If I bought a late 2012 mac mini, should I get a copy of the Mountain Lion OS as well?

I recently bought a mac mini within the last 2 months. Love the computer. But what I want to know is, shouldn;t I get a divital copy of the OS? I mean, if you buy a computer, you typically get the install discs fior the OS. Shouldn;t I be entitlted to the same as well? please let me know. Thanks!

Something I would suggest, get a USB memory stick
and make a copy of the Recovery HD onto it.
Go here and download and follow instructions:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433
This will let you get a reinstall should the internal
drive get corrupted to the point of being unusable
and at the very least allow you to diagnose the problem.

  • New late 2012 mac mini beeping

Hey folks. I bought my late 2012 mac mini about two weeks ago and has been running great so far. I turn it on this morning and i started getting these continous beeps that wont stop. I turned it off and turned it on again and it booted just fine. Is this common or there might be something wrong with it. Its running at stock and no upgrades made.

by the sound of it i think it is EFI ROM corruption. How does that happend?

  • Late 2012 Mac Mini Artifacts

    Hello,
My late 2012 Mac Mini has been spontaneously freezing for roughly the past week.  The instant it freezes odd artifacts show up on the screen.  It all appears to be random, with a touch of bias towards times when safari is running.  I do not know what would be causing the issue, no modifications have been made to the Mac in that time period (or since it was first purchased).
Maybe its a software crash that started with an upgrade?
    Chuck

Completed - "do an SMC (disconnect the computer from electricity for about 15 - 20 seconds) reset, PRAM reset (once plugged in, turn the computer on and immidiately hold cmd opt P and R until you hear 2 bootup chimes), and make sure you have all of your updates...
for a hardware check, boot the computer holding down the D key, that will perform a Hardware Test."
No errors noted by the Hardware Test.  However I was not able to complete the long test due to the error killing it.  See attached photo of error occuring even in Hardware Test.
    Anyone else have an idea?

  • Late 2012 Mac Mini - Random spinning beachball then crash.

    Hi,
I have a late 2012 Mac Mini bought last summer. Since the early days I would randomly get the spinning beach ball and there was no bringing it back. A re-boot would be required. I upgraded to Yosemite and the issue still occurs. I could literally being doing any everyday activity. Browsing the web. Scroll through a quicktime video and it just happens. Now it will crash and I get a grey screen with a folder and blinking question mark. Now I know what that means but then when I reboot the Mac Mini it starts up again. Hardware test finds no faults. I was going to try a clean install but just wanted to get some opinions if possible. Thanks in advance.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Late 2012 Mac mini upgrade ssd - also install parallels 8 and windows 7

Late 2012 Mac mini (16gb memory) SSD install - samsung 840 pro 512 gb.  I am looking to install this new SSD as possibly a dual drive setup almong with the stock HDD 500gb in order to: make the system faster (with more storage etc.), possibly use the stock drive as a backup drive and I also want to run parallels 8 with windows 7.
I have ordered the data doubler kit from Owc and am wondering exactly how to setup properly.  Can I simply install new drive in the upper bay (and move stock drive to lower bay)? Then migrate the data from the stock drive then after that's complete run the setup for parallels?  I am also confused as far as using trim enabler or not?  I was also wondering how much space/memory is recommended for windows 7 partition?
-Thanks in advance for your suggestions

NOTE: A small number of 2012 units were shipped with the drive mounted in the upper drive bay rather than the more typical lower bay shown in this video. If you have a 2012 or later model, you will want to determine the configuration of your Mac mini's drives prior to ordering. To do this, open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and click on the grey drive icon at the left-edge of the window. If you see "Lower" after the "Connection ID" at the bottom-left corner of the window, you may proceed using the standard installation instructions. If you see "Upper" then you have a special configuration which will need additional components, and you will need to also refer to the Addendum video.

Some users have reported problems with an SSD being the boot drive in the upper bay. They have not reported problems with a HD boot from either bay To avoid the problem I would move the HD (if it is in the lower bay) to the upper bay and install the SSD in the lower bay.
I allocated 64 GB for Win 7 in Parallels abd 4 GB Of 16 installed). You can change them later after you install so it is not that importent what you specify initially.

  • Late 2012 Mac Mini display goes to black for a few seconds at random intervals

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini, Ivy Bridge, connected to a 24" Samsung LCD dsplay, using the HDMI to DVI video cable that came with the Mac Mini.  At random times when I am doing something or browsing the web, the screen will go totally black and then revert to the proper display.  This Mac Mini is connected to a 2 port KVM, however I never see this behavior when the KVM is switched over to the PC.  Has anyone else seen this behavior?

  • My late 2012 mac mini boots slow with new ssd drive

So here is the situation.  I purchased a 128gb ssd drive, installed it a usb enclosure, formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), cloned it with carbon copy cloner 3,   used the option key during boot up and selected the ssd drive and it booted my mac mini and it functioned perfectly.  I than tested it for dozens of reboots and it worked fine.  I then took apart my mac mini and removed the original hard drive and installed the new ssd drive.  When I boot to the ssd drive it still takes 47 to 53 seconds just like the old drive.  Aren't ssd drives supposed to be a lot faster?
My solution or tip is as follows; The reason it takes so long to boot is because the mac mini doesn't know you replaced the old drive and it is looking for it during the boot process.  Finally it can't find the drive so it boots to the ssd drive.  All you have to do to correct this is click on "system preferences", select and click on "startup disk" and select your ssd drive and click on "restart".  After these steps your mac mini will now boot in about 17 seconds.  Issues solved.

Yes, my solution fixed the issue.  I went from a 47 to 53 second boot time to a 17 second boot time.  The ssd drive is significantly faster than the original drive that came with my late 2012 mac-mini.   This is my first post and I wasn't sure how to post this as a tip.  I have another tip regarding usb 3.0 hubs.

  • Programs repeatedly crashing on my late 2012 Mac Mini Fusion Drive

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini Fusion Drive 2.6ghz, 16gig RAM running Mac OSX 10.9.4 . For the past week or so I have had a number of programs - both Apple and third party apps crash repeatedly, I have repaired permissions and restarted numerous times but nothing seems to fix it. For example Mail would crash each time I cancelled a password being accepted by Mail in a particular account, Safari has crashed for various reasons. Apple Motion has also crashed more times in the past day or so than it ever has in the past year. It's crashing when I try to add a point or node to a line in an animation I'm finishing.
Does anybody have any idea why this is happening now and does anybody know how to fix it?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Late 2012 mac mini display signal drops while booting and monitor goes to sleep

I have a new Late 2012 Mac Mini.  I have had it for a week, what just started happening is that during restart, the video signal drops and my monitor goes to sleep.  I then have to toggle through the input options on the monitor and the video signal is detected again and the monitor wakes up.
Here is what I see - If i shut down and then power back up, I get the grey screen, then the apple logo, then the little status circle spins for a few cycles then stops and then the screen goes black and the monitor says signal lost and then 5 seconds later goes to sleep.
It is possible it is my monitor but, I haven't had any issues with it and i only drops the signal like that during a reboot.

    Hi there,
The simplest way is to drag it across wirelessly using the 'Airdrop' application once both computers are near one another. 'Airdrop' can be found near the top, on the left hand side menu, within 'Finder'.

  • After rebooting late 2012 Mac Mini a question mark appears on screen

    Hi guys,
After rebooting my late 2012 Mac mini model No A1347 I have a question mark inside a folder always when i try to start my Mac Mini. I understand that I need to reinstall Mac OS X, but I have tryed holding the command, option, R and P keys and nothing happens... I also think the wireless keyboard is maybe not sincronised with the computer, maybe?
I am clueless in how to proceed.
Offcourse, there is no DVD drivein the new mac minis so i can't just reinstall it from a CD.
    Please help!!!
    Thank you!!

You need to press either the Option key or the Command and R keys. If this doesn't work with the wireless keyboard, use a wired one.
If you can get it booted to a normal Mac OS X system, select that system in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • Can I use my late 2006 mac mini as an external drive for my late 2012 mac mini?

I have a (late 2006) Mac mini that I would like to use as an external drive for my (late 2012) Mac mini.  Is this possible and can anyone suggest what cables would be needed.  I am aware that the ports are very different i.e firewire and thunderbolt.  Thanks in advance!

    - You can boo the old Mac in Targe Disk Mode and connect the two via FireWire (FW) You will need a FW 400 to FW 800 cable or a FW 800 or FW 400 cable and appropriate adopters
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
    - Use the old Mac normally and setup Disk Sharing and access the old Mac via the network. The old Mac's disk will show up  under Devices on the new Mac. One you set up the old Mac yo do not need mouse or keyboard or monitor. You can also setup Screen sharing and actually use the old Mac from the new Mac.
    - Remove the HD from the old Mac and place it in an external USB enclosure of dock and connect it to the new Mac

  • Fios Quantum not working with Late 2012 Mac Mini

A new router came out from Verizon in late 2014 so I went ahead and upgraded for $150.  After connecting 3 iPhones, an iPad, and 2 Windows laptops successfully I discovered that my Late 2012 Mac Mini would not work.
Found a random blog post about channel settings, and after some tinkering got it to work.  Basically you need to change the channel settings from Auto to alternate values.  The blog I found said to use 1,6, or 11 for 2.4ghz and a low value for 5ghz.  I tried a few and ended up with channel 6 and 40 as a working pair.  Thought I would share.

I thought about your dilemma while ASC was down, that's good news your welcome!
I spent some of the time replacing the 320GB 5400rpm HD in my 2010 Mac Mini with a 500GB Hitachi Travelstar 7200rpm HD. Then moved forward by Restoring Mountain Lion onto it from an External HD, instead of Snow Leopard from the original 5400rpm drive. I really prefer to keep my music and photos on the Internal HD and so I couldn't justify the cost of a larger SSD.
So basically I flip flopped and now running Mountain Lion on a larger/slightly faster Internal HD and Snow Leopard from a FireWire External HD when needed.

  • [SOS][Urgent]Can I install OS Lion 10.7.x on late 2012 mac mini?

    Hi all,
I got a late 2012 mac mini device which comes with preinstalled Mt Lion(10.8.2).
I need to run dual boot it with Lion 10.7.x. How can I install OS Lion 10.7.x on this device on different partition?
I've tried many ways but have not managed to do it(Create Lion USB bootable use my friend Lion OS dmg file).
    Please help me.
    TriQuang

In general, Macs cannot boot an operating system older than the one they were shipped with installed.  There are some exceptions with those computers that shipped at the time of transition to a new operating system and still had the firmware that permited the immediately previous operating system.  Once the firmware has been updated they can no longer boot the previous operating system.
Depending on the exact manufacture/release date of your computer it may have been possible to boot both Lion and Mountain Lion, but your use of a USB and attempt to boot showed that was not possible.
There is a technique some users say works in this case...and that is to install software such as Parallels 8 on an external drive partition, then install Lion on that partition and run it in a virtual machine environment.  This gets very complicated but can be done.
Another alternative you might want to consider is looking at the Apple on-line store, lower left side of that window, and see what refurbished equipement is available that runs Lion.  Those computers have been completely gone over by Apple, new batteries for the portable models, new caes, any faults repaired, and come with new computer one-year warranties.  They are indistinguishable from a new computer.  And if there is one that meets your needs you would have your current machine running ML and another running Lion.

  • Does anyone know how to update OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1. to 10.8.2. on a late 2012 Mac mini. All I get are 'not compatible' messages even using supplementary updates etc?

Does anyone know how to update OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1. to 10.8.2. on a late 2012 Mac mini. All I get are 'not compatible' messages even using supplementary updates etc?

It appears that many of the problems with the HDMI are the "monitors" that are being used. Samsung and Vizeo both DO NOT support a computer input on HDMI only VGA. There probably are others, manuals must be read to confirm compatability.
I strongly believe that the reason the 10.8.2 update was pulled is due to the fact (it happened to me) that the new Disk Utility creates a Fusion drive if aftermarket SSDs are added to the system. I think Apple wants this propriatary Fusion Drive to be something you buy from them not a "homebrew" for lots less money.
