Apple currently do not allow you to redownload purchases without good reason eg fault affecting syncing back to iTunes, and then you have to request via iTunes support.
You may not like the syncing model, but it's how they designed it - for convenience you can buy on AppleTV and keep the item there to play when the computer is off, but AppleTv is expected to be in sync with iTunes which officially means a copy in iTunes media folder. If the folder is on a laptop or computer with limited storeage yes, this can be a bind, but you have other options:
1 - Move your library to an external drive and sync/stream from there.
2 - Keep library where it is, but store actual media files on an external (some or all).
3 - Delete the files manually from the file system once they've synced back so itunes thinks they're still there - crucial to make a backup of these files elsewhere first - they won't sync back from AppleTv again, and if AppleTv fails you're stuck.
Personally I would let them sync back to iTunes, ensure you make a backup somewhere (external or DVDs) then make a copy on an external drive and add them to itunes having altered Prefs not to copy to media folder. They will sit on this external and be available to sync when this is connected, once synced you can remove external and they should stay on AppleTV. You will only need to reconnect to store/sync different items on the external.
Do not rely on AppleTv as the only copy, as it will eventually fail or fill up.
If you delete the items from within iTunes they will disappear from AppleTv at next sync.

I just updated my iPhone 4 to iOS6. In the process, I ran into a problem and had to restore factory settings. After syncing the phone, I see that 218 apps need to be updated. When selecting "update all," it says "Cannot Download. There is not enough available local storage to download these items. You can manage your local device storage usage in Settings."
How can this be the case when I haven't changed any apps from before updrading to iOS6, and I don't have any music yet on the phone? Why is it telling me there is not enough local space?Hi RileyAvaCadenRiver,
If you recently updated your iPhone to iOS7, you will need to update iTunes on your computer to iTunes 11.1 or newer for it to correctly recognize the iPhone. You may find the following link helpful:

My Iphone4S was in the middle of updating its latest software then suddenly it switched off, it hasnt turned on since and I've tried to reset it but only the apple sign appears then the plug into ittnes symbol. I've tried to plug it into itunes but it says my phone is on repair mode which is why it needs to be restored first in order to connect to itunes. I have also then tried to restore it but the error sign appears.

Since iOS 7.1 my phone won't turn on and is asking me to connect to iTunes. I connect to itunes and it says it needs to be restored. Not sure why. I try to restore it and then it says something went wrong and it won't work. So I've been without my phone for a couple days now. It gives me error code (29). The phone almost reboots and then 3/4 of the way through it gives me the error message.

Hey saandyy,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
You can try to restart the iPhone to exit recovery mode.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.

On 2 occasions my iphone has come up with the message that it needs to be restored to factory settings, but on trying to do this, itunes displays the message that it is unable to restore phone due to unknown error. Any tips?
Unless you have a jailbroken phone that has altered the baseband, that usually a hardware failure, in which case you'll have to take it to the Apple store for evaluation.

So a couple of months ago, I had to restore my new IPOD 5 TOUCH because i had forgotten the password and disabled it, so as you can imagine I am quite familiar with restoring it.
(The last time I had synced it was the only time that I had to restore it when I first got it when I had disabled it)
This morning I wanted to sync my ipod. So I plugged my ipod into my WINDOWS computer and waited for itunes to open, and it did just like it is supposed to. It then said itunes needed the latest update so i continued with updating it. Itunes updated, but then said that my ipod needed the latest software. I said "ok update" and thats when itunes made my ipod into DFU mode without me even touching it.
SOOOO as you can imagine I was quite upset. I then have realized that because Itunes had moved it into DFU mode on its own, I could not manually get my ipod out of DFU mode so the only thing i was left to do was go ahead and restore it. (correct me if Im wrong)
My huge issue right now is that my ipod NEEDS to be restored, but it only stays on the "connect to itunes" screen for approximatley 20 seconds and then turns black as if it has been turned off. When I plug it into my computer and turn it on to the "connect to itunes" mode, it does open it in itunes and starts "extracting sofftware" but then when it turns black after 20 seconds, it closes out because my computer thinks it has turned off.
I have tried charging it, and nothing has progressed. Im not sure if anything can be done for it right now, or if I could bring it to an apple store to fix it... it's brand new about 3 months old.
HELP and some advice would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks!

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My ipod needs to be restore and I get a error message saying :ipod software update server coud not be contacted.
Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then tap Settings > General > Software Update
No data is lost due to a reset. -
Someone please help me, i really dont want to restore my iphone as i have really important things on it, the phone has not been backed up in a long while..
i dont know how this happend but i was trying to update tmy iphone like 2 days ago but the update didnt end up completing due to the battery percentage being below 50, anyways i ignored the update and thought id do it later, yesterday i got notifications saying that the phone will continue the update and restart in a few minutes or something along those lines i had the option to click restart later or something like that so i clicked on that, later on my phone died and i put it on charge, as it was turning on the apple logo came up with the dowload bar underneath it, you know when you update or restore your phone and it loads, it was like that, it was taking forever, like it took so long that i removed my phone from the charger and it just froze for a bit then turned off, when i tried turning it on again it told me to connect to itunes so i did and now its telling me that my phone is recovery mode and it needs to be restored!! Is there any way i could fix this problem without restoring my phone?
