If i have Dns Client service running, is it necessary to enable dns prefetch in the about:config section?

I've been wondering this for a while and can't seem to find the answer.
Whenever i set network.dns.disablePrefetch to true, the browser seems to load a bit more smoothly and even with the pref. disabled, the dns client service seems to still cache dns whenever i check on cmd using the ipconfig /displaydns command.
Does this mean that the browser still fetches dns even with the pref disabled?

I'm not really sure if it speeds up the loading process or not since it's a bit hard to tell but like i said, the loading is smoother.
Is Dns Client service different from Dns prefetch?

  • DNS Client Service Issues

    Hi all,
    We seem to be having some odd issues with about 50% of our Windows 7 clients.  I'll give you a brief run down of what is occurring.
    Server 2008 R2 Domain serving about 50 clients.  Having changed a static entry in DNS to point an A record to a new server, the Windows 7 clients randomly can't resolve the IP.
    So on testing using either the FQDN or just the host name the request doesn't resolve using ping.
    Tried using NSLOOKUP and NSLOOKUP resolves just fine.
    Tried ping again and no joy.  Turned off the DNS Client Service and instantly the host name resolved to the correct IP.
    Restart the DNS Client Service and there's about a 25% chance the hostname will no longer resolve.  On ALL of the PCs that have this issue.  Stopping or restarting the DNS Client  Service resolves the problem.
    Also it should be noted that running ipconfig /flushdns has no effect and the host still doesn't resolve to the IP.  ONLY stopping the DNS Client service on the Windows 7 PCs does the trick.
    Your suggestions are most welcome!
    Thanks,
    Simon.

    Hi Yolanda,
    Nothing in any event log anywhere and I've checked all the AV logs and run scans already, drivers are up to date.  Also there is no firewalling at the client end.
    Had a read through the NRPT doc and I don't think that is relevant as the host they are trying to get to doesn't have anything different to anything else in the DNS Domain.  All hosts are of the form host.contoso.com.  All we've done is change
    the IP address on one of the hosts manually within DNS.
    It is almost as if on a reboot, the DNS Client Service picks up an old copy of the cache and refuses to overwrite it.
    I'm considering changing the Parameters of the service to reduce the TTL of the cached entries from the default of one day to one hour and turn off caching of negative responses as follows:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Dnscache\Parameters]
    "MaxCacheTtl"=dword:e10
    "MaxNegativeCacheTtl"=dword:0
    Thanks,
    Simon.

  • DNS client service issue

    I’ve got a DNS client service issue:
    I have a webserver in my local Domain, which is accessible locally only.
    One client machine with Windows Server 2012 sometimes cannot access the websites situated on this local webserver. Its event viewer does not contain any issues. The machine can still access the internet. The thing I need to do then, is to restart the DNS client
    service on this Windows Server client. After that these local websites are reachable again. The DNS Server is installed on the DC.
    What approach could I follow to solve this issue?
    Patrick

    Are you using the fqdn (host.domain.tld), a single label name or a custom dns name?
    If you use the single label name, dns name resolution depends on the suffixes, make sure these are configured.
    If the issue occurs, you could use nslookup to check if the communication with all configured dns servers is working and the required records are there.
    Use ping to check if the correct ip with FQDN is returned. No FQDN implies netbios was used for name resolution - no good -> check the dns configuration
    If you use a custom dns name, check what IP it resolves (ping/nslookup); is it a server local IP? If not, check if the issue resolves by putting the dns alias in the hostsfile with a local ip (or 127.0.0.1 if the bindings for your site allow)
    The issue might also be solely related to the dns cache maintained by the service. You could check if ipconfig /flushdns resolves the issue to confirm. Their is not much configuration or debugging info available on this, but issues I've seen all boil down
    to dns servers not being corretcly configured on the client's ip settings.
    You could enable the DNS Client Events operational log (eventviewer->applications and services logs\Microsoft\Windows to maybe get more info on the issue.

  • Airport Express not showing in iTunes with Cisco VPN Client Service Running

    As soon as I stop my VPN Client Service in Services... the AX instanly appears in iTunes... If I restart the service AX can't be found. Does anyone know a workaround so they can co-exist on an XP machine?

    Yes, that is called "split tunneling" and is a feature, if you will, of the Cisco VPN (hardware and your VPN client). Unless "split tunneling" is enabled AT THE SERVER, all of your traffic will flow through the VPN, including that meant for your local AX.
    If you had an ethernet printer, as I do, you'd also find you couldn't print while on the VPN.
    The intent is to protect your company's internal network from anything that might be on your computer (say, malware trying to phone home or do other nefarious stuff).
    Really, there is not much you can do, other than ask your IT folks to enable local LAN access for you.

  • Self Service Portal Intermittently does not show all my requests in the "My Requests" section

    I have some customers reporting that they are missing requests in the "My Requests" section of the self service portal intermittently, i.e when they log in one time they will only see a couple of work-items, other times they will see all of them.
    Has any one seen this?  Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?  I have taken a look at the silverlight logs and there seems to be no logged errors.

    It sounds like "the bug".
    Next time it happens, try this:
    -- Step 1 Clean the execution plan cache
    dbcc freeproccache
    -- Step 2 Reproduce the problem and run the following query
    SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_query_stats AS qs
    CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(sql_handle)
    CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_text_query_plan(qs.plan_handle, qs.statement_start_offset, qs.statement_end_offset) AS qp
    WHERE text LIKE N'%Composite_Select_Path_180f5706-3d05-4bbc-ca2d-c33624fdb3c8%';
    GO
    -- Step 3 Modify SQL Query and execute it
    EXECUTE sp_create_plan_guide_from_handle
        @name =  N'Guide1',
        @plan_handle = 0x06000500EEBEEF2940016668010000000000000000000000,
    -- please replace this value with the plan handle discovered in step 2
        @statement_start_offset = 966;
    -- please replace this value with the start_offset discovered in step 2
    -- Step 4 To see current plan guides
    select * from sys.plan_guides
                    -- Step 5 (only if Rollback is needed)
    EXEC sp_control_plan_guide N'DROP', N'Guide1';

    Several Questions:
    1.  Under USER Setup.....theres more than just my standard account and my ADMINISTRATOR account.  iM WORRIED it might be a rootkit or malware?  Above my standard user and Admin account there is a "USER" account and on top of that

    2.  Still in the USER Setup, but back at menu, I saw a link "Edit My Environment Variables".    I haven't changed anything, but I see in the top window it says TEMP on the left, then %USERPROFILE%AppData\Locaton......then down
    in system variables theres a bunch of files, almost like this thing is getting ready to ship out some of my info to a hacker thru this thing, but I have no idea.  Some of the system variables are: asl.log, CLASSPATH,ComSPec, FP_NO_HOST_C, plenty

    and this am early it completed and removed (trojandownloader).......what can I do?

    Hi,
    If it worked previously, a quick solution is to run System Restore and get back to the previous status when the issue didn’t occur for a test:
    System Restore:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/system-restore-frequently-asked-questions/
    I supect these accounts are created by the malware. You can remove it by deleting it:
    Delete a user account:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/delete-a-user-account
    Also, try to update your anti-virus definitions and run a full system scan again.
    Hope it helps.

    thanks

    you can't add a partition in between - you put Windows to a new partition number.
    GPT (GUID)
    EFI
    Mac HFS
    Lion Recovery
    Windows
    And now you have two HFS
    One partition and one Windows (plus Lion Recovery).
    If you were to have more, it can't be before Windows for one thing.

  • I used to have AVG free antivirus software on my computer. I uninstalled it, but every time I open Firefox and do a search, it comes up with AVG Secure Search results. I have tried the about:config stuff from the forums, but it is to no avail.

    Had AVG free version. After Firefox updated to the newest version, AVG Secure Search results are the default. I have researched the issue for the past 3 days and have tried every option available on forums, etc. Nothing seems to work. This is very annoying and I'm about ready to switch to google chrome.

    I ended up finding a solution.....went to Firefox tab on top left of browser screen. Went to help, restart with add-ons disabled. This takes you to the Firefox Safe Mode text box. Select "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults. This seems to have worked, as there is no longer an AVG Secure Search directed screen. Also, I installed Avast. Have had it on my tower PC and another laptop for 2 years with no issue. Screw AVG!!!

  • Trying to change the cache size of FF3.6 from 75meg to a larger size, it only applies on a per session basis. i check the about:config and the changes have applied but when i restart FF it has reset itself to 75 :(

    as per the question, tried to up the cache from 75meg to 300meg but it resets after i restart firefox, have tried to change to various cache sizes but to no avail.
    -=EDIT=-
    it must be something to do with the profile, as when i set up a new profile in the manager, the cache size problem no longer appears. but now, how to repair my profile

    ok, nothing in that text file helped but the original file that it was based on pointed me in the direction that it might be an extension. The only extensions i have are NoScript and FasterFox Lite version....
    I have now traced the fault to lie with FasterFox... if you are not familiar with fasterfox it speeds up internet connections in firefox... several of the options are presets... but when i selected custom it gave me the option of a cache setting, which was set to 75megs.
    I have now changed that cache setting in fasterfox to 300 Megs and it is now persistant in firefox on restart.
    hopefully this information will be helpful to other people in the future that suffer the same problem.
    Thanks for your help TonyE, its greatly appreciated

  • The proxy settings supplied by my work's IT dept. don't work with Firefox on my Nexus. I have entered them in the about:config settings list but to no avail.

    I have tried to change the config settings in line with a lsited posting, and these are:
    network.proxy.type =1
    network.proxy.http = setting from IT dept.
    network.proxy.http_port = 8080
    Is there anything else I should do?

    Are you experiencing this issue with another browser?

  • The "about:config" move to restore the seach bar didn't work. I'm running OSX 10.9.5 on AOL/Firefox 37.0.1 on a mid 2007 intel iMac

    I changed the "browser.search.show.OneOffButtons" boolean to "False" and restarted Firefox. When it didn't restore the search bar I went back and made sure it was entered as "False" and restarted again - no go.
    I don't know where to go to search - Am I missing something obvious?
    Thanks

    Maybe this isn't supported or otherwise overridden by the Firefox version that you use.
    Download a new copy of the Firefox application from the Mozilla server and save the disk image file to the desktop
    *Firefox 37.0.1: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
    *Trash the current Firefox application (open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re)install
    *Install the new version that you have downloaded
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Installing+Firefox+on+Mac
    Your personal data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox.
