If i delete some media files in my IMac = it will delete in my time machine hard drive (connected via usb)?

I have film on IMac hard disk and copy of it in time machine removable hard disk (2tb).
If i delete film from my native, system IMac hard disk - it will be delete automatically in my removable hard disk or not?

You should ONLY use the TM drive for TM activity. If you were backing up using a Bootable Clone I would recommend the same thing. There are several reasons for this with a TM drive, first being that if you store data and TM info on a TM drive if that drive crashes (it's a mechanical device and they do break) not only will you have lost your data you will have lost the backup for it! Next is TM will eventually fill the HD, that is how TM works. Therefore if you place additional data on the TM drive you are shortening the useful life of the TM drive. In short if you want to store other data such as music, photographs and movies which tend to occupy a lot of HD space buy another EHD and save the media there. EHD's are inexpensive so there isn't any reason not to. TM will still back these up.
If you need help moving these libraries to an EHD then bookmark and use:
iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
iTunes: How to move the library to an EHD
iMovie: How to move the Library to an EHD
On my iMac I have 3 external HD's connected. Disk 1 is Time Machine, Disk 2 is a Bootable Clone backup and Disk 3 is for my media. I've been running this way for 4 years reliably.

Time Machine only shows the current copy of the file I am trying to restore. There is none of the time machine backup histories shown. I am running OSX 10.7.5. I see the backup files on my external Time Machine hard drive in the Backups.backupdb folder.
Time Machine does show the history of my Macintosh HD, but when I try to navigate to the folder I wish to restore the backup history disappears. I've been searching for answers and I have not found one that works for me.

  • Old Time Machine Hard Drive - Can't access files?

    Hi
I have just put an external hard drive I have not used for a approx a year into a spare bay in my Mac Pro.  It has HD video on it, but was surprised when I rebooted my machine to see it is a Time Machine drive (green and white desktop TM hard drive icon).  There is just under 400GB free space of the total 1TB drive, but can only access approx 260GB of that free space.
So, I am wondering if the remainder of the drive - approx 140GB is an old Time Machine backup from either Lion or Snow Leopard.
Time Machine can not see the files nor can I access them via Finder.  I only have Mountain Lion on my machine at present, but could partition my Boot SSD drive to add Lion or Snow Leopard on to it.
Is there any reason why I can't access these TM files if they do existing, or could there be other reasons why this is happening.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Sorry, I think it's the way I replied to your last question.
TM remains switched off from doing last clean install and have not used it this time.  I now use an SSD for my boot drive and all my important files I use as and when needed are stored on other hard drives.
TM at the moment is swtiched off, but with the paddlock open it is asking me to Select Backup Disk - is this what you meant in your last post?  Just wanted to clarify - thanks

  • "iTunes Media" file in "Previous iTunes Library" taking up 50Gb of much-needed hard drive space.  Can this be safely deleted?

    Hi everyone,
My 3.5 year old 15" Macbook Pro is running out of hard drive space, so I have been trying to clean out some of the dross.  I recently found that there is a file called "Previous iTunes Library" in my iTunes folder that is taking up approximately 50Gb of space.   I would love to delete this folder and reclaim the space, but I am not sure what it is or where it came from, and I don't want to lose music files accidentally. Can someone tell me (1) what this folder is and (2) if I can safely delete it?
Here is a screenshot of these folders and their sizes:
    Thanks for the help!

    Hello facetious1212,
Take a look at this part of the article named iTunes: What are the iTunes library files? Found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1660.
Tip: New versions of iTunes sometimes include enhancements to the iTunes library. When you open the new version of iTunes, iTunes upgrades your existing library to the new format and places a copy of the old library in the Previous Libraries folder. If everything goes fine during your upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, you can delete the older iTunes Library files.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Safe to delete file from Time Machine hard drive?

Is it safe to delete a file from an external hard drive that's being used for Time Machine backups? The file is not a backup -- it's a .dmg from the manufacturer of the hard drive. Other than that one file, I don't use the drive for anything other than Time Machine.
I'm just concerned because I don't want deleting the file to affect Time Machine in any way.
    Thank you.

I have done it without issue.

  • Whenever I try to transfer media files to either another pc on my network, or an external hard drive, the content starts to transfer but eventually loses internet conectivity? PC has no issue transferring files.

Whenever I try to transfer media files from my mc to either another PC on my network or to a network attached storage device, the transfer will start but eventually my internet connection will fail. The NAS is the "WD my book live". I have had no issues with my pc in downloading and uploading from the NAS. The mac can download from the NAS but, as already stated, will not upload. File sharing is turned on for all devices. Today I tried to transfer files directly from mac to PC and the same issue happened, which tells me it is an issue with the mac. I have seen this question around but have not seen any responses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Format the extra HDD to EXFAT as previously indicated.  There are two ways that can use to transferr the data.
    1.  Connect both drives to the PC and the copy the files to the newly formatted (EXFAT) drive from the HDD with the data .  Then connect the EXFAT drive to the MBP and transfer the data to same.
    2.  Connect both drives to the MBP and open DISK UTILITY>RESTORE.  Drag the drive with the data on it to the 'Source' field.  Drag the EXFAT drive to the 'Destination' field.  Click on the 'Restore' butt is on.  After the transfer has been completed, close DISK UTILITY and place the data on the MBP where you want it.
    Ciao.

  • Time machine hard drive for transfering files from 2010 MBP to rMBP

    Hello!
I have a couple of questions here!
I will be getting the rMBP in the next few weeks so want to do a bit of housekeeping before transferring across.
    1) What is the best way to clear my current MBP of files and applications that i dont use and are just taking up space? I currently have a 256GB hard drive with 8GB free - there should be no reason for this as my large audio/ Raw photo/ video editing files are on an external hard drive. So i think there must be a lot of flotsam and jetsam on there that needs to be removed as i don't want to carry that from computer to computer!
    2) Is Time machine the best option for this kind of service?
    3) Can anyone recommend an external hard drive for the job? I don't want to rely on thunderbolt ones at the moment so would it just be any usb hard drive seeing as Apple has sodded of firewire?
    Cheers
    K*

    OK, I'll bite:
    1) you can just delete the documents that you don't use by throwing them in the Trash. To delete apps and all associated files (and some will disagree with me or suggest another application) I recommend using AppDelete. I believe it's $13 or so but I have used AppZapper and AppCleaner as well but find that AppDelete finds all associated files.
    2) After you've rid yourself of your 'junk' files, I recommend using Time Machine on a dedicated or partitioned hard drive for backups. When you get your new machine, you can just use Time Machine to restore all of your settings, apps, documents, etc. For everything you ever wanted to know about Time Machine, see  http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html.
    3) A USB drive is definitely the way to go. I would recommend the G-Drive series from Hitachi here. They have all sorts of connections, including USB 2.0 and Firewire 800. When Apple (finally) releases their Thunderbolt>FW800 adapter, you'll be ready. Others might recommend USB 3.0 drives for the speed but I've seen too many posts of, in particular, Western Digital USB 3.0 drives that have problems with the 2012 Macs to go the USB 3.0 route right now. Maybe someone will jump in and recommend a USB 3.0 drive that they actually have working on a 2012 MBP?
    Good luck,
    Clinton

    Hello everyone.
I recently broke my macbook, and had to replace it with a pc laptop. I have my data saved on a time machine enabled external hard drive.
How can I use that hard drive to put my files (music/word documents) to the pc?

Sadly, in your case, the TM backup is practically useless. TM provides a backup primarily for the machine to which it is connected, and then, only through the TM interface engine, never directly.
The files are not stored in a linear manner as would be in a regular backup - they are linked to each other and each "file" only represents a "delta" or incremental backup unit. The TM engine knows how to reconnect all the links to create the proper file.
What you need to do is get another Macbook similar to yours, and see if you can connect to the TM backup with TM. If you can, then you can restore the files and them copy them onto a FAT32 formatted external HD.
If you network the borrowed Mac with the PC, you can transfer the files over the network, but in any case, you have to use the TM engine to do so.
The only files on the TM backup that are most likely "normal" would be the original files created during the first backup.

  • HT201250 I just had a new hard drive installed in my iMac.  Migration manager cannot see my external Time Machine hard drive to restore the files and applications.  The drive is operational in Finder

I cannot seem to migrate the full time machine backup from an external hard drive back to the new hard drive.  Finder sees the drive and files.  When I use Migration managers, it only sees the computer hard drive after I select the time machine option to restore the files.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
With what OS X version did you make the backup? If it was the same as the version you are using now, you don't have to use Migration Assistant to restore the backup. Instead, there's a safer and better method, but you will lose all the changes you have made since the last time you made the backup.
Just hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery. Then, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup, and follow its steps. Also, you will be able to select the backup you want to restore

  • After installing mountain lion, can i back up all my files from external time machine hard drive if i did the back up under Lion?

Hi. Want to find out before installing new Mountain Lion if I will be able to restore all my files (music, documents....) from my external hird drive if the back up was done under Lion. Or it is better to simply copy everything, altough it would be good to keep iTunes, contacts etc as well as they are at the moment. Could someone please tell me how to do it so I can go on with it and will not have to struggle after the installation? Many thanks.

You can do this. If you did an OS X Mountain Lion clean install, it will ask you to restore a backup, so connect a Time Machine disk and restore that

  • Is iCloud as good to back up files when an iMac 2007 model does not have an external hard drive is this enough to find files and apps at another time

I have given my iMac 2007 model running mountain lion OSX 10.8.3 to a friend and she doesn't have an external hard drive to back up would using iCloud be as good to back up files pictures etc and can I find them again if lost please.

These are the iCloud storage options: http://www.apple.com/icloud/includes/lightbox-storage.html
    Also bear in mind that:
    1. restoring data over icloud takes time
    2. iCloud is not designed as a replacement to Time Machine.

  • I need to move my files from my imac to the cloud to free up my hard drive?

I have 1gb ram 320gb hard drive thats full what is the easiest way for a person to move files i.e. music, pics ...... to free up my hard drive and possible to expand the ram to 2gb?
I'am a novice at computers but want to learn.

Plug in an external hard drive and start moving things you don't need always available onto that hard drive.
To upgrade the RAM, go to Crucial, Other World Computing, or MemoryTen and use their configurator to determine the type of RAM you can use.
Here is Apple's documentation on installing it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423

  • I accidentally imported all media files on my iMac into iMovie.

I accidentally imported all media files on my iMac into iMovie. Now I have over 10,000 "clips" in a single event library. It is massive and causing performance issues. Some are photos, some are movies, some are music/voice memos and many are stock computer icons/images. If I delete them from iMove (via move to trash) via select all, am I deleting them from iMovie or from my iMac?

No problem!  Also, a quick bit of information.  If you did not already know this, when you empty the trash, it does not actually delete your files.  It just allows the space that those files were taking up to be overwritten.  That's why you can go to your Time Machine and recover these files.  So, your computer will not improve in the speed department that much after deletion.  I'm pretty sure there's a way to completely wipe files off of your computer, therefore actually regenerating space, however I do not know how to get through that process.  You may want to ask this in a new separate discussion.  Also, please respond to my reply (with a link) right after your add the conversation if you want to create the thread, because I'd like to know too, based on the fact that I cleared 259.82GB off of my computer within the last few months in one sitting.

    A Espinoza,
The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities.  So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.
