If I delete an old backup from my phone, will those items be deleted from my phone? Example pictures and contacts

In order to install the new iOS7, I want to backup my phone to the iCloud first. I haven't backed up my phone since June, and have deleted tons of stuff since then. My iCloud doesn't have enough room to backup my phone at this time, so can I simply delete the OLD backup from my cloud and make a new backup? *WITHOUT LOSING ANYTHING CURRENTLY ON MY PHONE*? HELP!!!!!!!!

Yes, pictures in Photo Stream will deleted. Only on photo stream not on iCloud and Camera Roll. You can login again if you want.

If I delete photos from my ipad, will those photos be deleted from my iphoto albums?

I assume the photos have made it onto the iPad through syncing with the computer with iTunes, yes?
Then you should sync again, but first remove the photos you don't want on the iPad anymore from the selection of photos to be sync'd.
You can delete them on the iPad, but (a) next time you're syncing they'll be back there again unless you excluded them then, and (b) you probably need the space on the iPad for stuff that's also coming from the computer via sync - so then you can do it all at once by modufying the selection of what shall be sync'd.
Hint: This is the forum for iPhoto as in "on the Mac". Since you're referring to iPhoto for iOS and seem to have a PC, not a Mac, you should post in the dedicated forum for iPhoto for iOS.

What happens if i delete an old backup from my iCloud to free up space?

Nothing. You will lose that backup but you will still be able to make backups in the future if you want to. You can also remove things you do not need from the backup, so you do not have to lose everything from your backup.

  • I have recently deleted several old backups from a portable usb drive (formated NTFS-3g(MacFUSE). The macmini can´t see it anymore but my imac does?

I have recently deleted several old backups from a portable usb drive (formated NTFS-3g(MacFUSE). The macmini can´t see it anymore but my imac does? The usb ports of the mac mini can still see my other drives formated with FAT32.

Thanks, it is working now, after I have installed NTFS3G.
I did not format the drive. I was using it as purchased to do backups for a while. After the corporate backup system was working correctly again I was using the disk at home for my homevideos. Since the corporate backup was running correctly for ten days in a row, I have decided to delete those backupfiles on the usb drive. Each backup was a folder consisting of almost 30GB data, mirroring the servers harddrive which is running on windows xp. After I have deleted those folders, only the video files remaind and I could not open the drive on the macmini anymore.

  • I can't delete an old backup from my iCloud

Hi, I'm trying to turn off and delete an old backup from my iCloud, but I received an error message "Cannot Delete Backup - this backup cannot be deleted beacaus it is in use". I don't know how I can delete this old backup. Does anyone help me?
    Tks

    I'm having the same problem.
I just sold my iPad on eBay and will get the iPad mini Retina, so in the meantime I'm borrowing my brother's iPad.
I backed up my iPad, and restored it to my brother's one, and now I'm trying to delete the old backup, but I get this exact same message, and it's been about 9 hours since I did the restore.
To make matters worse, my 10GB subscription ends tomorrow, and I don't need any more than 5GB, and now I'm over the limit when I could delete this 1GB backup and not have to worry about the subscription ending.
I've tried deleting it from my iMac, iPhone, and this iPad.

    Hi Caveman337,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The resource below will explain how to delete an old iTunes backup.  Before you do this, I would suggest creating an iCloud backup of your iPhone.
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977
    Back up using iCloud
If you're using iCloud, it can automatically back up your content. Use these steps to turn on iCloud Backup:
Tap Settings > iCloud > Backup. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
Tap iCloud Backup to turn it on.
    Tap Back Up Now.
After you turn on iCloud Backup, iCloud will back up your content automatically. You can return to this screen to see when the last back up happened.
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/ht4946
    Where your backups are stored
The folder where your backup data is stored depends on your computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your data-backup routine. iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
    Delete a backup
If you want to delete a backup created by iTunes:
    Open iTunes Preferences:
    Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences. Learn how to turn on menus in Windows 7 and 8.
Click Devices. (The iOS device doesn't need to be connected.)
iTunes will show the phone number, International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, and serial number of the backed up iPhone when you position your mouse pointer over a backup. (Only the serial number will be shown for iPad and iPod touch). You can use this to find the backup you want to delete.
Select the backup you want to remove.
    Click Delete Backup.
When prompted, confirm that you want to remove the selected backup by clicking Delete Backup.
Click OK to close the iTunes Preferences Window.
Backups that have a date and time stamp in the backup name are copies of backups created by restoring the iOS device. The date and time in the left column are when the restore-from-backup occurred. The date and time in the right column are the last synced date; this shows how current the data is.
I hope this information helps ....

  • Time Machine not freeing up space with manual delete of old backups

I have time machine backing up an external RAID to a Drobo with 7.2TB of total space.  The total backup size as estimated by TM is 4.6TB.  This setup was running fine for me for a while, until I added some internal drives full of data to my Mac Pro, and forgot to tell TM to exclude them.  I didn't realize this until TM told me my backup disk was full.  Fine, so I excluded those drives, and then deleted all backups of those drives, as well as going back and deleting quite a few old backups in their entirety.  I even went and found about 500GB of data that I no longer needed, deleted it from my RAID and then again deleted all backups of that folder from TM.  But after all this, my drive still only has about 70GB of free space on it.  When I know at a minimum there should be 500GB free, if not 1-2TB free after all that spring cleaning.  How can I get that free space back?  It seems as if TM is holding it hostage.  I should add that slowly over the few days since deleting, my Drobo free space slowly creeps up.  Maybe about 10GB every hour when I go and check free space available.  Is this just TM taking forever to delete the old backups, even after the computer has been restarted, shut down, etc. multiple times?
I really don't want to have to erase the entire TM drive and start over, as it takes days to backup 4.6TB of data and slows down my whole system.  Any help is appreciated!

I have no direct experience with a Drobo, but in many threads about them, as with many other 3rd-party NASs, either the built-in software creates a sparse bundle, or the instructions have the user do so.
But yes, a sparse bundle is a sparse bundle is a sparse bundle , so if you can locate it via the Finder, and have permission to it, you should be able to compact it manually, per those instructions.
If not, you'll have to talk with the Drobo folks.

  • Time Machine deleted my old backups and crapped out midstream

I had just gotten my failing hard drive replaced, and restored from Time Machine backup. So far so good.
So a week later, I wanted to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but figured I should be responsible and run Time Machine backup again before doing the upgrade just in case something goes wrong.
The Mac has a 4TB drive, which has 2TB free. The backup drive is a 4TB external drive, which has (or had) Time Machine backups going back two years or so. It still had over a TB of space left. I clicked on Backup Now and let it run overnight. I noticed it said "Deleting old backup to make room" or something like that, which I thought was normal.
I woke up in the morning to find that Time Machine had crapped out in the middle, and said that it couldn't complete. I realized that it had deleted all my old backups. It didn't need to do that, since the only files that had changed would have been less than a GB, and it had over a TB of space to work with.
It must have thought that everything on the drive had changed since the last backup, and it wanted to backup the entire drive. As such it tried deleting all my old backups! But it failed, and stopped in the middle.
Now I have a drive that still says there is only 1.2 TB of space on the drive, but I can't see the files! Even with Tinkertool, I can't see anything beyond the one most recent backup.
Can these files be recovered? I am totally ticked that there isn't some kind of confirmation like "Are you sure you want to delete X?"
I actually need to have some of these older backups, as they include files that had been deleted before the latest backup that I may need to retrieve. Any hard drive experts out there? Any terminal commands that can make these files accessible, even if I have to retrieve them manually?

To clarify, this all happened under Snow Leopard as I had said. My profile lists Tiger, since I haven't cared to update my personal profile since using that OS, and in fact I still use Tiger among other versions. I manage a lot of users. And I never got to upgrade to Mountain Lion on this system, as explained in the post above. So I don't see the confusion.
I don't think the model of Mac makes a difference for this type of problem, but in case it does, the incident was on a 2010 Intel iMac with a 4TB hard drive and 8GB of RAM. I would have mentioned that if this was a problem with hardware specific to the model of Mac. But this is more of a universal issue.
But to stay on topic, I'm guessing my old backups are toast. But if anybody has any experience with recovering from Time Machine deleting their old backups, I would be happy to hear from them. In the meantime, I am going to try to do some old fashioned file recovery, and see what I can salvage.

Time Machine is not for archiving files. it keeps a record, backup, of what is on the internal hard drive in your system. Deleting files on the internal hard drive will eventually remove those files from the TM backup files.
Not sure there is anyway to recover them as TM thinks you no longer wanted or needed those files because you deleted them from the internal drive.
    Good Luck.

  • How to delete the old backup in time machine?

    Hi all,
As I have use the TM for a year, the backup folder is on a network dirve. HOw can I delete the old backup (eg 6 months ago) in order to release more space?
    Thank you
    Gary

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
I'll assume you mean a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device, not a Time Capsule or external HD connected to a Time Capsule or other Mac on your network.
If so, you can delete individual backups via Time Machine. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). That may not seem to gain any space, since the backups are in a rather odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ It won't shrink automatically when you delete things, but the space will be reused for new backups.
You may be able to limit the size of the backups by limiting the amount of space available to Time Machine on the NAS, but you'll have to use whatever facilities the NAS supplies, not OSX. Some allow the disk to be partitioned as on a normal disk, or allocate space to shares.

  • Time machine has deleted all old backups

Hi, I'm desperate! time machine has all the old backups deleted on my time capsule, only today's early still a backup available. It was still 1TB space on the hard disk. What did I do wrong? There was no warning!

Time Machine will not delete your old backups unless it starts to run out of space on the hard drive......or.....your backups have become corrupted and Time Machine cannot repair them.
In the latter case, a message like this will appear on your screen:
Do you recall seeing this message recently?

  • HT5312 My email associated with my iCloud ID has been deleted and my birthday is wrong in the system for the security question. Therefore, I can't delete my old iCloud ID in order to have my new ID on my phone.

My email associated with my iCloud ID has been deleted and my birthday is wrong in the system for the security question. Therefore, I can't delete my old iCloud ID in order to have my new ID on my phone. HELP!

If the old ID is yours, and if your current ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

Ok, thanks!  I'm pretty new to having multiple apple products.  Another question though, if I delete, say Christmas music, from my device and it is still in itunes, will it automatically sync back to my device next time I sync it?
