If i have a macbook pro from 2008 should i buy a new apple laptop?

I need help should i buy a new laptop or should i just stick with my apple macbook from 2008?

if you're happy with your Mac, and it's running like it should, keep using it.
On the other hand, the new Mac OS X Mavericks is due out sometime this fall. If you're thinking of a new Mac you may want to wait until you can purchase one with Mavericks pre installed.

I have a MacBook Pro from 2010 and was wondering if it's possible to get FaceTime and/or iMessage on the laptop. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, please let me know how! Thanks!

Why yes, yes it is! I see that you are running 10.6.8, so the best soultion would be to upgrade to Mavericks. If I am not mistaken, it is at no cost to you. Just go to the Mac App Store & find the Mavericks upgrade. It should be one of the more popular options on the featured page.
    Good luck!

Sending by Dropbox where, To who, to what computer? As your does not start up.
You need to take at least the OS disc to a work Mac computer and create DMG from the OS install disc then restore that DMG to USB thumb drive. Then you can boot the computer from that thumb drive and install the OS. That is if your hard drive is functioning correctly.
Then you can use the App disc in the external CD/DVD drive to load up all the included Applications that come with your version of OS X.

    Reinstall OS X.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    OR
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

    All,
I thought it may be related to spaces in the path in which the script was called from. I tried having the ODBC command script in another directory but the same thing happens. It will give me the "CONFIGSYSDSN: Unable to create a data source for the 'Oracle in OraClient10g_home1' driver: Could not load the setup or translator library with error code -2147467259". As soon as the script is done running I can manually double click the script and it adds the DSN fine.

I always suggest going to monoprice.com for cheap priced and good quality cables, adapters, aother videio/audio realated hardware.years.
    Example:
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
You can search for the cable of desired length there as well.
Been using monoprice for years.   Excellent source for this kind of stuff.

  • I have Macbook Pro on order, should I wait for new "iBook"?

I'll be using the mac for the iLife software mostly. iMovie, iPhoto and Garageband. How much do you think the price difference and speed difference will be? I'm pretty sure I'm sticking with the MacBook Pro. I've got the stock 1.83 on order, after rebates it will cost me about $1890.

If the Intel iBook (or non-"pro" MacBook) is announced at apples anouncement next week people should be able to know more specifically about how it compares and what the price should be.
Many speculate a 13" widescreen MacBook with a single intel processor will be comeing out that should be comperable in speed to the current powerbook (or faster). This is all spec but people do know its coming.
People also think it is going to be annoucned at the event and availble around april. I am keeping my MBP on order and then if something peaks my interest at the annoucement I have time to switch.
I think it depends on price and actual performance, since noone knows exactly what the new iBook is yet its hard to speculate at this time.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro - Pristine Condition - should I buy?

I'm a PC user -- not a conscious decision, just what I started and stuck with because it was easier. I've always salivated at the thought of having a Mac, but it was always cost-prohibitive.
HOWEVER, I' have the opportunity now to buy an early 2011 MacBook Pro -- standard 4GB RAM, 500 HD, non-retina, you MAC users know the specs without me spelling it out. This machine is in pristine condition -- they barely used it. Literally not a scratch on it. I took it for a diagnostic at a local computer repair store and they verified the battery and hard drive were in supreme condition. The seller was originally asking $750, but because she knows me she's willing to come down to my budget of $600. I've checked eBay selling prices and this seems fair especially considering the condition, but I thought I'd check with you experts first. My other real question is, I'm a photographer and would like to use this machine mainly for programs like Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe suite of products -- what kind of upgrades would I have to make to the machine so that those programs would run smoothly? The first things someone suggested was upgrading to 16GB of RAM -- that's an extra $200 right there. Would it be better to look for a newer machine?
    Thanks in advance.

    Well I ran it here:

So if it is indeed a 2012 then that's a great deal. Did you verify that it is a 2012? Because there are issues with the 2011s. You can run the serial number here and verify the year:

I would at least bump the RAM to 8 GB and install an SSD from OWC:

  • I need to buy a new hard drive for my MacBook Pro. What should I buy?

Should I buy a 2TB SATA Hard Disk Drive Kit for Mac Pro? Or is this just a kit and not the drive?

Or is this just a kit and not the drive?
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but the nature of your question implies that you should shop for one from a company well known to support Macs, can help you decide what you need, how to install it, and provide free technical support should you require it. OWC / MacSales can do all that and their prices are as good as any you are likely to find from anyone else.

  • Start up issues on MacBook Pro from 2008

My mac book on wich my life depends, got "sick" and can't start up.
two weeks ago I tried to install an external HD to have a back up copy of my stuff, everything looked fine until I restarted it, it restarted really slowly and when it tried to sign up online for the software that came with the HD, I order it to go ahead, it got really slow, since the internet was not hooked up I thought: "the computer just got ordered to go online and couldn't" so I decided to restart it, but it never did, it just sort of freezes on the blue screen after the apple, I can move the cursor and it gives signs of being working, like it goes to sleep if I leave it trying to boot, but it was not until today, I got an external cd reader (because mine fried 'cause looks like my computer has no "airway" as the tech tried to explain me so it overheats) I noticed that at the end of all the "thinking" it does, it asks for my user and password on a black screen named darwin, but what username? I do remember my password to install but never got to enter the user name? how can I retrieve it? as well as the password? just in case, also is this going to start up my computer? and is there another way to start it up without going through this? I tried to start in safe mode but it just turns off, does this means my computer is done? and "my life missing"? also tried several instructions from the support forum but nothing has worked so far.
Thanks for your time and support,
    A.Ibarra
