If i upgrade osx will i need to re-install applications such as Photoshop

Hi I have a 4 year old macbook pro running OSX 10.5.8
It's now starting to run quite slow so I was thinking about upgrading to SnowLeopard and then Lion.
I understand that I have to backup my current data which I have now done.
I understand that I need to download SnowLeopard to then install it, but I'm worried I will need my original disks for some of my software; iWork '09, Adobe illustrator and Photoshop, which I'm not sure where my original disks are anymore.
Will I need to re-install these any of this software if I do an upgrade of osx?

No. However, you need to make sure your apps will run under Lion if you decide to go that route:

Also, although Apple states you need SL to upgrade to Lion, fact is if you purchase the Lion USB key from Apple, you can go directly to Lion. Make sure your computer meets the requirements:

  • If I do a clean install on my MacBook Pro will I be able to re-install apps (FCP, Aperture, MS Office etc.) from a Time Machine backup, or will I need the original install DVDs with authorization codes?

    I have two questions...
    1) If I do a clean install on my MacBook Pro will I be able to re-install apps (FCP, Aperture, MS Office etc.) from a Time Machine backup, or will I need the original install DVDs with authorization codes? (because I don't have them)
    2) Has anyone ever seen anything like this before on their computers?
The Apple Genius' were stumped by my laptop issues and said they'd never seen anything like it before and recommended I did a clean install. Below you can see my trash bin, and if you look at the "Empty" button it reads "N201" and then there's the "N39" to the left of it. You can also see these numbers over by the folder area--"SD5, SD6, SD7." But that's not all...
When I right click on items I see the numbers again. Instead of "Open with" I get "N152" and there's an "N35" and "LB1" towards the bottom.
I have no idea what's going on so I'm just going to do a clean install on my machine but I don't want to lose my apps. I don't have the original install DVDs for them anymore. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

You don't lose them.  You can always redownload them from the app store after you log back in with your Apple ID.
    "Buy, download, and even redownload.
You can install apps on every Mac you use and even download them again. This is especially convenient when you buy a new Mac and want to load it with apps you already own."

After install of Mountain Lion I have no facetime. It is nowhere in hd and ap store will not allow download.
Will I need to re-instal ML in order to get it back?

    Where are you, geographically?
    I might suggest:
    Give this a try:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
After this is completed download and install 10.8.4 Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo).
If this doesn't work, then reinstall Mountain Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • If I upgrade from Mac OS v 10.5.8 to 10.6 Snow leopard will my installed applications such as timemachine and MS Offfice for Mac 2008 still work?

If I upgrade from Mac OS v 10.5.8 to 10.6 Snow leopard will my installed applications such as MS Office for Mac 2008 still work? Will time machine files created under OS 10.5 still be accessible?

    Yes

  • If I upgrade to Snow Leopard, will I have to re-install software such as Logic Studio?

If I upgrade to Snow Leopard, will I have to re-install software such as Logic Studio? Do I lose EVRYTHING?

You normally will not lose anything, but you may have to reinstall some applications since some applications place files in locations that may not be carried over to the new installation. Logic Studio may well fall into this category, though I don't know for sure. You should confirm compatability of your applications with Snow Leopard before you upgrade, since some applications may require upgrading to work properly (or at all). You should also have a good backup - I usually suggest making a complete clone of your current hard drive to an external drive - before attempting the upgrade.
    Regards.

  • Will I need any other virus protection such as McAfee for my computer if I'm using Firefox?

I'm purchasing a new home computer and would like to know if I will need any further virus protection, such as McAfee or Webroot? Is the protection from Firefox sufficient enough or should I get something else as well? Thank you.
    Neil

Firefox is a browser, it is not a antivirus program, of course you must install a antivirus program of your choice.
An excellent add-on to support as a supplement your antivirus program which is provides extra protection to your Firefox is [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/noscript/?src=hp-dl-mostpopular NoScript]. See it and your choice is yours.
    thank you

  • I am running 10.7.4 with Java installed an applets enabled, if I update to 10.8, will I need to re-install Java?

Does Java installation and "Enable java applets" carry through if you upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion or does Java have to be re-installed?

    Kappy
Thanks, I was aware that a clean install erases the drive and that, since 10.7.3, Java is not part of the OS X install, but could be easily added via java preferences.app.  I was not aware of how the 10.8 installer behaved when Java had been installed on a prior version.  I appreciate the help.

Hit the same thing, I found a work around.
    1. Disconnect your internet.
    2. Start CS3
    3. You'll get an error screen, click "never register."
    Hope it works for you.

  • Since upgrading, both our wireless printers are still visible, but OSX will not connect with them.  Both work via connecting from other sources via the same wireless router (airport).  What do I need to do to get my printing/scanning working again?

Since upgrading, both our wireless printers are still visible, but OSX will not connect with them.  Both work via connecting from other sources via the same wireless router (airport).  What do I need to do to get my printing/scanning working again?

First thing to try is reset Printing System:
OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
Next would be reset the router (power off 15 secs then back on). And, 2 minutes later, reset the printers 1 by 1.

Will the new iPhone 4s be compatible with my 5 or 6 year old iMac that I upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.8)? Or will I need to upgrade the operating system on the iMac?

go to apple.com/iphone and look up tech specs.
    You'll find this:
    Mac System Requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
    OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.5 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
Apple ID (required for some features)
    Internet access

  • Using Windows 7 RC on bootcamp: will i need upgrade or full?

I'm running Windows 7 RC (Ultimate) on my macbook pro via bootcamp. I'm anticipating the expiration on it and I need to know if it will i need to buy the upgrade or the standalone for windows 7 ultimate when it is released in october?

The upgrade version for $49 is thru July 11th. The expiration on RC is not until MARCH though.
And a clean install is recommended path.
I would NOT buy Ultimate this go-around! Home Premium is fine for most anyone.
