If I rotate a .mov 90 degrees in QuickTime, is it lossy?

If I rotate a .mov 90 degrees in QuickTime, is there lossy compression when I save it?

I think that when you rotate a .mov in Quicktime and then SAVE it, no re-encoding is done. Instead, the display settings are set, so that the movie gets rotated "on the fly" when it is played back. The good news is that you don't get lossy reencoding. The bad news is that you have to spend the machine cycles to rotate the image during playback.
If you EXPORT the rotated movie, then you will re-encode. So if you are producing sideways movies, do as little transcoding as you can until you're ready for your final export, then do the rotation and export the rotated movie using your distribution compression method. For example, I'm working on a project that I shot in DV-25 that needs to be rotated. I'm going to either turn my monitor over, or work lying down until I get the editing done, leaving me with a DV-25 encoded project. I'll rotate that in QuickTime and then export the rotated video to MPEG-4 or H.264 for distribution.
That was exactly the workflow I used for this test clip, encoded using the 3ivx MPEG-4 encoder:
http://capital2.capital.edu/admin-staff/dalthoff/rrc/dragmagnum.mov
You can "open URL" in QuickTime for more details. The encoding loss you see is first-generation MPEG-4 loss caused not by the rotation, but by the encoding to MPEG-4; that is, it would look pretty much exactly the same (although because of the way the encoder works, the encoder errors would be different) if I had not rotated it.

    Hi, Dannyboy
You can open the sequence in SimpleMovieX, rotate it 90 degrees (View > Resize Movie...), then save RefMovie. Give it a different name, like rotated.mov
Then drag rotated.mov into your iMovie project.

  • I paid for Quicktime Pro but only show Quicktime. I need to rotate a movie.

I have registered successfully with the license code they sent me after I paid for Quicktime Pro. The email from them says that I now have Quicktime Pro, but still I only show regular Quicktime, not Quicktime Pro.
I DO HAVE A NEW DELL LAPTOP SO THIS MAY BE OPERATOR ERROR.
I'd like to be able to rotate a movie but the directions I have don't work for regular Quicktime.
I found directions online that tell me to open Quicktime Pro. Go to "Window". Then to "Show Movie Properties" then to the icons for rotating a movie.
I can get as far as "Show Movie Properties" but after that there is a strange chart and nothing about rotating anything.
How do I get the Quicktime Pro to show up instead of regular Quicktime?
Thanks in advance for any help you may give to me.

Thank you for responding! Unfortunately, it doesn't give me this option. When I go to "Windows" and then to "Show Movie Properties" and I click on the video, nothing happened other than it is highlighted in blue. I tried clicking once. Nada. Twice Nada. I tried right clicking. Nothing comes up. The options I have are below. Is this making any sense to you? Thanks.

Shouldn't my program say Quicktime Pro?

  • Any way to rotate video 90 degrees?

I shot a few videos with my camera this weekend, and I had to hold the camera in portrait mode so as to properly capture the subjects. Now when I import the clips into iMovie, the video is sideways. Is there any way to just convert the entire clip 90 degrees so it looks correct? Either with iMovie 06 or 08? Thanks

Well I've found a way to rotate the video itself within Quicktime, then I just reimported the clips into iMovie '08, but the clips themselves in the clip viewer appear in the correct orientation, but when playing or scrubbing through them, they again play sideways, as if the movie was never rotated in the first place.
Any way to rotate the clips and make it stick in iMovie?

  • How to Rotate a Movie Clip

I was taking a clip of Old Faithful and due to the height I turned my camera sideways, figuring I could rotate the video once I got it into iMovie.
Well, I can't figurer out how and when I enter "rotate" into iMovie help, it comes up with nothing useful.
I'm running a current update of iMovie 6 HD.
Anyone got any idea or some shareware that can rotate a movie clip?

Search this forum for "movie, rotate, plugin." This topic comes up a lot and there are some free plugins to deal with it. One thread to read is
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2561075&#2561075
Although, I gather, the free plugins don't work quite as well as QT Pro.
I was very happily surprised that the software which came with my Canon can do this. Canon's ImageBrowser has a utility called MovieEdit Task that can do simple editing, including rotating clips 90 degrees.

  • Rotate a movie clip in iMovie HD

    Hi all,
I am a recent convert back from iMovie 08 and I need to rotate a movie clip and I do not see the feature in the transitions button. Could someone please help.
    Thanks

i don't use this software, but i can suggest you an easy way to rotate your clip...you can do it with quicktime time pro, a really great pro app that is quite cheap...
you can do it with freeware video apps too, i think mpegstreamclip could be able to do this...try to check it.

    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • HT3775 I am trying to open a .mov file in "Quicktime" and it keeps saying it doesn't support the file.

I have made a movie in "Final Cut Pro X" saved it as a .mov file and "QuickTime" won't open it. It keeps saying that it doesn't recognize the file. Ironically there is another .mov file right next to it on the flash drive that opens just fine. I do notice that the one it does open looks like a little black box with a 'play' arrow button in it when I run the curser over it, but the one it doesn't open has a 'Quicktime' 'Q' in it.
I try to eject the flash drive and it says "Final Cut Pro X" is still using it, then it shows me a window that shows 6% progress. I am thinking maybe the movie is still loading. I really don't know.

    Try VLC.

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
"The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
I am the owner of the volume
I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.

  • Can't open .mov files in quicktime anymore

I can't think of any system changes that I've made recently but a few days ago I was able to open .mov files with quicktime and now I can't. I get the following error when I try to open one. Error -1856: an unknown error occurred (filename.mov) I've uninstalled quicktime, rebooted and reinstalled with no luck. I've searched these forums and googled the error number but can't find anything. Does anyone know what might be going on? Thanks.

Actually, I can't open anything in quicktime anymore. I've tried opening avis, mov, mp4 and m4a files... all give the same error message and number. I've reinstalled both qt and itunes but no luck.

  • Example -- double-click to rotate shape 36 degrees

This is my first attempt to cause Visio to handle double-click on a shape.
I need to rotate the shape 36 degrees each time it's double-clicked.
Here's what I have right now:
    Enable developer tab in ribbon
    Select shape
in developer tab, click "Show ShapeSheet"
In ShapeSheet, enable "Events" box to show
For "EventDblClick", enter the formula to handle double-clicks
    Formula I'm trying:
    =SETF(GetRef(Angle),MODULUS(GetVal(Angle)+36,360))
    Result when I double-click:
"Shape protection, container, and/or layer properties prevent complete execution of this command."
However, I couldn't find any protection being applied to this shape.  Ideas or suggestions?  Pointers to existing solutions and walkthroughs welcome.
My goal: Create a specific shape which rotates by 36 degrees on each double-click, and export it as a stencil.

I eventually discovered the problem.  It was a mistake of a someone new to this.  Here's the correct formula, which works quite well:
    =SETF(GetRef(Angle),ANG360(GetVal(Angle)+RAD(36)))
In a nutshell, I was confused because the display in the datasheet showed the value in degrees, even though it appears to have required the value in radians.

  • Rotating image moves pixels out of canvas.

I was under the impression that using Image => Image Rotation => => 90 CW would rotate everything ninety degrees clockwise, but I guess I don't understand exactly how it works.
When makin a very simple 2 pixel pattern, I filled the right pixel with black and left the other pixel empty. I then wanted to see how the pattern would look horizontally so I rotated the image 90 deg clockwise and found that my black pixel was moved off of the canvas.
Next I tried some testing to see if I could better understand what was happening. I found that if I rotate the image CCW then the pixel would be in the correct place, but if I fill the left pixel with black instead of the right I would have to rotate CW to keep the fill from going off canvas. I thout that maybe I was rotating the canvas only, but when testing a larger image I found that wasn't the case.
I could go on, but basically I can't figure out how to rotate an image with 2 pixels ninety degrees. Kind of silly, what am I doing wrong?

Doesn't happen on my end. Maybe a video driver issue?

  • Hide the title bar of a movie window like QuickTime X

Love the feature of QuickTime X of not showing the title bar/the control bar of a movie window (still waiting for Pro version, though. Is it coming out at all?)
I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a way/tweak to hide the title bar of a iTunes movie window like QuickTime X.
    Thanks.

What child window are you referring to? Do you mean a browser window opened with web.show_document?
If so, you can use javascript to hide browser toolbars and so on. Search the forum for some javascript examples where windows are opened with toolbar=no.
