If I rest my chin on the desk, the display looks great, but...

that's not a very comfortable way to work. I just bought this mbp 13" day before yesterday. It's the glossy display.
It's way too bright. burns right thru text. My ical is almost unreadable. So I tried adjusting the brightness and contrast. Doesn't work. If I open it up to the max, tho, and get my eyes level with the keyboard it looks great. Are they ALL like this? Is there anything I can do?

Some manufacturers seem to think brighter screens mean better screens, which to some extent is correct, however, the brightness I experienced with my original MBP C2D 15" was painful, it also helped show of the grainy/ shimmery effect quite beyond belief, inducing eye strain within minutes and migraine within 20 minutes use.
The 17" MBP I have now still has a bright screen, but nowhere near as bright as the 15". Bright enough, not grainy / shimmery.
Just goes to show occassionally, even Apple can get something right

My photos looked great but when I made a book in iphoto 09 they all appeared to be corrupted in the pdf preview? There is a white triangular shape with random horizontal lines running through each photo in the ibook preview. Took it to the Genius bar, after a week of fooling with it including wiping it clean and resinstalling the OS the same thing happens.

A LOT of them dont appear.
What do you see in the window when you click on those? A blank, black window? An exclamation mark? What?

What are the best instagram video settings using Compressor 4? The outputs I have created look clean HD in camera roll. When I view video in instagram preview it looks great, but then when i post it the quality gets blurry. Any advice?

I have read that you should resize the frame to 640 by 640 or 1000 x 1000, and have tried both. I shot the footage on canon 70d using 720p60fps, and edited the footage with iMovie. Its been frustrating to see the finished product look great on iPhone, iPad, or mac but once i post the video- the quality gets blurry when you focus on the faces that are in focus. My footage is basketball action shots from a high school game. Any advice would be huge, I been looking for an answer to this for a month.

Simple export a ProRes 422 file, upload that by itself. Facebook, Vimeo, YoutTube, etc, all compress the video themselves. So don't compress it first, just upload it and let them do their own compression.

Got the right cables, sound is great, but TV only shows blue Apple screen

Just got a new Samsung hi-def TV, and went to the Apple store to get HDMI/DVI cabling. All is connected, and sound comes through great - but the picture on the screen is the blue desktop. If I shut the Mac, I get a TV signal telling me to check the cable and/or signal. However, I think the cables are OK because the sound is fine and obviously it sees a visual signal from the Mac or the TV display wouldn't be the blue desktop.
Any ideas? Is there some trick to tell the Mac to display on my TV? Many thanks ~

To fill the screen, I believe you have to go into System Preferences and select Displays. With your MB hooked up to your TV, you should see an option as to screen resolution. Select the biggest one and your screen should fill up IF your selection is in Wide Screen Format. At least thats the way my was the one time I viewed a movie from my MB. Beautiful picture by the way!
FWIW, I don't see much advantage in playing movies from a MB unless you have no other method (like a DVD player, Apple TV, etc.) That's the reason I only did this once just to see it work.

Third party apps cannot do much to change the lock screen. Music apps are about the only exception I know of. Some clock apps have a setting to disable auto lock while they are running. I generally use that type of setting when I'm using my iPhone as an alarm clock. As you'd be likely to have your phone plugged in overnight anyway, this shouldn't be a problem.

Preview Browser looks great, but it's a mess on the web

I'm a novice dreamweaver girl, and just uploaded my site. I
did it with a template I designed, and when I preview it in
dreamweaver using firefox or internet explorer, it looks how I
hoped it would. But when I type in the url, the site is not at all
what it looks like in the preview. For example, in the preview, I
have a widget menu that's small and on the left side, but on the
web, the menu goes horizontally across the whole screen. Also, in
the preview, there are photos going down the right side of the
page, but on the web, the photos and the text come one after
another, with large amounts of space.
My basic questions are:
1. What am I doing wrong?
2. Why does the preview look okay and different from the web?
3. Does this have something to do with the template I used?

How do I make the tool bar displays look like Firefox 3.6?

I have gotten used to the order of the tool bars and would like to make them look like the previous version of Firefox (3.6). Is there a way to move them up or down in FF 4.0?

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Does Safari support a interactive PDF with hidden layers? I'm on version 5.0.3 and the interactive PDF displays just fine, but our web development team tells me all the layers display when they view the same PDF on Safari.

When I view the PDF in Safari 5.0.3 on my Mac OS 10.5.8 the PDF displays fine and the interactivity works. However our web design firm tell me the PDF displays all the hidden layers when they view it in Safari. Who's right?

Try updating your Safari to the latest version, 5.0.5.
Also check whether the rest of your system is up to date by going to Software Update in the Apple menu.

VirtualBench looks greate but it would be nice if the scope were 12 bit instead.

The virtual bench hardware concept is awesome. The price is right and the mix of hardware is perfect ( a small switch matrix would be a cool addition) but my only real complaint is the scope - it would be nice if it were 10-12 bit instead. I would definitely pay an additional $500-1000 for the additional resolution. The rest of the specs are great.

Why would the browser preview display look different than what I am seeing in the design view? Pls help!

When working with accordion panels, when I first insert the widget it looks fine, then I begin customizing the content and then the Preview display does not look the same as the Design display. For instance, in the design display the panel aligns with the adjacent image, but in Preview, it appears offset by one or two pixels.

I can connect to the internet and display my iTunes but I am unable to connect to the iTunes store.I am using the latest version of iTunes and have tried reinstalling but the problem still exists.

Why in the Viewer my video looks perfect but when in Canvas its bad?

I record videos on my computer (I use a screen capture program called Screen Flick) I put my video into FCE 4 and in the Viewer it looks perfect! then ill put it in the timeline render and everything and ill play the clip and in the canvas its all blurry and not as sharp and just looks plain bad! I really dont think its the way I export it from ScreenFlick because it plays and looks perfect before i put it into FCE and watch it in the canvas. Please if anyone knows how to fix this tell me!

The main problem here is going to be your frame rate, as FCE only supports frame rates of 25 or 29.97fps. You could try to convert the files using the free [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com> to *Apple Intermediate Codec* at 29.97fps, and then using that in a 1280x720 sequence within FCE. However, you might find that the only way to get the quality you want would be to edit with a program that supports custom frame rates.

if you're not in a big rush - why not hold off until Adobe and Microsoft releases an update to support the Retina Screen.
Don't get me wrong - the Macbook Retina is a good and videos look great - but when it comes to Photoshop, it's a little blurry and the fonts in Excel and Word is pretty blurry too.....I own one....
In any event, if it's something you can live with - then by all means - go for it.....
Otherwise - get the non Retina Macbook Pro - it's cheaper, and it's user upgradeable in both RAM and Hard Drive.
