If I dont shut my Mac off, does it use more ram?

I have noticed that if I dont shut down my mac (just put it to sleep when I'm not using it) I have less free ram.  I have 16 gigs installed on my Macbook Pro, and right now I have 12.41 gigs free.  All I am using is chrome and mail.  If someone could give me an answer I would appreciate it.

whatever is loaded in your browser is also loaded into RAM - even if you put your macbook to sleep - the RAM will remain at whatever you see until you close all your apps - 12.41GB of free RAM is still alot - you won't run out.
remember, a lot of users here still running along with 4GB.

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

  • Please, the battery of my mac air does not last more than two hours, it's been over 30 days I sent for technical assistance and nothing! I am very disappointed with the mac air, I had a very different expectation of apples products!!

Maybe the problem is not your MB Air......
    Try these:
Make sure bluetooth is turned off if you're not using it.
Set your screen brightness to 4 bars.
See what's loading in your login items.  Delete the ones you don't need.
Open Activity Monitor - under All Processes see what's using most of your CPU's resources.
Highlight the ones with the highest %CPU and hit quit process.
Remember that when Apple says that your battery should last 7 hours, they tested it just browsing the web and not have anything open in the background and screen is set at 50% brightness.

  • Does lte use more data when it's turned on

When running an IPad from cellular, does it use more bandwidth with LTE turned on.

    Not more data, just faster.

  • Does filevault use more disk space?

Does filevault use more disk space than when not using it?  I'm running an SSD drive and need to keep usage to a minimum.  Thx

The difference is about 200 MB, regardless of the size of the volume.

  • Does LTE use more data usage than 4G?

Does LTE use more data usage than 4G?

    The question makes no sense.
LTE and 4G are types of connections. They do not use Data, they allow your apps and services on the iPhone or iPad to use the Data access.
In most cases 4G is slightly slower than LTE.

  • All of a sudden my iPhone 4S keeps shutting the sound off when I use the google app

When I use the google application on my iPhone 4S it shuts the sound off on the hole phone so I have to go into the settings and change the ringer and alerts so that the sounds will work again.

Uninstall the app and reinstall it. If it persists dont use it. simple

  • Why does OS7 use more battery on iphone?

Upgraded to OS7 from 6.1.4 which was much better on battery life. Why does OS 7 use so much battery and how can I reinstall OS6?
Its using approx 10% of battery life every hour, when not using the phone and all apps switched off, push notifications off etc - if I was actually using the phone and making calls battery will be dead in no time!

why?i rip all my cd's in wma,y does wma files use more battery life?
Due to higher compression rate of WMA. The player will need higher processing power to process it thus the higher battery consumption but it should not affect it very much around 0-5% more only.

  • Why does firefox use more memory the longer it's open?

Firefox goes from using 90,000k when first opened to 293,000k after a couple of hours. It didn't used to go up that high. This is just Firefox this doesn't count what plugin container uses. This just started happening where it would get this high. I've not installed any new addons recently. The addons I do have are foxy tunes, adblock plus, Java console, Java quickstarter, move media player 7, Memory fox, Microsoft.net frame work assistance, personas, and yontoon layers. I've tried running in safe mode and disabling all the addons and I've still got the same result. I'm using firefox 3.618.

Sometimes application and programs don't report to the OS that it is no longer using the Ram and therefore the Ram Appears in use. Go to the Mac App Store and download a free Application called Free Memory. It's a useful tool that allows you to free that Ram that is not being used right from the Menu Bar.

  • My Macbook keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive for periods of time when I shut my mac off or when I close the lid.

Sometimes it starts working again when I turn it back on and sometimes it doesn't. It's not the keyboard. I installed a new one and still have the same issues. I am not sure what to do to fix this problem. Has anyone experience this before? Any help would be much appreciated.

OK. That makes much more sense.
I would like you to create a new admin user with Users & Groups for testing purposes. Turn off auto-login if you have it enabled. Restart the computer and log into the new account. Test if the problem still exists or has ceased. If it has ceased then the issue is most likely something in your user account. You can start by using software like CockTail, Onyx, or Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner (look for them at www.macupdate.com) to clean up system, user, and font caches, check for old log files, etc. Do this all in your usual account, btw.
See how that helps your situation. If it's not in your user account, then it's a system issue. You can then try reinstalling to see if that helps:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How do I permanently delete the "Re Open  Windows when logging back in" choice? I want it to open to my home page, not where I shut the mac off.

How do I "Permanently" uncheck the box "Re open windows when logging back in"?

At this time there is no reliable way to permanently unselect that option. A quick way to unselect it just before logging out is to tap the space bar.

  • Ever since the update if I'm listen to my music and go to text and the autocorrect voice comes on it shuts my music off when it use to just lower my music while the voice over spoke then the music would go right on playing. Any solutions to this?

With the new ios 7 system on my iphone every time I listen to music and text or type something a the autocorrect VoiceOver comes on and shuts off my music and on the old system the music would lower the autocorrection would b spoke and then the music would continue. Is there any solution to this problem?

Never mind I figured it out. The best way is to go into settings>General>accessibility and under vision turn speak auto-text off. That way if u r listening to something and typing it still gives u the autocorrect option it just won't speak it so u won't have to keep going back into whatever u r listening to and turning it back on. Thanks anyway

  • Does 10.4.7 use more RAM?

I have been running 10.4.5 until yesterday when I erase and installed, and let Software Update install 10.4.7 on my Mini.
I also use Menu Meters and was shocked to see that about 285 MB were being used by the OS, Safari, Mail, Adium and xchat aqua...I think it's a lot considering most of the apps were really just sitting there, and I wasn't watching Video Bomb in Safari.
I noticed something called kernel task is taking between 92 and 98 MB. don't know if this is normal, but under 10.4.5, I seem to have only used 150 or 160 or so MB of RAM withe the same apps open as above.
is it me, or does 10.4.7 use a significant amount of RAM more. To me, 10% is significant.
    thank you!
    r

In that case there isn't much you can do. However, unless you are actually running out of memory I wouldn't worry too much about it. OS X's memory management is pretty good, and as long as you have ample space on the hard drive for swap space there should be little need for concern. However, if you find you are experiencing a lot of disk thrashing and extreme slowdowns when memory is maxed, then you need to quit some applications to avoid continued use of VM. • Does Bridge use Less Ram than Elements?

I have been running PSE 11, and recently moved on to PSCC.  I still use PSE for sorting and accessing my images, but find that PSCC is very slow when PSE is open.  Presumably this is because PSE is employing a lot of RAM.  Do you think that changing to Bridge as opposed to PSE might make PSCC operate more efficiently?

I suppose this depends on the power of your computer but why not try it and see for yourself?
