If you update via Settings>General>Software Update (starting with iOS 5), nothing is lost is update is successful. However, sometimes glitches occur and you have to restore via iTunes

Upgrading from 10.6 will loose Rosetta and therefore, all legacy software that relies on Rosetta. That includes things like MS Office versions older than 2008.
You need to make a backup of your content, on an external drive, before updating so you have a means for reverting if necessary. To revert to an older version of Mac OS X you have to erase the hard drive and then reinstall the older Mac OS X and all content. That is easiest if done from a complete backup of your current system.

Upgrading my IOS will delete my files if I don't do a backup??

I want to upgrade to the new IOS, and I want to know if I do it, will my files be erase? or do I have to do a back up first???? Please help!!!

This really would be a more appropriate question for the forum for your iOS device (iPad, iPhone or iPod touch) but anyway, if you upgrade from iOS 4 to iOS 5, yes, all your files on the iOS device will be erased. So you need to make sure that all your apps and content are synched to iTunes on your computer and that you have a current backup of the iOS device (if you sync the device before running the upgrade, it should back up automatically). Then once the upgrade is complete, restore the device from your most recent backup and sync back your apps and content.
If you already have iOS 5 or 5.1 and just want to upgrade to iOS 5.1.1, then nothing should be removed, though it's still wise to have all your content synched and a current backup before performing the upgrade.

Those are not your programs. To keep them is illegal. You should erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS and then add applications that you actually own. I know that's not the answer your looking for but what you're asking about is software piracy. Sorry that's the way it is.

Hello. I cannot send or receive Yahoo mails on my i-pad. G-Mail is OK. All Apps are OK. Wi-Fi is OK. I-Cloud is OK. 3G is OK. All OK except Yahoo Mail. The message on i-pad is "cant receive/send mail. the connection to the server failed." My Mac Computer is fine,mails sent and received. My i-pod is fine. Mails sent and received on both.. Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

No, Erase All Contents and Settings restores the device to factory condition but with the current iOS version.

Thank You for all your help. My son has been trying to get me to update for sometime but I was so afraid I would loose my messages & even my contacts I'm Not sure will be saved either. Since I have to update my contacts thru my iphone since verizon doesnt support this I have NO clue where they are backed up to & if not doen every 30 days u can loose them so I have a reminder set to do this every 30 days.
