If FCPX can output (render) in H.264, then why use Compressor-4?

When I "share" (output) to-compressor and C4 was launched, I noticed (for blu-ray H.264) that I can ADJUST the bitrate slider up to 30 Mbps.  Now this would be a good reason to use C4 if FCPX has no bitrate adjustment for output.
I'm creating a 20 min blu-ray and would like to maximize the bit rate.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If FCP X does all that you need then use it.
Compressor will usually give you more options.

  • Why can't I export my FCP 6 sequence using Compressor 3?

    I am wondering if anyone can tell me why I can't export my FCP 6 sequence using Compressor 3.0.5.
    I have an hour-long 1080p Pro Res 422 sequence that I am trying to export using Compressor 3.  Whether I export using the 'Pro Res 422' preset or the 'H.264' preset, transcoding commences but then stops abruptly 15 to 20 minutes later with an error message saying 'Quicktime Error: -50.'
    For what it's worth, I have an early-2008 dual quad-core Mac Pro desktop with 6 GB of RAM and two ATI Radeon 5770 graphics cards.  I am currently running OS X 10.6.8.  The media (including Motion graphics) and project file are on an external drive connected via Firewire 800.
    Any advice on how to properly export this sequence at the highest quality without getting the error message is greatly appreciated!
    Shaun

    Are you "sending" to compressor?  Probably not the best way to work.
    First step:  make sure the sequence is COMPLETELY rendered.  If you don't understand how to do that, post back.
    Then, I'd strongly recommend that you export a quicktime file with current settings (file:  export:  quicktime movie NOT quicktime conversion) and bring that file into compressor and chose the appropriate preset.
    This workflow isolates each step and makes it easier to troubleshoot.

  • How can I export a surround sound movie file using compressor?

    I want to create movie files using Motion and Soundtrack Pro that have surround sound. I can make ac3 surround sound files in SOundtrack Pro, I can add them to projects in Final Cut Pro, but I can't see any way to use Compressor to output the movie files with surround sound. The encoding results in plain stereo files. Please help.

    HI Tony, you should be able to do this simply within the Compressor.app V4.1.x using the "surround Sound Group" and the shipped setting DOLBY DIGITAL setting. Instead of just adding a file, you need to:
    Add a "Surround Sound Group" (control++i or file/add surround sound group or use the "+" plus sign at bottom left corner of Current/BATCH window". You'll get  a pane with the channels you need to manipulate.
    Click on the tracks Icons L to Rs and  select the surround tracks as prompted and navigate through the finder interface. .. simple. WAV, BWF etc
    Optionally Add the video object from here too.
    Select the BATCH job (top layer with the ORBIT looking icon)) and use the INSPECTOR (right pane) to see what audio objects have been selected and verify location etc.. follow the dialogue (follow your nose)
    Then Select the SETTING layer and use the default DOLBY DIGITAL setting and form the "settings/Create Blu Ray/Dolby Digital" and drag it over the batch job setting
    Select this and adjust the LOCATION for the target distribution
    Select the INSPECTOR AUDIO pane (right pane) and adjust any settings and EFFECTS to your taste.
    select the cluster (if one is defined)
    +B (submit) the job for the distribution or another master.
    This will work fine.. pretty easy..  You'll need to work the audio settings as you like. If you get stuck, use the compressor.app V4.1 help.. its actually good.
    Post your results for others to see.

  • FCPX Project Render Settings - Can you edit in h.264 and Transcode/render only used clips on timeline to Prores during render?

    I have a question on the PROJECT RENDER settings in FCP X. It’s seems to me that one could theoretically import and edit entirely with original h.264 video files without needing to Transcode to ProRes422. Once you’re done with your edit and want to get the added benefits of COLOR GRADING in ProRes422 color space, it seems that FCPX will automatically render your edit in ProRes422 according to these preferences. In that case, a color grade could be applied to the whole edit, and be automatically transcoded/rendered into ProRes 422 during the render process. After rendering, what would show up on the viewer and what would EXPORT would be the rendered Prores files and not the original h.264 files. This saves a lot of time and space of transcoding ALL your media, and in theory should enable you to edit NATIVE video formats like h.264, with automatic benefits of ProRes during render.  I'm assuming the render may take longer because FCPX is having to convert h.264 video files to ProRes422 while rendering. This may be one drawback. But will you your color grade actually use the 4:2:0 color space of the h.264 native media, or will it utilize 4:2:2 color space, since the render files are set to render to ProRes422 ? Can anyone please confirm that this theory is correct and optimal for certain work flows?? Thanks!

    Thanks Wild. That's what I thought - in that the render files would be converted to ProRes422 codec. So do you or anyone else think that there is an advantage to having the 4:2:0 original file be processed in a 4:2:2 color space?
    Yes there is an advantage, any effects and grading will look better than in a 4:2:0 space.
    Most professionals online seem to think so. Also - will rendering of heavy effects and color grading take longer using this method because it's having to convert h.264 media to ProRes during render?
    Yes, it will definitely take longer.
    Can anyone verify from a technical standpoint whether editing and color grading in this workflow will see the same benefits as having transcoded the h.264 media to ProRes in the first place?
    Same benefits from a final product view point, you lose on rendering time though and if you have lots of effects things will seem slow as it will have render everytime from the h264 file rather than a Pro Res file for every change you make. This may be fine on a higher end mac but I'm sure just pummels an older lower end mac as to being almost useless.

  • After Effects CC Render Error H.264

    Win 7x64
    Adobe After Effects CC 2014 13.0.2
    QuickTime Pro 7.7.6 installed
    I'm IT. Not a day to day user of CC Products.
    I have a client (Uni) that is having trouble rendering in After Effects H.264 with complex renders. Basic 'simple, single image' renders work without issue. And the error output is set to 'errors only'  yet nothing spits out. Users are Standard Users.
    Where is a jumping off point to decipher what is breaking?

    That's nice.
    But from your initial query, it's difficult to know whether this person is importing h.264 footage or trying to render h.264 footage.  H.264 footage used in AE can cause problems with certain effects, and it is NEVER a good idea to render to h.264.
    So this could be an operator error rather than a system error.
    So I tell you what, Mr. IT Guy -- go buttonhole this person, put your heads together, and answer the litany of diagnostic questions you'll find here:
    FAQ: What information should I provide when asking a question on this forum?
    Between the two of you, you'll have a much better chance of coming to the root of the problem... but separately?  That's a crap shoot.

  • How to speed up render to h.264 in CS6? Adobe QT32 Server.exe causes long delay

    (Before you say "Don't use AE to render to h.264; use AME!" – I'd love to, but AME isn't controllable from the command line / batch files the way aerender.exe is)
    When I try to render a brain dead simple composition (30 seconds, black background with the word "DUMMY" centered), aerender takes nearly four minutes to complete. This is a Windows Server 2012 box with 32 CPUs (16 cores+16 HT), about ~60GB of memory and I believe it's on 10Gb ethernet. Turning multi-processing off doesn't have effect on the pause.
    If I view the task in task viewer, NO CPU is being used and Adobe QT32 Server.exe is running. Analyzing the wait chain for aerender.exe says that a thread is waiting for network i/o to complete (I assume this is Adobe QT32 Server.exe, which uses TCP to talk to Quicktime). After about three minutes, the render continues (and goes blazingly quick, as expected).
    WTF?
    How can I get around this long, useless pause? Is there an alternative h.264 output module that doesn't use Quicktime?
    Thanks in advance!

    The flaw is here:
    This is a Windows Server 2012 box
    Adobe desktop programs are generally not officially supported on server operating systems. Whatever issues you have are probably due to things like local users vs. network users, disk quota, specific group policies or plain and simple another process occupying or blocking the same port that the QT server is using. In any case, this is nothing we can figure out for you. You have to sit down and work your way through the server's administration tools, turn off stuff, change user permissions. Check the event logs for conflicting processes or use tools like Sysinternals' Process Monitor or Wireshark to track down port collisions and otehr problems.

  • How do you FORCE FCPx to re-render a clip?

    here's the problem.
    Final Cut Pro X FREQUENTLY screws up transition renders. Did I say FREQUENTLY? It CANNOT be stressed enough, that FCPx DOES SOMETHING BAD to its transition renders Quite Often.
    ok, until Apple fixes that nightmare, I want a workaround. I thought I had it:
    if you hit control+r you tell FCPx to 'render selection.'  its right there in the menu.
    but its a lie. what it SHOULD read in the menu is: 'render selection, if it is not already marked as having been rendered.'  This is a problem for me, because FCPx FREQUENTLY SCREWS UP TRANSITION RENDERS*.
    *ok, I think I've said it enough, time for an example:
    imagine a crossfade, standard, stock crossfade, using the standard timing... EVERYTHING is standard. Well, How would you feel if you were scrubbing an otherwise perfect edit... to find that your crossfades... ALL OF THEM... pop the resulting image, into the first frame of the transition? I bet you'd be mad.
    How would you feel if you HAD NO RELIABLE WAY TO FORCE FCPx TO RE-RENDER THOSE TRANSITIONS?  You'd be livid. Lets put some more firewood on here... How would you feel if this happened randomly, all the time?  I really do mean ALL THE TIME. I can scarcely look at FCPx without it screwing up the transitions of my edit.
    point is. FCPx has a wonderful editor. its a joy to use. But its chock FULL of bugs, and its so SMUG that it doesn't provide ANY workarounds. The Documentation is a joke. So I'm here... trying to find a way To FORCE FCPx to re-render something IT thinks is already rendered. the smug jerk.

    OP here.
    I'd like to make a few comments.
    Apple has been slowly fixing critical bugs in FCPx, I'm happy with the direction things are headed. But we still have a long way to go.
    the "delete Project Render Files" option is a late edition, and I "think" it is meant to address this specific issue. I find however that in practice, it introduces as many problems as it solves. deleting the project render files forces a re-render on the entire timeline, and as stated way back in the OP, FCPX screws up transition renders.
    Let me dig into that a little bit. Randomly, FCPx will cut out the first frame of a transiton, creating a jarring full frame jump (as it skips to the second frame) just at the front of a transition, and fill the last frame with black. All I want to do at this maddening point is force FCPX to re-render specific parts of the show, one at a time, because if I ask it to render the other stuff, invariably I will be subjected to the same amount of render bugs I am trying to eliminate. (or more) FCPX does this randomly, so if I can force it to re-render only a specific segment, there's a chance it won't render that bit incorrectly. And with finite control, I can step through and fix each transition, forcing as many re-renders as necessary, always getting closer to done, rather than starting from scratch at every step.
    so, the tip is appreciated, it just doesn't answer my needs. I like FCPX, and sometimes its a dream but it is still riddled with critical bugs and the lack of percision control over the system is a design flaw, IMHO.

  • Adobe Media Encoder can´t render out AE Ray-Trace Composition

    Hey,
    AME can´t render out my composition (or sequence if i include the comp in a PP sequence) which includes some 3D stuff.
    I am able to render it out in AE in a few minutes, preview it easily in AE and even in PP but i´m not able to render it out in AME or PP.
    AME says it would take like 10+ Hours to render it and doesn´t come to an end.
    I tried multiple encoding settings but nothing worked.
    Also i checked, that cuda rendering is enabled in all my Adobe programs, but nothing helped...
    AE File .aep :
    Dropbox - Twitch Infovideo.aep
    AME .epr Preset for encoding :
    Dropbox - Media Encoder Error Test.epr
    Thanks for helping,
    Johannes

    It raises another question: what settings do I need to encode the comp in 720p resolution without taking up lots of space?
    Well, it depends on whether you need a production master (something for broadcast, for example, or to use as a source for other encoding tasks) or if you want a version for distribution. If it's the former, there's nothing wrong with "lots of space" - A Quicktime file with PNG or Animation codec is a good idea, but it will take a lot of space. If it's the latter, H264 is perfect but there's no built-in preset to take 720 material to the web.
    You could do this:
    * Pick the generic H264 template. You'll see that it will give an error if you attempt to render, because the default setting uses an H264 profile/level which doesn't let you use HD resolutions.
    * In the H264 video options, set the "Profile" menu to "Main" and "Level" to 4.0. That will keep it compatible to Quicktime and Flash player, while allowing larger frame sizes and higher bit rates.
    * Set Target Bitrate to 5-8 Mbps and Maximum Bitrate to 9-10 Mbps if you're targetting web delivery. That's a bit over what Apple uses for 720p content on the Apple TV, for example.
    The H264 original preset will instruct you in the comment field to stretch to 640x480 in Output Module. There's no need, since you are using a profile/level combination which allows higher frame sizes.

  • After effects cs5 output render??????????????????????????????

    can anybody help?
    ive downloaded the trial version of after effects and when i try to render the comp out , in the output module ,theres on option for MPEG2-DVD.
    it says on the adobe site that in the past ,older CS packages didnt give all the output render options but cs5 and onwards are ment to give them????
    Why is it not in there???
    and tried down loading it again but it was still the same?
    can anyone please help as i allways render out in this format,,,thankyou

    You are not telling su anything. If you think something is wrong then we need more info about your system. The output modules not appearing can be any nomber of causes from your system having concurrent CoDecs installed to older Adobe products locking those CoDecs.

  • Can't render effects in FCP7 for ALL-INTRA video shot on GH3

    I can't render effects on FCP 7 for footage shot on a Panasonic GH3 camera.
    Original files are shot in ALL-INTRA mov files 1920x1080, 25p format. Original files are H-264, and are imported without conversion, edited on  Easy Setup HD XDCAM HD 1080p25.
    I can render effects on the timeline, but there is massive breakup when I export the edit.
    Exporting raw files, without special effects is OK.
    Any suggestions?

    That camera shoots AVCHD...not AVCIntra. Only P2 cameras shoot AVCIntra.
    "Original files are H-264, and are imported without conversion"
    That's your problem.  FCP doens't work with H.264 well.  YOu need to convert the footage to ProRes, and use a ProRes timeline.

  • If I imported proxy media to edit in fcpx, can I export a hight resolution (apple pro res 422 (hq)) version of the project ?

    If I imported proxy media to edit in fcpx, can I export a hight resolution (apple pro res 422 (hq)) version of the project ?

    OK, let me re-answer here.  You HAVE to have either original or optimized media, you can not have Proxy only media, when using FCPX's inport options.  You will switch between which FCPX is using; in 10.1 via the Canvas menu option called "Media", or in 10.0.9 and earily via the Preference's "Playback" settings.
    When set to Proxy, FCPX only references that medai, which is 1/4 resolution, and not full quality.  When set to Original Or Optimized, you'll get full resolution output, as FCPX is not referencing those files.
    The only way to have Proxy only media is to convert it in Compressor and then import that.  And that would just be a huge mistake.

  • How can I render an active link (yrl) within a UIX/XML page

    How can I render an active link (url) within a UIX/XML page.
    How can I get <jbo:ShowValue> to work in UIX/XML, or is there another way?
    Bill G...

    It may seem strange, but the <contents> of <rawText> aren't actually
    raw - it's only the "text" attribute that's raw. (It seems strange because
    it is. Ah well.) This is different from UIX JSP.
    So, try something like the following:
    <bc4j:attrScope name="Notes">
    <contents>
    <rawText text="&lt;a href=&quot;"/>
    <rawText>
    <boundAttribute name="text">
    <bc4j:attrProperty name="value"/>
    </boundAttribute>
    </rawText text="&quot;&gt;"/>
    Some text in the link.
    <rawText text="&lt;/a&gt;"/>
    </contents>
    <bc4j:attrScope>
    Thankfully, this will be much simpler in 9.0.3, when the following
    will work:
    <link text="Whatever you want">
    <boundAttribute name="destination">
    <bc4j:attrValue name="Notes"/>
    </boundAttribute>
    </link>

  • Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?

    Q: Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?
    FAQ revised 25 April 2009
    Ans: Prior to version 1.3 Lightroom did not support 1:1 preview rendering during import, the actual options for  Initial Previews being:  Embedded or  Standard. However, more recent versions allow four types of previews to be rendered during import (i.e.  Minimal, Embedded & Sidecar, Standard,and  1:1). It's also worth noting the following on Lightroom import behaviour:
    1.  Minimal (Lightroom default) or Embedded & Sidecar is by far the quickest method for getting your photos into the Lightroom catalog. However, the lack of Standard, which is the minimum that Lightroom can actually work with, means that the application will render standard-sized on demand (i.e. as thumbs/photos become visible within the photo Content area). Asking Lightroom to undertake this task at the same time as you're trying to use the application will result in sub optimal performance.
    2. Importing your photos with the  Standard preview selected within the Import dialog will take longer than 1 above, but on completion Lightroom will already have previews that match the minimum requirement for working in the Library. Assuming that you won't be looking at every image at 100% (i.e 1:1) then this preview size will allow you to quickly review, rate, label, even make quick colour/tone adjustments, etc the photos within the Library module. If you need to see a photo at 100% then Lightroom will render that preview on demand (while it's being rendered you'll see the "Rendering Preview" overlay appear at bottom of preview).  Note that when using a 23" or larger monitor it to is best to set the Standard sized previews so that they are rendered at 2048 pixels
    3. Importing your photos with the  1:1 preview size selected will result in Lightroom taking even longer to complete the import process than would have been the case if standard-sized had been chosen. 1:1 previews also take up significantly more disk space than standard-sized.
    If you're not going to be working on the photos immediately after import but do need to get them into Lightroom as quickly as possible, then the best option would be to choose import option 1. Once the photos have been imported choose either  Render Standard-sized Previews or  Render 1:1 previews from Library module Library>Previews menu.

    When I search these forums for "CFCopyFormattingDescription", I find a bunch of crash reports posted that look almost exactly the same as mine.  It appears there's a bug in iPhoto, perhaps when reading metadata from the JPG file (readRawTiffPropsFromPath).
    Interestingly, the Preview app can open and display the file just fine.  I even opened the inspector and it showed all of the TIFF and exif metadata just fine, no crash.  The file also opens just fine on Windows.
    Now how do we get the attention of the iPhoto development team so I can send them the photos, have them reproduce the crash, and fix it?
