If your father feels the cost is too high, then perhaps you should start saving your money and buy the phone yourself. Just be sure to save enough to pay the monthly fees too.

    Is there any advantage to buying the phone from the Apple store vs the ATT people? I found with my Treo the ATT folks don't know much about it and also didn't offer any insurance for it either!

    There used to be a huge difference. AT&T would let you order, while  would make you come and stand in line. With the 3GS, Apple allowed pre-orders.
    Now, there is no difference. If you are the only person on your account, it is pretty simple to set it up. If you have multiple cell phones on your accounts, it may be better to let ATT set it up to handle the complexity. (But either way, you can call AT&T 1-800 number to resolve any issues.)

    I've never been interested in buying a phone at launch before, but the iphone5 has come along at the perfect time for me so I'm all in.    My question is about how the best way to get the phone will be.    If I buy it online, will the phone arrive ready to go, or will I have to take it in-store to set it up?
    If I go to preorder at the verizon store Friday morning, will I find chaos and lines (ala a Video game console launch)?    Since I'm going with the verizon plan, am I locked into buying the phone through them if I want my upgrade bonus, or can I still buy through Apple online or Bestbuy?
    Are shortages normally a problem for an iphone launch?
    Thanks for any help and or advice.... I'm a noob when it comes to this, and I just don't want to have to camp out to get a phone within a couple of weeks of launch.

    Another difference is that you can get the free services from the store to transfer the contacts data from your old phone to the new phone.
    And that was the reason I bought my iPhone 5 from Best Buy instead of buying from online.  However, it appeared that some of their staff do not have the appropriate knowledge on the fact that the transfer must be done before the old phone are locked.
    I got my iPhone 5 from Best Buy and asked them to transfer the contacts data from my old phone to the new phone.  They said that their machine was not working and asked me to come back later to transfer the data.  On the next day I visited their store again, they were not able to transfer the data as my old phone card was locked and any data inside the old phone memory can never be recovered .  I should have walked away when they said their data transfer machine was not working .  Now I have to rebuild the contacts and many precious contacts are long gone .

    The model numbers are different and each is carrier locked to their respective carriers.
    Even if they were not, the £269 price in the UK includes VAT. The price without VAT is £228.94
    The price in the U.S. Store does not include sales tax. Last time I checked sales tax in New York City is 8.375%.
    If you compare the pre-tax prices the difference is approximately £24. The rest of the difference is taxes.

    Oh so its ok for almost every other phone be released outside the US first. We usually get phones months and almost years or never after a phone is released. This is one of the first times we get our hands on this type of technology first and its a problem. We are "beta testers" if so im glad its this phone. LOL HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I keep stopping and asking i-phone users if there has been an upgrade, some say yes, but most say NO. How much has your volume improved?     Ive had no problems with the volume. The speaker phone could be better, but plug in the headphones that come with, even with one ear in, i can hear in the middle of the city just fine. The volume for the rings has went up, plus now you can make your own custom ringtones which grab your attention pretty fast.

    The $199 price is only for customers signing a new 2yr contract or those that qualify for an upgrade.
    If you do not qualify for an upgrade, the price is $649 for the 16GB iPhone5.

  • Why is it I can't just buy the new iPhone without needing an upgrade?

    This has been the most bizarre experience I have ever encountered, and it's enough to put me off Verizon and Apple altogether.
    Yesterday, I went to pick up the new iPhone for myself and my wife, having gotten and email that we were eligible for the Early EDGE upgrade. I'm first told at the store that Apple is only allowing 1 phone per person to be sold... Ok, fine. So I get inside and, being the decent gentleman I am, opt to upgrade my wife's line first and will just do mine later that day. Upgrade for her goes smooth, now it's time to do mine. Oh, wait, apparently the EDGE upgrade can be applied to one line, and it was just my wife's; a detail that was cleverly hidden at the bottom of the email in black on grey text after all the marketing copy about how great the new edge program is. The Verizon rep tries to think of ways to get me the phone cheaper, but ultimately can't. I ask if I can just buy the phone at cost, and I'm told no because it doesn't go on sale to the general public until later, though no time is given. Again, Apple's rules.
    Now, I'm pretty sure Apple could care less about exactly when someone buys their phone if they have the cash to do so, and I'm doubly sure they don't care about making sure those with upgrades can get the phone. All of this is starting to sound a little iffy. Whatever, I let it slide.
    It is now 6pm, still yesterday, and we head into Best Buy to look at cases and see if they have a display 6 Plus to check out, as I'm curious about the size. I ask a Best Buy rep if they have any iPhone 6s left; they do; 128gbs? Yup. Silver??? Yup. VERIZON???? Yup. I'LL TAKE IT! One iPhone 6 at full price please! Oh, wait, no; Apple boogie man says I can't buy the phone for full price, I have to have to qualify for an upgrade. (I'm getting more and more ****** as I'm typing this, FYI). Ok, so now clearly something is amiss. 2 different locations- the official Verizon Store AND Best Buy are telling me I can't buy the phone without an upgrade, and both of them suggesting Early EDGE, even though I have the cash to just buy it. I tweet my frustration to both VerizonWireless and Apple. AC from Verizon Support tweets back sayings they should have let me buy it... Wow, this is ridiculous.
    Can someone please clarify this: who is correct here? Is it really Apple playing gate keeper and looking out for those upgrade-only customers? Why is it 2 different places told me the same thing, yet the support rep is telling me something different?
    At this point I'm just not going to both attempting to get the phone for a while since this has put me off even trying, but some clarity on just what is going on would be nice. Also, please talk to your Director of Customer Loyalty about his team's email design. While I'm fine with finding out it was just one line, (though I would have preferred both since my wife and I have been on the same account since it opened...), burying that information at the bottom of the email is not going to help retain customers. Expiration dates and other terms of service are fine there, but which line the upgrade applies to needs to be surfaced sooner.

    It sounds as if you only had one line with an upgrade available. So you can only upgrade one line. For you to upgrade as well, you will have to wait until your upgrade is available. You can check that at MyVerizon. That's just how it works. All carriers and phone brands are the same. I have to wait until February to upgrade. The only thing you can do to get the new iPhone, is add a new line. But then you're paying for a line you don't need.

    to cut a long story short. I was interested in an i-phone... got the details..checked them all.. on the phone and with the provider, VODAPHONE... told unlocked, not stolen etc etc. proceeded to buy the phone...new sim topped up £10 only to find it wouldn't work...
    Went into vodaphone store..been running around following thier advice..(they said I need a friend who is a customer on vodaphone to get passed the unlocking with a vodaphone code.. and they would do it for free given the circumstances...so i run errands go back and forth doing as they asked...got nowhere) SO IT IS NOW A MONTH LATER..and after complaining and complaining to thier email site and repeatedly asking for help in store..I am stumped as what to do and just have a glorified ipod. I WILL NOT BE FORCED TO REMAIN ON THE VODAPHONE NETWORK given the situation they have put me in and thier unwillingness to help so i refuse to use the phone with vodaphone... BUT WHAT can i do PLEASEEEEEEE? all they keep on suggesting is that I get the original owners details but he is not answering anything...and the phone is not registered as stolen etc so what is the problem!?
    As you can imagine I am really peeved by the whole thing as I actually carried out all the necessary checks, and whilst the phone was not bought directly from vodaphone, I went to them as the provider, to find otu about unlocking etc as it is always advised to do so..and it was them that gave me the wrong information but they still will not resolve the issue. I have even sent them phone records to confirm when I rung and the name of the invalid who told me the phone was unlocked in the first place. I really would much appreciate any help as they are ignoring  my emails now.

    What I am saying is ..........
    The iPhone HAS to be active making calls on the UK carrier network for the carrier to identify as "theirs" and therefore eligible for the Carrier to unlock
    The way to achieve this is to use a PAYG sim making and receiving calls to establish a customer relationship  with the Carrier and then follow the Carrier's process to unlock
    With a PAYG it usually means adding a specified (by the carrier ) amount  usually £15 /£20 depending on the carrier
    This is how O2 function and according to Gemma  this is how Vodafone work
