If I backup my iPhone to iCloud, can I restore it without losing data after syncing with new computer/iTunes?

The laptop my phone was synced to broke, so I had up get a new computer. I know that if I try to sync my iPhone 4 (running iOS 6) to the new iTunes on the new computer I'll lose my data. I have everything backed up to iCloud. Could I restore my iPhone after syncing with the new iTunes?

  • How can I keep a playlist on phone when syncing with new computer?

When syncing my IPhone I am prompted with an ominous message that says "Are you sure you want to remove the existing music ... from this phone and sync with this ITunes library? Music .... will be removed and items will be synced from this ITunes library" The answer is no because I have a playlist I would like to keep on the phone, but add one which resides on the computer I am attempting to sync with. That is not an choice presented, the choices are Cancel or Remove and Sync. Apple should either give more options or at least a better explanation. I have synced this phone and computer combination before but have since created a new playlist in the computer (a Mac Mini).
So how can I keep a playlist on the phone and add one from the computer too? Is it possible to view the phone as a drive and move items around in that manner? I use ITunes on both Windows and Mac platforms but this issue has always been problem for me. I also have IPhone 3 (used as an IPod), IPhone 4S and Iphone 5.

Unless you can get the iPod backup file (and restore the iPod from that file on your new computer) from the "dead" computer you will lose all the app data you can export via email.
    - Yu can trabsfer iTnes purchases from the iPod by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - You can transfer non-itunes purchased music to the new computer by using one of the third-party programs discussed in this previous discussion.
    Best iPod to PC
    - After you move the stuff to the new computer, either restore the iPod from the backup, or if no backup, restore to factory defaults, new iPod and sync.

  • After syncing with new iMac I no longer have purchased ringtones on my iPhone. Any clue how to get them back?, After syncing with new iMac I no longer have purchased ringtones on my iPhone. Any clue how to get them back?

The ringtones purchased on iTunes simply disappeared from the iPhone 4S, were visible for a while on iTunes on the iMac, when the iPhone was connected but greyed out, I can't see it anymore though. I've tried to download it again from iTunes on the iPhone, but it only tells me "this item has been purchased before, would you like to buy it again?". Of course I don't want to pay twice something I've already paid for. Any idea how to get this fixed so I can use those ringtones again? Thanks in advance!

Uncheck them in the iTunes > Tones sync settings and sync, then check them again and sync.

  • I get "iPad disabled" message. Can I restore it without losing all my data? Can I restore it from a friend's iTunes account without messing up his account? If so, how?

My iPad turned on while it was in my suitcase and began playing through my iTunes music. I turned it off and can no longer turn it back on. I get a message "iPad disabled." How can I restore it without losing my data?  I'm using a friend's computer and am particularly concerned not to mess up his data (including his iTunes account).

You won't lose data, if you've been backing up your ipad on a regular basis.

If you restore you will have to restore to latest Apple's software, that frankly *****. I did it and I completely regret. On iOS 6.1.5 NOTHING works.

  • Need iPhone to sync with new computer...

My old iBook G4 has passed away and I need to sync up my iPhone with another older G4 iBook. I've attached the iPhone, however since the phone is "married" to another computer my option is to wipe the iPhone and start over. I'm wondering...is there a way around having to erase my current data on the iPhone and set up the iBook to, from this point on be the computer with which the phone is synced with? I was unable to obtain any information from the deceased iBook....i.e. any prefs, account info etc...
Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!!

An iPhone is only "married" to a single computer in regards to iTunes content and photos transferred to your iPhone. An iPhone can be synced with a single iTunes library only.
If you don't have a backup of your iTunes library and photos transferred to your iPhone from your previous computer, you have a problem.
iTunes includes an option to transfer content that was purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes Store only.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
If the Address Book is empty on this Mac, before syncing contact info enter one contact in the Address Book. Make one up if needed which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing contact info which you want to select. The same applies to iCal and syncing calendar events before syncing calendar events.

  • IPhone 4 won't sync with new computer

When I connect my iPhone 4 to my computer, music, movies, and apps don't sync to the phone from the computer. I just switched computers and this was the first sync with the new computer. I've tried syncing with this computer multiple times, but the only things still on the phone are contacts, apps from before the switch, and music I've bought within the past few days on the device. I was using a Mac OS X Snow Leopard (pretty sure) and the new computer is a Mac OS X Lion.

Just checked my iTunes, don't seem to be having this problem. Here is what I can recommend:
    Restart iTunes, it may help
    Restart Computer if 1 fails.
If you're on Mac, update to latest iTunes (released today)
Restart iPhone and then iTunes and then plug it in

  • If your Iphone 2 is disabled, how can you restore it without losing the contents? We know the right passcode.

We are trying to restore a disabled Iphone 3. It does not have active phone service, but is used for apps. We know the correct passcode but my son entered it wrong too many times and it disabled. The phone says to connect to ITunes but that is not working because of the passcode. Does anyone know how to restore the phone without losing the contents?

You will have to restore, losing anything not saved to your computer.

  • Will I lose my iPhone data when syncing to new computer?

    Hello --
I've dug through the archives here a little, and saw many issues with syncing an iPhone to a new computer. However, I was never able to find the answer I was looking for to my particular question.
I've had my iPhone for a good number of months now. I had to reformat my computer, and re-install iTunes last week (so it's not really a new computer, but for all intents and purposes, it might as well be.) I have yet to try to sync my iPhone to the computer out of fear I will lose all my data.
I'm not worried about the mp3s or ringtones, those are backed up in my library. However, my contacts, calendar data, photos I've taken -- I've got the sinking feeling that as soon as I hook up this phone to that computer, they will all get removed.
What can I do to ensure that my data won't be lost? Can I backup my phone somehow before syncing it to the computer?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, all.

    You're welcome.
So I am safe to continue to transfer music and movies to my phone, without harming my contacts so long as I keep those check boxes in the info tab unchecked? Correct?
Correct. Whatever you select to be synced or transferred from your computer to the iPhone via your iPhone sync preferences is synced or transferred and whatever is not selected is not synced or transferred. Some data is synced and some if just a transfer process from your computer to the iPhone.
Also, what do I do if I want to start syncing contacts now (to prevent this worry of mine in the future)? If I want to create a backup of my contacts right now, is that something I'd need to do manually? I can't just "download" my list of contacts from my phone to my computer, right?
Select the supported application on your computer for syncing contact information and calendar events with your iPhone. If this application or applications are void of any data, enter at least one contact in the supported address book application and one calendar event in the supported calendar application before syncing.
There is no way to backup this data on the iPhone.

  • Freeing HD space from iTunes without losing content during Sync with iPhone

    Hey, Y'all!
This is probably a common question — but I had some trouble finding a specific answer by a few attempts at searching. So please forgive any redundancy...
I desperately need to free HD capacity on my MacBook Pro, and parts of my iTunes Library would make good candidates. The entire home/Music folder is already backed-up to an ext. HD (more than 1x).
But I'd prefer to NOT lose whatever I delete from my MacBook Pro's HD when I sync with my iPhone 3Gs and my son's iPod Touch. Both devices have plenty of capacity for what they're holding currently.
How do I set up sync parameters to accomplish this using, e.g., the Music and Videos tabs in the iTunes interface with these devices? And when — do I alter these settings "before" doing the removals from my HD? The answers may be obvious, but unfortunately not to me.
Hope I've made sense in stating my questions. I'm using iTunes 8.2.1 (6) if that's a factor in this...
    Thanks for your help!

I finally found several errors that may all help you who may have the same problem. While each of these steps may or many not help you, here is what I did to achieve a resolution. I will provide the logic as much as I can.
    1. The problem is as above, unchange
Step 1: I made sure that my Mac (late 2008 unibody, running Mac OS X 10.8.2 with all recent updates) was infact working well. I verified and repaired permissions as well as verified and repaired my HD.
Step 2: I went through my iTunes app library and eliminated duplicates as well as apps that 'hung' (apps that would be updated but never leave the update screen- somehow these apps are duplicated- delete one of these to clean up your app update screen.
Step 3: Check for operating mode. You most likely need to run iTunes 11 on Mac OS X Mountain Lion (and possibly Lion) in 64 bit mode. Close iTunes and open your Applications folder. There select iTunes 11 and under the file menu- select Get info. See if your iTunes is running in 32 bit mode*. Uncheck this if 32 bit mode is selected. Close the window and restart Itunes. Try synching with your iPhone or Ipod (touch). This may work.
*Step 4: If you have 32 bit mode checked, think back to if you installed 3rd party plugins. I realized I have a legacy plugin for iToner that forced iTunes 11 to jump back from 32 bit and 64 bit modes. Check your iTunes plugins and either delete or backup/delete plugins.
After doing all this, my iTunes 11 and iPhone 5 started synching again.
I hope this helps. Whenever there are problems in upgrades, check 3rd party plugins! Check that folder to jog your memory!

  • 2 iPhones need to sync with new computer

I just purchased a new HP computer and downloaded iTunes but I need to know how to sync two iPhones to the new comp without losing all the data off the phones... Also, what is the easiest way to move my library to new computer?

Transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer along with all other important data from your old computer that you will need or want to access on your new computer such as documents, folders, etc. You can use the external drive that you use for backup purposes as long as the external drive has adequate storage capacity to store/transfer your entire iTunes library. You also need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes.

  • Can I restore my music from my ipod to a new computer?

I got a new computer, and fouled up the process of transferring the music from my old computer to my new one.  I managed to lose a lost of files, and also lost all the ratings and playlists that I'd painstakingly built up over several years.
However, occurs to me that my music is still safe on my synced ipod.  Can I delete itunes from my new computer and then reinstall and transfer it all back from my ipod to the computer?
In installing the computer, I've already deauthorised all the old computers and authorised the new one.
    Thanks.

I agree the term sync does somewhat give the wrong impression. I also know that most of us never really learn whether or not our backup strategies are good enough until we're called upon to use them in anger. Too often they fail.
A script is a program that hasn't been compiled into machine code but is instead interpreted at run time. There is less scope for a pretty front end but they can be just as functional. Mine tend to display one or more pop-up boxes to confirm that you want them to perform their task on the currently selected tracks, then if possible show a progress bar so you can see that they are working (and abort if needs be), and finally a summary screen shows what has been done. An advantage of distributing these programs as scripts is that others can repurpose them if they are so inclined.
If you copy your recovered media in to a new empty library then it won't have your playlists, ratings, playcounts etc. The two scripts I mention attempt to analyze all of the tracks in your library and on the device, and where a match can be found in the tag information (i.e. same name, track number, artist, album, etc.) the stats or playlist membership information are copied across.
Data copied to an iPod in disk mode can be copied back as is. Media copied over by iTunes however is given obscure filenames and placed in hidden folders. The aim is to prevent casual copying of media. Of course it is no barrier to the determined pirate, but that is the main drive behind the way things are set up.
For the future make sure you backup not just the media but the whole iTunes folder. The core of the library, holding ratings, play counts, playlists etc. is the iTunes Library.itl file. The user tip Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy suggests a way to efficiently backup the folder and then subsequent changes to it.
