If all the dropped frames fixes don't work
Hello all,
I am experiencing dropped frames on playback when I play my movie in the timeline. I am editing standard DV footage on a project (17 sequences) started in June. Last week while adding b roll, I started getting a lot of dropped frames. When they dropped I got the slow disk error message (the one with the scary red lettering.)
I have 4-500 GB Maxtor one touch drives daisy chained together with FW800 and connected to my MacBook Pro with FW400, and 1-1 TB & 1-1.5 TB Maxtor one touch daisy chained together and connected to the computer with FW800.
I've been working to resolve the issue. I've read the threads and the manual. I've tried: trashing prefs, repaired permissions, reduced the playback video quality and frame rate, changed from safe to unlimited RT, selected Play Base Layer Only, Decreased the # of RT layers & Limited RT bandwidth in User Prefs.
The next thing suggested at: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1165 is to check your hard drives. At this point and beyond in the suggestions pass my technical know how.
I have not had a problem with the project and have been editing on it for a few months. It is bigger all the time of course, is that the problem? I am thinking I have a problem with the disk speed/through put of my external drives but what is the resolution? Do I have to buy new drives and copy from the old ones, since the project is on so many drives how would I do that? How do I problem solve from this point?
As I started to have problems I "Saved As" the project to a different drive. It seems like since then the project (the original saved one) opens slowly & I get the spinning beach ball with every function. I used to get the dropped frames at the transitions but now I can't even play the A roll without the dropped frames. I turned off the warning box but when I play the seq. in the timeline it stutters and stops anyway.

Although the Firewire spec allows up to 63 devices to be connected to your computer, *after about five or six drives, there's so much "talking" on the Firewire bus that performance really starts to degrade.* Where possible, limit the number of Firewire drives you are using. Maybe this is not an issue for me. I only have 6 drives in two chains, all Maxtor 1 touch. The 4-500 GB are connected to the computer via FW400. The 1 & 1.5 TB drives are chained together and are connected to the computer via FW800 (but all through the same port anyway, eh?) If I needed to copy some of the smaller drives to a larger one I have another 1.5 TB available.
Would copying some of the 500 GB drives to the 1.5 TB drive be a way to take care of both the over-full drives and the number of drives in the chain problems?
This whole moving FCP files has me nervous.
I am wondering what is the best way to copy one drive to another & not use FCP media manager?
What will that do to my FCP files?
Would it be just a matter of reconnecting media when you open the project next time?
Since I know where the media is that would need reconnecting is that wouldn't be too h*ish, would it?
And since...
at this point I am unable to open my FCP project at all. which means using media manager to move files will be impossible...
next step, suggestions?

WRT610N - intermittent wireless access for all wireless clients; standard fixes don't work
My network had been working fine for over a year, and now I'm getting intermittent wireless access. Everything will be ok for a day or two, and then all of a sudden nothing wireless will work (the wired computer will still work): 1 Vista desktop, 1 vista laptop, 1 XP laptop, wireless printer, and iPod touches.
Vista computers will either say "the network has denied the association request" or the "network key is incorrect" (it isn't). On XP computers, I can get to the point where the computer is trying to acquire an IP address, but it just times out.
So far:
- Made sure signal strength is good (most have full bars)
- Upgraded firmware (worked for 2 days)
- Made sure all drivers were up to date
- Changed the broadcast channel (most recent fix, everything worked for 2 days)
I've never had default configurations; my SSID was enabled and set up from the beginning. I recently moved from WEP to WPA because a new Vista laptop refused to work with WEP. The clients do not pick up any other network signals from neighbors.
A router reboot sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Like everything else I've done, if it works, if it's for a day or so.
Everything worked for a year until about 2 weeks ago (a week after I switched from WEP to WPA - coincidence?).After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you have not done this since your last firmware upgrade, please do this now and see if it corrects your problem. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
To reset the router press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

Adjust it's Wireless Settings -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
2.4GHz Wireless Settings -
- Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
- Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
XP :
Click on Start and goto the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Properties.
Now on this window, click on the second tab Wireless Network and give a check mark on "Use windows to configure my wireless" and then remove all the network names present in the Preferred Networks Window. Then click on OK...
Right click on the Wireless Network Connection again and click on View Available Wireless Networks and try to re-connect to your network...
Now it will give you the opportunity to put the network/wep key, make sure you enter the correct network key and confirm it...
It will connect...
Vista :
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Network and Sharing Center >> Manage Wireless Networks, here remove all the networks present and close the Window...
Click on Connect to a Network and try to re-connect to your Network, it should ask for your Network Key/Password, enter the correct password/network key and click Connect...
It should connect...Once you are connected you should restart the computer, it should connect to Internet...

You have not provided any useful technical information like system specs, error messages or whatever. We don't even know your exact product version.

I purchased PhotoshopCS5 Sept 2010 and still use the same MAC. I invertly deleted the font section but everything else works. How can I fixed this because I use fonts all the time? I don't want to purchase another one since this cost me $699:(

iPhone 4s Wifi problem, After using the device of 7 month. wifi is not working. BEFORE WAS WORKING FINE and now wifi is not able to identify. I tried all the possibilities to fix the wifi, such as resetting network, restart the phone, restore from iTune and setup as new phone, but the problem remain same. turning on the wifi can't recognise any network. any other idiea to fix the wifi of iPhone. I've seen all the posts for fixing the wifi on the 4s, none of them work! So, who can tell me why my iPhone 4S cannot find any wifi when it used to find wifi, and when it does find a wifi network it can never connect? You think apple would have a clue how to fix it! Because turning the wifi on and off doesn't work, resorting network settings doesn't work, even restoring phone to factory default doesn't work...
Did not work. I've selected iMessage to ON and left it. After a few hours I recieved a message "activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again". This has been going on for the past 3 days.

I plug my iphone 3gs into my laptop and it no longer syncs with my iTunes. I've tried all the trouble shooting methods and nothing works. My iPhone doesn't appear on iTunes or under "My Computer." Does anyone know how to fix this?
If AMDS is running, you are using a USB port directly on the computer and not a hub, you have disconnected other USB devices except keyboard and mouse, you have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925, You have tried cleaning the connector on the bottom of the phone, you have tried a different cable, you have installed the latest USB drivers for your computer, you have disabled your antivirus and firewall, you are running as an Administrator account and you have tried creating a new user on your computer and connected when logged in as that user then you have exhausted my knowledge. The only other thing to try is a different computer. If it isn't recognized on a different computer you have a hardware problem. Good luck!

I am trying to update my apps on my 4s but says there is not enough space. It shows i have 19.3 GB of 25 GB. Also, in my itunes...it shows about a quarter of space on the bar is photos but I took all the photos out. Don't make sense.
It's telling you there's not enough space *on your 4S*. The 25GB you refer to is probably that on iCloud, that's different memory than that on your iPhone. You need to delete video, pictures, apps, or whatever ON THE IPHONE, to make enough room for downloading updates to your apps.

Is there a way to manually manage apps? I have lots of apps that I don't want on my iphone all the time, but I don't want to delete them from my itunes account permanently.
Deleting apps on your phone does not remove them from your account. They can be re-downloaded for free from the App Store, or synced from your computer as needed.
The easiest way to manage apps is to connect to iTunes on your computer, go to the Apps page of your device in iTunes, select which apps to remove, then sync. -
I am running FCE 2.0.3. I recently updated to 10.4.9 and QT 7.1.5. Of course I got caught by the dropping frames bug.
I saw the apple article regarding capturing to to some FireWire-based storage devices. I am capturing directly to the internal HD.
Has upgrading to FCE HD 3.5 worked / failed for anybody?murraymac -

Just go to System Preferences. In the Spotlight item add the drive you want privacy on. But I'm afraid that will stop spotlight from indexing that drive - it will have to rebuild the index when you turn it back on.
But it worked for me!

Can not start up on my Macbook pro. All I get is a grey spinning wheel. Tried all the Startup key combinations and nothing works. I reset the NVRAM and nothing. I booted with start up disk , ran disk repair and all is ok. Tried to re-install OS but when I get to designating drive its blank. When I go to startup disk there is a "?" mark. When I restart under startup disk search for a drive it still comes up with nothing. Before I got the grey spinning wheel I had a locked screen. Could not move curser or click on anything. Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!
Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.

Thanks! I called Apple, and we did a software update. While the phone now will light up and work for about 30 seconds before going dark again, the representative said I would probably get a replacement phone if I took it in. You are right - probably a hardware failure!

My phone randomly shut off. When I turned it back on it said it needed to restore, to plug it into itunes. When I did, and tried to restore it, it failed with a code 21. I have followed all the instructions, it still isn't working. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all that the steps told me to, I've updated everything in my computer. I don't know what else to do. My phone will just show the apple sign and the itunes plug in sign.

My iMac freezes when saving a document in Word 2004
