My nano was dowlnloading fine it was in iTunes then it went away how do i get it to come back so I can finish downloading

I have an old IPID touch and just bought a anew Nano. If I downoload the latest version of Itunes for my Nano, will I lose all of my osns stored in my old version of Itunes and can I still use my Touch (with my current songs on it) with the new version of Itunes? In the past when I downloaded a new version, I lost my songs on my Touch. Thank you for any help any one might offer.

This will not erase the music on your iPod, but the next time you connect iTunes will act like it's the first time that you have connected the iPod and you'll have to do all of your sync preferences again. Is this part of troubleshooting? -

A reset of the device (holding the home and power buttons until the white Apple logo appears) does NOT affect any data on the device. -

A reset will not affect data. A restore however, can. Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer. This is where they are saved. The backup process for the iPhone does not really save all contact data.

My Ipod touch (2nd Gen) is not being recognised in itunes. I have gone through the ipod touch assistant, and this has made no difference.
Next try is to uninstall itunes and re-install it. However...will I lose my music library when I do this?
I am also having problems with my external back-up drive which has now stopped me opening it up (I have had it for a year), as it says "I don't have permission to see it's contents" and "files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read-only" - so I am loathe to uninstall itunes if I lose all my music etc....

No, keep your library and you'll be fine. Just go to Control Panel > Uninstall a program
Uninstall everything with Apple, then reinstall the latest version. When you open it, you should see your original music files from your library. -

You will not "lose" your music, since:
1) it is already stored in your computer
or
2) you have it available from the itunes store, if you bought the tracks there.
These two methods are the only options to get music into the phone, so you can't lose a single track.
However, if you chose to enable iTunes match in your device, it will erase the music that is already stored in your phone, and you will have to load it from the cloud. I assume this is the answer that you are looking for. Hope this helps. -

Under normal circumstances, an uninstall/reinstall doesn't touch your content. (That being said, it's still always a good idea to maintain a current backup at all times in case of disasters.)
