If I have my itunes libarary on an external hard drive and connect it to someone else's computer, will it replace their itunes library?

My computer is no longer working.  I need to work with itunes and my boyfriend said I should be able to just connect my external hard drive to his computer to use all my music.  If I open my library on his computer I want to make sure all of his library is safe and they are not combined.

If you want your library to be truly portable then you need the database files on the drive as well as the media. Click the icon that launches iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. (If you don't get that prompt close iTunes and try again.) Click Create and browse to the root of your external drive. I'd suggest you create the library there as X:\iTunes where X: is the drive letter. Once the library has been created move the media folder from its current location on the drive into X:\iTunes\iTunes Media before importing it to the library with File > Add folder to library. That way the library will work properly when connected to another computer using the shift-start-iTunes method and the Choose option, regardless of the drive letter that has been assigned. Use this method to swtich back to your friend's library when you are done.
If you or your boyfriend's media folders are not in the normal location of an iTunes Media folder inside the main iTunes folder then when switching between libraries you may also need to correct the path to the media folder. You should also be aware that preferences for Keep... and Copy... may be preserved when switching libraries, so if you have different requirements check that the correct settings are in place after any change over.
If your iPad classic was set to sync with your library then iTunes may want to wipe and reload it. If all the content has been found on the external drive this should not present a problem but if needed see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for further advice.
For more information on "portable" libraries see make a split library portable.

I have itunes directory on an external hard drive and want to direct a new installation of itunes on windows 8 to use it. I tried holding down ctrl and clicking itunes and after many tries got it to work one time. When I went back in later it had reverted back to a blank version of itunes and I cant get ctrl to work again. Any other ideas?

This is sometimes caused by a problem with the iTunesPrefs.xml file, normally found at C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml. Try dragging this to the desktop and trying again.
Alternatively the problem may be that you have McAfee AV and it is preventing iTunes from updating the same file and thus causing the problem. See Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml? for details.

  • Is it possible to keep all iTunes media on an external hard drive and not on my Mac Book and have ITunes still function?

Let me begin by saying I'm new to the Mac world as well as to the realm of online forums so I apologize if this is a question that was already asked and/or if it is a very noobish question...
But anyway, I just recently got the new Macbook Pro 15" with RD and I am curious if I can keep all of my Itunes media on an external hard drive without keeping any of it on the Macbook itself and have Itunes still function (when the HD is connected of course). I am trying to keep the computer memory clutter free and not fill it up with music and stuff so I want to keep all of my media on a 1T Buffalo external hard drive so the computer stays like brand new for a long time..Right now I have about 5G worth of music on my hard drive and I thought it was only on the hard drive and I just recently found out that it is also within the music folder on the computer itself. Any thoughts? Sorry if it is an odd question, I can try to rephrase the question if need be. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
2011 ilounge article: Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information (similar to the links above), particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick answer above. Unfortunately under the single term "transferring library" it describes two very different moves; relocating just your media (not  really transferring your library and not recommended unless you really need this configuration), and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.

  • I have just purchased my 1st mac and want to start my iTunes fresh.  I have all my music on an external hard drive and want iTunes stored on it.  How do i do this

I have just purchased my 1st Mac Mini,
I haven't imported any music yet except from purchased music.
I have 100gb of music on an external hard drive (already formatted to Mac OS Journaled.
I want my iTunes to be store on the External Hard drive, and to update my External Hard drive with new music I add to iTunes.
I also want to know the best way of adding my music on the Ext Hard drive  e.g.:  "add folder to library" or "import"
I plan on buying a Macbook Pro soon, and want to be able to use the same iTunes library.

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

  • I saved my itunes account to an external hard drive and can no longer access it

i have saved my itunes account to an external hard drive, then deleted my account on my laptop to make space on my hard drive and can no longer get acces to my itunes account.

If you move/copy your data back to internal drive, you should be able to add it to library, by clicking file add to library at the top of itunes.

  • Can I export my itunes movies onto an external hard-drive and then remove them from my computer, but still watch them when I plug in my external hard-drive?

I am running out of space on my macbook. What is taking up the most room is my movies. Can I put them on an external hard-drive and then watch them later after I remove them from my library?

On Windows, hold Shift (not alt), launch iTunes and select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external drive.

I have been transfering photos and movies to an external hard drive and when I try and secure trash contents off my computor i get the message it will not continue In utilities  the message is: SUID file syst/library/coreS has been modified and will not be repaired. Hence I cannot free up space on my computor. What can i do?

Do not worry. It is probably a permission you should ignore, but you should check that the permission appears in this site > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • I get an error message when I try to empty the trash in order to clear up an external hard drive.  I had been using it for time machine, have shifted that to a larger external hard drive, and want to free up the space for photographs.  Any suggestions?

What should I do when I get an error message (error code - 8003) when I'm trying to empty the trash to clear up additional space on an external hard drive?

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • Can I transfer our family itunes libraries to external hard-drive and connect to Time Capsule to share accross network

I was wondering if I could transfer our family itunes account libraries which are on 2 laptops and 1 Macbook, each with their own Apple ID's linked to iTunes per machine to an external hard-drive. This hard-drive would then be connected Time Capsule to share accross the network. Is this scenario possible? Please advise. Thank you.

There's your problem.  Macs can only read NTFS and not write to it.   there are various cross-platform solutions but none are ideal.  If this is a Mac-only drive the best thing is to reformat it to Mac Extended with Disk Utility.  Note in doing so you will erase the drive!

  • Itunes music stored on external hard drive -- and itunes library empty

Hi, I recently upgraded to a new external HD (Seagate Go for Mac) and I moved my 111 GB of music media (which was stored on my old ext. HD) onto the Seagate. Only problem then was that when I tried to play a song in the iTunes library, it couldn't locate the file.
So -- after trying various combos of things, I ended-up doing a new install of iTunes. Which of course shows up empty (the iTunes library). And all my music media is still on the Seagate.
So -- is there a way to have my iTunes library recognize what is in the Seagate? So I don't have to burn that 111GB of music again?
    Thank you

update to the question above -- I went into Time Machine and restored my iTunes library, so it is showing what music I have again in there. FYI in advanced settings, I kept the setting that the music is stored in the Seagate HD.
BUT when I click on any music, it still cannot locate the file (all the music media files are still stored on the Seagate ext. HD)
So -- how can I get the iTunes library to re-connect with what is in the Seagate HD?
    Thank you!

  • I have all my songs on an external hard drive and I've added them to the library but I can't edit any information? Only on songs located on the hard drive.

All the information about a song can't be changed when the song is located on my external hard drive

Try changeing your Read/Write permssions for those songs. Just find the song file, Right click, go to Properties then Uncheck Read-Only
