have no problem. Do a backup of all your data, music, pictures, etc
before as protection.
If your iPhone has been jailbroken or hacked to work with a carrier
other than the one the iPhone was originally locked to, you may

Since the update, Itunes says that no SIM card is detected, and the iPhone says that it cannot be activated. It also obviously does not detect any network.
I tried restarting the phone several times, removing the SIM card several times, but it did not change anything, the SIM is still not detected.

You do not need to keep posting the same thing over and over again.

My daughter has bought a 3gs which is currently running 4.1. Can it be updated any further and how would she do this? when the phone is plugged into iTunes and we click the update button is just says iTunes is running the latest version and doesn't update the phone.

I tried updating my iPhone 3GS to the iOS 5 software and during the process of trying to update my phone is it saying that it cannot activate my iphone. it says that it could not be activated because there activation server is temporarily unavailable. Also when i plug it into itunes it simply said that there is no sim card installed even though there is! PLEASE HELP!!!

i shut the iphone down and waited 5 seconds restarted it and it had me log back in, add my apple id, go to terms and conditions I was then able to hit agree and get past the screen.

You can't because you are only able to update your phone to the latest iOS, so it will have to be iOS 6 or nothing.

Please read and follow the instructions of the Apple link you posted from. Please note, if you have a 3G as opposed to a 3GS, you can not upgrade above iOS 4.2.1.

Downgrading the iOS is not supported, and likely has caused the problems you are experiencing.
You'll need to go elsewhere for support.

I don't follow your instructions... mine goes Settings->General->Cellular and from there it's just on/off options for Cellular Data, Enable 3G, Data Roaming, etc. Or I could go Settings->General->Profile APN Carrier Settings but when I click that it just shows as verified but no Visual Voice APN or MMS Settings. If I click More Details it goes to Signing Certificate which has a bunch of parameters for unlockit.co.nz but I am unable to change anything.
I just updated my iphone 3GS to IOS 6 and my internet (wifi and 3G), voice and text all work, but the only thing I can't do is send/receive pictures via text message. I am using At&t prepaid sim. I tried turning off the phone completely but I'm trying to avoid a complete restore.. at least until I can understand the problem better! Any help would be appreciated!

I've been weary about updating my iphone 3gs from ios 4 (4.3.5 to be exact) to the new ios 5. I didn't have a problem sitting on an older update untill my phone started acting up and the only thing to do to fix it is to do a restore. itunes is forcing me to update in order to restore (didn't used to do that untill the new itunes update came out a while back...makes me angry) therefore causing a bit of concern with me. I do recall how the 3G acted when the ios 4 came out, and my worry is will the iphone 3Gs do something simmilar or worse. What are the experiances you guys have had with it, both good and bad, I'm curious. Also is it a good idea to update the 3gs to the ios 5 or not.

There is no supported way to downgrade.
Have you tried replacing your SIM card?

I want to make sure I'm doing it in a way that will keep important things like my text history intact on the new phone.
Since that's not something that is "synced" but I believe is rather kept in the backup, does that mean I have to "restore" the new phone from a backup of the old phone? And if so, does the ios have to match on the backup?

I am not at that computer now, but I did check via windows update & with the check updates menu choice in the itunes program - neither indicated a newer version of itunes is available. (it is a vista computer).
The itunes software on the computer displays my ipod & the current ios (4.3.2), and indicates a newer ios is available (6.1.3). When I choose "update", I am taken to Windows Exploer and prompted to choose a file to open. it is as if the "update" button has the incorrect code attached to it.
The ipod is working, but there are several app I would like to install, but I can't with the current ooperating system.
