Do I need to back up the stuff on my iPad before downloading iOS 5.1?

It's advisable to copy any important content off it first - if it's an iPad 2 then it will be updated to iOS 6 not iOS 5.1 (so you will lost the built-in YouTube app and the Maps will change). You can copy any purchases from the iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. You can also copy photos and any important documents off the iPad e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. Then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
And start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

Okay, I'm going to try and make as much sense as I possibly can without confusing people. I hope someone can help! So when I downloaded the iOS 7 update one 'major' change I noticed was that my album art in iTunes had automatically changed for me. It was really cool, more up-to-date, and overall enjoyed how it looked. Made it look a lot neater than my own album art I had put on there. Sorry no backup - no pictures.
Yes phone will automatically backup to icloud when on wifi and phone is charge, but your phone storage was full so it stop backing up.

After you have Recovered your Device...

If the old ID is yours, and if it is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

I told you, I can't restore iOS. In order to restore my iPad, I need to update it to iOS 7.0.4, but my iPad needs available space to update, but I don't have any. If it is asking for account details then it might just need you to confirm your account before it lets you proceed. Maybe the terms and conditions changed since last time or something like that. Try signing into your Apple account in iTunes on a computer first to check that. Then restart the phone and try again.

I can't upgrade from IOS 6.0.1 to IOS 7.1.1 on my iPad 2. iPad says it has downloaded IOS 7.0.3 but cannot verify the installation if I try and install it. It claims that I have lost internet connection, which I have not. I cannot restore or update the iPad in iTunes either, if I try to, I get an error message which says that I 'do not have permission to access the requested resource'. I am using the latest version of iTunes on Windows 8. I have tried putting the iPad in recovery mode and restoring it with iTunes, the result is the same.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Which operating system are you using?
Have you tried Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6 to get either camera raw 8.3 or 8.7.1, which should enable photoshop cs6 to open the canon 5D Mark III files.
(version of camera raw depends on your operating system)
If that doesn't work try one of the following camera raw plugin installers:

Before downloading ANY upgrade, one should always back up the device to ones computer! Then, if there are problems, ones data is saved. When new software is downloaded and installed, your device is not wiped clean. When you re-start, all your data should be there. If it isn't, you can then use Restore and all your data that was backed up will once again be there.

If you do not have a local copy of a song which you have purchased (i.e. it is available via iTunes in the Cloud), you may need to redownload it before you can transfer it to your device. You may find the following article helpful:

You need to backup files if you are trying to write the new OS X on the previous OS X partition. You will end up loosing all files & data if you replace the Mavericks with the old OS Xon same disk. But if you have another partition ready for the Mavericks then no worries. I did the same when I downloaded 10.9 from Apple. I too had Stellar Drive Clone software ready to backup my entire hdd. Actually, you should have a backup utility for one or many reasons.
