Apple does not take trade-ins. In a few countries Apple does work with a company who will give you some return on an existing device; for the US, see:

Similar programs are available in a few other countries, and some dealers may have their own trade-in programs. But you most probably can get more for your device if you sell it yourself.

Your question has been answered. Jailbreaking cannot be discussed here. If you buy a phone locked to a carrier, it would be down to them to unlock it, and that's very unlikely if you've only just got the phone. Locked phones are "cheap" for a reason - you're signing up for a contract and that subsidises the cost of the phone.

I want to buy the new Ipad off Amazon. Before with the Ipad 3 you had to pick the specific one for your carrier. With the Ipad 4 I do not see any that say 4G or that are carrier specific. Amazon is not an authorized reseller for the iPad. All the iPads they sell are from affiliates and many if not most of those will also be unauthorized. I'd strongly suggest you buy only from an authorized iPad dealer. If you have an Amazon credit, make a deal with someone who wants to buy something they can get from Amazon. They can then reimburse you so you can go out and buy your iPad from a valid source.

Go buy yourself a iPhone 5. Sync your iPhone 3GS to iTunes on you computer so you have a back up ready to put on the iPhone 5. If you want you can update your iPhone 3GS with iTunes on your computer, but this is not necessary.

I'm a university student .They can both read PDFs. It will really boil down to what screen size you prefer and how portable you want it. The iPad Air has a larger screen, but weighs more than the iPad Mini2. Either one will work for you, its just a matter of preference.
