If I pay the carrier such as Rogers or Telus to unlock my iPhone 4S will it be permanent?

I have recently purchased a used iPhone 4S with 5 months remaining on the 1 year warranty (not eligible for Apple Care). Buying used while everyone is upgrading to the new 5 allows me to buy into this market - already have a Mac Book - sadly, can't afford all the luxes brand new.
The phone is with Rogers but I would like to stick with Bell and if I pay Rogers the fee to unlock my iPhone (no longer under contract) will it be permanent? Do they inform Apple that my iPhone should be added to the Apple Registry.
I am asking this because while I was in Jump-Plus one of the staff said that if I accept the new ios 6 Update before I have my phone unlocked then I might have to go back and pay again to have it unlocked. Also, that the Carrier may not be able to unlock the 4S with th ios6 update. What is if any of this info is correct?
With my work I do a fair bit of travelling including overseas and I would like to have the phone unlocked for this purpose as well as to keep my old number with Bell. Not interested in contracts. I know that I could use a third party app to unlock my phone but I would want to wait until the warranty has run out in Feb 2013. Through some of my reading, it appears that I might have to do the unlock procedure everytime there is a new major software updateWhat are some pros and cons to these kind of apps?
Any feedback, suggestions, out their in th apple community would be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you for your time.

Thank-you for clarifying third party and for pointing out the potential problems.
i will either have my phone unlocked by the carrier or get my phone service from them. switching carriers is not essential.
Thanks agin.
Cheers!

You need the Apple ID and password from the previous owner who set the Activation Lock.  Where did you get this phone?

  • How can I change the settings so when I delete an email from my iPhone it will also delete from my iPad.....very sick of deleting the same emails two times

How can I change the settings wit mail so that when I delete my Verizon email from my iPhone it will also delete from my iPad too.... Seems like I shouldn't have to delete my email in three places...iPhone ..iPad ...and desktop

Don't know which email host you are using, but if this is a POP account, you can't do it. If IMAP, then deleting one email should delete it on all other devices.

  • HT1473 I am online but it won't name my tracks as it says in step 2 If your computer is connected to the Internet, iTunes will automatically look up information for the CD such as song name, album and artist. This feature will work with most commercially

I Am adding CDs to put onto my iPod. It used to automatically name the tracks and now it doesn't. I am connected to the Internet and it comes up with this text. "User not registered for online use"
does  anybody know what I need to do?
    thanks

Believe it or not, that article helped me find a temporary solution. After reading it I realized that the problem did have to do with my DNS settings. I had taken the DNS settings that my ISP gives me when I dial up and plugged them into the configuration for my AirPort card. This apparently caused a problem because, although my wireless network is always on, it's not always connected to the internet. So those DNS settings were invalid most of the time.
I found that as long as I leave the area for DNS servers blank, the computer logs in normally. This further confirms my suspicion that something was trying to access the internet at login. I guess as long as I don't specify any DNS servers, the computer realizes it doesn't have an internet connection through my AirPort card.
So I just created two network locations: one for when my network is connected to the internet and one for when it isn't. In the first, I kept my original DNS settings because they work as long as I have an internet connection. In the second I did not specify any DNS servers. This seems to work fine, but I'd still like to know what is trying to access the internet at login. I've disabled the automatic update feature in all my programs that have it, but that doesn't seem to help the slowdown at login. Does anyone know how I could figure out what program is trying to access the internet?

Look, any officially unlocked GSM iPhone will work in India. You purchase from Dubai, no FaceTime, and Dubai is part of the UAE. You purchase anywhere but India, and you will have NO warranty or support. Frankly, doesn't make any sense to me why you want to do this...and don't bother telling me you save hundreds of dollars...still doesn't make any sense. Do a forum search here. We get posts daily, from users in India, who didn't purchase their iPhones in India...guess what? They all have problems. You want to join that bunch? It's your money, have at it.

  • HT1349 Hi, My friend purchased iphone 4S from US and now its a locked version. Is it possible to unlock the phone, if yes iam ready to pay the price. Thanks

It is not possible to unlock a US iPhone.  NO carriers in the US allow unlocking.  Sell the phone and purchase one in your country.

  • ITunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone

When I try to download and install the new carrier settings file, I get the message "iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation." (I got a similar message when I tried to download and install the OS update.)
I've been able to work around the problem by creating a different user and installing from there. But I'd like to be able to find and correct the cause of the error message instead of using a workaround. It seems like there's a file or folder somewhere that has somehow become read-only. Does anyone know where iTunes downloads the carrier settings and OS update files?

You will find them in separate folders within your user account Library/iTunes folder.
That was it. Somehow the owner of ~/Library/iTunes got changed to root.

Have you tried using Disk Utility to Repair Permissions?
Right after I posted the message I thought that the age-old placebo of repairing permissions might actually fix my problem. Because of your quick reply I found the ownership problem before repairing permissions. So here was the perfect chance for a test. Repair Permissions ran successfully but the owner of ~/Library/iTunes was still root. Repair Permissions fails the test.
I manually changed the owner to steve and was able to download and install the carrier settings.
    Thanks!

  • Is it possible to get a new iPhone instead of an old iPhone 5 with paying the difference?

I have an iPhone 5 that recently has a problem with the battery, but today it stopped working.
I am living in Lubbock, TX, and there is no Apple store near by.
I would like to now about the possibilities of fixing the phone or replacing it with paying the difference, and I would like to know if it is possible to send the phone to the store by mail instead of coming by myself.
    Best regards,

See if your phone qualifies for a battery replacement here: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/
If so, follow the contact links and see what your options are for getting it repaired.
You will get your existing phone repaired (on occasion it would be replaced, but with the exact same model).
If you want a different iPhone, you will have to sell your current one and purchase a new one.

  • HT201270 Why after the carrier update my phone losses signal?

Does any one have an answer into why after the carrier update i have to turn off the LTE service to get a signal. Even after i do that i have to restart my phone.
I even went as far as restoring my phone back to factory and works fine then i get the update for the carrier then i have no signal. My last iphone 4 work perfect never a issue.

Well AT&T issued the update, so it would seem logical to me to contact them.

  • Is it legal to unblock or unlock an iphone in the U.S.?

Is it legal to unblock or unlock an i-phone? In the US only. If someone finds my phone and I reported lost, is there anything done to the person who finds it and unblocks it? What is the real difference between unlocking and unblocking?

I don't believe there is any way to physically block a lost phone in the US. AT&T won't block it so if a lost or stolen iPhone is activated the not much if anything needs to be done by the person who 'found' the phone.
As far as unlocking an iPhone goes, only the carrier can do that (for an official unlock) and AT&T doesn't unlock iPhones. It is not illegal to hack an iPhone (not supported by apple though) and by hacking the iPhone it may be possible to unlock it with third party software which is not illegal. Apple would probably like it to be illegal though....

  • HT201210 my iphone 4s .. my ask what is the msg mean : there is no sim card . and my iphone is lock . plz how ican unlock ?

my iphone 4s .. my ask what is the msg mean : there is no sim card . and my iphone is lock . plz how ican unlock ?

If there is no SIM card, insert one from the carrier to whom the device is locked.
As for unlocking the device, only the carrier to whom it is locked can unlock it.

  • HT1414 i wanna unlock my iPhone every time i try it says only compatible Sim cards from supported carrier may be used

i wanna unlock my iPhone every time i try it says only compatible Sim cards from supported carrier may be used

Only the carrier it is locked to can authorize unlocking it. Yours is obviously locked to a carrier other than the one you are trying to use.
Contact the carrier it's locked to and find out if they offer unlocking and if you qualify to have it unlocked.

  • I have a company BB which is terrible and want to buy a 3GS and use my BB SIM card in the iPhone. Will this work?

I have a company BB which is terrible and want to buy a 3GS and use my BB SIM card in the iPhone. Will this work?

Depending on the model of the Blackberry & the carrier.
if the blackberry didn't have 3G or a 3g sim card (depending on the carrier), then the SIM is probably too old to use and would require a new SIM.
The data plans on some carriers specify a blackberry data plan and an iPhone data plan, and they are not interchangable, so the carrier would have to switch that.
Usually since iphones come with a SIM preinstalled, some carriers may tell you the SIM card can't be transferred between an iphone and another device.
