IEEE-1394 MoBo connector

Hi,
The Neo Platinum board has 2 IEEE-1394 connectors on it, according to the handbook.
However, these connectors are the same "9 out of 10-pin" connectors used for USB connections.  While this may be fine for the MSI specific adaptor, my computer case has an internal wire with a normal IEEE-1394 6-pin connector on the end.
Anyone know where I could get an adaptor (in the UK)?  I've looked on PC direct seller sites (dabs, etc) and on RS Components but I cannot find one.
Cheers,
David

Found this answer at microsofts website,  looks like a winner for a lot of people.

I hope this can help you.
The 1394 bus driver that is included with Windows 7 replaces the 1394 bus drivers that were included with earlier versions of Windows. See this site for details

You can try the following steps to fix our issue, [sic] This solved my initial problems with a Maxtor III OneTouch drive.
1- Click the Start Button, type devmgmt.msc in the “Start Search” box and press Enter.
2- Expand the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" node in the device tree on the right hand pane
3- Right click the host controller node select "Update driver software ..."
4- Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
5- Select "let me pick from a list of device driver on my computer ..." and Check the box before “Show compatible hardware”.
6. Choose the second option---1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy), and click next to update the driver.

• Firewire IEEE 1394: Capture Card vs. On-Board Motherboard

I should know the answer to my question, but I don't...really. To capture video in my current computer, I had to install a video capture card with an IEEE 1394 Port.  It is my understanding that there are motherboards that have "on-board" IEEE 1394 Firewire. If I purchase such a motherboard, does that mean I will not need a video capture card? In the specs of motherboards they will give the number of available IEEE 1394 Rear Panel Ports. Do these ports connect to "on-board" firewire and can they be used to capture video? Please set me straight. Thanks.

I agree with Neale. One consideration is the number of controller chips you have on either the MoBo connections, or your card.
Why is that important? Especially with Capture from a camera, it is always best to ONLY have the camera hooked to a separate controller chip. Some MoBo's and cards, might have multiple connectors, but they may all feed through a single chip. That might well preclude having any other FW device hooked to any of the other connections. Sometimes, it's tough to tell the number of IEEE-1394 chips, unless one has a good schematic of the board/card and the various chips are shown.
If one uses other FW devices, then the chip count will likely matter. While I have 4 MoBo connectors w/ 2x chips, I also have a multi-chip 4x connector card, plus a multi-chip 6x FW-1394b (FW-800) card.
The two things that you wish to avoid is daisy-chaining ANY camera, and connecting a camera to any shared chip. If I had a card already, and did not need to include it with the old computer, and had a spare slot on the MoBo, I'd install it too, but then I usually have 4-6 FW-800 externals, plus maybe 4 FW-400 externals, and still have empty chips available for my camera.
Good luck,
Hunt

• IEEE 1394 option

I have a MS-6540G v2.X board.
IEEE 1394 is stated as an "option" on this board, but the connector is not fitted.
Can a connector simply be soldered in place, or are other components/modifications needed?

• Please Help.... IEEE 1394

Just brought an IPOD nano ma4777zt/a (don't understand 2nd generation / click wheel ?)
and my PC runs Windows XP home Edition
loaded itunes onto my computer by clicking download on web site Itunes 7
Once complete connected ipod via cable and I've got the message
"No IEEE 1394 Host controller found"
Searched for 8 hours & nothing seems to have worked
Please help !!!!

Carefully check the bottom dock connector for any bent over pins or something in there shorting pins together. A magnifying glass would be a help.
The Firewire data pins on the dock connector are right next to some power pins and if you get a short between them, it can fool the iPod into thinking there is data coming in on the Firewire pins and it will give you Firewire related error messages.
For that matter, be sure to carefully check the Dock end of the USB cable for the same sort of problems. It would be help if you can find, beg, borrow, another USB cable, even if you just go to a local electronics store that sells iPods and see if you can test your iPod with one of their cables. Obviously if it doesn't give you the message on a different cable, then your cable is the issue. If you still get the message, then likely it is your iPod itself.

• IEEE 1394 add-on

Hello.  I have the K8N Neo4-F (PCB 1.0)(MS-7125) motherboard, and I was wondering if it is possible to solder an IEEE 1394 connector onto the board and have it work?  I noticed that on the board, there is a clearly marked set of solder points for a 1394 connector, and the manual calls it J1394_1 (optional).  Apparently I got the option without the 1394 connector, but since the boards with that connector would use the same BIOS, would sticking my own in that slot work?

Ya i agree with Stick choice using the add-on card such as PCI. It's much more safe and cheap.

• IEEE 1394 problem on 845PEMAX2

I tried to use the IEEE 1394 connection tonight to download digital video from a Panasonic palmcorder.  After plugging in the device and getting no response, I looked at the device manager and found a problem showing up.  Windows XP Home Edition says 'This device cannot start(Code 10)'.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device, updating the drivers from the website and then uninstalling and reinstalling with no change.  The device had not shown up as having a problem in the device manager in the past but I had not tried to use it until tonight.
I have an 845PE Max2 MB.
Anyone have a suggestion that might help??

I do not recall seeing the problem (indication in hardware manager that the device has a problem) show up before I connected the palmcorder but I also had not paid any attention.  When I opened the computer case following the attemp to download from the camcorder, I found that one of the connections to the front IEEE 1394 connector had come off of the MB.  I put this back in but it had no effect.  I also tried connecting the camcorder to other 1394 inputs that have socket connections to the MB with no luck.
Since I found the problem, I have tried (at least 4 times) to uninstall the device and then reinstall it.  With nothing connected up, I get the same error message showing up  - it cannot start the device (I assume that it means controller but it is not clear!).  I do not know if this is a remnant of the camcorder being plugged in to the front panel with a missing connection or not.  If it is, it is somehow buried in the Windows XP registry.  If it is not, then it is most likely a hardware problem.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

• Must use IEEE 1394?

I'm looking at purchasing a Panasonic HDC-SD90K hi def camcorder.  It does not have an IEEE 1394 connector; it has a USB 2 connector.  In reading the online material for Premiere Elements 10, I came across the following:
"HDV camcorder: Connect your HDV camcorder to your computer’s IEEE 1394 port using an IEEE 1394 cable. You cannot capture HDV using USB ports."
Does this mean I cannot buy this camcorder, or I cannot use Premier Elements 10?
(My iMac has IEEE1394 "Firewire" ports and USB 2 ports.)

By the way, this camcorder shoots in 1920x1080 at 60p by default -- which is not supported by this program and, if you try to edit it in this program, you'll likely have lots of issues.
If you plan to edit your video in Premiere Elements, but sure to shoot in 1080 60i only.
And, when you start up your Premiere Elements project, be sure to select the settings for Full AVCHD 1920x1080 5.1 audio.

• How to connect a DV camera through the IEEE 1394 port on my A50?

Hi
I have been trying to connect a video camera to my notebook SA50-109 throught the IEEE 1394 port.. but the notebook didn't recognize the camera at all..
although the camera shows 'DV-in' when i plug the cable witch is (4-pin to 4-pin) DV cable..
is there any thing I need to do before to make it work?
any ideas.. please?

Hi there. Your PC should recognize automatically the DV camera. It's OK to have the firewire (1394) connection shown under "network connections". Next to mine it says "connected" although the harddisk connected to it is switched off. Maybe there is something wrong with the cable? Or, another suggestion, try to restart the laptop while the camera is connected ... Not many further suggestions I'm afraid ... Good luck!

• I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

• How do I know if my T400 is with or without IEEE 1394?

My Lenovo automated diagnostics determined that the BIOS software on my T400 is flawed, and that I should download a replacement BIOS.
The page that I am led to gives me a choice of two different BIOSes:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-74161&selectarea=SUPPORT&tempsel...
One choice is T400's "with IEEE 1394, Package 3.09-1.05" and
the other choice is T400's "without IEEE 1394, Package 3.10-1.05"
How should I decide which BIOS to download?

Take a look at the front of the machiine, extreme left, just under where your wristwatch band is w/fingers on the keyboard.  There's a small socket there (to the left of the radio on/off switch) labelled "1394" if you have same.

• HDX 18/dv8t IEEE 1394/Fire Wire performance problem in Win 7

The IEEE1394 interface lives on the PCI express bus at IRQ 16, which is shared by several other devices. Audio interfaces, such as the M-Audio Pro Fire and Fire Wire series do not work reliably with the shared IRQ. In Vista, by comparison, the IEEE 1394 interface has its own IRQ, and seems to run more reliably.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well, I found a workaround for my issue. It's described in this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300836
By disabling the "Sandard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" in device manager, my iPod was correctly recognized and I was able to sync with iTunes. That's the good news.
The bad news is that: a) Windows warns me that my "device can operate faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port" - and the sync with iTunes runs slowly; b) if I reanable that USB device (as suggested in the Apple article, my iPod is no longer recognized.
For now, I'll just disable this device when I need to sync, then reenable it when done. But this is going to be a pain. I really don't consider this a fix. It's really annoying that the iPod is the only USB device that requires this kind of nonsense.
Looking forward to a "real" fix for this some time soon.

• NI-IMAQ for IEEE 1394 hardware compatibilities

If you look at How Can I Tell If My IEEE 1394 (Firewire) Camera Is Supported by the NI-IMAQ for 1394 you will find the dragonfly listed there.
You will also find a reference to Digital camera specification: 1.3 in the camera data sheet which confirms this.

• Missing camera attributes with the NI IMAQ for IEEE-1394 driver

I'm using an ORCA-AG and the IEEE-1394 driver. When i look at the camera attributes (either with MAX or the attribtue inquiry vi.) i can see just some of them (brightness, shutter,...). I have tried the ORCA-ER, which has the same attributes, but uses the PCI-1424 framegrabber. Using this camera i can see and modify more attributes (light mode,...). How can i modify them with the IEEE 1394 driver?
I also have another problem. When i use 1x1 binning the image must be 8bits, if is use 16bits, max cannot aquire the image (timeout error). Does anyone have the same problem?
Thank you very much.

Some non-standard attributes can be modified by directly reading and writing to the memory of the camera. Your camera manual probably has memory locations listed for the different attributes. You can get to these using the low level firewire routines. I have done it once or twice.

• My macbook's mini displayport is actually a IEEE-1394 Firewire port..

I jut got a mini displayport to DGA cable today and pluged in to my macbook but no signal to the external monitor.
I took a good look at the side of the macbook, and the mini displayport (supposed to be) has a mark of IEEE-1394 Firewire simble on top of the port.
left next to this port has a monitor simble but it is a different shape (got a longer tung).
Can any one tell me what is wrong?
By serching the web, they all say (and all look like) the one I pluged in is the mini displayport.

• Can I link my two laptops using IEEE 1394 (Firewire)?

Hi,
I have a X31 and a X60 laptop. Both are running on Windows XP Pro and both have IEEE 1394 (firewire) ports.
I seem to read it somewhere that I can do a network link between two laptops via the firewire ports.
However, it does not work for me after linking them with a firewire cable.
Am I missing something?

Am I missing something?
You have to configure the IPs on the both side as with any other network adapters.
Alternatively you can set the internet sharing to the  fireware adaper, on one side only so the pc with internet shared will acts as DHCP server and the other will atutomagically configure itself with a correct IP.
