If I restore & set up as new phone, can I save contact data?
I've been searching for a while but still can't find the information I'm looking for...
I have an iPhone3G on an O2-UK contract. When I first upgraded to iOS4, the MMS camera icon disappeared from the left of the message box, and I was unable to send or receive any picture messages.
Then, 2 weeks later, when I reset the network settings the Mobile (Cellular) Data Network option (under Settings > General> Network) completely disappeared leaving me utterly baffled. I wasn't too concerned about it before but now I need to send some photos and it's extremely annoying.
I've been to the local Apple Store and the O2 Store twice and neither of them were ultimately able to do anything about it. They changed the Mobile Data Network settings multiple times and instructed me to restore the phone also.
On my latest restore I completely erased all data from the phone and restored from a backup, but the problem was still there... I know it can't be a hardware problem because BETWEEN erasing the phone and restoring it from the backup the MMS icon and network options all reappeared.
My question is this: If, instead of restoring from the backup, I was to bite the bullet and set it up as a new phone, would I be able to keep all my contacts and other data? Is there a way to transfer my contacts temporarily to the SIM while I carry out the operation?
It's extremely annoying that such a simple operation is so difficult to find... Why are contacts, notes and calender events not available to view and edit in iTunes? I can't see any reason why Apple shouldn't include this obvious feature.
Thanks for the advice wjosten. I haven't actually done the set-up-as-new-phone thing yet so it's not too late for me to do what you've suggested. There are still some problems though...
1. It says everywhere that contacts and calendar events are supposed to be synched with Outlook, however apparently Windows 7 Starter (for netbooks) does not come with Outlook at all. Can I get it for free somewhere or download some other program?
2. I've tried synching the ccalendar events with gmail, but it doens't work at all.
3. The only luck I've had in this regard is that I've managed to save about half of my notes to gmail, but another stupid little annoying thing which is bothering me is how to save all those un-backed-up notes in the "On My iPhone" account into the backed-up gmail account without moving each individual note one-by-one.

I have restored my new iphone 5 but everytime i plug it back into iTunes i am asked if i want to set up a new phone or restore it. I have already set it up and tried to restore it again thinking this might help but i still keep getting the same message. The phone is recognised and shows up in devices but i cannpt sync apps or anything to it.
Have you updated your iTunes on your computer? WIth a device running iOS7, you need iTunes 11.
When you removed iTUnes, did you see something named 'apple mobile device support' or something like it? (The exact name varies from operating system to operating system). If you see that, uninstall it too. That's the drivers for your iPhone and they should self-install when you plug your device in.
If all that is fine, have you checked your cable and USB port? a malfunctioning cable can keep you from syncing. -
I have restored my new phone from I cloud but when I connect to my PC to put some music on it asks for set up as new phone or back up from a date from iTunes that is too old. Help it's doing my head in
Select setup as "New", the next screen should prompt you to rename your phone. Just name it what you already have it named. After that, you should be able to sync and all of your data & settings will still be exactly as you've already set them up on your phone. The message is more threatening than what really happens.

Hi, I have recently upgraded from and Iphone 4 to 5. I completed a back up on my iphone 4 via icloud which went ok. When setting up my new phone I selected to set up as a new phone and not via icloud back up. Is there anyway I can restore my details to my new phone? Thanks Hayley
Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and install any updates available.
Navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all contents and settings on the device you want to restore.
When this completes and the Set-Up Assistant starts, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from. -
When setting up my new phone, the setup assistant didn't appear. Where can I find the "restore from icloud back up" option so I can transfer all my information?
You have to erase the phone an go back through the setup again. Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings. Then go back through the setup screens again and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup (see image below). Be sure you are connected to wifi and your charger as this will take some time to finish.

how do i restore my iCloud settings after my daughter has accidentally deleted them while setting up a new phone to the account?
Hello Emily,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you need to sign out of your previous Apple ID on your device, but do not know the password, then you will need to reset the password on that account. Since you do not have access to the email with that Apple ID, you will either have to reset the password using the security questions or contact Apple ID account security.
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security - Apple Support

I'm upgrading to the 5, do i set up a new phone or Restore from backup?
That depends if you want your current data on your new phone, then restore from backup. IF you don't then set up as new.

When I turned on iCloud backup now when I synch to iTunes it asks if I want to set up as new phone or restore from backup. Why? I have been synching this iPhone to this computer fine since I got my iPhone 4S.
1. set up as new
2. transfer you wife's purchases.
3. Just in case create one computer back up manually.
Enjoy. -
my phone is in recovery mode. i have unsuccessfully tried to restore it with itunes. I did not back-up much of my info with icloud so that option isnt helpful.
I'm contemplating restoring it as a new phone. The question is: once its restored as a new phone can i then sync it with the backed-up info, apps, pics on my itunes or will it not allow that?Restoring from backup and syncing with iTunes are two different things.
If you restore as new you can sync back your apps/music/contacts http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
If your restore from backup, you get everything back http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766 -
HT1766 will "setting up as new phone" erase all information already on that phone?
Will "setting up as new phone" erase all information already on that phone?
Restoring is the process that sets it back to factory settings. Setting up as a new phone means that it will not use any potential backups and will be a clean slate with no data just as the day you first purchased it.

I want to know how I can get all my stuff from my iPhone 3 to my new iPhone five after I have already set up from new phone?
You can restore a backup of the old device to a new one. This will erase everything on the new one before restoring, so this may be an issue if you already have data on the new device.
To do a backup of the old device, iTunes is the safest route, in my opinion. Many users have lost photos when performing a restore from an icloud backup.
An icloud backup does not include everything. For example, only photos in camera roll are backed up. Also, music is not backed up since you get it back from itunes and (for purchased music) from the itunes store.
To restore:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings. This will erase your phone. Then you will go through the setup screens again as you did when your phone is new, and when given the option, select Restore from iCloud Backup. -
Apple recently replaced my broken iPhone 5 with a new one. I backed up the contents of my phone with iCloud.
When setting up my new phone I used an iCloud back up from an earlier date. Now I am missing some of my most recent stuff. How
Do I go back to use the proper iCloud back up to set up my new phone?Tap settings> general> reset> erase all content and settings...then you'll have a chance to setuo your phone again

I would like to know if "Restore Backup" to my new phone will load up all the information I have which backed up from my other phone. I only "clicked" on "Backup" when I connected the new phone to my computer. I was afraid to click on "Restore Backup" to have all the other information I had from my other iPhone load up to my new iPhone. Hope you can help. What is the difference between "Backup" and "Restore Backup"; is all that different from synching.Thanks. Ana
That's up to you. Do you want the data on your old phone on your new phone? If so, you follow the directions here:

If you want to setup your new phone as a new device, then there is nothing you need to do. -
I have just purchased the iPhone 5s and my previous phone was backed up on iCloud. However when I restored this on my new phone my photos are still being restored after 4 days. Shows the amount there but no pictures? Is there anything I can do to get them back as my other phone has now been cleared. On my iCloud storage it still shows that my previous phone had all the info still?? I'm confused!
Many users have lost photos while preforming a restore from backup or upgrading the iOS. Recall, only photos in the camera roll are backed up to iCloud. There is a way to turn backups for camera roll on/off, perhaps these users had camera roll turned off.
See:
Settings>icloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage, tap the device's name and on the next screen, be sure Camera Roll is turned on.
IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream. If using Photo stream, but sure to move the received photos to a permanent album. If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device.
Or, you can find other apps in the app store that send camera roll photos to a service like Dropbox.
If you haven't been saving photos except relying on iCloud to store them in a backup, then that is risky, as many users have discovered. I'm afraid I have no advice in this case - there is no "cure".
