If my mac goes idle or asleep it won't come back up

I posted this problem (below) on Monday and have reset the pram and the SMU by unplugging from the wall, as yet have not opened her up. Working with her all week the problem only occurs when she is idle, she goes to sleep and will not come back up. I put her into sleep mode myself and tried to bring her back straight away even before the fans got loud but she would not come back. So it now seems that my main problem is if the mac is idle it will not come back up without a retstart.
Been in touch with a support place who say the hard disc is failing and it needs a new hard disc, reluctant to do that but it now looks it may be the time to update.
Anyone else come across this I bought this Mac in 2005 and am told I may get £100 quid for it!
My spec is 2.3GHz Power PC G5 Mac OSX Vers 10.4.11. 4.5 GB RAM
Over the weekend I got back from a weeks holiday and powered up my Mac. On three occasions yesterday while it was left alone or in sleep mode the fans went very loud and the screen would not come back up.
The only way to stop the fans was to hold in the start button for several seconds until it powered down and restart it up again.

Disks are easy enough to have directory need repair or replace if really can't be fixed by just Disk Utility or reformatting.
I don't know that you want a "support place" though.
And for future: there is a forum for G5s.
https://discussions.apple.com/community/desktop_computers/power_mac?view=discuss ions
SMU Reset of G5 is not just from unplugging - that is for later INTEL based Mac Pro, not PowerMac.

To resolve your issue, try to eliminate and unplug any devices, cables, etc.
Try a clean OS
Right now though your disk drive directory - boot from another hard drive with OS X, or boot into Single User Mode and run fsck. Or  of course if you own Disk Warrior, use that.

  • After upgrading to mavericks my mac shut off and won't come back on

I upgraded to Mavericks and my 2013 macbook pro shut off and won't come back on.  When I push the start button I can hear the chime and then my sleep light blinks really fast and then shuts off completely.  All I get is a white screen with the loading circle just going around and around.  I tried resetting the pram but that didn't work.  Any ideas?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Goes black and when you tilt it comes back on.

Macbook model A1342  goes black and when you tilt it comes back on.  Is there a fix?

If your Mac is off then start up. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the Option key until the Mac and Windows Disks show up. Then click on the Mac disk and the arrow below it. After it boots up in Mac then go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your Mac partition as the Startup disk.
If you are in Windows then look for the Boot Camp icon on the taskbar. It will look like a gray box sitting on one corner. One of the options when you click it is to restart in Mac OS. After it boots up in Mac then go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your Mac partition as the Startup disk.

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
    Thanks

    A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
    Again, Thank you

why does my iphone 3gs screen goes black after reaching another party and won't come back on to end the call

    hi smalley3,
    Welcome to the Forums.
The flickering issue maybe due to a bad LCD cable or in some cases, a faulty GPU (the GPU is integrated to the CPU, and the CPU is soldered to the motherboard).
If there's still no image on the screen even after connecting an external display then you likely have a bad GPU.
In this case, I recommend you contact support for service (and also to see if there's a consideration that can be done on the warranty repair).

It's possible you've got a 'hot corner' set up. If you have and move the mouse to a certain corner of the screen it'll do as you describe. Have a look in System Preferences>Mission Control, bottom left of the window click on the 'Hot Corners' button and see if there is anything in there.

New (3mo) macbook air screen goes black and sometimes won't come back on after I unplug it from the power cord.  Any ideas why it is doing this? Sometimes I have to hold power button for 10 seconds for it to shut off then back on. Sometimes holding the power button for a second is enough for it to come back on.

I took it to the Genius Bar, and they identified it as a hardware issue. Just got it back today. Parts replaced were:
620-5629 Display Module — Symptom: Distored/blurred/focus video issue
605-3284 Top Case with Keyboard — Symptom: specific key(s) do not work
So far so good. I'd suggest taking it in and not trying to work around it — it's a rare hardware issue (given the number of threads about it) and should be replaced.

  • Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter 1.03 - screen goes black and won't come back

I have a new Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to allow my original Apple 30" Cinema Display to connect to the new Mac Pro.  Shipped straight from Apple, it is firmware version 1.03.  I've never had flickering issues as so commonly described, but the display will often go black (possibly after a screen power save) and not come back.  when this happens I am still able to connect to and use the Mac via remote connection.  But the only way to get the screen back is either to unplug the adapter and plug it back in to the Mac, or to shut down and power up the Mac.  Is anyone else seeing this issue?

    Hello,
    From the news page here...
    http://xlr8yourmac.com/
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

When viewing Facebook, the blue menu at the top disappears.  I can only log out when I go to messages and the menu returns.  Any ideas?

These files were lost two years ago.
That's not consistent with what you wrote in your first message. I can't help you unless I know what's going on. Either you do, or do not, have backups of all the data you want to keep. If you do not, then the first thing you need to do is back up those files. It makes zero sense to do anything else. In order to back up, you'll need either of two things: another Mac, in working order, with a FireWire port and enough space on its internal drive to hold your files; or an external drive, also with enough space.
On the other hand, if you do have backups, or if you simply don't care about any of the data, then the solution to your problem may be quite simple. All you have to do is boot from your installation disc (your profile says you're running Mac OS 10.5), erase your internal drive, reinstall the Mac OS, then restore your data from backup. You will need to be selective in restoring software, because incompatible software may be what caused the issue.
But it's also possible that you have a hardware failure, in which case you can't get your computer working again until it's repaired.

  • My mac randomly cut off and it won't turn back on, what do I do?

I just bought my mac the other day and I was about to Facetime someone and it randomly cut off and it will not do anything. It wont even charge. I don't know anything about computers so I have no clue what to do. PLEEEAAASSSEEE HEELLPP!!

If it's new, then it is under warranty. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service. If it is a used computer then you need to provide more information. If your battery will not take a charge, then either the charger is not working or the battery needs to be replaced or both.

  • HT1941 Mac air went to sleep an does not come back running

my mac air is nor running

perform SMC reset, verify you can boot then:
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
If you cannot boot to recovery  (CMD + R on boot) then theres a problem and no diagnostics will help
Verify this, if same contact Apple for appt. and full in shop diagnostic and possible repair.

  • OfficeJet 6500A Plus Goes Offline and Won't Come Back

I'm having  trouble with my OfficeJet 6500A Plus, keeping it "online" to the wireless network in my home.  I am trying to print from my HP Pavilion laptop which has been loaded with the latest software from the HP Support site.
The printer shows itself to be online to my router.  I've even run the Wireless Setup Wizard over again to reintroduce the printer to the router.  But, no, my laptop considers the printer to be "offline" and, if I try to remove and reinstall the printer, Windows can't find the printer on the network.
By the way, my Pavilion laptop is new, purchased in July and it's running on Windows 8.1.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
