If i were to start from scratch (internet wise), is the AirPort Extreme / Express all I need to get online?
Considering buying
You will need a modem and broadband Internet service from a provider, since the AirPorts do not have a built in modem.

My westel modem (that I rent from my phone provider) quit working with the internet. My airport extreme seems to be working from the dsl (phone) connection through the westel, then through the ethernet cabled to the airport extreme. Do I need the modem? Is the ethernet route less efficent that going throught the internet connection? If I don't need the westel modem; how do I make the dsl conection to the pone port in the wall? Thanks for help on this!
Ok, so are you saying that your Internet is or isn't working? Does it work if you plug your computer directly into your computer and bypass the router (make sure you power cycle the modem when you do this)? If it is working this way, then a new modem isn't going to solve a problem with your Internet not working. If it is going slow (try running a speedtest) then you need to call your phone company to have them take a look at why your Internet is slow. If it runs fine this way and then slows back down when you go back through your router there is something else going on. Try unplugging both the modem and the router, let the modem fully sign back in and connect to the Internet, after it gets signed in, plug your router in, and then after it boots up fully, try running the speedtest again...See if that helps any? Sometimes it's just an IP conflict that happens when the dynamic IP that is assigned by your Internet Service Provider changes and the change doesn't flow smoothly.

How do i transfer data from a hard drive to the airport extreme
2 part question...(#1) I do not have a home based Mac/PC. I would like to know how I transfer all my data from iTunes to the Airport Extreme base? I need to free up space on my Mac book Pro, and I don't want to carry a portable hard drive around with me. (#2) After the data is transferred, will I be able to access it on a Apple TV?
The airport extreme has no data storage. Where do you want the data to go?
Does this help:

Starting From Scratch -- How Complicated is This Going To Be?
I am starting from scratch with iChat (and with any video chatting for that matter).
By next week I have to either figure it out and make a video call or find a local set up I can use or fly ot the meeting which I'd really rather not do!
Looking at this forum I see lots of people with problems sharing huge complex error messages. These errors make me wonder if getting going will be too complicated.
What do I need to do? Are there resources / hints / tips / traps / ... people can suggest?
I have a G5 iMac without the built in camera but we do have an old cheap logitech webcam (or I could buy a better camera if needed). And I guess the iMac has a built in mic.
I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 and I believe my iChat is version 3.1.9
My internet connection is a high speed DSL
The call I have to make will just be between two points -- if I'm set up with iChat what do they need to do on their end. They have a professional set up.
At our end we would be three people -- will it be silly the three of us huddled around one computer?
With my first quick look it seems that one either needs to be a .mac or an AOL member -- is that right or are there other options?
If I'm starting from scratch is it worth the trouble to use iChat? Is this the excuse to upgrade to Leopard? Or should I forget iChat and try Skype?
Bla Bla Bla I can go on but I think you get the drift.
Can I do this? Will it work? What is critical? Should I bother?
Thanks
JamesHi,
Start at Ryan's Pages
My Version
The Built-in camera an Mic work.
It is better if the background is uncomplicated and that you are better lit from the front than the Background is (Setting the Screen to something light can also help with this)
You System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming is almost certainly going to need to be changed to 1.5Mpbs.
If you change this whilst iChat is Open Restart iChat to see the new speed.
Depending on your modem and any router you have they may need to have ports opened as iChat uses ports above the ones that are open by default (And allow Web Browsers and Mail to work) much like an On-line Game.
There are test accounts and real people willing to test with
iChat can Video chat to other iChat users whether they have a camera or not.
Some people can have success with Video Chats to AIM on a PC.
Names
You can use the AIM Buddy list with either a AIM or @mac name
There is also a Jabber List which you can use a Jabber ID or a GoogleMail/Google Talk ID with
If you are connecting to PCs then Looking into MeBeam is a better option at present.
Uses a Web Browser and Flash to allow use of your Camera and Mic.
As far as the number of people around one camera goes it may pay to use two or more cameras as this creates a Drop down in iChat in the Preferences > Video section where one person could switch between the cameras.
Alternatively if this is iChat to iChat then up to 4 computers could be connected in the chat (providing you have the Bandwidth at one end of the connection as it will count and 4 chats)
The Critical bit is understanding your LAN
iChat does not like it when it can see two or more Subnets (or Parallels or being wired and wireless at the same time)
A Company LAN is not likely to use two DHCP servers but it is a common mistake on home LANs as web browsing and Mail still work due to the way the ports are opened.
The Logs you see posted are seen in the Pop up at the time of a failed chat if you open it and they are stored in You Home Folder/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors
They can be somewhat interpreted and point you in the right direction at times.
On the whole people keep posting all of the log but the bit below where it says +Binary Images+ is rarely useful and does not need to be posted.
I hope this helps.
Summary.
Get name.
Test to Test accounts.
Test with real people
Post back any info and about Modem, Router and LAN set up.
+NOTE. With Tiger/iChat 3 you may possibly have issues with an ISP blocking port 5060 for use with their Own VoIP service+

Syncing on a diff laptop- start from scratch- havent updated/synced 7months
I haven't updated nor synced my iphone 3gs in almost 7 months? The laptop I used is basically destroyed. I feel like I need to start from scratch wanting to do the following:
A)I have plenty of new games I purchased that are not synced or backed up, contacts, many textes and photos that I would like to keep.
B) I know there have been many updates since the last time I synced my iphone (i.e. the whole folders thing)that I have not done
Can I do all this in one fail swoop?
Can someone give me a step to step process of what I need to do with the new computer I will be using? (it is my roomates and she has itunes, but I dont want to mix my stuff with hers)
What will I lose? that's the real question.
Thank you so much and I am desperately looking for help as I am sooo not a techie kind of person - lol
Have a great day whoever you are =)Has anyone got an answer for this question?

Hi. We recently have subsriced to Satelite internet connection in North Yorkshire. The satellite connection is limited to a 13gig download limit and was wondering if there was a way to track our usuage as a whole - which are two laptops, i-phones and i-pad - by using the apple airport? Or any other way that people may know of.
Thanks for your time in advance!I have the same need which I assume is growing for many and thus done some research in this area. Apparently, applications such as NetUse and iNet Network have been able to measure total internet usage on the Airport Extreme, until recently.
Unfortunately, 6.x Airport firmware updates have eliminated something called SNMP Monitoring which has undermined the ability for these apps to measure the traffic. Very frustrating!
To my knowledge, SurplusMeter only tracks internet usage on one computer which is of limited use in a multi-device environment. -
ICal: how can I start from scratch?
I'm having recurring and persistent problems with iCal since I bought a new Mac Pro and migrated my user files from my previous computer (G5, which was also running Leopard).
At first, alarms weren't working. I read several threads here and went through a lot of troubleshooting and finally got that working again.
However, iCal is still very slow and buggy. For example, when I create a new to-do and click on the "due date" checkbox, it takes about 10 seconds for the check to appear. The spinning beachball is a frequent sight, and everything from creating new events to setting due dates and calendars takes five times longer than it used to when I was using iCal in Tiger.
I created a backup of my iCal file, and manually exported my calendars for extra protection. Then I used AppZapper to completely uninstall iCal and all related files, and I used Pacifist and the OS X DVDs to reinstall iCal. Then I imported each calendar individually.
This didn't work. iCal is still so unresponsive it's almost unusable. If there were another alternative out there that worked with my iPhone and other applications that sync with iCal, I'd be using it. But because I depend on those other apps I'm stuck with iCal, and I need to make it work.
Is it possible that one of my calendars is corrupted and causing problems? What else can I do to find out where the problem lies?Harlan83,
to start from scratch, you’ll need the pair of model-specific grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro. You can purchase a replacement pair of DVDs for your model MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. -
I cannot log into my account using the sync key that was given to me and nothing I do seems to fix it. Is there anyway I can "reset" my username? I'd like to reopen an account using my same username as opposed to starting from scratch.
reading through that, it doesn't look like you were given up on Candice. you never replied to StarDeb's last set of questions in that thread. she was probably waiting to hear back from you.
why didn't you reply? -
I have a 3 year old MBP (2.53 Ghz intel core 2 duo, 4gb 1067 Mhz DDr3, running 10.7.3). I have noticed it has gotten sloooow. I upgraded to Lion when it came out last year, and actually thoought Lion was faster than Snow Leopard. Performance has gotten slower over the last few months. The MBP shipped to me had Leopard loaded. Apple sent me the Snow Leopard disks, so I upgraded to SL. When Lion came out, I upgraded to Lion over the internet.
My thinking, is that if I wipe everything on the HD clean, reload the OS, then selectively load only the apps I really need (vs. the ones that have accumulated over the last three years) I should see a perfromance boost.
Maybe I'm wrong, but would appreciate the counsel of the experts on this board.
Also, since I do not have Lion Disks, if I start from scratch, would I reload SL, then grab the Lion upgrade from the apps store? If there is a document in the knowledge base that I could use to assist in this effort, that would be very helpful.
Also looking into replacing my HD with an SSD, if all else fails.
Thanks all.Not sure what is suspect or what is not, but here is everything that is running after I rebooted:

Create Replacement Library - Start from Scratch?
New user seeks guidance ... after reviewing forum threads and reading iPhoto6 instructional literature, it's obvious that I need to start my library over from scratch. (I am keenly aware that I can screw up the iPhoto software if I delete photos from behind the front door, so to speak).
All the photos are backed up on an external HD. I have only a 100 or so pictures now on my Mac MBP HD; some were imported through iPhoto 6.0.3 and some were just dragged directly into my home folder. So, while it's a small mess, it's an organizational mess nonetheless.
I want to start over and have every photo that makes it way to my MAC HD "enter" through iPhoto so that I don't have duplicates and is "tracked" by iPhoto. Can you suggest a safe procedure? And a second question, how should a picture be properly removed permanently from my system? Thanks, Jim F.Jim:
Since you have all of your photos on an external HD and so very few on the boot drive, I suggest you assemble those on the boot drive into one or more folders. If they are in your current iPhoto library then the originals should be located in folder in the iPhoto Library/Originals folder. Each roll has a folder there.
Once you have all of the photos safely in folders outside of iPhoto go ahead and delete the iPhoto Library folder.
Now launch iPhoto and create a new library. Then drag each folder of photos into iPhoto to create a roll for that folder. lf you rename the outside folders before importing the new roll will have the same name as that folder.
That's essentially it. To delete a photo from iPhoto you need to drag it to iPhoto's trash icon in the Source pane. Then go to iPhoto->Empty Trash menu option and empty the trash. It's all done within iPhoto.
That being said let me describe an new option in iPhoto for creating a library that uses alias files for each of the source files and doesn't copy the full file into the library. This way you can have your source files located on an external drive and just a small alias based library on the boot drive. There are a couple of caveats to this system. If the external drive is not mounted the only the thumbnail view of the unedited images and the full sized view of any edited images can be seen. You can add comments, labels and keywords but not move any images or use any function that requires the full sized image, slideshows, books, calendars, etc. Also any photo deleted from the library is not deleted from the source files. They have to be deleted manually from the Finder.
Tutorial #2 describes how to convert over to an alias system. Since you're starting from scratch it will be much easier. Just create an alias based library. Assemble your image files in a predetermined location (boot drive or external). Name the folders containing the files so the roll title will be informative, and import. Just a though. Good luck.

How To "Start From Scratch" and Build a Clean iTunes Library on a Portable USB External Drive?
A while ago I posted about my confused (and confusing) mess of an iTunes:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/16183210#16183210
While dozens looked I guess eveyone agreed with me "what a mess" and moved on.
So ... someone at the Apple Store suggested that what I should do is start from scratch. But I'm not sure if I understand all the steps. He said I should:
* create a folder of all my songs and just the song files not all the other iTunes stuff -- copy all the mp3 and m4a files that I have in Music > iTunes > iTunes Music > Music to a temp folder let's call it "all my music"
* launch iTunes and tell it to move to / always look at / whatever the terms my new portable external USB drive
* click on file / add to library and tell iTunes I want to add that "all my music" folder to iTunes
At this point I don't care if we lose playlists, artwork, play counts and all that stuff.
Does this approach make sense?
Is there another way?
So how do I tell iTunes to only look to the external? How do I get rid of the old stuff I have on the internal that is offering duplicates and phantom entries? Do I need to delete iTunes and then download a new copy? Should I delete the iTunes foilder? ...?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks!jayessemm wrote:

the simplest and working way.
go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced
On there change the iTunes Media Folder location to your external hard drive
Check that the rest of the preference pane looks similar to the following picture.
After doing so, on menu bar go to File -> Library -> Organize Library
This will force iTunes to copy all songs and playlist's to the new place and to build up a new database for the Library.
Empty or corrupted files will left behind on the old location.
After checking that all is on place and working at the new location, you may delete all files at the former location.
Done

How do I transfer playlists from my other Apple computer(s) to my new Macbook Pro? I think I have successfully moved the music (archive) but the new machine wants to start from scratch on the playlists.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
Essentially you need to copy over the itunes folder
username/Music/itunes
Over to your macbookpro I suggest using an ethernet cable as it is way quicker. Put it in the same spot on the new Macbook Pro
username/music/
This should bring over the playlists etc. Then just put the music back in from the archive -
How can I reset/refresh Mail and start from scratch in Lion?
Just completed the upgrade to Lion last night. On Snow Leopard I had been using Thunderbird as my mail client, but I'm interested in seeing what the upgrades in Mail look like and will do. Before Thunderbird I did use Mail, so opening the app brought up all my old settings, smart boxes, etc. I want to start from scratch as though I had never used Mail before - how can I reset it to "zero"? Can I, or do I need to just manually delete the accounts, folders, boxes, etc. and then re-add them?
Thanks for the help and advice.Ok, answering my own question. I found this article: http://www.christian-kalmar.com/fixing-a-broken-face-detection/

Hi,
iTunes is no longer syncing my iPhoto library to my iPhone 4. Everything was syncing fine when I first got the phone, but, over the past week or so, it's stopped syncing photos.
Now, after attempting to start from scratch by deleting all the photos on my iPhone, iTunes won't sync ANY photos from iPhoto back to my iPhone. I've restarted my phone, computer, etc., force quit all photo-related apps on my iPhone, and tried various combinations of turning iTunes' photo syncing on/off, switching photo sync folders, etc., all to no avail -- I can't get my iPhoto library back on to my iPhone no matter what I do.
Anyone encounter a similar situation? (I've already sent feedback to Apple.) Thanks in advance.Try deleting what is called the iPod Photo Cache.

Had pse 8 on a Windows 7 PC with a catalog backup on an external drive. Now have a Mac with OS Mavericks. If install pse 12 or Lightroom on the Mac will I be able to use the old catalog backup or must I start from scratch.
If you made a full catalog backup using the organizer's backup command, and you did it to a removable drive, yes, you can restore it to the mac. A backup made on discs will not work, though.
