  • If i delete iTunes off my computer will i lose all my music?

I wanted to know this because my iTunes won't open, and I figured if I deleted and re-installed it, that might fix the problem. But I don't want to lose all my songs.
    Any suggestions?

I have the same issue. How would I locate my music if I uninstall then reinstall itunes? The message I get when I try to open itunes is this:
THE ITUNES LIBRARY FILE IS LOCKED, ON A LOCKED DISK, OR YOU DO NOT HAVE WRITE PERMISSION FOR THIS FILE.
Can I fix this problem without trying the uninstall? If so, how? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • HT1923 I uninstalled iTunes on an old computer but first I installed iTunes on my new computer and backed up my songs. When I deleted iTunes from old computer, it wouldn't work on my new computer. Why? What do I dp?

I uninstalled iTunes on my old computer but first installed and copied my songs over to my new computer. When I deleted iTunes from old computer, iTunes quit working on new computer. What do I do?

One has nothing to do with the other.
What is or is not happening on the new computer in regards to iTunes.  We cannot offer assistance without specifics of the issue.

  • No matter what I do I cant delete itunes from my computer so I can install newest software.

no matter what I do I cant delete itunes from my computer so I can install the newest software?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • When using Time Machine, if I delete items from my computer, will they still be backed up to access later on my external hard drive? In other words, when time machine backs up again, will it delete the files from the back up?

When using Time Machine, if I delete items from my computer, will they still be backed up to access later on my external hard drive?
In other words, when time machine backs up again, will it delete the files from the back up that I have deleted from my computer?

No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted.

    Hey Cnsjj,
    Just make sure Automatic Downloads are set up for that publication;
Newsstand updates subscriptions only when using a Wi-Fi connection. If you aren't seeing the latest issue:
Verify that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network.
Check Settings > iTunes & App Store to verify that Automatic Downloads is enabled for that publication.

  • If I transfer my music library to a usb stick and delete my itunes from my computer will I still be able to "recover" my itunes from the cloud?

If I transfer my music library to a usb stick and delete my itunes account from my computer will I be able to recover my itunes account info from the cloud?

It depends on whihch IPad you purchased. The 16GB, the 32GB, or the 64GB for storage.
Tap Settings > General > About. You'll see Capacity in the list.
How Mac OS X and iOS report storage capacity
You get 5GB of free storage space with iCloud but you can purchase more if necessary.
Apple - iCloud - Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices
If you setup an iCloud account, it won't be necessary to sync your iPad media with iTunes. Everything is synced via your Wi-Fi network with iCloud.
If you do not want to use iCloud for storage and syncing, iTunes is the only software you can use to sync iTunes media with an iOS device.

  • My ipod will not charge from a wall socket but will charge using the same cable if the usb end is plugged into a computer or an airport power source. My iphone and ipad charge fine on the same cable usin ghte same wall plug in the same wall socket?

My ipod will not charge from a wall socket but will charge using the same cable if the usb end is plugged into a computer or directly into an airport power source. My iphone and ipad charge fine on the same cable using the same wall plug in the same wall socket. This makes no sense but I see that it has been posted as a problem elsewhere. This must be due to some kind of degredation of the Ipod. . It is not fixed by IOS resets as others have noted.
Has anyone asked Apple directly about this?

    Hi there Apples or Pears,

  • Should Itunes Match be deleting the music on my iphone and IPAD

Still trying to get this figured out.  I'm almost certain that yesterday, when I first did Itunes Match, that all the music that was already on the Iphone and Ipad was not deleted (despite the warning to the contrary) when I toggled the Itunes Match switch on both.
I'm almost certain that yesterday, even after turning Itunes Match had been turned on, the music was not deleted and as new songs were added (ie CDs ripped)they showed up on both devices with the cloud Icon.
That is consistent with what I read here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1163607/toggle_between_itunes_match_and_local_sy ncing.html
However, today, I re-downloaded some music after getting the higher quality versions with Itunes on my Mac.  I turned Itunes Match off on both my Iphone and IPad, thinking I would do a quick manual sync to the Mac, get all the songs put on each and then turn Itunes Match back on both.
I did so, but when I turned Itunes Match back on each, Itunes Match deleted all of my music, replacing all songs with the cloud icon now forcing me to redownload everything.  That seems inconsistent with what happened yesterday and is also inconsistent with the article above which seems to indicate that Itunes Match should be smart enough to realize the songs it doesn't need to delete.
Is the above article and my experience wrong?
    Thanks for the help!

What you are experiencing is normal. As soon as you turn on iTunes Match, it should wipe out all your songs that were manually put on your device and you will have to redownload. Its idiotic to me, but that is the way it is supposed to work. People have stated they sometimes fool the process, but it is supposed to remove them all.
Hope this helps. Down the road I wish they made it so you could do both, icloud and manual sync.

  • Home Sharing: Music App on iPhone and iPad skips from track to track without playing.

Home Sharing is working from my iMac, OSX 10.9.3, iTunes 11.2.2(3) to my AppleTV, 6.1.1. I can see my iTunes library and play/view music, video and photos. No problems.
I have problems when trying to do the same on my iPhone and iPad.
Using the Music app on my iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.1 I frequently have to re-connect to my iTunes library. However nothing will play in any mode. It just skips from one tune to the next right through to the end of the list without playing any of them.
Using the Music app on my iPad 2, iOS 7.1.1 connecting to my iTunes library is more reliable. Single tunes play through, albums & playlists play through all tunes in sequence. However if I select shuffle then it just skips from one tune to the next right through to the end of the list without playing any of them.
I have only tried sharing to my iPhone/iPad in the last few days so I have no experience of doing this on previous versions.

    Today
Music on iPad does not even give me the Sharing option.
Music on iPhone offers Sharing and does indeed connect to my iTunes library. It has all my albums on display. Whoopee you think, is ths a breakthrough? Unfortunately, NO. Play any album and it just skips from one tune to the next right through to the end of the list without playing any of them.
Please bear in mind that no infrastructure has changed during these posts. Same network, hardware and software.
    Conclusion:
Home Sharing is useless except between iMac and AppleTV.
Is there anyone out there in Apple land who can convince me otherwise?

  • Deleted itunes from my computer...?????

These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
iPodRip Software (Free trial: Mac & Windows)
    PodUtil Software (Mac & Windows)
YamiPod Software (Free: Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple & Free Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to ‘Manually manage songs & playlists’ – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod (or the lower ‘\iPod_Control’ sub-folder)
    10 - Click OK
-- The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes with its correct information
–-- This will take some time depending on your PC’s speed and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • Virus deleted Itunes from my computer, my songs were gone, I donwloaded ...

Ok, some sort of virus deleted many things from our computer, including itunes. We reinstalled it. WHen the virus deleted stuff it deleted all of the music on our computer. Before I figured out how to get the music off of my ipod and on to my itunes account I downloaded some new stuff. The new downloads are saved to the library and for some reason it won't let me sync the new downlaods without wanting to delete everything that is already on the ipod. *** happened? Any ideas?

    Hello Caseri,
Your iPod is still associating itself with your old iTunes library if you have yet to restore it via iTunes because iPods were set up to sync with one library only.
Restoring the iPod will delete all the files and content and set it back to its original default settings. This will allow you to sync the iPod with the new iTunes library.

  • I have two computers, if I delete songs from one computer will it also delete on the Cloud and on the other computer?

I have a macbook air for travel.  My itunes library is getting too big for this computer.  If I delete music on this computer, how can I be sure it won't also delete the same files on the Cloud and on my computer at home?

Use Windows Migration Assistant to copy all your user date to the MacBook.
See this -> About Windows Migration Assistant.
Using Home Sharing will transdfer the media files, but not the entire library (ratings, date added, artwork, playlists, etc.)
And as diesel vdub metioned, backup BEFORE you do anything.
