IE8 bombs attempting to open PDFs.

I installed Reader in new Win 7 64 installation (all updates, etc.) on two computers. I can't open PDFs from IE8 (haven't tried any other browsers or readers yet). I think that Reader won't work until the EULA is agreed to and causes that browser tab to bomb out when clicking on a PDF URL, as on one computer it finally opened to the Adobe EULA, which I Agreed to, and PDFs worked thereafter, after the browser bombed out previously on all other PDFs. I can't get any browser accessible PDF URL to open on the other computer (PDFs in e-mail, etc. open fine). Have turned off pop-up blockers, uninstalled and reinstalled, run repair, update, etc., updated Acrobat also. No other browsing issues. Am about to kill Adobe Reader and try another instead. Any ideas on how to fix this (besides installing Foxit or whatever)?

I have a work around. In the Reader, under Edit, Preferences, Internet, uncheck display PDF in browser. The result is that when I click on a PDF URL the PDF is downloaded and displayed by the Reader, rather than in a browser window. So I can now look at PDF web pages, but just not as web pages. I don't really consider the problem fixed however. This solution is due to Amanda M here:

I do not know if this is an Adobe issue or an IE8 issue. On the other computer, same exact OS, etc., when opening PDF URLs in the browser, kept getting same Internet explorer has stopped working close program, then it cycles another page attempt, same result and gives up. Until one time I got the Adobe EULA popup and clicked Agree. After that the browser opens PDFs fine. Unfortunately I have not been able to reproduce whatever sequence allowed me to agree to that EULA. Perhaps that was totally misleading coincidence, but that is all I have.

Acrobat 9.4.4 Pro Crashes When Attempting to Open PDF Form

OS: Win XP Pro SP3
The machine worked fine until Acrobat updated itself to 9.4.4 then the problem started. Crashes when attempting to open most PDF Forms - even when freshly rebooted or repaired. I originally thought it was related to a browser or Outlook 2007, but later found that it does it under all circumstances. It is my General Manager's machine having the problem, so I need to get this resolved ASAP. Your experience and assistance is much appreciated.
My temporary fix was to uninstall 9.4.4 - Install 9.0 and turn off automatic updates - worked beautifully. It would be nice to get to the bottom of this so we can update our CS4 products.
Another user reported this problem on May 16, 2011 and no one has replied to his post.

Receiving User License Agreement Message When Attempting To Open PDF - 10.1.0

Recently upgraded to Reader 10.1.0. When attempting to open a specific PDF document I receive the following dialog.
This only occurs with one specific PDF, as I have opened other PDF's with the IE browser plugin, as well as PDF's saved to my local machine using Adobe Reader. I can open the PDF if the document is saved first, and then opened through Reader by performing a File -> Open.
Any ideas on how to correct the issue? The application was deployed using enterprise deployment tools along with the Reader customization kit. I did check the checkbox for Accept User License Agreement in the Customization wizard.

I also was pushing the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Privileged
THat didn't seem to have any effect.
I think the other key you had might be the one causing your password protected issue. It is the only difference between mine and your setups from these posts.
So it comes down
1: useing the adobe website to upgrade to 10.1.0 breaks the reader integration in different ways.
2: installing full version from ftp site fixes the issue except for password protected pdf if you have the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown set to 0
changing back to 1 repairs this issue.

Multiple failed attempts to open PDF file from Windows Explorer by double clicking

The configuration of my system is: Windows 7 SP1 x64, Adobe Reader 11.0.10.32.
When double clicking on PDF file or trying Open with Adobe Reader IX in context menu in Windows Explorer or any other file manager, the Adobe Reader opens only after few attempts. At each failed attempt the new AcroRd32.exe process arises. And only after few attempts the file opens! As a result, i see multiple empty AcroRd32.exe processes in Task Manager, each take about 4000 Kb of RAM and the only one file opened. I'm forced to kill those empty processes manually, because they are not killed when closing Adobe Reader window.
I found the same problem on another PC with the same configuration.

Could you please let me know for how long have you started facing this issue.
Open TEMP folder (Press Windows + R and type %temp%) and delete all the files in it.
Does this happen with any specific PDF or all PDFs?
You might try disabling Protected Mode by opening Reader and going to "Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced)"
Let me know how it goes.

Acrobat Closes instantly when attempting to open pdf files

I am currently on windows 7. I have had acrobat x installed for a while, just recently when I double click a pdf it opens briefly (less than 1 second) and then immediately closes.

I have windows 8, and Mozilla Thunderbird email client. When attempting to open PDFs I get this message "Adobe Reader could not open 'Wiring Invoice 409343281 Dated 04_05_2013-2.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)." I have tried documents from numerous different sources, all with the same result. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, repaired, restarted, etc. I did not have this issue with XP and Acrobat reader X. HELP!! I cannot print invoices until this is corrected....thanks!

Could you try to save the PDF file locally and then try to open the PDF file?
Or try downloading sample PDF from here http://www.samplepdf.com/sample.pdf and open it in Adobe Reader.

Cannot open pdf in IE browser

Adobe Reader 11.0.5. Danish, WINXP SP3, IE8.
I can open PDF from PC but not from browser only when right click on file and then save on PC. This works in some cases. Problem arised I believe after updating 11.0.5.
I have checked PDF enabled under Add-ons.
I have repaired Adobe Reader. I have unstalled Adobe Reader and reinstalled.
But nothing has helped so far.

That article is about Flash Player, but ActiveX Filtering will block PDFs from opening too.

Error opening pdf's from PC stored on Mac

I have been experiencing an error when attempting to open pdf's stored in the public folder on our Mac.
The message reads:
"There was an error opening this document. The file is already open or in use by another application."
It doesn't matter which PC we use to access the pdf's from and happens regardless of which version of Acrobat is being used, the same error occurs.
The public folder on the Mac has no restrictions.
Mac 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel
OS 10.9.4
Adobe Creative Suite 2014
*Also discovered none of the InDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator files can opened from PC's can be opened while they are stored on the Mac either.

Thanks for responding. We do not work using a Windows domain.
I can open .txt and Microsoft Publisher files, but I get errors on nearly everything else including any Adobe product files and Word files.
We used to keep files both the PC and Mac had to access on an external network drive, but exporting pdf's from the Mac (as well as opening and saving) took too long. So we moved everything to the Mac. If I have to work on a file I have to drag it to the PC desktop. We can't save directly to the Mac either. Files have to be copied onto the Mac.

Preview won't open PDF

Cannot open PDF's in email (Entourage). Attempting to open PDF attachment, Adobe Reader appears. I click "agree" and then get message that"internal error occurred."
In Preview, under pull down menu, "PDF display" is grayed out. I cannot find any way to make Preview my default PDF opener. I have tried trashing A. Reader and restarting but the PDF's still want to open with Adobe Reader and I cannot get Preview to do anything!. I'm stumped.

In order to set a document's default app do this:
Select any appropriate document (PDF in this case) then Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open with section select the desired default app from the drop down menu. If it's not listed then select Other to navigate to the desired app and select it. Then click on the Change All button. This will associate the default app with all similar document types.
Note this may not help you with the particular PDF file that gives the error. That document may be damaged.

Unable to open PDF documents on web pages

Installed Adobe Reader most recent version on a new Windows 7 Pro 64-bit computer. When attempt to open .pdf files found on work related websites, it launches a window that just has a box with a black "x" in it. Checked the Edit, Preferences settings and using IE 11 with plug-in set to Enabled. Already attempted to uninstall and reinstall Adobe Reader from Adobe.com.

The solution is described in this Microsoft KB: 32-bit browser applications may not work as expected in Internet Explorer 10
However, the "Fixit" in that article is only for IE10 on Windows 8, so you will have to make that registry change manually.

Cannot open pdf after installing Acrobat Reader XI

Installed as recommended update. Now attempts to open pdf produce the message that file "could not be opened because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences." What does this mean? Running Windows XP. Havve exhausted Acrobat help.

Acrobat 8 & Acrobat Reader 8 slow to open PDFs across WAN

I'm currently having a really strange problem with the users in one of my offices when they attempt to open PDFs with either Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 or Acrobat Reader 8.1.2. These users are connecting across a WAN via a point-to-point T1 to the main location to open these PDFs. Some are nearly 8MB and yet Acrobat Reader 8 launches and displays them in about five seconds. Literally. Yet other files, around 2.5-3MB, take about a minute to a minute and a half to open. I know the larger PDFs were created with software not from Adobe, but instead were created using this PDF printer driver made by Iteksoft. It seems the Iteksoft app creates them in such a way that AcroRead can launch and then begin displaying the file even though I know there's no way an 8MB file has copied across the WAN in just a few seconds. However, the other PDFs apparently don't have that "feature" and so the entire file must be copied before AcroRead launches. Interestingly enough, when the users had AcroRead 7 or Acrobat Pro 6 all files opened "quickly" so something has changed in Acrobat/Acrobat Pro 8 in how the app opens PDFs.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Ok, so they are being opened directly in Acrobat/Reader.
In this case, Acrobat (or Reader) doesn't need to read the whole file
in the general case. A PDF file contains a large number of objects
describing what is on the pages, and the other aspects of the file.
There is an index to these objects.
So Acrobat starts by reading the index, then reads what it needs.
In some cases it may have to read next to nothing, to show the first
page of a document of many pages. In other cases it will have to read
all of the file, because (perhaps) it has one page and so everything
needed has to be read to show you that page.
The amount of data read has very little relation to the file size
(except that it should be no more than the file size). You have to
look at how the file is made up (e.g. page count? What is on pages?)
to go further.

Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

HT4059 When I have a PDF that I want to open and save into iBooks - it will attempt to open it and the shelf flips around to make room for it. But it doesn't save it. I have to end up opening it in Adobe or Kindle app to view & save it.

Can't open pdf files in IE8, but can in Chrome, using Reader 9

Settings for Adobe Reader 9 include, under "Edit->Preferences->Categories:Internet->Display PDF in browser (enabled)", (Adobe Reader 9 settings should be all default).   Internet security settings in IE8 are also default.
Opening a link to a pdf file, say from a search engine query, used to take place in the browser window. No longer so.   All I get when selecting a link to a pdf file is a blank, grey Adobe Reader screen launching, not from within the browser, but as an external window with a blank error dialog box, - and there it hangs.   No document is loaded and the web page crashes, forcing a recovery of the tab by IE8.   I recently updated both to IE8 and Adobe Reader 9 so I don't know which is the source of the problem.
I have been able to work around the problem in IE by right-clicking the pdf link and "save as", then opening the downloaded document from the desktop.   Reader otherwise works fine as a stand-alone utility to open pdf files.   Also, Reader works as expected from within Chrome, and pdf file links are opened effortlessly as a tab within Chrome.
I mostly use IE and do not like Chrome for other reasons, and would like to fix IE so it properly opens pdf files within the browser.   As it is now, pdf files simply crash IE, forcing its automated error recovery.    I have seen similar questions elsewhere, but none of the solutions offered seem to work.

Did u try to disable the "PDF in Browser"-setting in Adobe? The PDF will open in the Adobe window and not in the browser window anymore, but at least it didn't crash.
