If exporting images for backup, to reimport into a clean aperture or other program, is it best to use 72 dpi or 300 dpi, or does it matter?

If exporting images for backup, to reimport into a clean aperture or other program, is it better to use 72 dpi or 300 dpi, or does it matter?  I want the best quality for any future unforeseen use.

I am somewhat reluctant to answer your questions after Frank Caggiano's excellent advice, but I really do not like to leave the question open, for there will be many occasions when you will need to export images and to understand how it works.
But please, follow Frank's advice, right now you do not need to worry about pixels and dpi. That is exactly what I meant, when I suggested to you to make sure you keep a copy of your Aperture Library and to back it up with all your other data, before you erase your disk for a clean reinstall.
DPI revisited:
So, is the dpi setting only for exporting to print?
The dpi settings are necessary to define the size of a digital image, since pixels don't have any dimensions. And since you cannot print or display an image without knowing its width and height, you will need to specify dpi when you are printing or scanning.
If I leave it at the default 72dpi will there be any problems getting quality prints in the future from jpeg versions exported with that setting?
Not if you export with the original size - the maximum number of pixels available. That will ensure the maximum print quality.
The dpi settings are required to export versions; versions are derived from the masters and new image files are computed. When you export masters you get a copy of the original file that already may have a dpi setting.
If I choose "export masters", will aperture will export my masters just as they are?
yes, and  you may add IPICT data if you choose
Pardon my thick skull--I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks in this digital world!
No apologies necessary, we were all beginners once
Here is another example, maybe that helps a little:
I exported an image (jpeg) with three different setting: export masters, a version with 72dpi, a version with 300dpi and inspected the files in Graphic Converter:
The master was exported like this:
Notice, the master had already dpi settings, although I did not specify any on export.
The size is 51,48 cm x 38,61 cm.
The 72 dpi Version has larger dimensions, but also 10 Megapixels.
and here the 300 dpi version: smaller dimensions, same amount of pixels.

Same here. I've never had trouble with this function before.
It opens the Photoshop application with all the menus/windows, but it never opens the actual image I chose to work on.

  • Which register cleaner or tune up software is the best to use for windows vista, windows 7 and windows 8.1 as professional?

    hi,
I like to know wich register cleaner or tune up software is the best to use for windows vista- windows7- and windows 8.1.
I like to know the proffesional  version of it which I can use for my clients  every where  unlimitted to clean unwanted keys  of registry and improve performance.(specialy in Dutch language).
    thanks

I second what Kate Li said.  There's no need for a registry cleaner!  Don't do it! I run Windows systems for years and they keep running as light and fast as when they're new.
What I *do* recommend is regularly reviewing the list of programs set to run in the background using a tool to show you what starts in various ways called Autoruns, which can be found here:

This tool can be used to disable things you don't need.

  • Can you export images which have been pasted into an Illustrator document as separate files?

I have a multi-page Illustrator document (over 50 artboards) which contains lots of images that are all saved within the document (not linked in from seperate files) and all the images need to be exported as separate image files (similar to when you package a file in Indesign). The problem is the files are not linked, they are all saved within the document.
Want to avoid having to copy + paste every image into a new document in Photoshop and save individually as this will take forever.

Save the document as a PDF and Open in Photoshop. Select only the Images in the Open dialog and proceed from there.

  • How to increase UIImage DPI taken from iPad Mini from 72 DPI to 300 DPI for OCR Scanning?

We are trying to get an accurate ocr scanning for MRZ using tesseract libraries. However we are getting incorrect results specially with character M (which usually comes out as H).
As going thru numerous blogs, the suggestion is to have a higher DPI image (300 dpi), but the image captured by IPAD Mini is only 72dpi. Can increasing the resolution provide better result. In which case, help in conversion to 300dpi will be greatly appreciated.
Is there an alternate solution for this issue that we are facing.

You are in the Using iPhone forum. I will ask the hosts to move this to the iPad forum. However, I'm not aware of any setting change you can make to the cameras in the iPad or iPhone.

  • Exporting images for print labs - colorsync question

    Hi All,
This is more a generic question - not pertaining to Aperture specifically, but photo workflow in general.
When exporting pictures to print at a lab (like Costco, Ritz, Smugmug, etc), what Colorsync profile should be set in the Export Version options? sRGB is the profile Smugmug recommends, but I also have the choice of their specific ICC profiles.
Also, how does Aperture run on the 20" iMac? I've really never gotten into printing pictures, but now I have two clients that will pay me for taking pictures! They're giving me enough money to purchase my own copy of Aperture, along with an iMac. Not enough for a dual-G5 with monitor, but if it makes a big difference, I'll throw in the extra money myself.
    Thanks,
    Robert

When exporting pictures to print at a lab (like
Costco, Ritz, Smugmug, etc), what Colorsync profile
should be set in the Export Version options? sRGB is
the profile Smugmug recommends, but I also have the
choice of their specific ICC profiles.
IF you have the specific output profile for the device, use that. You’ll have control over the rendering intent (well if you do the conversions in Photoshop, in Aperture, you’re “stuck” with Relative Colorimetric which usually works fine). You can control Black Point Compensation (keep it on) and at least in Adobe products, use the ACE CMM which has proven over the years to be stable and bug free.
The only output device that can produce sRGB is a CRT display in a specific condition. The output devices above do not produce sRGB but instead assume/expect sRGB so a conversion can take place upon output. That can work but you have no idea of how the image will appear (soft proof), and you have no control over the conversions or post conversion editing. Assuming you have a good output profile for the device, convert using it, then send to the lab. But BE SURE they are ICC aware and are not expecting sRGB. There are some output profiles for such devices floating around the web, but you don’t know that the lab is expecting the file that way. If however, they do provide you an output profile for their device, you can be pretty sure they will know what to do with the files for output to their device.

  • Problems with image names when exporting - images that have come back into lightroom from photoshop

Can anyone help ? When I need to take an image from lightroom into photoshop then back into lightroom and then I export that image, the original file number disappears and is replaced by dashes. Does anyone know how to solve this ?
    Thanks !

The appearance of dashes usually suggests some kind of pre-set e.g.

The only suggestion I can make is that you check to ensure you are using the correct parameters in the templates manager.

  • What resolution to export images for projection?

I am trying to figure out what to set the tage parmaeters in Foto Magico for a slideshow to be projected. The only information I have about the projector is that "images are generally best at 1050 on thier longest side." Not very helpful. I have multiple dimensions - 4:3, square, etc. Just trying to figure out what to set the stage to so I can create an export parameter fpr my images at 1050 on longest side still have some black around. The only info I can find is HD resolution, which I don't want as it seems to be cropping my 4:3 images. Any thoughts or FM users?
    thanks
    Nancie

I agree it isn't very helpful...but that is all I have been told. Still trying to fiond out what the projector resolution is.
I am using a fit within...but everything I am reading about projectors tells me I should be able to use higher resolution for a projector. This is more of a Foto Magico question as it pertains to images coming from Aperture.
It is less the image resolution and more the slideshow settings I am trying to figure out. Maybe this is not the right place to post...  Thanks Frank.

I have an icloud backup prompt upon my ipad and it won't respond to "OK" It is freezing up other commands. How do I remove it?

    Hi MrsMoosie,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iPad. If your iPad isn't responding or doesn't appear to be charging, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful, in particular the following portion:
If you don't see the charging screen within an hour, or you see the connect to power screen, check your connector, USB cable, and power adapter. Make sure that everything is plugged in firmly, free of debris, and not damaged. You might want to try a different USB cable or power adapter.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support

  • Getting pissed.  My jpeg is not showing up for me to post on Twitter or facebook or other programs!

What the freak is going on?  Why am I having issues finding my jpeg to post on twitter, facebook or pull up into another program?  It only shows up in my photoshop program.
If the cloud service makes my jpegs only available for photoshop.  Then I will be canceling this nonsense.

Open that photo in Photoshop again. Right-click on the file's tab and choose "reveal in Explorer."
That should tell you where the file really is.
Once you know, you should be able to upload it navigating to that directory.
If you have the CC Desk app, just open it, sign in, and under the Files tab, click Open Folder.
Your Explorer window should show the file if it was saved or moved there, and there should be a cloud symbol under the Favorites pane in your Explorer window.  If for example, you want to upload a file to Twitter, the Open dialog should have the cloud directory.

  • Website ical feed not importing into ical (but works in other programs)

We have a website that contains timetables, and publish ical (.ics) feeds for users so that they can import their timetables into their own calendar software. We have a few users who are saying that ical will not import our site's ics feed. Either just one event (of many) gets imported or none of them do. We've imported these feeds into google calendar, sunbird & outlook without any problems, and have ran this same user's feed through an ical validation tool and it passes without any errors or warnings.
Where can I find out what iCal is having trouble with? Is there an error log somewhere I can get the users to access? Are there any parts of the ics format that ical is particularly flaky with? How can I find out what's wrong? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
    thanks

I'm having this problem too... can't figure out what is wrong.
Outlook & Google Calendar can import it
    It validates according to:
    http://severinghaus.org/projects/icv/
If there is only one event iCal accepts it, but if there are more than one, it gives an error message (a very unhelpful one at that).

  • HT4914 HOTMAIL GIVES 25GB OF ONLINE STORAGE FOR FREE!!!! IS THERE NO OTHER PROGRAM THAT GIVES YOU AS MUCH ONLINE STORAGE FOR FREE?

I'm tired of apple charging so much for something so abundant. Server space, both personal and belonging to apple, should not cOst their customers so much!  After all we did pay a lot for our devices.

Why would someone pay for something they can create, a remote network storage device, when they don't have to. It just takes a little effort.  That's why apples phones are made so simplistic with no accessible file structure, apple assumes an idiot will be using it.

  • What are the best export settings for a HD video in Premier Pro CS4?

    Hi!
I've been having so much trouble with this issue and it's something that continually frustrates my boss. I have a HD video the settings for it are
    FPS 23.98
    1920 x 1080, then a few lines down it says 1408 x 792
    16 bit,
    2 channels
    48000 Hz
What should the settings be when I make a new sequence?
When I look at it in the window in Premiere Pro I have to contantly 'shrink' the image to fit the window, is that something I should be doing or does it indicate the sequence settings are incorrect?
But more importantly what should the export settings be? I exported a 4 minute long video and the size was 1 GB, I know that's too big.
I need to export it without loosing any quality and export another one that meets the Youtube and Vimeo limits on size.
Vimeo is 500 MB per week, sometimes I upload 4 videos per week. I think Youtube you can only upload 500 MB at a time.
I need to get smaller sizes with loosing the least amount of quality possible AND the best export settings for quality, so I guess I have 3 separate questions-
What are the best sequence settings for HD video?
What are the best export settings for HD without loosing any quality?
What are the best export settings for the size to come out around 500 MB with loosing the least amount of quality possible?
    Thank You!
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/713070
On the above thread I used the 5th anwer, and it's going to take about 7 hours to export a 4 minute video :/

    It Stands for "Coder Decoder."
Your format is like a container for your video file. Certain containers can hold certain codecs and not others. Other containers can hold other codecs. Sometimes different containers can hold the same codecs.
This might be a bad analogy but I'll give it a try.
A coffe cup (container) can hold pretty much any liquid you drink, where a red solo cup (container) won't hold scolding water. So, the coffe cup would be your container of choice most likely because it has the most options for liquids (codecs). But, you might want a red solo cup for just a single crappy beer at a party (a moderate quality streaming video on the web). In that case, you don't need all the optoins of another container.
In Premiere Pro CC H.264 is a Container and the Codec in one option. This has been streamlined for web distrobution of video to be played in browsers without things like Flash or special players.
Were as if you choose the QuickTime Container there are over 40 codec optoins (at least on my machine with additinal ones installed) but you may run into an issue where your browser doesn't support QuickTime playback.
I would say that your container is for compatability with players and your codec is taken into consideration when looking at the quality of the compression.
Yesteraday I wrote a blog entery on Exporting from Premiere Pro and found that the MPEG-4 codec inside of the QuickTime container gave me much richer colors than the H.264 container/codec option.

  • Exporting images looks really bad!

    Forum,
I am exporting images for a slideshow to make in DVD Studio Pro for my final outputted project.
The problem is that the images look really choppy and very bad. They look interlaced.
I'm working with NTSC DV. Is this normal?
Would it help is I made a Freeze Frame in FCP, then exported it as an image?
    System:
    OS X 10.4.5
    FCP 5.0.4
    QT 7.0.4
    Thanks

hi fcp - I take them straight off the tl and go into photoshop with them to tidy them up. Use the deinterlace filter in ps.
