If i buy a second hand iphone can i check if it is stolen first?

i have a great chance to get a US 4gb iphone, which i'm sure will be a collectors item in the future.I have no reason to suspect it is stolen but simply am trying to be sensible, better safe than sorry.
Can i check to see if the iphone is/was stolen?
Or trace the previous original first owner?
Is there a data base for this kind of thing?

Both AT&T and Apple know who the owner is. But under their privacy policies they probably won't tell you. If you call AT&T with the serial number they MAY tell you if it is stolen.

Hi All, I want to buy a second hand iphone as a gift. Can a apple store identify whether the phone has been dropped so that I can make sure it has not been damaged?

I thought they had diagnostic test at the genius bar that can show a accelerometer log if there has been a fall.

I'd like to buy an iphone second hand and although I trust the source I'd like to be able to check with certainty that the phone was bought instore.
I was thinking to ask for the receipt and check the serial number. is the serial number written on the back of the phone and the recipt(if the phone is sealed)?
Similarly, if I buy an ipad 3 or 4 second hand, how do you check this again?
Please let me know with some details about this.

Ask the person you are buying the phone from to provide the original proof of purchase for the phone. If you do not know the seller personally I would be very cautious about purchasing the phone. There are many many stolen, hacked and jailbroken phones out there and these will only cause you grief down the road.

There's no mechanism in place for anyone to report stolen phones to Apple thus they don't get involved. That job is for the police dept. Knowing what the seller needs to do before selling the phone might help you before purchasing it.

Sure. If you allow iTunes to blat the content already on it, and sync to your iTunes, it'll be yours.
iTunes doesn't really care about the device - it cares about your account - any device that's synced to your account is "yours" as far as iTunes cares.

The previous owner has to disassociate/unregister their device from their Apple ID - you cannot do it for them.

There is no way to know for certain that any iPhone you buy from a stranger isn't jailbroken, stolen, or reported lost and replaced (and hence probably blocked by the carrier). The only reliable place to buy an iPhone is from Apple or an authorized iPhone dealer.

The phone may be locked with a passcode. If it is, follow the directions here, to force the phone into recovery mode & restore it:

This will remove the passcode, but also update the phone to iOS 7.0.4...no way around this if there's a passcode on the phone. If no passcode, just do the erase all settings & content if you don't want to update the phone.
