If I buy a MBP now - Leopard free?

With Leopard right around the corner, will new MBP owners get the upgrade free?
I was about to buy a MBP in the Apple store, and not one sales person knew how Apple was going to handle this.
Any ideas guys?

There really isn't anything wrong with OS 10.4 Tiger. It is mature and stable. If you don't mind waiting a few months, that's one thing... but I wouldn't hold off on getting a MacBook Pro if I were looking for something now just for the new OS release. There are going to be some nice changes and enhancements... but it is not a revolutionary update. Also... as the OS has only been tested by developers, there will likely be some real world situations that the developers overlooked. It's impossible for them to try every situation that every consumer may encounter. At least if you get a MacBook Pro now, you have an OS that has been around for a few years and will perform as it should. I would suggest that you wait for a few weeks after 10.5 is released just to see if people are having problems.

  • Opinion on buying a mbp now

Hey guys, I'm stuck here, for the last 2 years I have very slowly saved up enough for a mbp. I'm gonna go for the lowest model, but i need to know what you guys think. I am using the eduaction discount to buy my mac so if I buy it now I get a free ipod, but I dont no if I should get it now or wait until leopard comes out. I dont need and ipod as i already have a much older one but it neIi have people telling me wait till leopard, there is no need to shell out more money in two months.what do you guys think? Does anyone know if apple is doing a program similar to the update of tiger where if you bought a new computer you would get a form and you just would fill it out and send it in with 30$ or something like that and they would send you the new operating system? thanks alot in advance and help is more then appreciated

As far as the MBP itself is concerned, it was updated not too long ago, and I doubt that we will see another update until January (around MacWorld). With the free iPod and printer incentives, I think now is a fine time to buy a MBP.
As for Tiger/Leopard... Leopard is due out in October and, if you buy a MBP now, I don't think that Apple would offer you a program such as what you remember from Tiger. If Apple does offer a program like that for Leopard, then you would have to buy your MBP much closer to when Leopard comes out (and nobody can predict an exact release date).
    Hope this helps,
    Jason

  • Buy MBP now or wait for Leopard release?

Hi All, long time Windows user here, getting ready to make the switch to Mac as my laptop is dying.
My question, not being familiar with how Apple updates its product line, if I buy a MBP (17") now, is Apple likely to release a new model with different hardware with Leopard, or in the very near future?
I've been watching all year, and know that the MBP's were just updated, which is why I'm finally ready to switch, I wanted a 512 meg video card, and 4 gigs of ram.
Also, I will have to run Windows, either in Boot Camp or Parallels, as I have some high end sewing and embroidery software that is Windows only. Would I be better off with Xp or Vista... and whichever, can I just buy an OEM copy for half the cost, since I'll only be using it on the new Mac?
    Thank you very much!
    CJ

Hi, Apple will certainly include Leopard on it's next Macbook Pro update. When that will happen only Apple knows for sure. Some talk around says maybe in August or October. I just bought a new Macbook Pro equipped with Safari of course and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I was aware that Leopard is coming but I simply did not want to wait. Besides I can always install Leopard at a later date if need be. Safari does everything I want it to do, so it was a no brainer for me.
Whether or not Apple will update its video card to 512mb remains to be seen.
Prior to buying this Macbook Pro I also used Windows XP and Vista Ultimate. Vista is a memory hog and runs slowly on computers even with 2 gb of ram which I had. I was not impressed with Vista. I much preferred XP.
I don't know what the legal implications are if you buy an OEM Windows disc and install it on another computer. Maybe someone who knows copyright law can chime in.

  • So... Can I buy MBP now?

    Hello everyone,
So, I have made up my mind and decided to invest into newly 2.16GHz, 1GB RAM, 256VRAM, 100GB MBP (this is not a built-to-order, but a stock one from the Apple store). I will go to buy it sometimes next month. And after days and hours searching and reading a lots of threads here, may I ask you the following questions:
    1. Should I buy the MBP at this moment or should I wait for a while. I definitely need computer for my job but 1 or 2 months I can wait. I guess the machine got some problem when it was first launched, but now is about more than 1/2 year later so...
    2. The MBP SuperDrive is also my big concern. Does Apple improve something on it by now or it is still picky on old or other media such as old and burnt CDs/DVDs I have had before with my PB 15"?
    3. As far as Universal appl. concern, I assume that I can stay with the Rosetta for those are not Universal. But on the top of it, does anyone hadve bad experience with Photoshop CS2, Microsoft Office 2004 for MAC, some chat program and some browser, like Firefox?
Thank you very much for any story, any advice and I am waiting to hearing from you in order to buy the new MBP.
    Thanks a lot,
    James

Well of course, nobody is making you purchase a MBP, so you can purchase whenever you want to! Would it be wise to purchase now? According to reports that I've read and my own personal experience, I can say that the problems such as the CPU whine, mooing, and heat (but to a lesser extent, I'll admit) do still exist and people have been reporting these issues on computers that are as new as week 21! However, problems on newer models seem to be more widespread, but keep in mind that beauty, and ugliness, are in the eye of the beholder...
If you can wait, it certainly wouldn't hurt. Even if Apple are still using the Core Duo chips in 1-2 months, you might be able to get a free speed bump out of the deal or, if they decide to slap in the Merom chips ASAP, waiting could grant you a cooler, hopefully problem-free Core 2 Duo chip. Of course, others will say that you can wait forever as computers are constantly being outdated and updated by new technology. But to be honest, looking back on my own experience, getting a Rev A machine has been a mistake and I probably should've waited for the Core 2 Duo chip. (My circumstance and method for obtaining an MBP were slightly different and I didn't have much of a choice, but I do miss my PB now...)
As for the SuperDrive, I can say with confidence that it burns my audio CDs just fine. Outside of that, I can't comment because I've never burned a DVD in my life!
PPC app performance with Rosetta is okay, but definitely bulk up on the RAM to make it closer to "snappy". Despite high clock speed, a second core, and more RAM, MS Office was by far more responsive and smooth on my PowerBook and I do encounter the beach ball every so often on my MBP as I type. I've actually had to slow down my typing on occasion to allow Rosetta to "catch up". Not really a huge problem though. Also, web browsers shouldn't be too much of a concern especially since the Mozilla group has released Universal versions of their browsers, or at least Camino. I use it instead of Safari and its great; same concept as Firefox but with more of a Mac look and feel.
As a disgruntled MBP owner, my advice is to wait and see what the future holds. If nothing else, it might at least bring some type of official fix for the CPU whine from Apple, whether it be a logic board exchange or a firmware update. And at the very worst, you lose nothing and can still buy the same machine in two months that you could've today.
    Good luck!

I used to use the free version of Adobe Reader to convert my publisher files to pdf files. When I was making a booklet for our hockey team, it said I had to buy it. Now I bought it and it won't convert the files. I am ready to throw this computer out the window!! Can you tell me what is the problem? No it does not exceed 100 M. either.

Adobe Reader never converted Publisher files to PDF, for free, never. I suspect you use to have the (paid for) Adobe Acrobat. Sometimes people have Acrobat (more than $300 worth) and install Adobe Reader over the top, losing that valuable software.
That said, if you subscribed to PDF Pack it should do this conversion. What exactly happens now.

  • I have a new Mac Book Pro. If I buy Lightroom 5 now, may I upgrade to Lightroom 6 for free ?

I have a new Mac Book Pro. If I buy Lightroom 5 now, may I upgrade to Lightroom 6 for free ?

    No one knows.
The usual Adobe policy in the past is if you purchase a version of Lightroom and within 30 days a newer version comes out, they will give you a free upgrade. The problem is, Adobe never pre-announces when the new version will be coming out. (And of course, Adobe could announce a different policy for Lightroom 6)
So, its up to you whether you buy now or wait.

  • If I buy OSX Lion now can I get Mountain Lion later next month for free?

    Any idea?

    Only on a new Mac.
In simple terms, you either need:
A qualifying 10.7 Mac purchased on June 11, 2012 to 10.8's release date, then you have 30 days afterwards to upgrade to 10.8 for free.
Bought a qualifying new 10.7 Mac on or after the 10.8 release date which you then have 30 days to request a free 10.8 upgrade.

    Hi gntn0058,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you are being asked to verify the credit card information on your iTunes Store account.
If you would like to remove your Visa card from your account, you can do so using the steps found in this article:

  • When MBP Snow Leopard pre-installed

    Hello,
I will be buying my very first mac. I am going to buy 17inch MBP. Apple announced that Snow Leopard is going to be released around September. Do you know when Apple will release MBP with Snow Leopard preinstalled? Perhaps September or maybe a bit sooner? By then, do you think MBP will have some upgrade again?
    Thanks

    Why wait?
If you buy a Mac now, you'll be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard for only $9,95 when it is released:

  • Connect Linux-based external drive to MBP running Leopard?

I had the misfortune to have two Western Digital NetCenter 500GB external drives have issues in less than 12 months (Tip: don't buy one . The 1st NetCenter's browser-based admin console became unavailable and the drive invisible via Ethernet, but visible via USB. The 2nd NetCenter is not even visible via USB.
The NetCenter drives are formatted with Reiser file system but has firmware included in the enclosure so it can be connected to PCs or Macs via Ethernet or USB.
I removed the drive from the NetCenter enclosure and put it into standard USB enclosure. The drive spins-up and is "found" by my MBP running Leopard but the only option is to reformat the drive. I tried to pull the data off on a borrowed PC. Windows recognizes a USB external drive is connected but the drive not visible in the Disk Manager. I'm 95% certain my data is fine, I just need to find a way to have my MBP recognize the drive.
Anyone have a recommendation on a h/w or s/w configuration in which Leopard will recognize the drive?
    Thanks!
    Bill

I have a Simpleshare NAS Drive by SimpleTech which also uses the Reiser File System (RFS). Unfortunately, there is not much you can do with it. As I understand it, the RFS needs the Linux OS that was built into the drive in order for the Mac to see the data. RFS is not really compatible with the Mac file ssystem and not all Mac files will get copied to the drive anyway.
My suggestion is to put the drive back into the original enclosure and see if you can get it up and running long enough to get you data off of it.

  • How to update leopard to snow leopard free ?

can anyone help how to update leopard to snow leopard free ? ive been told it is possible but cannot due to update to mac OS X 10.6 which i cant do

At one time Apple was providing free copies of 10.6 to MobileMe subscribers, I doubt they still do though, not sure.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It's been pulled from the online store & Apple Stores, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard.

  • I have zero out all data on my imac, as i brought it second hand and the disk the guy supplied dont seem capatable with my imac to install the operating system again so it is frozen at the grey start up screen. show i buy a new snow leopard disc fromapple

i have zero out all data on my imac, as i brought it second hand and the disk the guy supplied dont seem capatable with my imac to install the operating system again so it is frozen at the grey start up screen. should i buy a new snow leopard disc from apple and install that as my new operating system. please help as had the computer a month now and still cant use it yet.

You can call AppleCare and request a replacement set of the original DVD's that shipped with the computer for a nominal charge. You will need the serial number (look on the bottom of the stand) and a credit card. Click the AppleCare Contact Info link. Without knowing which iMac you have it's very difficult to say if a new SL disc would work or not.

  • Which would you buy? MBP or iMac. I need guidance 2.

Ok, I'm heading for a replacement. I had a MBP CoreDuo 2.0/1 GB/80 GB 5400 rpm HD/X1600 128 mb/matte. It had some problems and Apple are offering me a replacement.
I need a computer for (mobile) audio recording/mixing, graphic (Photoshop & Illustrator)and web site design (Flash), browsing, media center. This is a everyday tool that I'll use pretty intensively and maybe I could wait next year to have a notebook when I'll return to school.
So I have the choice between the Core 2 Duo 15 inch Macbook Pro with matte screen or the Core 2 Duo iMac (20 or 24 inch). The only reason why I hesitate taking a new Macbook Pro are the issues concerning the grainyness/uneven illumination of the screen and the Airport issues.
Would you consider it safe to take the Core 2 Duo 15 inch Macbook Pro or you would recommend me the iMac? I know the iMac doesn't have the same degree of portability as the MBP...
Because I had my share of visits at an Apple Service Provider...
    Thank you for the advices!

    yv,
Have you actually seen this "graininess" issue for yourself? I only ask because I was very hesitant about buying a MBP for that reason. I went into the Apple Store, compared screens between MacBook, MacBook Pro and iMac. The MacBook screen was clearly inferior. The MacBook Pro (15") and the iMac screen looked comparable in quality. I saw no graininess.
I went to CompUSA the following week. I brought my wife with me. She's a graphic designer, works on very good quality monitors all day--in fact she makes the purchasing decisions for the graphics department of a Fortune 500 company. We compared the same three sets of monitors. She came to the same conclusion as me: the MacBook monitor is inferior. The MacBook Pro and iMac monitors are not noticeably different in quality. In fact, she even thought the MacBook Pro was every bit as good as the Apple Cinema Display they had. I bought a MacBook Pro right there.
I've been using it for about 6 weeks now. Its the best laptop screen I've ever used-better than my daughter's PowerBook G4 (last generation), better than my wife's high-end PC laptop (I think its a Toshiba), better than my son's PowerBook G4 (second to last generation). I also compare it to my higher end 22" external monitor (more expensive Gateway version). Sure, the external is better, but it isn't designed for a laptop.
So, maybe I got lucky, and all the MacBook Pros at the Apple Store, and the ones at CompUSA and the one I purchased all happened to be the few that don't have this problem (mine was manufactured during the last week of November or the first week of December). Or, this is a relatively rare problem with one of the earlier batches. Or it is exaggerated to begin with. Take a look for yourself.

If I buy an Imac now how do i upgrade when mountain lion is released

The same way most of us upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion last summer. Perform one last backup just in case. Make sure all important software is up to date. Download the new OS from the Mac Apple Store. Run and wait until the installer finishes.
That's the short version. If you do a little searching with Google you'll find  Macworld did a very nice upgrade article for Lion and I'm certain 99% of it will apply to ML as well.
