Yes. Export as QT and drag file into Compressor. Select the DVD preset (either make adjustments via Inspector or not…your call) output either to your optical drive or create a disk image. You should be able to continue to work on your project while the DVD is being encoded and output.
There may be other ways as well…I'm still in discovery mode when it comes to X.

For that reason most people prefer to buy movies on DVD. They are easily shared, foolproof, and super easy to use. I love Apple TV and iTunes for music and TV shows, but I would never purchase a movie that was not on an optical disc.
When I head out-of-town I can grab a couple of DVDs to watch on my new MacBook Pro during the flight. Easy and uncomplicated.
DVDs offer another advantage. You can watch your movie without depending upon a complicated and delicate infrastructure. Also, movies are frequently censored for political correctness (Star Wars is a recent example). Despite public pressure for a release, the Disney movie “Song of the South” remains banned. Even cartoons like Johnny Quest are now censored. Only people who purchased physical copies years ago have them as they were originally produced.
When you possess a physical copy of the movie the PC patrol can't mess with it. -
I bought CS3 several years ago while in school, but had to drop out before I even opened the software. A few months ago I opened and installed the software and used Photoshop to complete a review project in preparation for my return to school. This morning when I tried to open Photoshop again I got a message saying the license didn't support the software anymore and I would need to check with my IT administrator or contact Adobe. I tried calling Adobe but the recorded message said CS was not phone supported. I know it took me a long time to get back to school, but it seems sad to waste the $1,000 I spent on the software. Is there a solution to this issue or do I need to buy new software? Thank you for your help if you have any suggestions.

I am new to iMovie and currently using it to make a movie that I want to give as a Christmas present, therefore I want to burn the movie to DVD so it can be watched on DVD players as well as computers.
I have done research and found that iMovie no longer allows you to burn DVDs via iDVD...
So my questions are:
1) When exporting my iMovie, what file format should I use for best compatibility (can be view on PC, MAC or DVD players)?
2) What is the best free DVD burning software to use to get the movie onto DVD?

NO - a Video-DVD (that can be played on any standard DVD-player) must be created using a DVD authoring program as iDVD etc. AND use Verbatim DVD-R disks to be on the safe side. Memorex is known to be problematic and so is +/-RW and DVD+R only plays on newer DVD-players.
3) What quality should I export from iMovie in? My vidoes are in 1080P I think.
DVD - is as Standard (Whatever program used) only interlaced SD-Video and most programs are bad on Downscaling = Share to MediaBrowser and as Medium use to give best possibly result (if You do not use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut as they can deliver even better result)

DVD quality
1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
About double on DL DVDs.
2. Video from
• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
_ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
• Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
• Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.

TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
• Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
• No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
• Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
• No File Vault on - Important
• NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
• Lot's of icons on DeskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
• Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
• And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

I am trying to burn DVD of the movie I have taken using a Canon and/or aSony video camera. I brought in the movie in iMovie. Enhanced the movie adding titles and various transitions and completed the project. Now how do I make a or several DVD of the movie using iDVD? please help.
You can either share it directly to iDVD by choosing Share > iDVD or you can export it using your favorite preferred settings by choosing Export to Quicktime. With the former method, iDVD will open automatically, with the latter method, open iDVD and drag in your movie. With both: choose a theme for your menu (what people will see when the DVD first starts playing) - you should play around a little to learn how to use iDVD. In any case, when done, you can burn directly from iDVD.

PP 2014 8.1.0 When I "Save As" my project, quit and close, the new project freezes on launching

Blackmagic 4K media working in 4K sequences.
In my current project, I've been experiencing very strange crashes upon launching PP. Before ending my work for the day, I usually save my current project manually, and then do a "Save As" with tomorrow's date at the end, (projectname_2014-12-02) so I have a fresh copy to begin the next day and still have yesterday's as a backup. I then quit PP as normal. No issues. In other words, it closes just fine without any crashing or odd behavior.
In the last week, a rather annoying issue has presented itself. Once in a while, that new project that I created with Save As, will not open. I opens to the point when I can see my bins and my timeline, but as I would expect it to begin propagating the timeline with media, I get the spinning beach ball. I can wait for hours, and the project never loads. I can go back to yesterdays project and open it just fine, but any project saved with Save As, very often seems to be corrupted.
Except, that I can open it up fine on another machine. So it's not really corrupted. And it doesn't happen every time. Just most of the time in the last week or two.
I've done the following troubleshooting several times. Restarted the computer. Repair disk permissions. Launch PP with the option key to clear preferences. Cleaned the media database. Tried launching the project with all media offline. Uninstalled and reinstalled PP. Booted from USB OS install drive and repaired permissions, repaired HD, and even reinstalled the OS (not a clean install, just over the top of the previous one).
Once a Save As project won't open, it's done and I have to go back to yesterday's project.
Now here's where it gets really weird. If I create a new project, and import one of the "won't open" projects, not just a sequence, but the whole project, it's fine. Which of course isn't entirely surprising.
What *is* surprising is that after I save and close that new project with the old imported project in it, I can now go back and open all of the projects that would freeze on opening just minutes earlier.
Everything is right as rain again. I'm glad I have a work around, but it's a little unnerving and random, not to mention time lost troubleshooting this bizarre one.

DURIM - Okay. I would expect the "Cache Warning" message because your default directories would not be the same as the ones in the settings file I generated.
If you go back to the "7.0" directory and open the "Logs" folder, can you copy the "Audition Log.txt" file and send it as an attachment to [email protected]? We'll take a look in that logfile and see if it gives us more information about why this is failing now.
Also, do you have any other Adobe applications installed on this machine, such as Premiere Pro? If so, do they launch as expected or fail as well?
I do have the trial Pro version of Adobe reader, but I have not activated it, because I fear the same thing will happen did it. I cannot afford to activate the subscription for that product and take the chance of it not working either. I depend on those two programs religiously. Here is the files that you requested. Why do I always have to re-render and re-connect project?!?
Hoping someone can help me with what I imagine is a pretty basic issue...
Whenever I open my ProRes 422 HQ project, I always see two problems:
(1) I get a warning that 160 audio files need to be reconnected
(2) About 20% of my timeline requires rendering for video and audio
Neither of the above is a problem in and of itself. I simply reconnect the audio files and render out the unrendered timeline sections.
I then SAVE my project and work normally. And of course I SAVE again just before I quit for the day (in addition to frequent auto-saves).
But the next day, when I boot up my Mac and re-open the project, I still see the above two issues! I then have to reconnect media AGAIN and render the same sections AGAIN! Never fails.
How come these changes never get saved? What can I do to ensure that these items get saved? The reconnecting media is not a big deal but the re-rendering takes an hour.
Any input appreciated.Could be a system/os problem or might be a corrupt sequence or project in fcp.
Simplest thing to do, create a new sequence with the same settings and copy everything from the old sequence to the new.
Still have the same problem? Try copying your sequence to a new project.
As a test, you might try changing your render scratch disk to your startup drive as a test and see if the problem persists.
Make sure your esata card's drivers are up to date.
Are you absolutely positive all clip settings match the sequence settings? Could be a slight difference in audio sampling or someting of the like causing the need to render certain clips. Is it the same clips that always require rendering. Put the playhead on a clip in the sequence that requires rendering and match frame (f) and edit into a new sequence. When fcp asks if you want to match sequence settings to clip, say yes. Does it require rendering? If not, there must be some difference between the clip settings and the original sequence settings. -
Is there a way to burn your project with DVD quality without a dvd menu?
Ive compressed my file and got the .ac3 and .m2v but now I want to just burn it. Dont want a DVD menu or anything, just want to burn it into a DVD so I can just pop it in a drive and it plays. Can someone please walk me threw what to do next?

The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

How to use multiple Mac's to burn a bunch of dvd's ?
I have major G5 Mac with a big screen. 2 second Mac's (iMac and Mac Mini are also around) The dual G5 is good to work with FCP and dvdsp, the iMac and Mac Mini not.
I use the following scenario:
- One FCP Projekt with multiple Sequenzes
- compressor creates the output files with standard template settings
- Then copy the rendered output files to the destination Mac's and import the
Media.
- Finaly burn on all 3 Mac's at the same time
Because i have that trouble in realising this aproche, the idea might be wrong or i overlook someting.
If you start a new project with dvdsp or you "switch" to a other project,
do you use different folders,location where the encoding etc. is done ?
There is a preference section in dvdsp where you can select different location.
Default is $home / cache / dvdstudio pro / ...

(because the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS is allreday done.
Copy the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS onto any copy maschine while using Toast for example. DO NOT CLICK INTO THOSE FOLDERS.
Version 5.x of TOAST made trouble if you do so ...
Currently i am trying both Methodes.

Error with burning slideshow presentation to dvd
i'm currently trying to make a dvd of my many pictures taken from vacation. when i take and export my slideshow from iphoto into idvd i can make all my menus and such just fine. when i got to burn i put my disc in and it renders all my menus and photos and then i always end up with an error at the end. either for the media or multiplexing and what not.
i am using a fairly old powermac..and a 3rd party burner. but the powermac uses the burner just fine for cds and such outta itunes. and the slow speed of the computer doesn't seem to affect it that much just in the time it takes for the whole process.
i've read plenty about making a .img file of the project and then burn that to dvd using toast or disk utility. the only problem with that is that i don't have toast...and disk utility wont allow me to play my dvd in my player...so
i'm curious if my computer is just to slow for this? or if i'm doing something wrong in idvd to make it not work? (i'm a total newbie to making dvds) or if there is some kidna other error? and is there a free alternative to toast?Hello Alarkin,

When you finish your iMovie project, use the Share Menu to Share to Media Browser in Large or Medium size.
(Shareing to iTunes will work, too)
Then in iDVD, you can see the Media Browser at the lower right of the window. You can drag your project in from there. -
i have some old college film projects in xvid format. i'd like to burn them to a dvd that i can watch on my parent's dvd player. how might i go about doing that?
Most likely by jumping through some hoops.
A late model DVD player (DivX compatible) may play them directly if it's already on a disc.
If not you will have to convert them to a format that iMovie uses (DV Stream) and use iMovie to make a DVD. There are other ways but these apps should be on your Mac already.

I have a 20-minute long iMovie project, which I now want to put on a DVD. Unfortunately I have no DVD burner on my iBook. Can I save my project onto an external drive and then burn on onto DVD on another computer (not an Apple). I have tried to save the project directly to an external hard-drive, via the 'share this project' menu item but when the 'compressing' window, it just closes without saving. Any reasons why? Can anyone think of another way to burn my project onto DVD?
Also, can anyone recommend any decent Apple-compatible external hard-drives and DVD burners?

WillYou should be able to do this with the Easter Egg workaround to burn a disc image which can then be burnt to a DVD-R using Disk Utility. Share is only an option in iLife5 and beyond but this does the same for you

Now I would recommend the following steps but first make sure there is about 20GB free on the internal HD then:
1) Shut down/Restart without any applications running.
2) Run Mac Sweeper carrying out all the optimize options including repair permissions and, under clean, empty caches.
3) Launch iDVD and the project
4) "Burn" a copy to disc to hard disc using the Easter Egg workaround.
5) When the run is finished examine the DVD image and play it using the DVD player in the applications folder
6) If and when satisfied and burn a copy using Disc Utility, full instructions on

but you just use the second half to burn the DVD.
You may be able to do this but transferring the disc to a PC but iDVD needs discs formatted for Mac so you might have to burn the image then copy to a PC formatted disc.

hi all, i'm trying to burn mp4 videos on a blank dvd. i used the magicdvd option in idvd 08 but the error message of "encoding error" had appeared before it burned the videos to the dvd. could you please let me know if mp4 is not supported by idvd? i heard i must convert mp4 to mpeg-2 in order to watch it with regular dvd player, can i do that with mpeg streamclip? is mpeg-2 supported by idvd? thanks!

The movie studios make it difficult for Apple to allow you.
Basically you cannot burn them to DVD except in the form they are presently for backup purposes or to transfer to another device you can authorize to play them.
