If I were to buy osx mountain lion from another computer, could I install it on a crashed macbook?

I crashed my system and cannot boot from disk or anyting else.  I'm not illiterate with computers, but this is a thing I'm stumped on.
I get the install screen/disk utility/ etc screen.  I cannot reinstall the software or repair it because it was not bought.  I found it on a third-party site.
it says that "your computer did not purchase Lion" therefore I can't reinstall/or repair/or reboot.
mac is smart.
I want to know if I spend 20 on the new osx update on another computer with my apple id, could I install it on here.

Like you said, "mac is smart".
When the installer comes online and contacts Apple, sending your AppleID and the Mac's hostid, it knows you didn't purchase the cat for THAT specific Mac.

    Dear all, I have just bought a MacBook pro with osx lion on 25th last month. I wanted to know if I can use the methods described above to update to osx mountain lion or I have to buy osx mountain lion from the app store?

    Here are the rules to qualify for the free upgrade:

  • I'm now running OSX v. 10.6.8.  I purchased OSX Mountain Lion from the app store

    I'm now running OSX v. 10.6.8.  I purchased OSX Mountain Lion from the app store & after about 40 minutes of "downloading" (started 40 or so minutes ago) my iMac restarted & I signed in.  But OSX 10.6.8 is still there & the image of OSX Mountain Lion is in my dock with the caption "OSX Mountain Lion -- Paused" !!!  ...Now ANOTHER 20 minutes have passed & no change nor other prompts nor info have come up!!  WHAT'S GOING ON???  PLEASE HELP!!! ~~~THANK YOU!!!

    THANKS SO VERY MUCH, mende1, for so quickly responding to my plea for HELP!!
    I had never turned my iMac off so I still don't understand why the download paused, & when I looked in my Applications folder there was no Mountain Lion, but your words, "However, you can pause and resume the download as many times as you want"  encouraged me to look deeper & try harder!!  I clicked & double-clicked (& multi-clicked!) the Mtn Lion icon in my dock to no avail but finally, I clicked & HELD the click for about 7 seconds . . . . . . . & then a little pop-up came & asked me if I want to "Resume the download" or stop it!! So I slid the cursor over to "Resume..." & it's downloading again!! ~~I HOPE!!  I guess 4.4 GB of OS update will take more than a little time to get in there!
    ~~~Again, THANK YOU so MUCH & God less you with a WONDERFUL time with your studies & future dreams!!!
  • Why am I getting a white screen after downloading to OSX Mountain lion from OSX Snow Leopard. What caused this?
    I just upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion from OSX Snow Leopard, thinking this was the thing to do.  I have NEVER had any problems with Snow Leopard, but
    after just a few days after downloading OSX Mountain Lion when I turned the computer on, the screen was white.  Stayed white.  I had to go onto another
    computer to find out what to do.  What caused this and will this happen again?
    Did you see a circle made of light grey hash marks in the center/bottom of the screen?  My iMac is 5 years old and for every update until 10.8.2 I would get the same white screen and the first few times I paniced and thought the machine was broken!  Just let it play out until the desktop comes back up and it should not do it again until you do a system update.
  • If I upgrade to Mountain Lion on the computer that will install it, will my WIFI still work on the computer that cannot be upgraded? I know this is a very basic question
    If I upgrade to Mountain Lion on the computer that will install it, will my WIFI still work on the computer that cannot be upgraded? I know this is a very basic question. Trying to hold out as long as I can, but purchasing an iPhone for Christmas and new iMac next year when warrently expires.
    Thank U very much for the quick reply, I wanted to upgrade this weekend, but still on the fence. I can live with the software that is not compatible, they are on another compuetr, just didn't want the obvious stuff to stop working.
  • HT1349 can i download mountain lion to another computer after i bought it?
    can i download mountain lion to another computer after i bought it
    Yes. The other computer will have to be running Snow Leopard or Lion and sign into the App Store with the same Apple ID used to purchase Mountain Lion.
  • TS3276 Cannot send emails in mountain lion from another wireless network, when are apple gong to fix this
    Cannot send emails in mountain lion from another wireless network, when are apple gong to fix this
    You might be able to set up the SMTP server settings in Mail to authenticate with a password. That may get the email through.
    In Mail Preferences, Accounts, select the account.
    Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) popup menu and select Edit SMTP Server List
    Select the Server and then click the Advanced tab at the bottom.
    Select Password authentication and add your details.
    You might also want to set a custom port (even if it is one of the defaults)
    This solution is normally for an email provider that will not let you send outside of your ISP network, which most prevent. They also must support password authentication of the SMTP server.
  • Cannot buy osx mountain lion as the app store rejects my password
    Help how can i get the osx mountain lion?
    Also keep in mind, that with the recent (or maybe not so recent) password update, the Apple ID password must include:
    At least 1 letter
    At least 1 capital letter
    Must not contain multiple identical consecutive characters (eg: ffffff)
    Must nor be the same as the account name
    Be at least 8 characters total
    and must not be a common password (im not going to lie, i have no idea what that means)
    So if this helps narrow your search down, I'm glad!
    Good luck!
  • HT4759 Before upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion from Lion, my mail and iCloud connections were fine. Now, the connection is almost non-existent (iCloud "connecting" forever,mail icon jumps). My network is good. Any solutions?
    Does anyone know how to eliminate the "jumping mail icon" that stems from iCloud not connecting correctly? I just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion and before, everything was fine, but now the synch between iCloud and mail seems to be out of whack and the "connection doctor" doesn't help and nothing seems to get rid of the problem.
  • How can I downgrade back to OSX Mountain Lion From OSX Mavericks without any Time Machines Backups
    How do I downgrade from OSX Mavericks to OSX Mountain Lion. I do NOT have a Time Machine Backup and I dont want to lose all my files. Is there a way to downgrade WITHOUT a Time Machine Backup and still have all my files????
    Since you need to erase your hard drive in order to downgrade, you would lose all your files. You cannot do what you want without erasing, so make a backup first.
  • Do I have to purchase OSX Mountain Lion for each computer
    I have Apple desktop and laptop that I want to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.  Do I have to purchase the software twice and download it twice for each computer?
    No. One purchase multiple installs. Just have 10.6.8 or Lion installed on each computer. Once you purchase and download you can redownload with the other computer by logging it into the App Store with the same Apple ID. Or you can do this to save the download time:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
        Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
        Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
        the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
        must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
        installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
      a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
          side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
          Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
          partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
          the process has completed.
      d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
          list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
          button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
      f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
         drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
      a. Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
      b. Open Disk Utility.
      c. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
      d. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      e. Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
      f. Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
      g. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
    Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
    As an alternative to the above (you still have to do your own download of Lion/Mountain Lion) you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process of Steps 2 through 4.
  • Want to buy the mountain lion from the pc
    because my is a new mac so when i power on them is showing me to recovery and he told that i need to buy and when  i am but to bought it direct the windows is told my that ineed mac
    Make sure you do a complete system backup (using Time Machine) before you upgrade. I can not emphasize this enough. There's a better than average chance that after dealing with Mountain Lion for a week, you'll want to go back to your old OSX -- if so, it's good to have that option available. This does not apply to Lion users. They already have the one OSX that is worse.
  • Revert back to osx mountain lion from mavericks?
    Since updating to osx mavericks I have encountered numerous issues with my multi display set up to the extent that I have decided to go back to mountain lion
    My question is how do I go about doing this as I have tried to go through the recovery but this only gives me the option to install mavericks
    I have daily back ups so data loss is not a threat and I understand that erasing the drive is the most likely option
    Any help  will be appreciated I need this fixed ASAP as I need the set up for audio & video editing work!!!
    Mistakericks.
  • Downloading OSX Lion & OSX Mountain Lion from the Mac AppStore.
    If I ever download one software on my macbook pro, will I have to buy it twice for my macbook air or will it download as an app via iCloud?
    Hi..
    If you are running v10.6.8 as your profile suggets, you do not need to upgraade to Lion before upgrading to Mountain Lion.
    See Steps 1, 2, and 3, here >   Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
    Upgrading from one Mac OS X to another is not iCloud related.
