are specific rules (seen online in helpful articles, some in Support)
on how to transfer iTunes music libraries or make and restore archives
to external hard disk drives and maybe save to DVD if possible; these
    and iPhoto libraries eat up essential space on a hard disk drive.}
The drive is over-full and a failure (including damage to the physical drive)
is a matter of time. He should try to archive music on DVD off the Mac
& then free-up that space on the internal hard disk drive so the OS X
and apps can use the free space for their required functions. Moving a
few dozen original items, after saving them off the computer, to Trash
may be helpful, but that would take a lot of time & looking.
An externally enclosed drive, properly formatted for OS X and capable
of booting the computer (firewire 400) is advised; at this point.
My computers have about 50% empty hard disk drives; that free space
allows the OS X's automatic virtual memory allocation to create and use
that space to help the apps and system function properly. When it is not
there, the system tries to overwrite non-essential files or could cause a
kind of corruption to happen on the main hard disk drive...
The documents and other permission issues are a symptom of other stuff.
    A computer in a good state of maintained health requires some effort;
and when that is not done routinely, things get slower and as the drive
gets full, stuff can fail. So, to free-up user created files such as music
(including hidden duplicates if they exist) so that space can be reclaimed
and used by the OS X, is a good idea.
To get and use an externally enclosed hard disk drive in a self-powered
unit with AC Adapter, probably a FireWire ported one so the transfer
rate is fast enough to get the job done (USB 1.1 is too slow to boot an
older computer, so FireWire can; a clone of the entire computer could
be created on a formatted FireWire bootable externally enclosed drive
and that could be used as a bootable backup.) Archiving this way is a
way to keep all the files and their status collectively together; then if
something happens to the computer's internal drive, this remains.
To boot the computer from the OS X install disc and see if a disk repair
and a permissions repair can be done in that disc's version of Disk Utility
may be helpful. Not sure if that old of a system will tell you much in this
Disk Utility (on installer disc, but not used to install anything) but you
can Verify the SMART status of a hard disk drive & also try to repair it.
But the drive is over-full if there are only mere MBs of free space. He
should look into the Get Info (File menu in Finder) on the Hard Drive
Icon to see what the total capacity of that drive was, and how little is
remaining; then work on getting rid of non-essential items, so as to
save the system itself from damages. Also, if the computer is getting
    older, it may be time to consider a new replacement hard disk drive;
and if so, a larger capacity one could be installed, and the older one
put in an external FireWire enclosure, then the content may be cloned
back into the computer on a partition or direct; so there'd be more
free space that way for the contents. (Or weed out non-essentials, too.)
More information would be needed to proceed, since this situation is
at best sketchy and could be problematic to say the least.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I can't open microsoft word on my macbook pro

Are you using Office 2004 on a Mac running Lion or later? If so, see:
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)
