If migrations fails, how to restore data

Hello,
if migration fails at image applying step, we can use another TS to install OS only and  loadstate.exe to restore data from SMP, I tried it and it works. But if we use hardlinks, after fail I need to run TS to build OS only and it overwrites folder C:\_SMSTaskSequence\
where UserState folder is stored, and I am not able to restore data. What I can do in this situation?

Hi,
First I recommend you check the log file SMSTS.LOG.
Also as Peter mentioned, you could use loadstate via the command line to restore the data.

  • How to restore data from my Time Capsule onto my new hard drive

My Macbook's hard drive had to be changed, and I'm trying to restore files from my Time Capsule onto my new hard drive, but all I see are three sparsebundle files (one for each Mac we have at home, including my computer/old hard drive). From that point I don't know what else to do. If I click on it, it opens a dialogue that says "opening volumes" and it stays on that for a while.
Does anyone know how to restore data backed up in my Time Machine from previous backups onto a new hard drive? Does it have to do with these sparsebundle files? Or, is there another way?

If it backed up the lock file, then Lightroom was open when Time Machine ran, and the backup therefore may be corrupted.  You could try restoring that backup (without overwriting your week ago version) and see if it'll open.  If it does, you're off and running.  What methods have you tried?

Is there a way where i can retrieve my spreadsheets from the past iCloud backup of numbers?

Your Numbers documents were synced with iCloud so they would be stored on the server rather than being included in the backup.  If you were signed into your iCloud account on a Mac that you were backing up with Time Machine, you could restore them from your Time Machine backup.

  • Migration Assistant Won't Restore Data, Mavericks, from 10.8

This is f---ed up!  I hope I can find an answer here...
I am trying to do one of the most basic things:  Restore data, apps and settings from a USB Mountain Lion Time Machine backup to my new Mavericks based machine.
Migration assistant sees the disc fine, will let me get to the "restore" screen where there are 3 check boxes for restoring data, settings and apps from a time machine backup.
Unforutnately, it doesn't work.  It says I have about 400k worth of data, settings, and apps to restore, but this is absolutely wrong.  I've got about 800GB of stuff to restore, and appearently Migration Assistant doesn't see 99.9999% of it.
    Any idea what's wrong here?
I did encrypt the home folder on my old machine, but NOT the time machine backup because I didn't want this problem!  (It happened anyway).
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

MA doesn't work fine!  It didn't restore any of my apps, none of my data, and I am not sure what settings it set, but nothing I noticed right away.
I DID use the setup assistant at boot, same deal!
Contacting Apple Support is usually a pain, and takes too long.  If they can't fix it on the phone (which is usually the case when I call), they want a genius to look at it, and that involves taking the machine down to the apple store.
By the time I have done all that, I can just re-load things myself.
No worries, I just restored my e-mail and browser settings.  Those are the biggest things, and I can pull contacts etc off my iPhone.
I just wish the thing had restored like it is SUPPOSED to.
Anyway, thanks for the reply!  =)

  • How to restore data files from a purchased app that isn't working

I recently had to reset my iPad after an ios7 problem with hyperlinks.  The reset fixed the hyperlink problem but now I can't open excel or word files created in a purchased application, productivity suite.  When I click on the file, it starts to open then switches back to the app icon.  Tried deleting and reinstalling the app and now all the files are gone from my iPad.  I backed up my iPad to my desktop before deleting the app but can't figure out how to restore just the files I need.

You should be able to mount the partition once you've loaded up the live CD. Just figure out which one it is by using
    fdisk -l
then mount it to /mnt or wherever you want it.
As for moving/saving them, I'm not entirely sure how to get them onto an external server. You might have to mount another partition in order to install any apps that you need to connect to an external server, but wait for someone who really knows to answer before you try it. If you're only talking about 4 or 5 MB, I would just mount a USB stick and dump them on there.

  • HDD fails again after restoring data from Time Machine?

    Hello,
I will try to explain my case and end with a question that maybe someone will be able to answer (I hope..):
    1. My imac started to run very slow and every 2 minutes or less appeared the coloured wheel for some secs. While the wheel was visible, the Os and all the apps running freezed.
    2. Firstly I thought it was a software problem, but after some "testing" I started thinking on a hard drive failure or similar.
    3. I did a disk verification whith the Disk Utility and it failed.
    4. Panic!
    5. I booted from the instalation DVD and tried to repair the hard drive with the Disk Utility.
    6. Nothing..
    7. I erased my HDD partition and created a new one.
    8. I used the DVD to install again all the Os X.
    9. After the installation all seemed ok. The HDD passed the verification and the spining coloured wheel appeared only when it should.
    10. I restored my data, apps, etc from my Time Machine HDD using the Migration Assistent utility.
    11. After the restore, the problems with the HDD reappeared.
Do you think Time Machine can store damaged files and after a restore make a healthy disk (only with the Os X installed) crash?
    Has anyone experienced the same?
    Thank you!

Sounds like the hard drive might be starting to fail.

  • How to restore data stored on icloud

Hi - I have around 13gb of data stored on iCloud (i can see this when I click on manage storage).I wish to use iCloud to retrieve this data when setting up my IPad. However, when I set up the ipad and use a backed version in the icloud, I am not able to retrieve all 13gb of data. So, my question is how to use the iCloud to retrieve all this data on my IPad.
    Many thanks,
    James.

    hi grant. thank you.
i think i am one giant step away from completing all of this. of course at the moment i am recalling your "you are trying to do too much at one time" caution. the lowdown here is that my IT guy just left for a cross country trip and is not available and i am in the weeds big time. can you help me with something?
i am in Lion and I seem to be seeing TWO user accounts named after my SHORT NAME (say this is "Mac's Mac Short Name") for my Snow Leopard install. One has the ICON for my Snow Leopard Install and the other has a default ICON.
in the USERS folder i am seeing one folder with the HOME FOLDER ICON that has the same name as my Snow Leopard Home Folder and I see one folder that has the same name as the SHORT NAME listed above. So this folder says "Mac's mac Short Name" and it has folders in it with red circles and negative symbols showing it is not accessible (these are Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, and Pictures).
Since I migrated my DESKTOP (long story but i have a lot of data on here and i wanted it in Lion so I could organize it before moving some of the work that was finished to the raid volume where my DOCUMENTS folder is located) - I can tell that I /think/ that the SHORT NAME with the Snow Leopard icon is the correct user but when i try and delete the User Acount with the same short name but a default icon is says that there is 194.1 GB of data in here!
So i am confused to the point where it seems OK to copy my home folder in Snow Leopard to the Data Drive but it seems unwise at the moment to point my new Lion install there because I am so confused as to what i have for user accounts.
Did any of that make sense enough to solve? I hate to think i am out for two weeks over here.
    - jon

  • How to Restore Data Deleted  from Time Capsule Hard Drive

This question is more about the time capsule in general as opposed to a specific time machine issue.
I'm using my time capsule as an external hard drive that I can access wirelessly and I have accidentally deleted a folder. It didn't go into the trash can on the computer I used to delete the file from my TC, it just disappeared. I have data recovery software (Data Rescue III) but it is unable to locate the TC since it is not a plugged in device. I've tried connecting my computer to the TC via wireless, ethernet, and usb but Data Rescue still won't detect the TC.
How can I get the files back? Is there a way to restore files deleted from the TC when it's being used as a hard drive (not as a time machine for backups)?
    THANKS!!!

There is only one USB port on the back of the Time Capsule, and AFAICT from reading Apple's documentation, the only uses for that port are to connect an external hard drive or printer. You could try connecting that port to your Mac directly via USB cable, but nothing I can find indicates it would work, and you would be solely responsible if it somehow damaged either device (which may or may not even be a possible side effect).
Unfortunately, if connecting the Mac to the Time Capsule via USB does not work, you're probably out of luck. Unless you are willing to crack open the Time Capsule, remove the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure so you can access it with Data Rescue, your data will remain lost. Note for the future that you absolutely *should not ever* keep original, un-backed-up data on a backup drive. It's poor organization and dangerous to boot.

  • Macbook Pro hard drive failing, how to recover data?

My 2 year old MBP refused to boot up this morning. I was told at the Genius Bar that the hard drive is on its way out.
It is still able to mount when hooked up to another machine but apparently the geniuses don't do data recovery.  I was refferred to a data recovery service or another option was to "hook the drive up to another machine" via some sort of docking station to lift the data off myself.
I have no idea where to start with this, does anyone know how I could accomplish this myself? Thanks in advance for any tips.

I hope that will work out for you, but I have very little confidence that all will go well that way.
Your situation is one in which it makes very good sense to ignore the warranty on your hard drive, replace it yourself at your own expense, and thus be able to keep the old drive — which Apple will keep, if Apple replaces it. Once you have a new drive in your MBP and an OS up and running on it, then you can connect the old drive to it and see what can be recovered. If you hand the machine over to Apple for the replacement and lose the old drive, and then you discover that some of your files in Mac-only formats have been corrupted by being written to a Windows file system on your HP computer, you'll have no chance of recovering them.
The way to avoid all this, of course, was to keep up-to-date backups on one or more external hard drives so it wouldn't be necessary to recover anything from the failed drive. Once you get your new drive, do that.

  • How to restore data on new iphone without using the initial setup

I bought a new iphone 5s today but the guy in the shop skipped the initial setup to activate the sim meaning I didn't get to restore the data through iCloud from my old phone as the wifi in the shop wasn't working. I have now got home to a wifi connection and have signed into my iCloud account but how do I restore my data? Or how do I get back to the initial setup?

On your phone: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You can now restore your previous phone's backup to your new phone.
