If I purchase a mac mini now - will Mountain Lion be avilable free?

If I purchase a mac mini now - Will Mountain Lion be available free - or should I wait to purchase the mac mini?

No. It will come with Lion installed. A free upgrade to Mountain Lion would only occur when Apple announces such an option, and only to those who purchase the computer within some period of time after ML is released.
If saving $30 or so to upgrade to ML is your goal, then wait until it is released and Apple initiates an Up-To-Date program.

If I upgrade to Lion now will mountain lion be a free update?

I really hope that Apple will do the right/ethical thing and give recent (within the 8-9 months) purchasers of macbook, macbook pros, macbook air, and people who just bought single OS copies of Lion OS-either a free copy of Mountain Lion or a huge discount price on the OS ($5.00 max ). Let's be honest here....Mountain Lion is the patched up Lion. Apple couldn't release an update large enough to fix the problems with Lion so they instead created a new OS. They know that is the truth.
As someone who  just bought a macbook pro that came pre-installed with Lion (had no choice really but to accept that or completly wipe it clean and try to put on Snow Leopard, but I was hesitant to because of being warned not to try that on the pre-installed macbook pros.) I don't feel it is right that I would have to pay for another OS when I was already supposed to have a functional OS included with my recent major purchase. Let's think about it for second: when I got a powerbook g4 around 2004/05 I paid about the same price as this macbook pro i now own. With that I got the lap top, the installer OS cds (a functional OS I  might add), manual, stickers, a vga adapter, s-output cord, ac adapter, ac extension cable, and phone cord. With the 2011 macbook pro I got the laptop, manual, stickers, ac adapter, ac extension cable, and cloth to wipe off my screen. I didn't get any s-video output or vga adapter, and I'm actually glad that they didn't give me any lion installer cds because that would have been a waste of optical disc. What came free in a box over 6 years ago (vga adapter display port) is now $30 extra at the apple store. Also, no s-video. So I can't hook it up to an external monitor or tv. (and no, I can't just go and buy a fake one on amazon because I have analog so i would on top of that buy a pc converter box. ) I honestly wouldn't mind buying the converter box... had I gotten a free vga display adapter with my laptop. Also let's compare a minor difference in applecare: back then I got a receipt and a box with some info and a applecare test cd that was good for diagnostic utility testing. while maybe a bit old fashioned, I still like having cds that I can use for testing problems. This time, I didn't get any info box or cds, or a receipt for that matter--well i did get an email saying I had extendedapple 3 year but I never had the chance to make a phone confirmation that proves I am in service. I feel that is a bit risky sending people home without a hard copy of your purchase. They could just claim you didn't buy it. maybe i'm just old fashioned that way. To be clear, i can't compare the actual service of applecare of present day and former because so far I haven't had enough use of it to compare it yet.
What I'm getting at is that with the money they saved on gypping me with included accessories and a function OS, surely they could afford to right the situation by giving me a free copy of the new OS Mountain Lion. I might add, that way back when I had my powerbook g4 I went into to apple's genius bar one day and was trying to get an issue fixed regarding the itunes razor phone I had just purchased (way back before iphone had just come out) the music wasn't transferring from my computer to my phone. The guy was very very nice and he said he couldn't fix the problem with the phone (the usb turned out to be damaged) and he upgraded my panther to tiger for free!
That is an example of good customer service. That is example of keeping loyal apple customers.
---also--I found something posted on another forum that I felt I just had to share that further demonstrates  examples of extrodinary past customer service from Apple:

I had the logic board in my iBook 800/12.1" (Nov. '02) replaced 3 times. After the 4th failure occured a couple of weeks ago, I called Apple Support and requested a replacement machine. They refused, and were fairly rude about it.
So, in a moment of desperation, I sent an email to Steve Jobs. I did not demand a replacement machine. I simply said that I was extremely displeased with the quality of my iBook and I would no longer be purchasing or advocating Apple products. I wished Mr. Jobs the best of luck in Apple's future endeavors.
Two days later, I received a call from Apple's Corporate Executive Relations team. The woman I spoke with apologized profusely for my troubles with the iBook. She explained the logic board replacement program to me in great detail, and then, without any prompting from me, asked if a new iBook G4 (as a replacement) would cause me to reconsider leaving the platform. **** yes. So, I'm typing this post on a brand new 1Ghz, 12.1" iBook G4
Needless to say, despite the trouble with the machine, and the heartburn of dealing with Apple Support - in the end I'm left feeling fairly impressed with Apple. In the end, they did the right thing, and kept a customer.

  • If i purchase Lion now, will mountain lion be a free upgrade?

I heard if you buy a new computer with Lion, it will be a free upgrade to Mountain Lion when it is released. Does this apply the same if I download Lion now or will I have to purchase the Mountain Lion upgrade?
    Does anyone know?
    Please let me know.
    Many Thanks

No, the download does not qualify. Lion must be part of a computer purchase on or after June 11.

  • Sharing iTunes with a Mac Mini OS X Mountain Lion Server

I'm adding a Mac Mini OS X Mountain Lion Server to my home network. What options do I have to inetgrate iTunes into the server? Currently my master iTunes library is housed on a RAID on a Mac Pro, home sharing is on, and it interfaces over the network just fine into Apple TV (3rd gen). For instance, with Server can all devices on the network have access to that library?  Could the library stream to the Apple TV in the living room, an iMac in the office, an iPhone in another room all simultaenously? Also, can any Server member order iTunes Store content and cause it it to be placed into the master library on the Ser

  • Trouble receiving FaceTime calls on my Mac Mini using OSX Mountain Lion

I have a Mac Mini using OSX Mountain Lion, an iPad 2, and an iPhone 4.  I tried to receive  a FaceTime call on my Mac but it was telling the caller that it was busy.  I was however able to call her iPhone from FaceTime on my Mac and we connected that way.  After our video conversation I tried testing this by calling my Mac from my iPhone.  I also received the message that it was busy.  I should also add that when I first received the call I had my iPad FaceTime turned on.  The iPad was ringing but not the Mac.  So I turned off FaceTime on my iPad and had her call me back again using my email address.  As noted it said it was busy.  Please help!

  • Mac Mini/Xcode/OS Mountain Lion issue

    Hi everyone,
I'm a complete newbie to macs and I'm having a tough time figuring a couple of things out. I basically bought a mac mini so I can use Xcode. I went to try and download it but when it finishes and I open the Xcode file I get a message that says "Xcode Not Supported On This Archtecture". I hit software upgrade but it stays stuck on version 10.5.8. Then I see that you can pay $20 bucks for the newest Mountain Lion update.
Do I need to get Mountain Lion in order for Xcode to work on my Mac Mini?
For further info, I signed up as a developer and I have the 3 gig version of the Mac Mini. I've heard kind of confusing things regarding Xcode with people saying it's free but others saying you have to pay an annual fee. At the moment I haven't paid for anything relating to Xcode.
Basically my main question is, how do I get Xcode up and running?
Sorry if this is all super rookie bush league but I'm brand new to the mac world.
    Thanks for all your help.

Xcode is free. A basic login to the developer site is free. For $99 you get full membership in the developer program and the ability to release software either in the App Store (depending on either iOS or Mac program). If you are in the Mac developer program you can release software with a Developer ID. You also get access to different versions of the operating system for testing.
The problem is that your Mac Mini is from 2007 at best. It will not run Mountain Lion. You can call Apple (yes - telephone only - no online sales) and purchase either Snow Leopard or Lion. In the developer site you can download an older version of Xcode appropriate for whatever operating system you want to run. That will be enough to learn on. If you ever want to move publishing your apps, you will need a new system.

  • Mac mini wont run mountain Lion

I have just purchased a 2nd hand 2009 mini mac, and have updated the snow leopard osx.
I checked the spec to be able to run mountain Lion and my machine just meets it...core 2 duo 1.83ghz,upgraded to 2gb ram.
I have purchased Mountain Lion for £14 from apple, and got a download link. Right at the start of the download stage, a warning pops up that my machine isn't able to run it.
I have adequate hard drive space, and realise I am close to edge of compatability,  is it because "apple" is recognising my machine as originally having less than 2gb, thus says it is unable to run it?
other questions are, as I ordered the download, but then it failed will I still be charged?
also, if available could I purchase a physical disk and install either on top of my existing OS or even on a new HD.....
I am a new convert having previously done many many windows upgrades etc, so I am learning a bit...Any help would be great, my reason for wanting to upgrade is I wan't to down load Mac Apps, which you have to have mt Lion to do?
    many thanks

Yes, thxs for that, my current os is defo 10.6.8, i've run an update, and it says the software is up to date....
My current o/s is I guess snow leopard, and i wan't to get to at least Lion or mountain Lion...
I realise Mavericks is a free upgrade, but i really dont think my machine would run that, but my first issue is getting Mt Lion installed, i understand you can't buy Lion on its own so i purchased Mt Lion...
but like i said, i am unsure if my machine meets the required spec for even that as the ram is just upgraded to 2 gb...
is there a way around the install checking what spec the machine is that it is being installed on to?, although i am unsure if i am even near to that stage as it won't even start the down load...
    i will try again!!!
thanks again, has anyone else got any advice...
sorry one last thing, will it be anything linked to my serial number?, it isn't listed under "about my mac", i suspect as it may well have been effected when the ram was expanded to 2gb, would that cause an issue, I have the serial number on the original box, can i re establish that with the mac if that is the cause?

    Can someone help me
    Thanks in advance.

You don't need an expensive USB keyboard, a £10 Logitech UK - Keyboard K120 will work just fine for booting into the Recovery Partition to Repair or Reinstall OS X.

  • I just purchased a new iMac. Will mountain lion be offered as a free update?

I purchased a new iMac on Monday. Will the new OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) be offered as a free update for people who just purchased a new Mac?

Almost certainly not, since Moutain Lion won't make an appearance until this summer (at least 4 months off) and Apple historically has offered free OS updates to purchasers of new Macs within 1 month of a new major OS release.
Don't worry about it, though. The upgrade to Mountain Lion through the Mac App Store will most likely be a simply $30, which is very small for a full OS version bump.

  • Mac Mini crash after Mountain Lion install!

I just tried to update my wife's MacMini to Mountain Lion and when it went through the first restart, it never came back up. I checked to see if it was the monitor after searching here for a while, I am using a Samsung TV coming off the HDMI port. I plugged in a regular monitor to the mini display port and still nothing. I tried to do a hard restart after letting it sit for about 10 min and now it sounds like the hard drive is barely spinning up. Anybody have any ideas?

Oh. You are so in jail.
Plug the mini straight into the wall power supply.
You do have 4 - 8GB memory installed, right?
Disconnect everything but power and the display port to regular monitor connection. Make sure that external monitor is switched to the type of connection: DVI, HDMI, VGA. Wrong setting and your mini could be booted up sneering at you from behind a dark screen.
    Boot mini.
    Any change?

  • MAC MINI SERVER WITH Mountian lion....

I purchased a mac mini "server" after Mountian lion came out I did the upgrade in OS only to find out my "Server" function will not work on Mountian Lion.... what's up apple....I've been a fan for 6 computers and didn't expect this.

Restore your previous installation or purchase Server 2.0.
The "server" part of te system has been broken out into
a seperate add-on application instead of being tightly integrated
as a seperate version of OSX.
