IE11 Opens blank tabs, must use new window

I'm running Windows 7 Pro SP1 with IE11 on my desktop. About two months ago I d/l'd all updates through the usual windows update and let them install. Shortly afterward I noticed that IE11 was no longer working correctly. I would click on a link and a new
tab would open but it was blank. I then tried it with open in new window and it would do nothing. Then I tried the usual disable add-ons and such with the same results. I then tried using the reset and it kept telling me that I had to close all open window
and programs. despite nothing open or running. Then I booted in safe mode and was able to successfully reset IE. I tried once again to use IE and the same thing continues to happen. IE11 has basically been rendered useless. I even tried going back to prior
versions like 10 and even 9 with the same results. Troubleshooting came up with nothing.
Can someone please help? I'm using Firefox as my default now and would like to go back to IE11.
Thanks
Michael

[You will want to print these instructions for offline reference. You must complete all of the steps in one (1)
uninterrupted session - allow a minimum of two hours. If a Step says to reboot,
reboot!]
1. Right-click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).
3. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key handy, uninstall
Norton Internet Security and then
LiveUpdate (if list) as well as any Norton Add-ons via
Start | Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.
4. IMPORTANT! => Make certain that the Windows Firewall is enbled immediately after rebooting! [Should happen automatically but I want you to check.]
NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING
else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #7 below!
5. Right-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above and select Run as Administrator to run the utility. Don'tTOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot.
6. Do a clean install of Norton Internet Security v21.x using your Product ID, if need be, & reboot; see this page =>
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20090225155411EN_EndUserProfile_en_us?q=reinstall
NOTE: Do NOT enable or install any Norton Add-ons or toolbars (e.g., Norton Anti-Phishing) just yet.
7. Manually and repeatedly run (Norton) LiveUpdate until you get a "no more updates" prompt.
8. Download/run the appropriate scripts from the following Trusted Source (my colleague IE MVP Kai Schätzl):
http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=42&id=133&artlang=en
     Note => The scripts are good for IE9, IE10 & IE11, too!
Tip: The file named ie8-rereg.all.zip contains both of the scripts below (plus a third one you will NOT use).
9a. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar) then double-click on the file named
ie8-rereg.32on64.cmd to run the script.
9b. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar) then double-click on the file named
ie8-rereg.64on64.cmd to run that script then reboot.
10. Re-assert Internet Explorer as the default Browser in the CUSTOM (<=important!) section of
Set Program Access and Computer Defaults. [1]
11a. Right-click on the following link and SAVE the download to your desk"color:#0066cc;">http://www.slipstick.com/doit/chromehtml.reg [2]

  • Firefox freezes temporarily when I click on a tab, then opens that tab in a new window instead.

I thought it was related to a specific website but then noticed it happening on others. The browser freezes and then opens whatever tab I'm on in a new window instead. It's quite annoying.

  • Open other tab in a new window

    Hi,
I have an application with multiple tabs.
I want to have two tabs opend at the same time (open in a new window). I am not abel to do that now.
Can that be done in APEX any way?
    Please suggest.
    Thanks.

    Hi Hari,
I can't think of an easy way to do that as #TAB_LINK# in the page template settings creates the doSubmit() for the standard tabs
For parent tabs, though, this is constructed as a URL - so, perhaps, the standard tabs could be divided into two, or more, parent tabs?
    Three possibilities, apart from that:
1 - Add page aliases to every page and use the same name for the tab - you can then construct the URL on the page template using #TAB_NAME#
2 - Use a Navigation Link to trigger some javascript that pops up the application in a window or second browser tab
3 - Add some javascript to the page template and adjust the tab settings to do something like "javascript:callPage('#TAB_NAME#')" Check the tab names passed and, if it is one that should trigger a popup, then do document.location.href="...." otherwise do doSubmit()
    >
P.S. It would be a frustation for users if they have to log-in into application again just to open other tab in parellel
    >
My users have never requested that sort of functionality, so am not clear what the users need to do that requires two instances of an application?

  • When I right click, I can't copy or spell check or open a tab in a new window.

When I right click on a picture, it doesn't give me the option to copy or to view in another tab as a separate image from the web page it is on. I no longer have the option to spell check. When I highlight text to copy, it doesn't give me an option to copy it but only says "copy link location". I can open a new tab by holding down the control key and clicking the link I want open in a new tab but when I right click and click "Open in new tab" it does nothing. This started happening about a week ago.

You can try to update to Firefox 21 that has been released today.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • While browsing in 2 or more tabs, scrolling down the page with the mouse wheel causes Firefox to unexpectedly open the tab in a new window, closing the tab in the process and losing any data on it (such as a half written email etc.).

This problem is with Firefox 3.6.15 and also in the previous version. I've tried reinstalling but no joy.
This happens a lot. Several times a day. Very irritating. I keep losing work I've typed into a text box or email, or having to go back to the beginning of things (such as audio or video) because it has reloaded in a window.
I have McAfee security which checks the computer every week and removes virus and malware so I'm pretty confident there's no problem with that.
I'm sometimes so plagued by this problem that I have to switch to other browsers (I have Chrome, Safari and IE installed) and have not experienced any similar problem with those.
The problem does not seem to be in conjunction with any plugins. Although I have plugins installed the problem happens when none of the plugins is noticeably in use.

  • Firefox won't open mailto links in a new window like it used to...it just opens gmail in the current tab.

I recently upgraded firefox and now whenever I click a mailto link it opens gmail in the current tab rather than in a new window. How can I get it to open email links in a new window.

  • When I use yahoo images and i open an image in a new window, it tweakes out firefox so that panes are distorted and exerything, the whole firefox browser looks like an F5 tornado took it apart and lumped it on my desktop... is this a known glitch?

When I use yahoo images and open an image in a new window, the page, once I click its tab causes the entire browser to scramble graphically, making it nearly impossible to navigate further. I right-clicked and selected close tab. That regains the visual clarity of the browser. But how can I fix this to browse the images?

    Phillipp,
I tried it again using "save link as", and this time it actually worked! I just now downloaded several more using the "save link as" option, and it works perfectly. Thanks. Problem solved.

  • Can I open dock folders in tabs instead of new windows?

    Hey, guys!
I'm using OX 10.9 and in Finder Preferences I have "open folders in new tab instead of new window" box checked. However, when I click on "open in FInder" in a folder I have in my Dock, such as Dwonloads or Documents, it pops up in a new Finder window. In other words, I'm looking for the TotalFinder behaviour without using the app. Any help?
    Thank you all!

Hi, John, welcome to Apple's user-to-user discussion forums.
Does anyone here know of a way to open new windows without using command click in a tab?
If you want links on a web page to open in a new tab, you need to command-click on them. This will work both for links set up to open in the same window and those set up to open in a new window. There is no setting in Preferences to make links on a web page automatically open in a new tab.
There is a preference setting to open links from other programs, such as Mail, in a new tab. In Safari's Preferences, click on the General icon. Towards the bottom where it says "Open links from applications", check "in a new tab in the current window".

When I start mozilla or open any link in a new window I get the desired page to load but an additional new tab page opens up along with it. • Can I set default to always open a link in a new window, as opposed to a new tab?

Can I set a default to always open a link in a new window, rather than a new tab?

No, not to '''''always''''' open a link in a new window. Whether a link opens in the same window or a new window depends on the the page creator specifying ''new'' or ''blank'' for that link. ''Firefox can divert the new/blank window to a Tab instead, which is the default setting.''
If you don't want tabs when a new/blank window is specified, deselect the pref for ''' Open new windows in a new tab instead''' in Tools > '''Options > Tabs'''

  • Clicking link in mail opens a new tab, not a new window

When clicking on a link in AppleMail, after a recent update, opens a tab in a random window or perhaps the top window in Safari.  Until this update, clicking on the link used to open a new window.  This is driving me nuts.  I am getting links from mail opening in a new tab in Safari windows I reserve for specific topics, or uses.  I do not want unrelated mail links opening and interfering with work in these existing browser windows.  Also, when I see the link from mail is not wanted, I too often close the window like I usually do, but now inadvertently close a Safari window with multiple tabs of important information, that I have trouble recreating.  Where did this come from!?  How do I change it so a new window opens?

I was having the same problem and finally figured out how to change this bahavior.  Go to Safari preferences under the 'Tabs' settings.  Make sure the field "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" is set to NEVER.  That should do the trick.

  • FF4 wont move a tab to a new window. The new window opens fine but the existing tab stays on the current window. What's wrong?

I just upgraded to firefox 4. I'm using session manager extension.
I have multiple tabs open in my firefox window and I want to move some tabs to a new window. I followed the support guide which tells how to do this, however, when I drag the tab off the current window, the new window gets opened as it should, but the tab I was trying to move stays in the current window and does not get moved to the new one. Any ideas what the problem is?
    Thanks

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?<br/> ''A troubleshooting mode.''<br />
You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut. Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut to open it again.''

  • Firefox 7 won't allow me to switch windows; if it's up, it's on top, so if I ask it to open a site in a new window (instead of a tab) I can't get to the window without minimizing the first window. This makes it impossible to work.

I upgraded Firefox to 7 on my Win7 Pro 64 bit desktop yesterday. Today when I try to open a site in a new window, the window opens but I can't switch to it unless I actually minimize the first Firefox instance. Clicking on the second window just shows the first window again.
Worse, it insists on being on top of other programs. I needed to check my Norton Firewall settings against some instructions on a web site, and I couldn't switch back and forth - I could ONLY have Firefox on top. Until you fix this I'm going back to Chrome, guys. I have looked through the Options menus and I can't find an "always on top" box to uncheck.

    Dear mkunz,
I can understand your frustration. I have elected for the option to pick up an item from a UPS location when missed upon delivery before; it is definitely a convenient option when working around a work schedule. I apologize that this option wasn’t available to you for your phone purchase.
We do understand that people have to work and this is why we allow three opportunities for you to receive the product. I see that AWBrown has submitted an idea to ideaX page asking us to look into reevaluating this process. Using your email address you have supplied here on the forums, I was able to look up your order. Based on the tracking information, it appears that you successfully received the phone on 06/03/2014.
If this is not the case, please let me know!
