If I upgrade to Lion do I need to reinstall my third party software?  Office, etc

If you install Lion in place and are using versions supported in Lion, no.  You should check with your third party software vendors to see whether upgrades are required to work with Lion.  For example, since you mentioned Office, the 2008 and 2011 versions are compatible with Lion.  The 2004 version is not. It is generally a good idea to upgrade your apps first, and then upgrade to Lion, as you may sometimes need the older version of the app to migrate data to the new version.

    Wait for testing.
Do your own testing. Clone your system first.
Do a clean install of 10.9 on another drive and then use that with Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant if you want.
I would not update over the old system - at least not w/o a safety backup net to catch you.
There are always a couple things that need fixing. And it may be that they won't know until they have the final bits and do their own inhouse testing now that they have the actual release version.

No, but do make a complete backup of your system just in case.

  • I,ve got the mid 2011 2.7 ghz imac running m lion. Should i use bootcamp or third-party software?

The reason i ask is due to my lack of faith in apples software. I,ve tried s leopard, lion and now m lion and my imac is still slower than all my friends windows computers. whether its internet based or non internet based its always slow. in my defense the imac choice was based on my ipad 2 which is ace. the imac cost over £1300 and i expected a lot better. Anyway i use it for gaming quite a lot and i,m prepared to upgrade the graphics card and buy windows 7 or 8 just for game accessability and the option of being able to use a gamepad that actually works with the imac. Are there any risks or disadvantages involved with using boot camp. I don,t have much confidence in Apples software as every system i,ve used has bricked my computer and caused me to reinstall due to apple software conflicts. (Apple tech supports theory and they charged me £35 for this little nugget even though i bought the imac Jan 2012 new).  i refuse to pay for a backup solution as i think it should be free like system restore on windows. I purposefully don,t store anything important on the imac due to past probs so losing data i can live with. Slowing it down further i cannot. Please help.

you can't upgrade the video cards on imacs
it's confusing what you are asking bootcamp is apples software which let you run windows native on your imac
the alternative is parallels or virtualbox if you need to run windows apps and those being emulated and will not have full access to the video card would not be good for gaming

  • How do you remove a third party software update on Lion?

A friend recently pulled an update to Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1.  The update version is 3.6.2.  Consequently, RDP does not work when connecting to a Windows machine remotely.
NOTE:  I realize Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1 is no longer supported for OSX Lion and later.  However, I use this same client successfully on a 2009 Intel MBP upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I did NOT pull this third party software update and RDP works without fail.
    Troubleshooting steps to date:
    Attempted Uninstall/reinstall of RDP.
    Failed.
My goal is to "roll back" this specific application prior to the software update without having to restore OSX.
Please help locate the specifc program files to be removed.  I'm willing to remove manually through Terminal with the right instruction.
    Thanks!

Would Also Recommend that you do a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive Before attempting any Major Upgrade...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
Also... For Lion... Check the Compatibility of Third Party Applications you may be using...

How much of a hurry are you in, and are you considering upgrading to Lion?
File Vault on Snow Leopard only encrypts home folders you select, and doesn't work well with Time Machine.
But Lion will have "full disk encryption" of local or external disks.  See File Vault 2 here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

sure pretty simple.  make a backup of your current settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766?viewlocale=en_US
then restore device from old backup you need pics off of
    then import pics to computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
you may need to save pics to camera roll first
then restore the new backup and sync pics back to phone via itunes

  • Need Third Party software recommendation - duplicates management and remova

I have read several dozen discussions addressing duplicate file/song removal from itunes, and many recommend third party software. While there is a 'show exact duplicates' command in itunes at Shift:File->Show exact duplicates, in my case all it did was show all of my songs, 8,440 instead of the actual 4,220 that are in my library. I'm not sure of the purpose of this command, perhaps it works for someone but not me.
Absent the ability to add a user defined column in itunes that would have the capability to perform an Excel-like function to number each row, allowing the sorting of odd/even numbers or some such scheme, I guess users with thousands of songs who have fallen into the duplication trap are required to purchase third party software to correct this, or just go ahead an begin whatever medical procedures purport the relief of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Does anyone have recommendations of software they have actually used, paid, share or free?
    Thanks.

Would that I be so lucky! I reinstalled my Vista OS and was adding back all of the programs and data, so all of the music had the same 'date added'. However, I have just this moment solved my own problem. Here is what worked for me:
    1. I downloaded freeware from the website LCIBrosSolutions.com which does indeed identify duplicates in the iTunes file and will erase them.
    2. However, now you are stuck with broken links (i.e. "!" songs) in your iTunes, and need to eliminate them. What I did was go into the View choices, and picked something that I would never use. In my case, I picked "Episode Number" and added it as a column. Then, I went to "select all" and highlighted all 8000+ song names. Right clicking gave me "Get Info" after the warning, and then I went to the video tab and entered the number 4. I un-highlighted, sorted on the Episode Number Column, and since the song names with no real content would not accept the number 4, they were at the bottom, and were all duplicates. I deleted them.
The way to verify that you do indeed have broken links is to sort by song name, and see that every other one does have an ! by it.

  • How do I make a blu ray DVD on my iMac. I bought Toast and I have Verbatim BD-R recordable discs. The site says I also need third party software to do this....which one and what kind???

How do I make a blu ray DVD on my iMac? I have purchased TOAST and the blu ray discs, but now I find I need a third party software to do this? What kind or which software???

Have no BD-Burner - but I think I tried to Save as a DiskImage of full movie in BD-Quality
    Roxio says:
    Drag, drop, burn
    Drag, drop, burn
Toast 11 is the easiest and fastest way to burn your music, video, photo and data files on to CD, DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ for both Mac and PC. Archive up to 50 GB on high capacity Blu-ray Discs.
Indicates to me that a full BD-movie could be burned as this.

  • Upgrading to Lion will I have to reinstall Parallels

Will I have to reinstall all my programs -I am on the road and I need my Parallels- to upgrade to Lion?

You shouldn't need to however I would recommend that you check with Parallels on the web site to see you have a version that will run well on Lion. If you can hold off until you get back to your office I would strongly recommend that. if you are on the road you may not have an up-to-date backup and you ALWAYS want that whenever doing any OS X upgrades.

  • When installing the new OS Lion, do you need to reinstall the programs currently on your Macbook Pro such as Photoshop and Lightroom?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks

It depends how you do it. If you do the auto update - i.e. you download Lion and let Mac OS do everything for you, then the answer is 'No'. It will try to install all apps that are compatible with Lion.
However, that may not be the best way to upgrade, especially if you have a lot of legacy material. I wrote a post on my blog about upgrading which you may want to consider: http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/10/17/upgrading-to-lion-the-golden-rules/
