If I update my iPhone 5, does it carrier locks it?

I just bought the new iPhone 5. Unlocked, ordered it online. Unlocked because I am in Canada, but I'm going back to Brazil in a few months, so I needed it to work in Brazil too.
But then, my friend who owns an iPhone 4/4S told me that if I updated it, I wouldn't be able to use it in Brazil, because it would be locked as a normal iPhone 5 bought in the stores.
Can you tell me if that is true? Because there's 6.0.1 out now.

No, that's not true, if your phone is officially unlocked. You have nothing to worry about.

If the phone has been officially unlocked by your service provider then it should remain unlocked.

Sounds like your iPhone was hacked to work with other than
the original cellular provider and the update relocked the iPhone
to that provider. You must contact that provider to see if they
offer unlocking and if you qualify. Only the cellular provider to
which the iPhone is locked can unlock it.
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>Carrier?
Where/how did you acquire this iPhone? Who is your wireless
provider?
Not wise to post your Serial Number in the clear - I have asked
the hosts to remove it.

Hi I have a jailbroke,unlocked 3G,8G Iphone bought about a year ago, it has the 2.22 firmware but alot of apps I want require a newer firmware version.If I update my unlocked iphone firmware to the most current will that effect my unlocking and jailbroke status? Updating that iPhone to any newer version of the iOS will lock it to whichever carrier the phone was with originally.

Installed the latest update in Iphone 5 and it has locked up. I had the phone charger attached and on Wifi. I have a picture of the apple on the screen and that is it.

Updated my Iphone 5 with the latest software. The phone was plugged in and on WIFI. It showed the update was installing and then the screen appeared with just a Apple insignia on it. Phone is locked up. Cannot turn on. Is there a reset or anything available to fix this issue. Thanks for any help.

HELP! I want to know whether my hand-me-down iPhone 4 is SIM/carrier-locked or not. I was given an iPhone 4 which I think was purchased outside the Philippines.

I was given an iPhone 4 which I believed was purchased outside the Philippines. The previous owner had it jailbroken but something went wrong so it was stuck on DFU mode. So when it was given to me, I had it restored and updated via iTunes to iOS 5.1. I bought a micro-sim and inserted it on the sim tray. iTunes was able to detect the SIM card number and there was NO MESSAGE like the sim card is not supported whatsoever which can be usually seen in unsupported simcard. I thought everything went smoothly. But when I tried to set-up the phone, the SLIDE TO UNLOCK button is unresponsive. It doesn't work so I was stuck there and my iPhone cannot be accessed because of that. What shall I do? I have tried doing the hard reset several times, it still didn't work. I have tried restoring my iPhone three times but the slide to unlock is still unresponsive. I think the iPhone was able to detect my carrier simcard since it shows on the top corner the name of my carrier, mobile signal and 3g network. Now I am wondering as to why the slide to unlock button is unresponsive? Was it because of my iPhone LCD or was it because the iPhone is locked? Please help.

according to some blogs, if the sim card you are using is unsupported, iTunes will show you a message that the sim card you are using is unsupported. But when i opened itunes, I didn't see that message. Instead, it was able to detect my sim card number. So I guess, the simcard is supported. It isn't the original sim, though. Then the phone was able to detect the mobile carrier, mobile and 3g signals. So iam wondering whether my phone is locked or was it a hardware problem?

Iphone 3gs does not turn on after ios 6 update

After the ios6 update, my iphone 3gs does not turn on. I see the apple logo, after a minute, it boots again and i see the logo again. This process seems to continue like a circle. After a search the net, i see that i am not the only one. A quick fix and suggestions please, as i need my phone of course.
Btw, Apple, i know that this is an old hardware and i will buy the new iphone 5 when it is available here in my country in December. But of course, you claşmed this update supports my 3gs, you should immediately find a fix

Well, i don't see an another solution possible; you should try again and again to restore. Btw, my phone seemed to operate strange (even the stock mail app began to crash) so i tried hard reset (home button + sleep/wake button until seeing the apple logo). After that i found my phone again in dfu mode this night so began restoring again now.
It seems that apple didn't tested ios6 enough with the 3GS. I have a 32 GB phone so this will be near 60 gb download from the icloud over my broadband connection.

This means the iPhone was hacked to be unlocked. The 3GS was not sold in the US as officially unlocked.
Restoring an iPhone with iTunes that was hacked to be unlocked or installing a firmware update on an iPhone that was hacked to be unlocked re-locks the iPhone to the carrier the iPhone was sold as carrier locked when new. In this case, re-locked with ATT.

I live in the UK and want to buy an iPhone from O2. End of next year I will move to Germany, where T-Mobile DE is the official carrier.
I don't intend to use the phone on both networks.
Due to the permanent carrier lock it wouldn't be possible to use the "O2 UK iPhone" in Germany - no even on the O2 network. According to the O2 UK customer service they are not able to unlock the phone, even if the contract has ended.
What is Apple's approach in such a case?

Apple sells a carrier locked iPhone to the designated cellular provider for the iPhone in a given country based on the agreement Apple has with the designated cellular provider. The iPhone is sold as officially unlocked by the designated cellular provider for the iPhone in a country where the iPhone is sold as officially unlocked - again by the agreement Apple has with the designated cellular provider that sells the iPhone as officially unlocked, and it is the carrier that does the unlocking.
Since O2 requires that the iPhone is sold as carrier locked with O2 only in the UK based on their agreement with Apple for the iPhone sold in the UK, this is up to O2 and O2 only.
Even if O2 decided to unlock your iPhone for use with T-Mobile in Germany, T-Mobile would not provide you any support for such an iPhone. Support for and if a problem develops that requires an exchange under warranty is handled by O2 and Apple in the UK only for an iPhone that was sold in the UK.
Before you move to Germany or shortly thereafter, sell your iPhone to someone else in the UK and use the proceeds to purchase an iPhone in Germany, which is sold as carrier locked with T-Mobile only in Germany.
Apple will not ask a carrier to do this, just as RIMM wouldn't ask the designated carrier for a carrier locked Blackberry to unlock a Blackberry for a customer. This is up to the designated carrier for a carrier locked phone only - for any carrier locked phone.

My Iphone 4 does not come with a SOFTWARE UPDATE option.

My partner bought my iphone 4 version 4.2 about two years ago from a well known store. He got himself one at the same time but i cannot update mine because it does not come with an option in settings, general that allows me to update it. All of my apps are useless as they need at least iSO5 to run. I cannot check my bank accounts or anything. I have rung and spoke to apple many of times and followed all the steps to try and update. As this is not my fault and the iphone had not been loaded with the correct software there should be something APPLE could do free of charge!!!! I really need help as i cannot afford a replacement or want one. I just dont know what to do anymore!!

This sounds more like a hardware issue.
Have you checked that the dock connector port is not dirty?
