If I buy a 2013 Macbook Air with an i5 core, can I upgrade it to an i7 core later? Also, can I add more MB of memory later?

Hi,
I know you can configure a Macbook Air to have an i7 core and up to 8 MB of RAM before you buy it. But I'm wondering if you can upgrade it later. I don't think I'll need the i7 now but might need it later as new apps are developed. I'd like my laptop to last more than 5 years (my PC didn't quite make it).

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Neither you will be able to upgrade the processor nor upgrade the RAM. The MacBook Air has got both things soldered to the logic board, and it's impossible to change them after buying your MacBook Air. It's important to get the MacBook Air with the hardware you will need. For example, if you want that your MacBook works properly in some years, get it with 8 GB of RAM. It may work with 4 GB, but to make sure, get 8 GB of RAM.
The only part you can change is the flash storage, and you will void the warranty if you do it

  • 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM v/s 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade?

    HI All
This is my first post here. As mentioned I have a fall 2011 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM and i was thinking of buying a 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade? I do light video editing and day to day tasks like word processing, email etc.
How would the performance of the Macbook Air with the Core i5 with 4 gb Ram be compared to the old Macbook Pro 15 with Core i7 Quad 2.0 ghz with 8 GB Ram.
    Thanks
    Sunny

The main advantage would be a solid state drive. This will improve performance and speed moreso than RAM considerations. The disadvantage will be a loss of storage space. Moreover, one of the disadvantages of a SSD is that the more storage space used on it, the slower it becomes and the quicker it will deteroriate.
If you do video editing, I would take the GPU into consideration. Does your 15'' come with a discrete GPU? The integrated GPU on the MBA (intel HD 5000) is better than the 2011 MBP integrated GPU (3000), but it includes no discrete GPU.
Depending on how much storage space you use on your HDD currently + how many graphics intensive programs you run, you may want to consider upgrading your current machine with a SSD, upgrading your RAM on current machine to 16 gb (~160$ through macmemory or newegg), or purchasing a new Macbook Pro rather than Macbook Air.
    Last thing I would add:
You will never be able to upgrade MBA RAM. It is soldered to the logicboard on the new models, non-retina included. You may wan to opt with the 8 GB RAM configuration.

I have a MacBook Air with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Will it run Lion?

Yes, if it has at least 2 GBs of installed RAM.

one of first versions of macbook air with black horizontal lines on bottom one third of screen and vertical line also one third of left side of screen

    Hi
I've recently notice I have a thin black line in my screen.. I went to Apple store and was told it’s a hardware problem (400$+ to fix as no warranty).
This is the second time I’m having hardware screen issues with a Macbook Air (last time it was 3 months after I bought it, and it was replaced with this one)
Looks like the Macbook Air screens are very problematic!  Anyone experience something like that?
    Thanks,
    Eyal.

  • Which should I pick? A 2012 Macbook Air with 8GB of RAM, or a 2013 Macbook Air with 4GB of RAM?

My mother bought herself a new computer, and she is letting me choose which one will go to my sister: my 2012 Macbook Air, or her 2013 Macbook Air. My sister does not care at all about performance, but I definitely do. Which would be better to take? Keep in mind, I do like to run video games, and still would like optimal speed for things like running various programs, Specs below.
    2013 Macbook Air:
    Intel Core i5-4250U @ 1.30 GHz
    4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Intel HD Graphics 5000
    2012 Macbook Air:
    Intel Core i5-3427U @ 1.80 GHz
    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Intel HD Graphics 4000

Both computers you are looking at use Intel's integrated video and unless you are going to be compiling a massive program you won't notice a significant difference between the two machines. You'll want 8GB RAM for sure and I strongly recommend the 256GB drive rather than the 128GB drive. You don't fully realize how small a 128GB drive is until you find it full and think "But I hardly have anything on it!"
I found that using a second display has very helpful though today an iPad could fill in for the second display. I liked to have documentation, lab notes, or a Web site open in one screen with the IDE open in the other. That was easier than flipping back and forth between windows.

  • I just purchased the mid 2013 MacBook Air with the 1.7 GHz Processor.

I was making a disk image using disk utility, and it was scolding hot. I checked activity monitor and it was using only about 30-50% of the processor and my fan was ramped up to full RPM...I shutter at the though of using more than 50% of the processor. Is this normal? Did I just have higher expectations of it than i should have? Are you just simply not able to use the Haswell processor like at all? For your info, i was making an image a hard drive partition to move it to another hard drive. It was only connected to one hard drive...Any one experiencing something similar or have any idea if this should be happening?

Maybe so, but when I am using it on the web and doing normal light tasks the temp stays around 95-130 depending on if I'm using plug-ins or not which is exactly what I would expect and have gotten with my other machines. So I don't think it would be wildly inaccurate at the upper end of the temp scale. (Not saying that is not possible, but I would think its unlikely). Thanks though for your input, I guess I will wait untill it breaks or Apple says "oops" and does a REP. It seems to handle a heavy load well now that I have had a chance to play with it more. It still gets like 205, but even using near 100% CPU or playing games it never gets any hotter.

  • I just bought a new MacBook Air with Lion. How can I install Lion on my MacPro?

If the way I get Lion is only pre-installed on the new computer, I'm wondering how I would go about installing it on another Mac that I already own. Thanks!

Apple may have used the App store version of Lion as a temporary distribution channel for its brief free upgrade program in July, but Apple has never in the past continuously licensed the OS that comes with a new computer for use also on additional computers. The situation with Lion is therefore nothing new. The App store product is equivalent to the old "retail DVD" that you could buy for previous OS versions - they are both  meant for older computers that shipped with earlier OS versions, and neither is free.  The difference in the case of Lion is that you are getting something similar to the old "family-pack" retail DVD at no extra cost.
Details are in the Lion OS X 7.2 license agreement, available here.
    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx1072.pdf
It includes the following, which makes clear that the new-product license and the App store license are different entities:
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
    A. Standard and Preinstalled Apple Software License. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, unless you obtained the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, on Apple- branded physical media (e.g., on an Apple-branded USB memory stick) or under a volume license, maintenance or other written agreement from Apple, you are granted a limited, non- exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple- branded computer at any one time. For example, these standard single-copy license terms apply to you if you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware.
    B. License from Mac App Store or on Physical Media. If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or on Apple-branded physical media, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:
    (i ) to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control;

  • I sadly have a mac 10.4.8 with a 2GB how can I add more memory?

I really need help because I really need to update this ancient software lol

You can install as much as 6 GB in your 2007 MacBook Pro.
Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find.
Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.
Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales.

  • Faulty logic boards installed in the 2013 MacBook Air?

Just discovered the logic board in my 2013 MacBook Air, only one year old, has to be replaced. Computer will not boot up. Anybody else seeing this problem?

    squillo,
A logic board failure can indeed be frustrating! If the computer is within it's one year warranty or you have Apple Care, Apple will be able to take care of you at no charge! I have a few friends with 2013 MacBook Airs with no issues. Can you be more specific about the model. Most of the time Apple will have two to three release refreshes a year and the hardware is different.
    Thanks,
    Ludeth

  • Time Machine backup created on Mac with a large hard disk. What happens when restore to MacBook Air with small SSD drive?

What if a Time Machine backup was created on a Mac with a large hard disk, e.g. 500GB iMac - and I buy a new MacBook Air with a small SSD hard disk e.g 128GB. What happens when I need to use the larger Time Machine file to set up the new MacBook Air? What happens to all those files that can't fit on the smaller SSD drive?

It is not the HD size, but rather the size of the data it contains. If you right-click your 500GB drive and select "Get Info" you can see how much is actually being used.
Naturally if you are using more space than the new drive has, then you have to make some choices about what you want to keep and what you want to keep archived.
I don't know what options are available but you may simply have to do a manual restore of files you want, in groups.

  • Photoshop CC not loading on MacBook Air with Mac OS 10.9 (Mavericks)

Photoshop CC is not loading at all after updating my 2013 MacBook Air with Mac OS 10.9. The error message (in German as I am using the German version) says "Konnte Photoshop nicht initialisieren da ein Programmfehler aufgetreten ist" ("couldn't initialize photoshop since a program error occurred") . Application launcher is updated to the latest version and deinstalling and re-installing photoshop CC didn't change anything. What can I do?

  • Install Snow Leopard on a 2013 MacBook Air

    Hello.
I'm quite interested in buying a 2013 MacBook Air.
as far as I'm aware, that Mac model will have OS X Mavericks unstalled, but, due to work related circunstances, I would like to create a partition, and to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on that partition. Basically, i would liek to make a dual boot: Snow Leopard / Mavericks.
Question: Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on a 2013 MacBook Air?!
(And yes, I'm aware that Snow Leopard doesn't bring most of Mavericks functions!)
Thank you for any hel you may provide me.
    All the best!

  • Is there a way to digitize audio using the headphone input on the 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with Retina display?

I'd like to digitize audio from a minidisc player into my 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with retina display, but can't see a way to change the internal mic input.  I understand that previous MacBooks allowed the headphone jack to double as a mic input, but mine doesn't seem capable of switching.  I've tried using a mini to mini cable, with no luck, and also tried using a headset splitter adapter (3.5 mm 4-pin to 2x3-pin 3.5 mm headset splitter adapter from Amazon) because I read that that would allow me to plug in headphones and input audio.  But in both cases, the only "input" available in my sound preferences is the built-in internal microphone.  Am I missing something?  Is there a way to digitize audio through the headphone jack?

Not likely. headphone jacks are usually output only devices unless specifically stated to support input, and even then, it may not be audio input that they support, but merely control input for volume and such.
You can get a USB audio input instead. i.e:
