I want to be able to print to a network printer with my IPad and IPhone with IOS 5.0.1. Seems like there is a limited number of printers that can "AirPlay" from these devices. I have an Airport Express and I know how to connect a printer and set it up as a network printer, my question is can I wirelessly print from my Ipad and iPhone then. Seems too easy for what appears to be a limited set of new printers that have that have Thai function built in.

Yes, the AEx goes into router mode.. plug in via ethernet to the modem port.. you then need to power cycle the cable modem.. it might need to be off for 20min or more before it will lose the previous connection and start afresh with the Express.

About ~20 hours later, this ended up solving itself. We can send email using the '.icloud' email from both the iPad and iPhone. It is in fact possible to extend your network using WDS. I say this under the assumption that your statement regarding the WDS capabilities of the Bwrg router is correct. However, keep in mind that you cannot use a WPA or WPA2 password with a WDS extended network. You must either use no encryption or use WEP. Unfortunately some routers require WEP passwords that use either 10 or 26 digits ONLY while the express uses a 13 digit password.
This can be a troubling problem considering that most people need a wifi password to ensure safe and secure browsing.

Apple does not specify a model number in their product information, but it is A1392 in the U.S. I do not know if Apple uses different model numbers in other countries.

Airport Express dropping out constantly so I can't print wirelessly

I have an iMacG5 running OSX 10.3.9. I have a DLink wireless router which creates my wireless network that the iMac connects to. Also, as my printer as at the other end of the room, I have an airport express connected via USB to the printer so I can print wirelessly. Everything worked like a dream for about 12 months. Until recently I had no security on this network and although I was aware this was risky, I was reluctant to change anything because it all worked so well. But my paranoia got the better of me and I changed the DLink to WPA security. Ever since then, the airport express has acted very strangely. The connection dropped and I was required to do a hard reset. I did that and everything worked. I felt so smug that I had worked out a computer issue! Little did I know that as soon as I shut down the system the airport express dropped out again. I have since discovered that I don't actually need to shut down for the thing to drop out. It just does it of its own accord.
I have contacted AppleCare 3 times and spent a total of about 4 hours on this to date. No luck. They suggested interference. However my airport icon usually shows either 3 or 4 bars and there is no difference when the thing drops out.
The only thing I have learned is that Airport Express does not have to be reset all the time. In my situation, it is best to just unplug it, let it rest for about 30 seconds and then you should be able to see the thing in the airport admin utility. It does take a while and several rescans in the utility, but eventually it does show up. This at least means I don't have to constantly set it up to join the network.
In fact, really it is a doddle to print! I don't know why people like to just go File-Print when you can go through the delight of getting out of your chair, unplugging Airport Express, waiting 30 seconds, looking at the dust under the cupboard thinking I really must get that, plugging the airport express back in, watching the light change from green to amber, to flashing amber, wait for it...wait for it...it's not happening....waiting...finally - green!. Back to the computer, go to Finder - Applications - Utilities - Airport Admin Utility, not showing up, rescan, not there, rescan, rescan, rescan, still not there, rescan, oh good, airport express is showing up. Now, go to Printer setup utility, delete the printer that is there, then add printer, select rendezvous, add my hp, OK......now I can hit File - Print.
Has anyone got any ideas on how I can join the boring legions of people who are oblivious to the joys of printing my way?

External HD connected to my AirPort Extreme...Can it be shared by iPads and iPhones, or only by a full computer?

The question pretty much states it...My vision when I chose and purchased this router was to make use of an existing hard drive by connecting it USB creating a network drive. So far, the only use I am really getting from it is the daily Time Capsule backup. Though it DOES function as a network drive from my MacBook, my dream was to utilize it for storing my movie collection and be able to watch them from an iPad or iPhone. What it looks like, after having the drive connected and active for a while now, is that only the computer will ever be able to access it. Am I correct that this my only option, or is there some voodoo that will also allow use of the drive from the more mobile devices as well? Also, if I had instead purchased the AirPort Time Capsule with built-in HD, would it have been more suited to my intent of creating a "movie hub"? Thanks.

You can share files with iOS devices by using filebrowser or other file app.
To play movies on the iOS device though you would need a player that is outside of itunes.. because itunes will not play from the router.. it has no media extensions.. neither does the TC which merely adds an internal disk but is otherwise identical.
So look up how to play movies with a player on the iOS.. there is several available I am sure.

BUT itunes depends on a computer running in the network.. so storing the itunes library on the AE is useless.. and will slow the network down no end. It is much better to put files where they can be accessed.. ie directly on the computer.

Using the Airport express as a wireless network adapter

I have a mac with no wireless network card but I have an extra Airport express. I would like to plug the mac into teh ethernet port of the AE and then use it to get onto my homes wireless network...
Is this possible? I have been trying to do this for hours and I cannot get a config that works. I can use it to setup a wirless printer just fine, why not my computer?

I'm having the same networking problem. Out of curiosity, though, how would you plug the mac into the ethernet port of AE? Wouldn't you have to plug the modem into the ethernet port? My Airport Express only has one ethernet port. Just curious how you would get internet to your AE without plugging the modem to it.
I went out and bought a LinkSys switch, trying to alleviate my problem of having to switch between being able to use my Mac Pro desktop (wired, due to no wireless card yet) and being able to use my laptops, PS3, etc. wirelessly by switching the ethernet cable constantly from the Mac Pro to the Airport Express. So, I bought the switch, but I can't get my network configured to where I can run everything at the same time. I'm still having to switch cables around. Any suggestions? Or do I just have to bite the bullet and have the wireless card installed?

Using wired Airport Express to extend wireless network

I am considering getting an Airport Express to extend my wireless network in a part of my house where it's really weak. The room I want to use it in actually has an Ethernet network drop and it is connected to my Airport Extreme on the other side of the house.
I've looked at the manual, and the only example it gives for extending a network is wireless. Since the network is very weak where I want to use it, I was wondering whether I could use the Ethernet port for the incoming signal. Is that possible?
I have an older AX (the b/g model) that I use in a similar way: it's on an ethernet port, but it broadcasts its own, different (slower, since it's the older model), wi-signal. So I didn't want to do that: I'd like the new unit to be practically transparent and broadcast the same wi-fi as the main signal.
Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so, could you let me know if this is possible?

Configure the new AirPort Express as follows using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab located below the row of icons to assign a name to the Express, a device password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab and configure as follows:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g comatible) is a good general choice
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as the AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Passwrod = Same password as the AirPort Extreme network
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon
Click the Internet Connect tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the Express to restart
Very important...power down the entire network...all devices....order is not important
Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run for a few moments by itself
Start the AirPort Exreme the same way
Start the AirPort Express the same way
Start other devices one at a time about a minute apart
You now have what is known as a "roaming" network. Computers will automatically log on to the router with the strongest signal as they "roam" around the house.

HT1515 The wifi router I use to connect to the internet is in the room directly above me. I am trying to use my airport express to extend the network for better coverage down here. It works fine with the setting "join a network" but will not extend it.

I assume that you already have one Express configured to "join" the network.
Power up the other Express for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button firmly on the back of the device for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN <--> port on the "joining" Express to the WAN "O" port on the second Express.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Other WiFi Devices
Click on AirPort Express
Click the Other Options button and select the option to Create a new wireless network.
Follow the guided steps, and ignore the step about powering off the modem and restarting.
Once the Express restarts, it will still have a slow, blinking amber light. Open AirPort Utility and click on the amber dot, then select the option to ignore the Double NAT error so the Express will display a green light.
Select the wireless network that you named during the setup of the second Express and enter the password to connect to the network.

Using an Airport Express to extend my network range

I live in a three storey house, my broadband modem/router is on the first floor and my Mac is on the third.
I noticed that I kept losing my internet connection and the guy in the Apple shop recommended that I buy an Airport Express to extend the range of my current wireless network (and thereby achieve a strong connection on the third floor).
I have bought the A. Express and my question is, do I need to plug my A. Express into the router or can I simply plug it into a plug socket on the third floor (with nothing wired up to it)?
What is the best way to extend my wireless network range?
Your help is greatly appreciated. I have read the user manual but it is not clear on this point.

No, unfortunately the Apple guy did not explain that I needed an Apple router/modem in order to extend my network range with the AirPort Express - how disappointing. I will return the product and look for an alternative.

AirPort base stations have essentially three network choices: join, create, or extend.
If you want to connect to a specific network, something must "create" that network. An Express can do that, but it must derive its connection via Ethernet since it cannot simultaneously become a client of one wireless network while creating another.
It is exactly as CRMDVM wrote but that's why.

I know that you can use the Express to extend an Airport network. But can i extend any other network or does it have to specifically be an airport network. As i have a BT Voyager 2091 at the moment for my wireless needs, i wanted an airport but this was free.

Though you can't extend the BT Voyager 2091 you can with the BT Voyager 2100.
I don't think BT will upgrade your router for free, but you could always ask.
